If there’s one message I could give to all young metal heads, this is it: You’ll end up stiff if you don’t bang like Cliff.
No he was not. Burton was an excellent bass player, but the heart of the band was - and still is -James Hetfield. The day Hetfield changed, the band turned to a different direction.
I know everyone says 1989-1991 James was the best, but I personally love this younger James more, just something about him being young and wild while having that raw voice that I like
Man Kirk absolutely nailed and totally shredded through that solo , amazing how good these guys were so early on in their career , it's like they were instantaneously living legends from their first 3 albums alone, nobody in the thrash metal scene could level with shit from this album, true musical genius's, this stuff will never get old no matter how old it or myself may get , itlll always hit just as hard , absolutely amazing

It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that only 11 years after this, they were releasing Load. I love Load and Reload for what they are, but they are just so different from 80’s Metallica.

AGS 15 It doesn't have to sound like Live After Death, but they probably could have produced one during the Puppets tour. Bands like Maiden already had live releases on their second tours.
It cost a lot for a good live recording and Metallica didn't really start banking until the end of the Master of Puppets tour/beginning of the Justice era.

I always really loved the era of 84-87ish. Lars really always made an effort to play the drum parts how they were written through that time period. A lot of people glorify his playing even through the early 90’s but the facts are that he started getting lazy around 88 and 89. For example, go watch the four horsemen from seattle 89 and you’ll see that Lars completely simplifies the kick pattern instead of doing the triplets in the original recording. It’s a shame he stopped playing like he did in this video.

Kill em All was pure energy and a statement of force, a beautiful baby. But Lightning, Puppets and Justice were just the holy triad of Thrash; these are far better and progressive albums and you can clearly feel Cliff's influence. Black and everything after that was "we need money from people who don't like fast songs, sorry not sorry".
Seen them here when they we're "TIGHT" and in their prime and also at the Monsters of Rock in Akron, Ohio at the Akron Rubber Bowl. Can't even BEGIN to describe it! Cliff was so SUPERB and AMAZING here! If only I had a time machine...1st place I'd go!

I expected other people to comment on this but I didn’t see any. If you notice just after the big solo ends and James starts singing again, Kirks guitars breaks a string, you can see it popping off around 4:44 and at that point on you start hearing this occasional squeaky/screetchy sound. That is the sound of that loose string swinging around still attached, you can see him trying to deal with the broken string afterwards while still trying to play the song. Good thing it broke AS SOON as the solo was finished instead of during. Good timing.

Even in 1983 Lars played everything exactly like the recording and it sounded so organic. He never missed a beat.
