    The thing that people often fail to notice is that Mustang isn't attacking Envy the way he attacked Lust. He lets Envy recover. The only reason Envy is able to keep escaping is because Mustang is dragging it out for his own gratification. He wants to prolong Envy's suffering as long as possible. For a man who wants to repent for the horrors committed during wartime to gradually torture a living creature for no purpose other than his own satisfaction, that's where he is going too far.
    Neither Hawkeye nor Scar argue that Envy should be allowed to live. They simply believe that self-satisfying torture and mutilation are not the actions of a just ruler.

      Well, there is a line from another series that I often like to refer to when people make an argument like that. "Civilization is founded on the principle that we treat our criminals better than they treated their victims; that we not stoop to their level."
      Your argument appears to be oddly nihilistic. Your point, as far as I can parse it, is, 'Suffering and dehumanization don't matter. Everyone dies. There is no point to taking a moral stance.'
      ...which doesn't appear to be the most constructive outlook.

      He did go too far, and maybe he will agree with you at a later time but at the moment I don't think he cares, and I'm ok with that. Everyone has moments in their lives where they can reflect on and learn from. People either learn to better themselves or deny that they did any wrong and move on. I think we all know which types of people mustang and envy fall under. So I don't give a damn if mustang tortured envy.

      @@jakehamilton4053 It's hard to care about the person who pulled the trigger that caused the Ishval rebellion especially when there motive is they think human souls are just resources for their father.
      I can understand that Mustang is doing it for self gratification, but it can be argued that it is justice just the same.
      the only reasons not to, seem to be vengeance and torture are bad...and they have a time limit to stop Father.

    Mustang versus Envy is exemplified in Frederich Nietzche "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster." If Mustang carries through with his revenge, his soul will be corrupted is what the the author intended.

    I think the thing to keep in mind with Roy too is that he's already killed innocent people. He's already killed hundreds (at least) of innocent men, women, and children. He did so reluctantly, he feels guilt about it, but the fact remains that he killed them. He has already crossed MANY moral lines, things that he cannot come back from. As Calvin and Aaron point out, once you've done something, it is easier to justify it to yourself and do it again. So, having already killed innocent people, what happens when Roy crosses another line and uses his alchemy - what he vowed to use to protect people after Ishval - to slowly and painfully torture someone to death purely for his own satisfaction? He killed Lust as quickly as possible to save Al and Riza. The Promised Day is here, there are things they (and he) NEED to do in order to save thousands, and Roy is dragging out his torture of Envy as long as possible because it feels good to make Envy hurt. This is the same Roy who said after Ishval that he would do everything to protect the people he loves, to encourage others to protect each other...choosing to leave his bodyguard behind, then stay back and cause as much pain as possible to a creature he could have dispatched within seconds, no matter the consequences to himself or those he cares about.

    • @joshbi
      @joshbi 6 років тому +18

      It's also worth noting, in this case, that part of Roy's plan is to eventually have he and his fellow war 'heroes' put on trial. Not sure if they say that in the show, but it's mentioned in the manga.

    • @penpelo3485
      @penpelo3485 6 років тому +13

    • @GaimeGuy
      @GaimeGuy 6 років тому +12

      Also, when Envy dies, what happens to Roy's rage? It's certainly not quelled. Where does he direct it? The other homunculi? The military brass?
      It's not like Scar showed mercy to soldiers that were in his way, or targeted only alchemists involved with the war of extermination

    @lalalalisa41 6 років тому +696

    Envy definitely deserves everything that's coming to him, but the problem with going too far with Mustang is that we have to keep in mind he already killed thousands of innocent in the name of his country. He now wants to be better, remember? He said it himself. He wants to one day be Fuhrer and lead this country, but how can he be better when he's treating Envy like this? What he did to Lust was different to what he's doing to Envy. With Lust, that was just a soldier doing his duty. He killed her while being cold and focused. Here, it's just pure hatred and wanting to torture Envy because of his thirst for vengeance and a bit of self-satisfaction. That's mainly what the problem is. Killing Envy is necessary: good, but Mustang losing himself in his dark feelings and thirst for vengeance: bad.
    Honestly, despite feeling satisfied with what was happening to Envy, I was also getting a bit worried and even scared just looking at Mustang's face. We've seen a bit of his dark side before here and there, but it was fully coming out in this episode and it was not a pretty sight. For me, that's the most scary thing about his "flames of vengeance". He's letting it consume him, and he no longer feels like Mustang anymore.

