    Fighting games share a weakness with every other game, where multiplayer is by far the biggest and most appealing part of the game. No matter how much the single player improves, we rarely boot up a fighting game to get through the story or fight the AI, it’s usually to play against other people. But what if those people aren’t there, what if finding them becomes too much effort, and when you do find them, the skill gap is too large to have a good match? Is the game dead then? The answer will depend on who you ask, and this video, we will explore where the truth lies, and why both sides of this argument tend to have a fundamental misunderstanding of each other.

    “This game is dead” is usually thrown as something negative, but these smaller games can also be a gateway to an experience that is much more special and personal than hopping into a newly released fighter with thousands of players. Do you have such experiences yourself?

      As in T5DR? Either way the problem is nobody's playing anymore and these old games all have garbage netcode. It'a almost guaranteed that you'll have massive input delay in any match.

      Fightcade has gone a long way to make sure many classic games stay somewhat relevant. At least enough to get some people to learn and play the game. Some games like Vampire Savior or Breaker Revenge get a second lease in life from being largely ignored during their original release. No way 3rd Strike would have return to Evo main stage if Fightcade wasn't around.
      Tekken 3 is playable with rollback on Duckstation. I've been hearing of a FC update with Duck, but I'm haven't heard of any recent development. If Tekken 5 or 6 is to be resurrected through community effort, I believe the PSP ports w/ PPSSPP would be the most viable option as the PC requirements would be much lower than a PS3 emu, making it accessible to more players. Hopefully someone way smarter than me can make that a reality sometime soon.

    I think this happens because people for some reason aren't okay with just playing whatever game they want. They want it to be "relevant" so they can feel cool and important.

      Unless the game was designed with some kinda "killswitch" that the company can press. I suggest checking out UpperEchelon's recent vid if you haven't seen it yet. Its entirely possible that Bandai Namco could sunset Tekken 8, INCLUDING ALL SINGLE PLAYER CONTENT, when they are done with it. And from their recent behavior, it wouldn't surprise me.

    Honestly, people always underestimate what a healthy player count is. 1v1 really makes things so much easier. But also good lobbies are really underrated. I think it's the main reason why +R is decently more popular than Xrd.

  • @SerialNavelgazerCBF
    @SerialNavelgazerCBF 2 місяці тому +1

    This reminds me of how rollback would often be seen as a defibrillator for games previously thought either dead or on life suppoort ever since +R got the treatment and had new life breathed into it. Blazblue Centralfiction was dead for almost half a decade, then came rollback to give it a steady base for a while (and it's still doing better than Cross Tag as it's still well into the triple digits lul).
    Ofc, fucking up the rollback like DB FighterZ apparently did will sorta negate the chances of the game getting a shot in the arm for a few months or years. Otherwise, yea sometimes a dead game basically means it's relegated to being a Discoed fighter like Eternal Fighter Zero or something, with less than 100 or even 50 players.

    I really wish we could get a bunch of new games that utilize the best aspects of classic games. Really well made 2D Art Animation design style. 2D character design in a 3D/2.5D esthetic style game. MMA fighting games. X-men the animated series games. MTV Celebrity death match game. Clay animation or stop motion style fighting games. Whacky, Absurd, Extreme, Dark games. 2D characters in a 3d/2.5D environment, going around fighting and breaking things around in the environment. A mortal kombat game in the style of the OG classic MK games. Old school Samurai Showdown. The list goes on and on. The point is, the potential is thru the roof yet game companies just continue to repeatedly make 3D fighting games even if it's a side perspective only style fighting game.. IMO I'm pretty tired of these 3D ones that have taken their art design in really specific directions.. I'd be much more interested in seeing a huge comeback of 2D games. 2D art design with crisp gameplay mechanics, layers to the gameplay mechanics and all sorts of different modes, levels, mini games and other things to select from. Even MMA video games is just dying to see someone talented make some fighting games around this subject and there can be different styles of MMA fighting games..

    5:25 The first live service games were F2P online games from the early 2000s. Battle passes, while they are cringeworthy now were actually a massive improvement to more predatory monetization models.

