@@williamjones4479 I didn't like it in the 1970s because it gave me headaches. I guess I have to disagree. While the first season theme is well done, the 3rd season theme as played here is much too slow and just feels clumsy. It just doesn't have the light spark of the original. The Cincinnati Pops could have done better.
Mind blown. Doubley blown considering John Williams was knocking it out of the park in the late sixties and still does today, having just taken another oscar nom for Rise of Skywalker (hideous film) and in 2021 written a violin concerto
@Allen Edwards Could you tell me why you didn't like the second theme? I noticed something was different, but I couldn't put my finger on it. All I know is the conductor seemed to enjoy the music for the second season.
I'm so glad they include the "countdown" portion of the the third season theme. Both are really well done but I never realized how much that 3rd season theme can swing! Outstanding work in this arrangement!
I think both theme songs are just great! Composer Johnny Williams IS a genius! I love them both, especially those awesome trumpets in the first one. Brings back memories of when I was a kid. I loved that show. It was corny, but a great fantasy show, especially for kids.
The 60's perhaps has some of the greatest memorable themes in movies and tv history.. Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel, Land of The Giants, I Dream of Jeanie, Bewitched, Petticoat Junction, Get Smart, Bonanaza, Star Trek, Hawaii 5-0, Gilligan Island, The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, the James Bond themes, Spaghetti Western ( The Good The Bad and The Ugly and etc ) ..Damn, the list goes on and on.. In my opinion the 60's was THE best!!!
What a terrific rendition! Brought me back to my childhood when I would watch Lost in Space every day at 4:30 pm in 4th grade, and was transported. This brought me back to that happy place thanks...
It sounded like they sped things up for Season 3. I had no idea there were so many musicians involved, I always just pictured a couple horns and a few other instruments.
I just love how you can hear the low brass so clearly in the second theme. You could never really hear that and the full richness of the composition on my mother's cabinet TV set with aluminum foil on the rabbit ears.
If I may say, "Lost in Space" as a series is a bit complicated to try to critique. Episode 1, the series premiere, holds up amazingly well, over fifty years later, in my opinion. And the cast has pointed at that season one was quite serious, before the show's producers were asked to "camp it up," in response to the direct competition from "Batman." I haven't seen much from Season 3 lately, but I recall a return to seriousness as the competition changed. There is more to the story, of course...
I strange that I found this today. I just finish watching the last episode of Lost In Space on blu ray. It was fun to have them back in my life for three seasons.
This is the best rendition I have found to date. The Cincinnati Pops have performed these themes as I remember them on TV. No member in the orchestra missed a single note. Beautifully done!
Just stumbled across this. How fabulous! It had me grinning from ear to ear with a slight tear in my ear. It takes me back, not just to the TV series but to those times in my youth. Thank you.
I loved this show, it was my favourite. Dr Smith and the robot were the best in the show. But I loved it all. When I retire soon I’m going to watch the whole lot again. This music has made me nostalgic. What fabulous theme music.
I've watched this about 25 times today. I just discovered it this morning. It is absolutely amazing. I smile from ear to ear and get goose bumps hearing these wonderful Johnny Williams theme songs. Lost In Space is my all time favorite television series. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra really brings these great theme songs alive again. Sounds totally awesome! 🤗 Added note: I just bluetooth linked my tablet to my vintage Kenwood stereo and listened to this again. Then I linked to my 7.2 channel Sony home theater system in my livingroom. Over 1000 watts with two sub woofers. These wonderful theme songs blow me away. The huge orchestra with all those instruments really sounds amazing!
I love the many "wind-centric" arrangements of that era. Lost in Space #2 sounds like a concert band piece. I think this kind of orchestration punched through the 5" mono speakers we all had at the time.
I love both themes but Season 3 gives me goosebumps...I love the "heavy" version of it in the end credits of the Lost in Space Movie and love it when the new series occasionally plays it.
Irwin Allen was a genius, he created good TV shows for the family to watch, these Lost in Space themes bring me back to when I was a kid. Thanks for the memories.
There's something so bold about the intro to the second theme when the countdown appears on screen. It was a great, jarring transition from the cold open to the intro. It feels like four successive shots of adrenaline to pump you up for what's to come. The first one is classic and fits the initial tone of a show titled "Lost in Space." It was more peril and intrigue than high adventure. The second theme has a heroic flair, a bit of tongue-in-cheek that fits the shows transition to color. It also begins Williams's knack for nesting multiple themes into one. Star Wars, E.T., Raiders, Superman, and Harry Potter all had a variety of themes for the the same thing - not simply the use of leitmotif. I can't pick a favorite example, but the one that leaps out to me is Superman. In his main march there are two distinct and equally indelible and iconic themes. I've always wondered which one people would sing more if you randomly asked 100 people.
John Williams also did the background music for Gilligan's island in 1964 . When that Minnow is about to leave the Harbour you see the boats with their sails down and flags lowered. The film clip was done in 1962 just after JFK was shot and the sailors paid their respect because of the Kennedy's history in boating. Joseph Kennedy got rich during the prohibition days running booze from Canada in his boat .
I was given a tape recorder as a little boy and I taped the Lost In Space themes and other science fiction show themes. The second season theme with the countdown and then the takeoff, soaring theme sent a thrill thru me back then. I never knew John Williams created those themes! Just like the conductor the music would weirdly inspire my career. That tape player would predict my career in radio years later as a news producer and anchor! Amazing how sound can bring back such an intense emotional memory.
John Williams is a timeless time piece. I also grew up with the show...and never missed an episode, which one had to wait a whole WEEK before you got to see another. Then you have Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants and so, so many scores for Star Wars, Saving Private Ryan. This man is an endless talent. Excellent job Cincinnati Pops, and the conductor.

TV themes never get enough credit. In addition to "Lost in Space", there's "Peter Gunn" by Henry Mancini, "Dragnet" by Walter Schumann, "Combat!" by Leonard Rosenman, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." by Jerry Goldsmith....
As I've said about myself, about the only thing I really know about music is how to listen to it. The orchestra is fantastic, and Mr. Russel is obviously having so much fun! This is a great video.
The 60s and 70s really were a golden age for television theme music. I'd never noticed how jazzy the Lost in Space theme was, I was just a kid at the time, enjoying the fantasy. But so many theme tunes of that era make you want to jump up and dance. Bonanza, The Wild, Wild West (and I didn't even like westerns!) Mission Impossible, Battlestar Galactica, Space: 1999. All terrific.
Oh the pain, the pain! Loved this & what a journey back in time to my childhood! Still amazes me to see an orchestra perform the music from a film or tv show. When one sees a film one just hears the music and doesn't generally hive any thought to how it came to be, that an orchestra on a sound stage brought the film to life.

I was blown away.
Around 2:26, the conductor can no longer contain himself. He's having the time of his life, and he's going to let it show!
That's the "rock" phrase that they asked Williams to insert as a response to the hipper "Batman" theme. Looks like it worked.
It's within the definition of 'geek', which he admits to.

Good job. In my opinion, John Williams is the best conductor to have lived.

I love them both, but I always thought the second season’s music brought out more of the adventure in the music
