      Pretty much, while they need a basis in everything(hence why Roy later on Transfigures both Paint and Stone), to do the big specialties they have they need to much information to do everything, hence the specialization.
      It's also why Edward is known as a genius, his ability to learn and retain is massive, which is why he can do so much without truly specializing.

    • @TheJjcczz

      @@nahte123456Everyone does need to understand everything, the problem isn’t too much to remember it’s that every transmutation requires a valid alchemical formula which changes based on the composition of the initial material. Alchemists don’t share their formulas so if you want to create a metal bat you need to understand the composition of the source material, what you need to do to that source material to change it into metal, how to structure the metal into the desired shape, and then create a valid formula for that process which you will write down in a transmutation circle
      Ed is seen as gifted because he doesn’t need a formula or transmutation circle. As long as he understands the composition and the necessary steps to achieve his desired result he can perform the transmutation simply by clapping. In comparison Mustangs ignition glove has the formula for his flame alchemy which includes the alchemical symbols for water and air. That’s what allows him to transmute the water into hydrogen gas when fighting lust
      A single formula can do multiple things as long as it’s valid, but you can only fit so much into a single formula, that’s why you have specialists

    Guys, Scar doesn't "destruct" he "deconstructs". He can't just destroy the carbon inside something. He has to know how and with what it is bonded and separate it. Like Aaron said, for water for example, he has to know the structure of H20. Well, at least that's my understanding anyway. I'm sure a googler will correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @doubleasworkshop1692
      @doubleasworkshop1692 6 років тому +58

      Andy no. you are absolutely correct

    • @SalahDAd
      @SalahDAd 6 років тому +29

      Correct, and the reason Ed went for Carbon against Greed was because Greed's ultimate armor was made out of diamond, which is basically carbon, and transmuted it into charcoal, not because he was just transmuting "carbon" because it's everywhere anyway.

    • @mamluk
      @mamluk 6 років тому +15

      Correct. Alchemy is composed of three parts. Analysis, Deconstruction, Reconstruction. Scar's arm only does Deconstruction.

    • @orcmcc
      @orcmcc 6 років тому +10

      They keep forgetting about the Analysis component. Part of alchemy seems to be 'scanning' a material to find out what it is. I imagine Scar can do the Analysis part but only slowly, while the elric brother's analysis is near instantaneous.

    • @doubleasworkshop1692
      @doubleasworkshop1692 6 років тому +31

      Omniorcus NO. It's not analysis. It's understanding. Elric brothers can do high level instantaneous trasmutation because they have high level knowledge of chemistry, chemical bonds, ions, materials etc. Scar only has knowledge of basic materials. He only knows like iron, steel, carbon, water. For example scar doesn't know that saliva is a product of water hence he couldn't break out before edward said it was a type of water. Similarly give scar say, Bronze and he would not be able to destroy it since he doesn't know what bronze is actually made of.

    So Chimera is what Tucker was trying to make however the military already had them. This episode messed me up finding out that Zampano and the other guy were Chimeras as well. The ones in Dublith only carried the traits of their base animals but these military guys can actually transform.

    • @powersthetiddygoblin
      @powersthetiddygoblin 6 років тому +34

      Zarola Well the ones that were with Greed were early military experiments. Some like Dolcetto (the dog) only had instincts and enhancements to their senses, or like Martel (the snake girl) could stretch her body. But also there were more perfected ones of Greed's like Roa that did some transformation and Ulchi who became a full Crocodile human like Zampano and Jerso. Thats because they were the early experiments. Greed is attracted to ideas of immortality so I assume he sought out the labs they were in at first looking for that, but essentially he freed them in return for them working for him.

    • @CrownofMischief
      @CrownofMischief 2 роки тому +4

      And I think the difference with Tucker's work and the other chimeras is that with Tucker, he was supposed to make an animal more humanoid, but here they made humans more animalistic

    • @TheJjcczz
      @TheJjcczz Місяць тому

      The difference is Tucker was trying to create a talking Chimera, but due to the governments official ethics policies he wasn’t allowed to use humans only animals. His repeated failures drove him to break those rules and use his wife and daughter anyway. The Homunculi however were not bound by those rules and were attempting to enhance humans by merging them with animals, so they had no shortage of test subjects

    22:05 to answer Calvin's questions in Fullmetal Alchemist (2003), Ed stated that it was easier to perform human transmutation on humonculi because their bodies are naturally more malleable. Next point, Scar's destruction alchemy isn't destroying anything, he's separating atomic/molecular bonds. Which means he needs to know exactly what those bonds are. Achemy is the science of understanding, deconstructing, and reconstructing. Understanding is the hardest part, which is why every Alchemist has a specialty (one area that they have devoted a significant amount of their life to studying). Scar isn't an Alchemist so when he runs into more complex/uncommon material, it trips him up. His destruction is basic alchemy, any semi-skilled Alchemist could do it (Edward & Mustang already have). The scariest thing about Scar is that he is a much better fighter than most people given the fact he was raised as a warrior monk. Hopefully that cleared some things up.

      anyone who knows basic alkahestry can sense and track living beings because they follow the dragon's flow, basically the planet's chi, which centers around life. it's also why they can spot homunculi, because they sense the multitude of lives in them.