    • @TheRadioSquare
      @TheRadioSquare 2 місяці тому

      Kinda but not really? F2P definitely had terrible monetization models, I remember playing a lot of awful Korean MMOs and F2Ps back in the day that were very happy to sell power, but that wasn't really an issue in the western games afaik. The current games with a "decent" battle pass model wouldn't be like predatory P2W or mobile games of the old, they would just be pay 2 play or they would croak.
      It's more so that battle pass idea enabled companies to milk the players much more efficiently. It's such a one size fits all solution. Past that it didn't take them long to figure out that you can space out the seasons and drip feed people content while making money. Now you could give them less content than you would in a full on DLC, while also not splitting the playerbase based on DLC ownership.

    • @curio5220
      @curio5220 2 місяці тому

      @@TheRadioSquare Yesss I used to play a lot of bad F2P games also lol. But those games were definitely charging more money. Full disclosure I've worked in the space and at the time especially with fortnite the big takeaway was that people liked the battle pass because it was clear what you were getting (no gacha randomness) and it was a good deal. Back then every game was hunting for whales. Now at least we have a choice and for the most part battle passes are not pay to win.

    If I have to wait over a minute maybe 2 minutes if I really like the game or constantly play people with >100ms ping then the game is dead to me. What does 1000 players mean if they don't live near you or wake up when you wake up? No game in the history of humankind has released and been so good that I'm willing tolerate wasting minute of my life waiting for laggy games. Sure you can play offline with your irl friends and then it will never be dead but there's a reason why the age of online was very important for kicking fighting games into second gear. Offline with friends is has been difficult for a long time.

    Unpopular opinion maybe but I'd argue that many fg players aren't really loyalists. Even if a previous game is better, they abandon it to play the newer and even buy dlc characters that was in the previous base game. There's an obsession to play "the last shit" instead of having any critical mind. Look at rts games : Age Of Empires 2 is still played more than the 4th one because there are people who believes it's simply better and that 4 doesn't worth it. 2 still got updates, 4 as well. A previous fighting game barely never got updates. Only SNK does it by adding rollback in their previous games. Bamco ? They don't. It's like "oh, it's our previous game, it doesn't worth it anymore". Best example are fans who claim that SF3s is the best SF and continue to play 6 instead of 3S. If SF3S is the best, why do you intensively play the 6th one you don't enjoy ? I don't really understand this mentality in fighting games.

    • @GatsuRage
      @GatsuRage 2 місяці тому

      often new iterations of fighting games even if it had same characters they're very differently due to the mechanics added to that game like obvious example sf4, 5, 6 even if all of them has Ryu/Ken/Chun in every game they play very differently due to the in game mechanics. So is very expected that people would move on to the next installment just to have that new experience and refreshed gameplay.

    DNF Duel was one of my favourite fighting games. I played it to death on launch but threw the towel in when the player count got so small ranked would involve long waits then playing the same guy over and over.
    I remember turning to discord for matches a few times before feeling I just didn't have the energy for that.
    When the first dlc character arrived I gave ranked another go, finding myself playing the same low level guy over and over. It sucked.
    RIP DNF Duel, copium got me thinking they could pull a granblue and remake the game

    For me it was not a good experience with DNF duel.there was almost no content. The game had 300 players globally, after only one month. And it was and is… not a really good fighting game in my opinion. It has its charme, but i would not call it an objectively decent fighting game.

      It definitely filled the void of sort of crazy fighting games that Eighting is known for. Definitely not the greatest, but as they say, variety is the spice of life. Perhaps if they were more on time with the new characters and updates it would've enjoyed more time in the spotlight.

      @@DashFight definitely. I dont know how much they changed, but i still remember hitmans safe reversal in this „awakening“ state , or strikers absurd block strings. But what has to be said, the game was overpriced. The story was one of the most laughable things i have ever seen with static pictures and they charged full price for this game, if i remember correctly. Its a weird game, it almost smells like a simepl contract job from arc sys , i think dungeon fighter is highly lucrative and big in the asian market, so they just gave them money to make a fighting game without like a REAL vision and unique concept for it appropriate for 2023 or 2022? Altough i dont know how much arc system did , considering i did not even know eighting was involved
