      Like I always say, Porcupine Tree had a certain kind of magic as a band that was more than the sum of its parts.

    • @DekkarJr
      @DekkarJr 2 роки тому +1

      yeah you can really hear the Pink Floyd influences and sooo many other bands and styles in this one. Im hearing Rush, I'm hearing heavy metal, im hearing shoegaze, im hearing ambient, its sooo many flavors of great music all in one epic.
      It is a goddamn SHAME that Prog style rock isn't more popular. I love the way steven and PT have this over all style of "building" the song with so many pieces rather than just dumping the best riffs in the front of the song etc. Its all about picking the best meat and the best veggies, and the perfect seasoning. Gordon Ramsey would love these guys i bet.

      Indeed. More or less.
      They just need to stop being "likeable" or the "wide public" favorite and etc.
      Then, they will not be "Porcupine Tree", especially Steven Wilson one of a kind anymore

    Fun fact: Steven Wilson wrote a ghost story screenplay and this song was supposed to be in the film soundtrack, but they failed to fund the project so it (and some other songs) was then recorded for the album. I'm glad they did because this is one of my absolute favorite songs. Had this DVD pretty much since it came out close to 15 years ago and this still gives me chills every time. Seeing Suzi really get into it made me happy. It's just a perfectly composed song that has everything I could want from a song. Cheers :)

    Suzie, 9:00 The note you love so much is an E which is functioning as a suspended 9th of the predominant D minor.
    Ending melodic phrases on unresolved sus notes give colour and emotional depth to music, and take the listener to an unexpected place. You couldn't explain what it was about choosing that note to end the phrase that pleased you so much, but you don't need an education in music theory to feel it... just a musical ear, which you clearly have.

Porcupine Tree ... wonderful band, the band I like most after Rush ... because both are over ... and I have this show on DVD: for me this song is their "masterpiece" ... of this very one show I recommend the songs "Blackest Eyes", the instrumental "Mother and Child Divided" (this one with a very "heavy metal" feel), "The Sound of Muzak", and the soft "Trains" that ends the show ... but I really recommend watching the entire show!

    Long story how it happened, but I got lost in Oklahoma at 2 or 3 in the morning--no map or GPS, no towns for many miles in all directions. At one point I had to stop and get out of the car in a dark, forested area on a narrow road with almost no traffic, having no idea where the hell I was. I was totally creeped out and felt like I was being watched. Of course, nothing bad happened.....but it should have. The first line of this song reminded me of that.

    I have to give a shout out to Richard Barbieri here too as I feel he doesn't always get given the credit he truly deserves. He's content to just play in the background out of the limelight but he is a real lynchpin of the Porcupine Tree sound. Without his atmospherics it just wouldn't sound the same. Still great but missing something that makes it extra special.

    'Never stop the car on a drive in the dark' always reminds me of this Stephen King story where the guy stops in a snowstorm and his wife disappears and becomes a vampire, and it's like, Oh shit, never stop your car on a drive in the dark.
    'Never look for the truth in your mother's eyes'
    Your mother knows what you've been up to. SHE KNOWS.

    Anyone else think that Colin Edwin is the most laid back bassist since Pete Cruickshank? (Anyone under the age of 45 probably won't know who I'm referring to there!) 😜
