I'm sure there were people who heard this song in the 1980s and said things like, "who is this Parr guy? Today's music sucks. Not like the good music we had with Grand Funk Railroad and Spenser Davis Group." And 40 years from now there will be someone saying, "Today's music sucks. Whatever happened to good music like Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars?" It's scary to think about but one day some 60 something year old woman is going to look back and favorably compare Justin Beiber to whatever is the most popular music of that time.
I was a rock DJ at KLBJ-FM in Austin Tx in the 80's. I have a video of myself on-air in Dec. 1984. A friend had a video camera (kinda rare then) and set it up in the studio to record me. This is one of the songs i played that night! Man, 40 years!!!
I remember being in 3rd grade and my mom carrying me to school in her Iroc Camaro with the T Tops out blasting this along with some like it hot by the power station and many other 80's songs.. and me thinking I had the coolest mom in the world.
I think she still is ,only these days she rocks out in a GMC Yukon instead of a Camaro. It's a weird feeling I'm 41 now, but it still puts a smile on my face every time my kids will go spend the weekend with her ,she'll come pick them up and it never fails she pulls up with the stereo blasting and my kids take off running.
HOLY SHIT! I just clicked on this not knowing what it was, and now it's coming back to me! I was about 7 in 1984, so I didn't really know who sang this, although parts of this song have been coming in my head for 35 years. I got some of my childhood back.

The 80's were totally awesome to the max!(*twisting gum with finger*) No cell phones, no internet, way less bullying (and if we were, we shrugged it off) students had a fear of getting caught misbehaving because the staff had control to punish them, we respected adults, we actually talked on the phone or met face-to-face to hangout with our friends, going skating, video arcades were our version of Heaven, parachute pants (lol I threw that in to see if you're paying attention), and riding around all day or hanging out at the mall with your partners in crime, was the BEST TIME EVER!! 😎 *~sigh~*

I will never forget the sounds, sights and smells of those slightly under-lit pizza parlors and the anticipation of exploring the little room or nook in the back to see what arcade machines they had. I miss those days so very dearly.

This hit from John Parr was heard on the Miami Vice episode, Florence Italy, which aired on February 14, 1986. Miami Vice will always be one of my all time favorite shows. It was the first to combine MTV with police action drama.
I totally remember the episode, the song played during the opening seen. If i recall some unidentified picks up a hooker and the last seen with this song playing is her body being dumped on the street and the car peeling off, and then the shows intro.

Nope he was 33 here and back then he was looking young. When we grew up in the 80's and saw Elvis back then we thought he was older. It's always like that. Every generation thinks prior generations look so much older. It's got its own phenomenon.
I remember Weird Al Yankovic being on MTV , playing this video (yes, they played music videos back then), and then critiquing John Parr by showing the range of his emotions through the video ( he had the same expression on his face in every shot.) Good times.
