    Marantz Cinema 50 owner here.
I bought the Marantz mistakenly thinking the Dirac would be included.
After using the Audyssey that completely sucks, and recovering from the Dirac sticker shock, this video has convinced me to move forward with the Dirac. New subscriber also.

Interesting video. My biggest concern with Dirac is the price. For now, I am keeping my Marantz SR8015. I am currently a fan of the fairly new, free, Audyssey One script. No need to buy a calibrated mic, the script takes advantage of the REW beta to process the ADY file. I was super impressed how much better my 5.1.4 system sounded. I was blown away how good this free tool works. And before someone corrects me, the Audyssey One script does require you buy the $20 Audyssey MultEQ app for your phone.

I just found AV1 Evo right on time since he just finished it (it is final now, called Maestro). I am familiar with REW, so I mostly know what he is doing, and it is fantastic that he automated it. That would take a long time to do manually. It may do a better job than Dirac. I am not spending $600 to find out. Biggest advantage that Dirac has (REW as well) is the UMIK-1. It is much better than the Audyssey mic, which makes a big difference. Very disappointing that the Audyssey MultEQ-X does not let you use the UMIK-1 and instead wants you to buy a calibrated version of the one that comes in the box for $80.

Thanks for the great initial impressions! By the way, you're not supposed to leave the foam on the UMIK-1 when you are measuring inside, they have a point on this in the FAQ that it makes it a bit less sensitive.

Thank you so much for this review! For me the decision to go for an X4800H with dirac live full bandwidth. We have a beautiful house but it's all super flat and reflective surfaces. I never had a good spatial sound with my previous Denon with audisy, a to bumpy bass and ( as you discovered) a center that laked clarity and sync with the picture when playing a movie. When listening to music there was a left, a center and a right speaker to determine. Not a well balanced band or concerto playing for you. With Dirac it as if everything is perfect: timing, the bass, the clarity, the accuracy of voices and instrument and the sound is spacious wow. It's as if my I now have a perfect room created just for listening music an watching movies. Yet if yo see it it is all so not right ;-)

Thanks for the review. I am considerung the Denon x4800H for my home theatre and hence I am interested in Dirac Live. Question: If you had to choose only one option for your home theatre: physical accoustic treatment or Dirac Live. Which one would you choose? Tricky question, I know…

    • @MadAudiofficial
      @MadAudiofficial  Рік тому

I think you need both things, physical acoustic treatment suitable under 50 Hz is really expensive and need space, GIK Acoustics for example have this tuned active membrane designed specifically on your mode room issue but are are big and you need a lot of them. At the same time, any digital correction software can do miracles with reverberation time and comb filtering problems, so.. my choice is a light physical acoustic treatment that does impact too much the room design (Vicoustic or GIK are my favourite) and a good correction software like DIRAC 👍🏽

I was waiting for this one :) Because of my untreated room I used REW and a (Mini) DSP for manual correction, however, never got the bass correct. After I got the Dirac Live plugin (full range), everything worked out like magic. Pinpoint accuracy and great punchy bass.

For example, you can calibrate all you want, but when your roomacoustics cancels certain bass frequencies (a null), Dirac or manual DSP can't really compensate for that. Do a search on 'subwoofer crawl' to find the best sub position. Also, there's bass and bass; mid-bass and sub-bass, where mid-bass is usually produced by your speakers self, so a sub won't really help there.
Like MA suggested, REW and an Umik-1 mic can help you measure and find the problem spots in your frequency range. Sometimes positioning your speakers can solve issues, but without measurements it's not that easy.

Technically, the 8015 should exceed the 40 in sound quality, better amp layout, bigger power supply, 11 channels of amplification, 13 channels of processing, etc. I wonder whether the additional cost for the cinema 40 + Dirac would be worth a change from the 8015. Only one so far has given me the spaciousness along with detail that I’m looking for. Just so happens to be one of last years models that doesn’t include Dirac. So this may have pushed me toward the newer model. I do prefer a wide soundstage compared to the narrow more focused imaging though so it’s tough.

