Thank you for putting out this video. I had replaced my (5) floor speakers at the end of March and noticed that I was now able to select Auro3D as a surround mode which previously was not available to me. I had thought that replacing my floor speakers had caused the change with Auro3D but now I realize it was an update from Marantz. I had the updates taking place automatically so I never received the update notification it just happened. As you mentioned in your video it is better to uncheck the automatic updates and be notified of upcoming updates and what they are adding. I do find Auro3D to be a big improvement for movies especially those not encoded with Dolby Atmos or DTSX.
Great video! looking for advice - I've recently upgraded from a Marantz SR7011 to SR7015. Already had a 5.1.2 setup (the .2 setup being Onkyo SR-410 upward firing speakers). Am now looking to ditch the Onkyo upwards, and move to a .4 setup with the intent of placing height speakers for a setup that will be compatible for Atmos and Auro 3D. The home theatre setup is in the living room, so there are constraints. Some info about the room: Dimensions: 6m x 5m Ceiling Height: 2.7m MLP: approximately 3.5m from TV Sofa is against the back wall, but MLP is 80cm from the back wall. Basically, I'd like to install a pair of Dali Alteco C1's as my top front height speakers, in parallel with the existing front left and right speakers (ignore the lack of the front left speaker, I had to move it whilst some wiring in the back of the shelves had to be addressed). The front left and right speakers sit to the left and right of the TV. So far so good. My OH will not let me install a second pair of Dali's as rear heights - we already have an internal A/C unit that hangs off one of the walls, so the room would get too cluttered. Thus, for my rear speaker setup, I'd like to go for in-ceiling speakers. A March 2023 firmware update has given the Marantz A/V the ability to process Auro 3D through in-ceiling speakers, and I'm looking to take advantage of this to preserve some aesthetics in the living room. My question for the experts on this forum is: the Marantz A/V supports Auro 3D using three configurations for ceiling speakers: (i) Top, (ii) Middle and (iii)Back. Given my sofa is against the back wall, and I'm limited to in-ceiling speakers for the rear heights, where would you recommend I install the in-ceiling speakers: in the middle position (which would be 30 degrees forward of the MLP or in the rear position, flush against the where the ceiling meets back wall?
Very excited to see Marantz move in this direction with that update Jon. I’m curious to know if our McIntosh MX123 & older Marantz SR7010 will have the same update. I’m out of town until April but will check when I get home. Thanks for the info about this update!
While they are not planning to add DIRAC to models releases before last Fall, it is possible that some of the other features, like the Auro-3D for Top speakers could be added to older models. -Jon
Been on the fence for which pre/pro to get. Very excited to see that the AV10 offers this ability that you describe, to add "extra" outputs for VOG and center height. As far as I can tell, the AV10 at $7000 is the only preamp/processor with this feature. As well, support for DTS:X pro? I think Emotiva will have new processors soon as well to support DTS:X pro, but I wonder if they will allow for the assignable outputs for the Auro3D support. I doubt it!! I think most companies are banking on the eventual lack of Auro3D content in the future... Hard to predict at this point!
Sorry that happened to you, but thanks for sharing. That knowledge should help others plan by backing up to USB or manually recording the settings in a document. -Jon
watched many tutorial videos on setting the speaker size between large and small. drove me nuts i couldnt find that section within speaker/layout amp assign.. firmware update removed it and when you chage your cross over to 80hz it's technically considered as small .. much frustration for a newbie.
Yes - I recall it was the March update this year that removed the use of Small/Large as too many owners found it confusing. My understanding is that a crossover setting of “Full Range” now equates to the old “Large” value and any numeric value (setable between 40Hz and 250Hz) is aligned to the “Snall” speaker value in prior versions. By setting to “Full Range” you are instructing the receiver to send all frequencies to the speaker without redirecting any low frequencies to a subwoofer. If you set to a crossover frequency then only frequencies above that value will be sent to the speaker while lower frequencies are directed to the subwoofer. However, there is an option for subwoofer output. The default is “LFE” only as described above where only low frequencies are sent to the subwoofer below a defined crossover point. The other is “LFE + Main” which will send low frequencies for all speakers even if they are set to “full range”. -Jon
John, how is the continued comparison going between the Emotiva and Marantz going? Do you still feel that the Emotiva is superior and have you had any bugs in the Emotiva? 7:22
They got rid of (on the Denon anyway) the goofy small vs large speaker size spec under "Manual." Now on the crossovers screen you can select "full range" which is effectively no cross over--which is effectively "large" in the old terminology menu. Much fewer beginner mistakes.
John - Thanks for call attention to that change. I agree - the "SMALL vs LARGE" setting wasn't intuitive. What they have moved to with "FULL" for no crossover point makes a lot more sense. I am going to raise this up in the next video. What still baffles me is that settings the Denon/Marantz AVRs still make for the crossovers after calibration (Audyssey or DIRAC). Particularly with Audyssey, the front speakers, including the center channel gets set to FULL - why? then 40Hz for surround side and back and 60Hz for height speakers? It does not seem to be based on speaker capability. Jon
It affects only whether low freqs are sent to those channels or not. Majority of speakers are "FULL", even small bookshelf speakers. Only dedicated surrounds with one small cone are considered "SMALL" for the purpose of the setting. Part of the problem is people over-think all of this, when the reality is much simpler. Worst of all, people do not test and simply listen to what difference, if any, it actually makes. In the SMALL/LARGE case, it just doesn't send such low freqs to the speaker.
