LaGrange is a little town about 30 miles east of Austin Texas where I am from. The song is about a bordello out in LaGrange called the Chicken Ranch. "they got a lot of nice girls, ha!" Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds filmed the movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" in reference to said bordello there in 1982. The Chicken Ranch is no longer in existence. Imagine that!
Absolutely correct. You can still see some of the rubble that is left of the house on Google Earth. Me and a friend jumped the fence one night many years ago looking for artifacts with a metal detector. The neighbor across the street came running with a shotgun screaming at us, so we ran. Ahhh to be young again.
The main building of the Chicken Ranch was moved to upper Greenville Avenue in Dallas in 1977 and became the Chicken Ranch Restaurant with Miss Edna as hostess. Per The Chicken Ranch website: "The brothel was listed on the tax rolls as a poultry farm."
One of the best from the legendary little ole band from Texas, the whole Tres Hombres album is fire. Dee should hear the duo of Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago, she would love it! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎶
Its a straight forward bass line (when compared with like something Flea would put out), but it is simple, and the exact groove needed to allow the drums and especially guitar to do what they need to do. Not flashy, just solid like a steam train.
@@funkyjbass7762 I’m pretty sure Billy Gibbons, the guitarist, played the bass on Thug, instead of Dusty Hill, the actual bassist. That whole Eliminator album was drum machine and synthesizer, including the bass for most of the album, while Billy played guitar and sang. Linden Hudsen, a sound engineer buddy of the band, and Billy developed demos. Then Billy worked with Terry Mann, well renown engineer, to finalize tracks. You can find some of those demos on UA-cam, just look up Linden Hudsen/Hudson ZZ Top Eliminator Rehearsal Tapes. Linden did not get credited for his ideas and work with the band, however.
I saw this band live many, many times. The thing that always amazed me the most was the incredible wall of sound that this 3 man band could produce. I was always on the lookout for the 2 or 3 invisible members that my ears told me were up there somewhere. 🤣🤣
Always loved ZZ Top and always got a kick out of the fact that the drummer is named Frank Beard and he's the only one without a beard. Billy Gibbons is magic on the guitar and Dusty Rhodes always lays down a strong bass line. RIP Dusty.
I love the bass part when the main riff comes in again after the breakdown. It just pushes the groove so well! And of Billy Gibbons on the guitar and Frank Beard on drums are awesome.
For anyone who doesn’t know, the Deguello album! The cover art is my city San Antonio, TEXAS. The Battle of the Alamo. Deguello is the Spanish song played to the enemy as a psy op. It’s a beautiful sounding song usually played on trumpet. It means no quarter, no mercy, no prisoners, death to all. That’s exactly what Santa Anna’s overwhelming Mexican army did to the TEXAS defenders. Famously killed everyone. This made the TEXANS so angry, that at the battle of San Jacinto, they fought and defeated the Mexican army and made famous the battle cry: Remember The Alamo! It’s right in the middle of downtown and on this Z Z TOP album. It doesn’t get any more TEXAN than that.
Dee is not wrong. I have covered a lot of miles rolling with the Top. If you would like to sample a different side of the Little Ole Band From Texas, may I suggest the beautiful instrumental; "Asleep In The Desert."
I didn't know Dusty (the bass player), but he was somewhat of a neighbor of mine, Rest easy, Dusty. Chod is loving the "Texas Shuffle" that Frank Beard is laying down, Frank is the king. I think Dee is digging the guitar solos, IMO the best solos aside from "Comfortably Numb" for extended guitar.
I remember being a 15 year old high school freshman when this song was released. I'm pretty sure I rode my bike to Howard Brothers Department Store and bought the album. Simple, but amazing times.
I read an interview of Jimi Hendrix Years and years ago, and they asked who his favorite guitarest was, and he said Billy Gibbons. He's so different from anyone else.
Actually, the interviewer asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like being the best guitarist in the world and Jimi said, “I don’t know, you’ll have to ask Billy Gibbons”.
GREAT song by ZZ. I have a fond memory of seeing them in concert. It was late afternoon in Tampa Stadium and it was HOT. ZZ was opening for Deep Purple. We had never heard of them and we were totally blown away - they kicked butt! Purple came on after sunset and although they were wonderful as always, it was a little bit of a let down after ZZ Top!
There's a backstory to this song! Read this in a magazine issue dedicated to this group. They were on a break in the studio and the lead singer was just fooling around with that intro and the voice. The engineers in the booth kept the tape rolling and turned around and signaled the band to keep going, keep going! After several takes they could never quite replicate the original intro so that's the one on the record release. Lesson! Always keep the tape rolling! You never know what might happen!
ZZ Top MUST hear songs.. Jesus Just Left Chicago, Tush, Cheap Sunglasses, I'm Bad I'm Nationwide, Just Got Paid, Tube Snake Boogie, Heard It On The X, I Gotsta Get Paid, I Thank You, Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers.. And many more. Then move onto their newer stuff. Legs, Under Pressure, Sharp Dressed Man, etc..
Saw ZZ Top open for Rare Earth in 1973...they didn’t stay as a pre-band very long! Rare Earth was a well known band at the time, ZZ Top was known on the Texas circuit, until this tour! Afterwards they were a worldwide, loved and respected band.
Great power trio, one of the very best in rock history. The whole album, Tres Hombres is great. Try Master of Sparks, Waiting for a Bus.... any of it and I am sure the Misses will love it. Cheers! Then try any of the other albums from the 70's and you have a great one to review as well.
I have forgotten how many rock bands I have seen in the '70s and '80s because there were so many however I never got to see ZZ Top in concert. I just can't believe that
Now that you’ve had a chance to dive into the commercial side of ZZ Top, try I Need You Tonight or Just Got Back From Baby’s. This is what drove Texas fans of Electric Blues. This music helps to understand the culture of Texas boogie and blues from the late 60s until now.
@@arnoldcox9128 thank you... I do okay, but the analogy is Reverend Willy is like a fine dining steak, and by comparison, I'm a Five Guys burger, ha ha.
It's a song about a famous brothel here in Texas out in La Grange Texas that was called THE CHICKEN RANCH that inspired the Broadway musical and movie "the best little whorehouse in Texas"