    • @PaintedHoundie
      @PaintedHoundie 6 років тому +6

      Idk i felt like it was completly justified and that they shouldve just told him thats should or calm down instead of the cliche you'll become no better way to x type of dialogue. love everything about the scene i just think its weird the way he was talked to, especially from riza.
      Envy is pretty responsible for everything, including why mustang is who he is so im conflicted so idk.

    • @lalalalisa41
      @lalalalisa41 6 років тому +41

      hennie Kru I'm not saying it isn't justified. I'm saying we have to keep in mind that the way Mustang is going about dealing with Envy is not going to help him if he wants to one day lead his country. This is just rage-fuelled vengenance with a bit of self-satisfication. He's not even thinking of his country anymore. So tell me, how is any of this going to make him a better person or leader for his country? How does any of that make him better than Bradley?
      Weird how Riza talked to him? I disagree, considering Riza herself has a very personal stake in what Mustang does with his flame alchemy. Beginning of next episode says it all. Out of everyone, Riza makes the most sense when she's trying to stop Mustang. That and he did order her to stop him if he ever strayed off his path.

  • @dragoes9

    There's a difference between no mercy and torture and that's the line Mustang is straddling. Mustang never enjoyed the fire, it was a heavy burden that he used because he didn't want to die and he wanted to protect the people he loved. Even when he killed Lust he didn't do it to hurt her, he did it to protect Riza, Al, and Havoc. Now he's taking pleasure in taking Envy to school, Power should always be a burden, once you start to enjoy it it becomes a noose

    The problem with revenge is that you never know how far you could actually take it, even if the culprit deserves it.
    If you're the affected (or victim) and you sought vengeance, you are no longer the helpless one but the aggressor, and the suspect....the victim.

I've seen many reactors just start talking or arguing about shit in the middle of an episode. And they don't even pause the video before doing it. And miss some important parts on the screen while they were arguing. And then later, they get confused!😂

      Also with Lust, it was self-defence in a way. She nearly killed him and Havoc (and she had thought she killed them) and was going to do the same with Hawkeye and Alphonse. His hands were tied and she had to be put down. He let Envy regenerate before burning them again and again cause Roy wanted to prolong their suffering.

      Kimblee goes to heaven. He's seen rising along with Envy and some of the immortal army. And Kimblee is perhaps the must excusable of the villains. Unlike the rest, who are ruthless and evil, he is simply amoral. He does what he wants when he wants - so long as he follows his ideals and peoples follow their own he has no problem. It's when people begin to betray their own codes that he gets angry - which is why he questioned Alphonse on using the philosopher's stone. He came to the conclusion that Alphonse is able to justify this action while staying within his code, and so he holds back on being too harsh when fighting him.

    • @NilCaelum
      @NilCaelum 6 років тому +10

      Freddeboy28 I don’t think it’s quite the same. I agree that killing and torturing mustang would be kind of justified but he would be a bad target.
      Mustang was just a dog of war following orders.
      Envy is an actual monster who believes in the cause and enjoys killing.
      If an ishvalen was going to get revenge mustang wouldn’t be all that high on the list. Pretty much anyone in central should be higher.

    • @Freddeboy28
      @Freddeboy28 6 років тому +6

      Envy's kill count is 2 that we know of. The Ishvalian child and Hughes. Envy was also just following Orders from Father. I highly doubt Envy was allowed to start the war just because he felt like it.
      Mustang is a well known "Hero of the Ishvalian war (of extermination)" so he would likely be a target after the Fuhrer.
      Alot can be said and has been said about Envy. Sarcastic/sadistic humor and has always been a way for people to hide their true feelings for example. And his true feelings become pretty clear in the next episode.
      Also being a shapeshifter he was the obvious choice for shooting the child. If he had refused, well... Hello Father's boiling cauldron.
      But i don't wanna join another Envy discussion. Kill him and be done with it. Mustang is in the wrong with torturing him, i think.
      And "He started the war, Envy basically murdered everyone". No. Not in my eyes atleast. Ishval was a powderkeg just waiting to explode since the day Central's army marched in.

    • @thedanceoftuila6999
      @thedanceoftuila6999 6 років тому +4

      Sort of. The thing is that Envy takes pleasure on killing and does so deliberately, but Mustang hated every second of the war, he ran into a trap. Mustang is no saint, and I don't like when people only see the good on him (and Brotherhood frames it that way more than the manga), but Envy is just terrible. Besides, if Mustang was being tortured by Ishvalans I think *he* would see that as justified.

    Roy giving in to his wrath is pretty a neat parallel between Wrath and Mustang. It's one thing for a person to savor a well justified vengeance, but in a militaristic totalitarian state where the fuhrer plays the role of judge, jury, and executioner, Mustang must be held to a higher standard of virtue if he will be a worthy leader in such a political structure.