It is better described as a high pass filter. In my testing, it seems to cut off anything below around 500 Hz. You lose bass and some mid definition with it set to SMALL.
Haven't downloaded the update yet myself but I wonder if the HEOS refresh also applies to the time that it takes HEOS to start. With the old firmware the worst thing is when you last listened to something with HEOS and then forget to switch to something else, next time you power up the AVR you get to wait forever for HEOS bootup since it's apparently doing all sorts of scanning for internet radio stations and whatnot. I even made a HEOS account just in the hope of the bootup being faster, like maybe it won't do all that if it remembers my settings but no luck. It's a terrible user experience. I am of course also really interested in Dirac. My question is, what's the minimum amount of stuff that I need, in addition to buying the license? A PC (and a laptop) I have, but apparently the Audyssey mic won't do, so another mic at least (MiniDSP Umik-1 seems to come up a lot)? And a mic stand I suppose, the Audyssey cardboard rocket probably won't do either. Or is there some easy DIY hack for the microphone stand?
It's weird I have the AV10 and the update hasn't pushed yet. I do have it set up to auto update and thought maybe it did update on it's own...but when I check the menu there's no dirac option. I wouldn't be using it as of yet anyway, because I'm running two subs and there sub bass management won't be available till 2024.
Do any speakers suit for atmos? I found 5.1 Logitech X-530 speakers and mounted them for height and bass. Also, I used to have an Atmos option in the sound mode when playing from TV, now it disaapeared, only "DSurr", "DTS Neural:X", "Auro-3D", "Auro-2D Surround", "Multi Ch Stereo", "Stereo". I was watching La La Land from a file on the HDD of my smart TV and I was a bit uncomfortable that I had to choose DSurr not Atmos. The Logitech bass is always either too boomy or if I tune it down then can't hear it at all. But it is nice to experiment with a 7.4.1 system. I am on the search for a bass. Will you be buying Dirac live for your cinema 50? I don't really get why anyone would want to restrict themselves with the limited bandwidth version...
Since the update it did auto enable atmos when something came on the roku that I guess was in atmos. I was able to select out of it and choose auro. Is your file in atmos? Have you been able to find any source to play atmos?
Thanks for the suggestion. Probably yeah the file did not support Atmos. When I turn on Netflix I see "✉️DD+", "Atmos/DSurr", "•NeuralX", "Auro-3D", "Auro-2D Surround", "Multi Ch Stereo", "Stereo".
So I added many Atmos movies on my HDD and none of them show the Atmos option on the AVR. only DSurr. I only have TV with HDD and the AVR. Is there a possibility to play the Atmos movie files without the PC?
I did some investigation and it seems to be dependent on the Smart TV. Asaid from the Marantz Cinema 50 that I received in January this year with the first shippings of the product, on the black Friday in November 2022 I also bought a flagship Sony TV XR-A90K. And I must admit, the experience is embarrassing on so many levels. I need to surf for 3rd party apps from a very limited choice for each little thing I need to do and then there is very limited memory where to install them. And then to find out that most of the apps don't do their work as intended. Chromecasting, viewing files from HDD, playing files from HDD or for example reading ebooks from the screen. Everything is malfunctioning. Screencasting or chromecasting for example is still not working for me! About playing video files..... Most of the high-quality video files have several audio tracks built in, for example one with DTS and other with Dolby sound. VLC is a very nice app to use for playing files but it seems that the Marantz does not recognize the Atmos content from most of the files when opening with VLC. Even though I am choosing the audio track in a very clear way. I currently have a default media player app as well, which has a less well developed user interface but when opening the files with that application the chances of the AVR recognizing Atmos format is much higher. Some files are still not recognized. But I am still happy that I got some files working! I have movies like John Wick 2,3 and Blade Runner new and old, and many others waiting to be enjoyed. Searching for a new subwoofer but the home theater is already very good ;)
It’s a pricing decision Marantz/Denon made. Product Managers determine, sometimes told by senior management, how much margin (profit) they will make for the company. What they are saying with this structure is that they believe their brands command a higher price for similar feature sets then Onkyo brands. Onkyo products sell for less money with more feature and include Dirac. Do Marantz/ Denon equivalent models perform that much better? I can envision their managers don’t want to cut into margins by including Dirac at the same price. They either had to raise prices for these models, making them even more expensive vs Onkyo or sell it as an option not to lower their profits. Could backfire but they are banking of the strength of their brand vs Onkyo. -Jon
Great that it is this way! I wouldn’t want to pay for Dirac, as XT32 is great and enough for me. I would need to pay at least 200€ more for 3800 if Dirac would be included. Now it was 1100€, nice bang for buck :)