Youswell is also the town that May was suppose to be first introduce and the town that change her mind about Amestris in later chapter.

    Super long comment about my thoughts on alchemy/alkahestry.
    When Calvin brought up Greed (22:19), you need to remember that Ed and Al both know the composition of the human body by heart since they performed human transmutation. Greed was also already separating the carbon in his body to create the shield, hardening it to a diamond like consistency. (I also believe that Lust did a similar thing with her spears.) Ed took that and broke it down since he knew what was being used. Ed made the shield bridle by weakening the bonds between the carbon atoms.
    Honestly, I think the most fascinating thing about alchemy in FMA/FMAB is how Scar is able to deconstruct. Because of his tattoos which use a combination of both alkahestry and alchemy, he can pretty much deconstruct any element. We have seen him do this with water, metal, rock, and even humans (and his brother was able to use it to give Scar his other arm). Most alchemy circles are based on only one element/specialty (flame, biology, metals, chemistry etc.), so the fact that Scar really only has to think about what elements/material he is deconstructing is really interesting. It is almost like the clap alchemy of the Elrics since they are the circle for the transmutation, and Ed has basically done the same thing that Scar has without the use of tattoos since he understood the process.
    Although, Mei always seems to be using the same circles for her alkahestry transmutations, so that is possibly where the use of one pattern (star in circle) would come from. I just find that the differences between use the tectonic plates (alchemy) and the dragons' pulse (alkahestry) to be very interesting.
    I'm fascinated to know what the Elrics would do with alkahestry knowledge since it would allow them do distance alchemy and healing like Mei.

    Yeah, about the whole Yuki backstory thing.
    In the manga, that actually happened, and it's shown in the 2003 version of the full metal alchemist anime.
    But when Brotherhood came around they condensed the episode that had already been shown so as not to be repetitive.
    Problem is that one of the things that was cut was Yukis backstory, meaning he appears sort of randomly in fma: brotherhood.

    19:30 Ed's northern arm I believe is made from duralumin compounds. It's a real alloy that's a blend of aluminium and copper, and is commonly used in aircraft manufacturing.
    What's *really* neat is that in the real world, duralumin was developed around 1906 by German metallurgist Alfred Wilm, and in FMA:B, we've established that the timeline is around the 1910s (and also, ironically, in a Germanic-styled country). So, if duralumin was developed at about the same time, this would be a pretty new alloy, and most alchemists wouldn't know how to deal with it from a deconstructive perspective.

    I got your answer here Calivin: the difference between various grades of steel wouldn't matter because the carbon and the iron in it are not bonded together at a molecular level. Think of it as instant noodle flavouring: the boiling water is still just water molecules, just with noodle flavouring mixed in. Steel is still iron, just with carbon mixed in.

    From what I understood, you don't need to know the exact composition of an alloy, you just need what components are there and what kind of bonds they make. There can be various types of steel or steel-like alloy based on iron, but as long as they are mainly put together by the bond between iron and carbon atoms, they can be all decomposed, at least partially, using the same alchemy. As for Greed, he formed a exoskeleton made of carbon based material similar to diamond, and Ed simply changed the carbon structure into that of graphite.

  • @brandonchandlerMGnO
    @brandonchandlerMGnO 6 років тому +2

    Calvin brought up a good comparison between Greed and the Automail, my take on it is that Ed didn't just aim his alchemy to carbon, but to the bond between carbon atoms. Alchemist don't just aim for a specific element, but have to break down the bonds, even, for example, variations of steel will have similar bonds. An alchemist will have to break specific bonds to create something new, but scar doesn't have to worry about that.

    • @brandonchandlerMGnO
      @brandonchandlerMGnO 6 років тому

      I assume that Ed attacked carbon to carbon bonds because both diamond and grahite are made of carbon to carbon bonds.

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 6 років тому

      scar also has to target bonds, it's just that his deconstruction is somewhat more violent, possibly due to alkahestry. the issue is that telling someone you have a human body, then making your skin into what's essentially fullerene tells them that you've used the carbon in your body, and then it's a simple process to reverse that.
      ed's new arm is a lot more complicated than carbon skin, it may have iron and carbon in it, but that doesn't make it steel, and scar specifically tried to break steel.

We actually see Armstrong's parents later, and they look nothing like the rest of the family.