I only have two subs, but since Dirac adds phase correction, it was a massive improvement in my bass. I too thought my bass was really good before, but Dirac does a great job of getting both subs and mains all in phase together. Before, I was using MiniDSP to adjust the timing to each sub to get them in better phase, which worked pretty well, but Dirac has done a much better job as it must be adjusting phase not just by speaker, but by the frequency. Without the bass management in Dirac, you simply have to set your own crossover points, but it definitively does adjust multiple subs (at least I know it does 2).

@@Cblan1224 not sure what exactly you are saying I did that Dirac does not recommend, but the results are excellent. One aid of my room is open and there is more space behind that sub, so each sub in my system must be individually adjusted. That being said, I adjust them so they are working together and not canceling each other out. With Audessy, my two subs cancel each other out significantly. With Audessy, I have to use the MiniDSP to adjust the PEQ and timing on ench sub to get them to work together, but with Dirac, it not only did not need any tweaking with the MiniDSP, but it did a better job than I was able to manually do with the MiniDSP. I understand that Dirac might not be compensating for the sub’s volume being combined, but it is easy enough to adjust the sub volume to your taste. The end result with Dirac is that I am getting almost a perfect Harmon Curve at my listening position with my two main speakers and subs.

@Willy Dirac doesn't recommend their "base" product for multiple subwoofers - at least not without the use of something like a miniDSP, or subs that have their own DSP (like SVS).
This doesn't mean you can't use it. And, with two subwoofers, when identical, placed in good locations, and level matched, you may not need any DSP, but since Dirac w/o Bass Control does nothing for multiple subs, its why they do not recommend using it.

Thanks for the video but it's useless.
To begin with, this comparison is not objective or rigorous.
Since it uses Dirac from 20 Hz to 20 Khz, it had to have
Audyssey Multeq-x and not the normal version.
If we look at minute 14:36 roughly, Dirac (green line) rises more vs Audyssey (blue line) at 250 Hz, 550 Hz and at 1.4 Khz without counting the +4.3 db boost in the bass zone.
Above the response of the sub equalized is totally different:
In Audyssey it starts to drop from 50 to 30 Hz and in Dirac it is more linear.
The RT is not solved with equalization, it is necessary to use acoustic treatment.
It would be good if you put the .mdat file to see the measurements on the acoustics of the room,
The little that is seen of the RT is quite unbalanced in frequencies.
    Greetings

Dear Juan, thx for the feedback, that's exactly what we saw in the comparison measures (by the way Audyssey correction is done 20Hz to 20 Khz and was about compare free Audyssey vs Dirac Live). Is look like Dirac live doesn't try to do much correction in the frequency response cause is taking in consideration other parameters also like distortion ecc. So what i saw in the frequency response didn't reflect the subjective test, with a more neutral and clean Tonality when Dirac live was enable.thx for watching

@@MadAudiofficial I already imagine that Audyssey works in the entire frequency range up to 20 Khz as the full Dirac license but I keep saying that this comparison is not objective or rigorous.
You have to compare with Audyssey Multeq-x and have the same frequency response and spl in both calibrations to be able to switch and do a more objective and rigorous test.
Everything that is not that is still a personal opinion, respectable but subjective.

@Juan José dear Juan, this channel is focusing on subjective opinion! I found objective intresting but not relevant in the end since sight and hearing are two different apparatus..

@@MadAudiofficial I am glad to read that you say that this channel focuses on a subjective opinion, so people will know what to expect from one room calibration vs another.
If you are encouraged, you will already make a video with measurements with REW of the acoustics of your room.
Without further ado, greetings from Spain.

@@MadAudiofficial Also MultiEQ-X requires prior knowledge to exploit it fully, with Dirac you take the calibration and usually you just have to tweak a couple of parameters when with Audissey it's time confusing and good knowledge is required to make it sounds close to Dirac. Most of the people out there will definitely not want to loose days tweaking all the parameters. In my room Dirac made a huge improvement, that with Audissey MultEQ-X was achieved after spending days testing all the different settings.

For me personally, I've found even YAPO way better than Audyssey.

Intresting, what do you prefer in YPAO compare it with Audyssey? I know they did some improvements, will test it soon..

You should speak slower with that strong accent! Each word pronounce separately.
