  • Jupiter 2 Engine Sound Effects - Lost In The Mists Of Time
How Were Those Turbine Sounds Created For The Jupiter 2's Engines?
    Does Anyone Know For Sure?
    Circa 2005 Jup2com
One of the most frequent question I hear regarding the Jupiter 2 from Lost In Space is "What was used to make the engine sounds of the Jupiter 2" ? Well, I do not know. No one else I have spoken with can say 100 percent for sure , but there are several theories.
I was fortunate to happen upon unexpectedly, a Sound Tech Editor who worked at Fox, after LIS , in the late 1970's & 1980's named David Ice. I was talking with David about an old script of a proposed LIS Reunion movie from back in the early 1980's and he happened to mention then that he used to be a sound tech at Fox years ago. The most fortunate thing was that David is a BIG Lost In Space fan himself! So of course David also wondered the same thing as other fans - exactly how did they create those engine sounds and what were they?
Well , David was able to search around the Fox Audio Archive Dept. back in the 80's and talk to some of the folks still at Fox who had worked on LIS during it's run trying to solve this little mystery. While eventually finding the audio tracks in the archives , with the only reference being "Hickey's Spaceship" , everyone he asked there were unable to tell him how these sound effects were created for LIS.
David shared with me his educated "best guess" as a Fox Sound Editor ,on how the effect was created for LIS. To read David's remarks click the link below.

Present day 2023 - NOTE That this was posted/last updated back in September 2005.
In 2006-2007 I received an email from Don Hall Jr. in response to this page on my site. I never posted it/updated the site because I had given it up in 2005. I no longer have any of the sites emails as back then I used a Hotmail account . who's service has long since ended and been purged and is now known as Microsoft Outlook.
Unfortunately I have no documentation of his email and I do not recall the details. I do believe he confirmed the theory that theremins were used in the making of this particular sound effects.
Also note that I do not have a copy of the 20th Century Fox memo
detailing the sound effects used for the " Time Tunnel " , of which many were also used in Lost In Space that Jay Fruet and NeoLASE mention. I do not recall it at all and it wasn't saved by The Wayback Machine on my site.

Who is this Don Hall Jr.? www.imdb.com/n...
Who is Hickey's Spaceship Ralph B Hickey? m.imdb.com/nam...
If David, Jay, NeoLASE or any others are still out there , feel free to drop me an email via the contact on this youtube channel.

It’s so sad that when they tried to revive the series (via movie or TV) the one thing the idiot writers forgot to figure out was that, ….. THE CLASSIC JUPITER 2 DESIGN was the star of the show… The reason the Star Trek movies (for the most part) were so successful was because they focused on the main theme… THE ENTERPRISE ….(with few modifications) …. 🙈🙈

So true. The biggest disappointment was the “lift vehicle” that breaks apart to reveal the ugliest ship ever. Made no sense and didn’t even use the sound effect. No wonder it bombed

I use the J2 engine sound for an alarm on my cell phone. It’s awesome. Another alarm is the Jonny Quest theme…both make me smile when I hear them…

In all of sci-fi no other sound compares to the engine sound of the Jupiter Two! It's unmatched and has that unearthly, yet immense sound of power! No other ship can match this sound which I can listen to all day! The best sound ever created!

It's truly amazing sound effects as well as visual is simply out of this world.Lost In Space Stands tall superior even to this day. Super technology way ahead of its time. The effects of the Jupiter 2 flying through space or across the horizon landings take offs is incredibly realistic. This In 1965! How amazing is that! 👍🌟💫✨🎆🎇

I remember being so fascinated by the Jupiter2 as a child that my aunt had a new house with an upstairs circuit panel consisting of a series of red squares on something the sice of a faceplate for an electrical outlet or light switch. I was may 5 years old and everytime I would go to her house I would blow all the fuses then they would come to look what happened and of course I would be standing right by the circuit breaker panel and they would ask me "Did you press any of those buttons?" "Yes" I answered. "Why?" they asked. "I wanted the house to take off and fly into space like the Jupiter2 on Lost in Space." Im not sure whether they thought it was cute or annoying. Probably a little of both but you gotta admit its really kinda cute for a 5 year old to think that they could pilot a 1960s midcentury modern ranch home into outer space. I still chuckle when I think that I could do that....I didnt even think that it wasnt my house that I was sending into space. Well I mean...I grew up in a Queen Anne built in the 1890s. Now you can hardly imagine an 1890s Queen Anne taking off for outer space and traveling the galaxy so of course I had to use my aunts new house to do that. Sadly, I never did get her house to fly into space.

Wow... quite the imagination as a kid! 😊 Me it was sticking knobs or buttons on large cardboard boxes to twist and turn. Whenever a neighbor got a new refrigerator or washer/dryer appliance and put the box carton outside, Hallelujah! What a field day for the imagination those boxes became! 😁 But yeah, no, I never tried to fly our house 😅

It is said that Batman tv series 1966-68 campiness had an influence on S2 & 3 of LIS. Whether that's why or not, I don't know.

I notice in some scenes when the freezing tube doors slide open they make a quieter, smaller sound similar to the Jupiter 2 engines. Maybe that's one of the layers of the basic sound.