      Mats Martensson let's just say "value," and "imperative," are necessary fiction for the sake of practicality. Genuine nihilism and phyrronic skepticism is really not the best springboard for any sort of narrative-be it fictional or in reality.
      Well I suppose you can reduce everything to ethical consequentialism via game theory, but even then, at its core, game theory functions under the assumption that being better of is more preferable than acting in such a way that you get the short end of the stick. So if we dismiss ethics, and by extension politics, through the dismissal of any reference point by which we measure how anybody should act-whether via value ethics or consequentialism- why bother with anything at all?
      Should we perhaps measure action via pleasure and pain? But just the same, how can seeking pleasure and avoiding pain be an acceptable point of reference for our actions if: 1. pleasure has no value hence there is no imperative to seek it; 2. Pain has no value and there is no imperative to avoid it?
      So again, if there's no such thing as meaning (genuine nihilism,) and existence is an epistemological desert where nothing can be truly known (phyrronic skepticism,) why would any character/subject not just commit suicide soon as the story begins/ soon as he is born?

    • @gabsanchez
      @gabsanchez 6 років тому

      Mats Martensson when I say "necessary fiction," I meant it a la Nietzsche see: ifpe.wordpress.com/2015/09/18/nietzsches-necessary-fictions-become-psychoanalytic-narratives/
      I'm not in disagreement with you that "value," "worth," "necessity," are illusions. However, I argue that some of these illusions are necessary for the sake of practicality, otherwise if we dismiss all of these illusions and follow it to its logical conclusion, we will always end up with the question of meaning. Why is there meaning as opposed to there being none, and by extension why is existence more preferable to non-existence? Couldn't you also make the argument that meaning is just as much an illusion as value and worth? And isn't the truth only true when it is coherent with its point of reference? Or are you referring to the truth as something metaphysical?

    The problem with Mustang doing this to Envy is that he's playing judge, jury and executioner at once, eventhough his stated goal with becoming Fuhrer is to revamp the country precisely so that it's leader can't ever again be judge, jury and executioner the way Bradley was to Ishval. It's hypocritical of him, no matter how many times Envy has earned the punishment he gets.

    Leaders must be the most restrained and forgiving of people. Because they have the power to do. If they let themselves they can do great evils. Leaders must have restrain, one evil act makes others easier. Mustang doing this would forever tip the balance on how he would rule.

    Honestly, each of the Homunculi has had somewhat redeeming qualities, excluding Lust. Greed's is his honesty and laid back attitude/rebellious anti-hero tendencies. Gluttony's is his childlike demeanor. Wrath's is his seemingly love for his wife. Pride's is his seemingly love for his mother. Sloth's is similar to Gluttony's, with his simple-minded, just do what your told mentality. Envy's is his occasional back and forth, almost friendly like, banter with Ed. Lust doesn't really have anything I can think of, except for maybe how she looked after Gluttony, perhaps in a motherly way. They're all fucked up, some more than others, but they occasionally do show somewhat likable traits; again, some more than others.

    Roy is my favorite character but Envy is my favorite Homunculus, i'm confused!!! And guys, I don't think that Envy have a gender since he can change forms and his base form is a worm like creature or a giant monster when he is powered up by souls, but everyone refers to it as a he, so Envy is a guy by popular demand!

    I don't think the issue is Mustang enjoying Envy's pain, it's that his own pain and rage are in control, rather than him being in control of himself. It's less the what or how and more the why.

    Spoilerss for next episode
    10:42 (Pause) Great attention to detail: Mustang clicks his fingers using his middle finger and thumb ONLY (See 4:31). Envy wouldn't know that, and that's also probably what tipped Hawkeye off, (her face at 10:42 is her QUESTIONING what Mustang is doing, NOT "Oh, it's only you Roy"). We know that the, "Call's me by my first name", is a lie, therefore this is pretty much one of the few things that can get her to question Envy's legitimacy as Mustang.
    The other clues might be - How he reacted to her insubordination when he's in his rage
    - How he's so accepting of her coming along to murder Envy with him, something Mustang would ... NEVER do since he wants to fuck up Envy by himself as revenge.
    Fkin Love this show man

    I would find it difficult trust someone who takes pleasure in someone else's torture. Even Hitler or something- there should be nothing pleasurable in torturing someone, even if they deserve it. I understand doing it as a 'punishment', but clearly drawing enjoyment and satisfaction is a sign of an unbalanced mind in my opinion.
