While watching this video just now I had a random memory of when I was a teenager. (I'm 50 years old now, as of June first.) I had applied for a job at Taco Bell and I went in to my job interview with my hair looking much the same as Cliffs hair, and my jean jacket covered in Metallica patches. And on the front chest of the jacket the patch "METALLICA ALCAHOLICA" My interviewer had commented on my super long hair, and I saw him looking at that patch on the front of my jacket too. Hmmm, they never did call me back, lol. Well, their loss as I've always been one of the hardest working most reliable employees at any job I've ever worked. But, my gain as fortunately can say now that I've never worked at Taco Bell! Ha... Or any fast food chain for that matter. Phew, that was a close one, almost did. I have to thank Metallica for helping me avoid that fate ha ha. Thank you!
Nick Kechris That's because as u get older u aren't as good and he probably could barely play it then because it's one if Dave's kick ass Solo's don't get me wrong Kirk is fucking awesome but to me Dave's a better guitar player
Good lesson here for young bands. No matter what the style of music, how tight you are, or how talented the players are, this sounds obvious but you gotta have the songs. Countless similar bands faded away but Metallica became one of the biggest bands in the world because they had the songs. I've seen so many bands in clubs who were great except for that one very vital ingredient, and after the show I couldn't remember a single chorus.
That plus they had a creed basically. Don't sell out, hate the man, and death to false metal. Us young guys were vulnerable to those messages, and they played us well. At 57 now, i still never forgive them (although i understand why..i'm not naive) for selling out.. putting out a music video from "And Justice".

I’m going to see a show in January for some friends that live down the street. It’s totally different music, but I’m still looking forward to this feeling. Seeing a band live; feeling their energy; taking in and drinking the waves of sound; undeterred by anything in the waking world. Simply floating in an ocean of vibration and emotion. Good god I’m in love with music.

First time I saw them in 83, it was Cliffs 5th of 6th gig with them. I saw them open up for Raven and headline with Armored Saint opening. 1983 was an epic year for Bay Area thrash.
Hatfield is an underrated singer because a lot singers try to sing super high and do difficult shit on the album and then play live and can’t live up to how they sound on the album. He Always sang in a way that he could sing live and sound good. It’s realistic to maintain…
I found Metallica in 1985. I was in 10th grade and my good friend, Raif, was a bass player in a band called BDH. He idolized Cliff and played and had the same stage presence. I wish I knew whatever happened to my buddy, and I SURE wish Cliff hadn’t left us so early. Well, my friend changed my life by introducing me to Metallica! It was totally ME! I felt like these guys were thrashing FOR ME! I was hooked! The most epic band ever!
I love it , there putting so much passion into this show and the crowd is blind to see the talent in front of them. I always hated when they didn’t say “DESTROY”
com'n ... those guys were real supporters none of the bands had tunes on the radio, so they just went there to support the movement, whatever band performed, and clearly they didn't know the song yet. Those years were the brotherhood of metal.
Was wondering if anybody else caught that. To his defence he seems like he might have had a touch of alcohol in his system AND he beasted it out and down picked the entire thrashy riff before that where as Kirk alternate picked the descending scale part of the riff.
James seems kinda drunk in this video, but he was barely 20 years old here, so that seems a bit suspicious. Maybe some bars in Chicago have a drinking age of 18. That's the age limit that we have at pubs in Sweden.
This is 1983: James 20, Lars 19, Cliff 21, Kirk 20. I'm blown away how awesome this is for a bunch of young 20 year olds

Thank you!
Fun fact kirk worked at McDonald's, I think it was for funding a Marshall.
I've been in the work force for 40 years now. I can honestly say that the long hair, headbanger guys are the hardest working.

He also tried to be Gene when switched instruments with Jason
I love that rage that u could feel from James ...
Cliff might be out of spotlight on the stage but you can still see and feel how hard he is rocking. Respect!
Hate to say it but on this recording his bass is nearly in audible

I was at this show. It was at the metro in chicago. A guy grabbed kirk's guitar during the show and got his ass kicked by the stage crew.
haha hooligans
Rite on man that's a cool story 👍

Hahaha! That's true bro!
You could hear every note from Kirk's solo so clear smth that now days u can't
Nick Kechris because now he uses his fucking whaw whaw to much
I think it might be the active pickups but idk
Lars playing at normal speed also helps!
He’s getting old lol
Nick Kechris That's because as u get older u aren't as good and he probably could barely play it then because it's one if Dave's kick ass Solo's don't get me wrong Kirk is fucking awesome but to me Dave's a better guitar player
After hearing all those awesome versions from 1985-1999, it’s refreshing to hear this version again and feel their raw energy in the early days!
Well duh.
@@Mr1Tanker "never sell out"?
I would like to enter the Black album into evidence
People are still mad about Metallica “selling out?” 😆
@@thomashamilton9658 You say "well duh" but all the bands who write horrible songs but just can't figure out why they aren't playing stadiums instead of bars with ten people still don't seem to get it.
It is a bittersweet feeling seeing Cliff playing... He was a legend and I think this world didn't deserved this kind of man... Rest In Peace Cliff!

Amazing quality.
Better than most videos in 2018.

Blows your mind when you stop to think that this guitar that James is playing is the same guitar that he used to record most of 72 Seasons' songs.
Metallica in the raw...the fragility of a new band with the absolute genius of what was to come. I love this band
The birth of thrash metal. Who'd have thought and still jamming 37 yrs later.
These dudes and Exodus, all along with the tons of those bay area bands who never went anywhere

I will give Metallica credit for doing the first long play thrash album but thrash was already here just wasn't labeled yet

I like to think that Cliff Burton is the Jimi Hendrix of metal. Both died to young but at least they lived long enough to leave behind a legacy.
Cliff is the Hendrix of metal bass. In my opinion Randy Rhoads is the Hendrix of metal guitar.
I had a dream I died and was in Heaven.I was talking to Jimi Hendrix when I saw Buckethead.I asked Jimi if that was Big B. He replied. That Is God.He just wishes he was Buckethead. Before you dicksuckers get your panties in a wad.Its just a joke.Buckethead Bless.

Some of them could probably tell that they were going to be big.
A lot of upcoming superbands have a very special presence when they are on-stage.
Not in Chicago they didn't.
NoCal maybe.
Black Sabbath is the One not Metallica
The good ole days of metal. Classic, solid and they sound great.
Freaking fire. The tone, James’ vocals, everyone’s playing. Incredible…Kirk, Lars, Cliff… every single one. RIP Cliff Burton.

First time I saw them in 83, it was Cliffs 5th of 6th gig with them. I saw them open up for Raven and headline with Armored Saint opening. 1983 was an epic year for Bay Area thrash.
I was there next to you. Do you remember me?
Hatfield is an underrated singer because a lot singers try to sing super high and do difficult shit on the album and then play live and can’t live up to how they sound on the album. He Always sang in a way that he could sing live and sound good. It’s realistic to maintain…
Super picture quality for being early 80's!!

Impossible
James seems kinda drunk in this video, but he was barely 20 years old here, so that seems a bit suspicious.
Maybe some bars in Chicago have a drinking age of 18.
That's the age limit that we have at pubs in Sweden.