Since you are listening to stuff you've heard , and playing it for your wife , how about some more TOMMY BOLIN , but , here's one you haven't checked out yet , you two will love the song DREAMER , no remastered , no mix , the original song DREAMER , by TOMMY BOLIN !! The Chicken Ranch brothel outside LaGrange was legendary among boys in Texas into the 1960's. For almost all, literally a legend, more a myth, since they would never see it. As was very roughly portrayed in the film, a crusading newspaper reporter in Houston stirred up enough to get it shut down. This was the era when similar things were happening. Galveston, the "open city", also known as Sin City, lost its self-declared law enforcement immunity and was nearly destroyed when the casinos and related enterprises were closed. For many, the reporter became a pariah. But it was mostly among people who had never seen the brothel and who did not recognize that it was as unpleasant a place as all such. Yet there was an awareness that an era of sorts was passing.
The early Masterpiece inspired by a Canned Heat Boogie. Been doing this with my Band for 20 years now and I always throw in a Canned Heat Bear Rap (re :Refried Boogie Rap The Bear)
Wher I come from in Michigan in the seventies...when cruisin around or anywhere...when this came on the radio, ya STFU and cramked it up... IT WAS A LAW!!!
I'm guessing by her age that she listens to Hip hop? I have 3 nieces, 2 who listen to hip hop and one who listens to all kinds of music including classic rock. This album is one I used to listen to on my way to tend bar at a biker bar and Dee is right! A Harley all day every day! Anyway, this would get me pumped up to go sling drinks. It was the good old days. Believe it or don't, but there were certain people who carried pistols and I couldn't serve them a drink until they gave the gun to me and it went into a locked drawer. Fruitless if you ask me cause they got the pistol back at the end of the night after they were all liquored up. So, you ought to listen to anything off the Deguello album! You can't go wrong!
Hey Chod, love your channel and the addition of your wife. Just one practical note: you need better balance between your volume and the song's. If I turn it up to hear you, the music's too loud. But if set the music well, you're inaudible. That balance can't be fixed for all videos, it needs to be set each one, because different uploaders had different gain on their upload.

One of the coolest 3 piece bands that ever existed , love their Texas Boogie Sound , there is only one ZZ Top

Lagrange is my all time favorite song...None better!
Saw them on 6 of their most classic tours in TEXAS because I’m TEXAN! Badass live band!
"Jesus Just Left Chicago" another ZZ great!
Although not the "flashiest" drummers, Frank Beard has to be one of the most consistent drummers out there. Dude sounds like a drum machine.
That entire Tres Hombres album along with Fandango is just killer.