  • @amandawade7803
    @amandawade7803 6 років тому +1

    When I think of Alchemy and how it works, it helps to look at it like chemistry, because Alchemy is the original version of chemistry. When Ed was fighting Greed it wasn't just that he knew that his armor was made of carbon, Ed had to know what chemical reaction to use in order to weaken it.
    When you change O2 into CO2 you need to know the chemical exchange to achieve that.
    Plus every molecule and compound has a specific structure depending on the structure of the atoms of the elements involved.
    The reason you can make H2O is because the outer ring of the O element has 6 electrons and it needs 8 to be stable, and since H has only 1 electron two H's will make the O stable creating H2O.

    Scar can't deconstruct Ed's arm bc he DOESN'T KNOW what it's made of. We, the audience, now know that the arm is an alloy of carbon fiber and so on, but Scar has no fucking idea. Ed only was able to transmute the carbon of Greed's shield bc he figured out that it was there to be transmuted after Greed told him that his body was the same as human's. Scar, on the other hand, has been given nothing to go off to figure out what Ed's new arm is made out of.

    I talk about this more in my book, but, there are two parts to alchemy, the material/scientific and the spiritual/magical. The scientific side requires you to know chemical compositions and draw accurate circles with the correct symbols, while the magical side requires you to have a clear intention and intuitive grasp of what you're trying to do. Importantly, you can partially cover one side by being really good at the other, so if you've got a lot of experience with deconstruction like Scar does, you only need to have a vague idea of the chemical composition and you can intuit the rest. Problem is Scar doesn't even have a vague idea of what Ed's arm is made of--he thinks it's some kind of steel, but it's a complex carbon-fiber alloy.
    That's why people who have seen Truth and passed through the Gate can transmute without a circle, by the way. Their intuition for alchemy becomes enhanced to the point where the crude circle formed by clapping is close enough to cover for almost any circle, even a really complex one. It's also why the best alchemists specialize--they develop a strong intuition for their specialty, allowing them to use just one circle for many different related things. So for example Mustang's circles on his gloves allow him to do all kinds of complicated, subtle changes to the air around him, because he's developed an intuitive sense for that. (That's the real secret of Flame Alchemy--it's actually gas alchemy. Once you've got the flammable gases in the proportions and positions you want, you strike a spark the old fashioned way, and fwoosh.)

    Mr.Rhop. get this to the guys, Scar tried to deconstruct steel while Ed's new arm is completely carbon fibre, so no steel there, that's why it didn't work. the answer is very simple and I sorta think they are complicating it. also, compliment on the very nice catch on the play reference. characters waiting behind curtains waiting to enter to foreshadow the explanations. very harard to catch that one. but please tell em to not complicate aome things way more than it is necessary. maybe remembering consnstruction and deconstruction to will help

    With the big argument on the perceived inconsistencies of alchemy the way I see it is that when Ed transmuted only the carbon in Greed’s body, he knew there was other things in there as well but had a specific goal in mind. When Scar fails to deconstruct Ed’s arm, he thinks he knows the composition (at least roughly) but it turns out he was wrong. Scar can definitely deconstruct complicated things, he has deconstructed human flesh after all, and then he couldn’t have known the chemical composition of humans, so he must have done something similar to Ed’s trick, using something he knows to be abundant.

    The discussion makes me wish they'd watched it too, as the original really ingrained in yiu that the state alchemists are dogs of the military

    I know this is very late but the bonds between the atoms may play a part on wether they can use alchemy on it. Water and hydrogen peroxide have the same atoms in it, but the bonds between the atoms are different, it's shape is different in space, they might need to know those kinds of details about the matter before being able to deconstruct it and reconstruct it. Hope you see this ^-^

    Nah man, alchemy doesnt ‘destroy’ anything. The first episode explains what alchemy is (i believe). It was like understanding, decomposing and recomposing or whatever

  • @Ari33sa

    with Greed, Ed knew pretty good how the atoms where arranged. He knew it had to be diamond, and pretty perfect in that regard. And than he turned it into graphite. So he knew not only that there is some carbone somewhere, he knew how they were arranged. And that's I think how alchemy works.
    It's not enough that you know that somewhere certain atoms have to be. You have to know the actual molecules and compounds you wanted to change. It's about deconstructing and reconstructing atoms. For that you first have to understand how they are constructed in the first place, not that they are there.
    It's a bit like chemistry. you can't isolate certain atoms with always the same chemical reaction.

    With regard to the whole 'why not affect just the carbon?' thing, my personal bullshitting on it is that alchemy affects chemical bonds and structures more so than the elements themselves (covalent, ionic, etc). So alchemy-ing a diamond (pure carbon) would be different from alchemy-ing graphite (also pure carbon) because of how the carbon is bonded, which is the only difference between the two. To transmute both you would need to know and understand both structures, not just that they are made of carbon.
    But that's just my personal bullshitting :)

    Greed's Ultimate Armour was as hard as diamond because it essentially was. Pure diamond is made entirely of carbon, so when Ed figured it out he transmuted the carbon atoms into a weaker molecular state more similar to something weaker like coal, and then his weapons were able to pierce Greed's skin/armour.
