Got 35+ yr old handlebar-having savage internet warriors. "I've been listening to Death for 20 years, so my interweb words mean more and justify arguing over youtube". great cover, obscura added their own unique twist to a classic death track.
I'm 42 and I been listening to Death for 27 years. And I think it's freakin' awesome hearing bands like Obscura doing tribute covers of Death songs.... And they do it freakin' tight and right, yet with just enough of their own awesomeness to just add one more layer of 'zOMFG!!! THIS IS AWESOME' to an already awesome song. Nothing but respect, these guys should do a freakin catalog cover of all Death albums in my opinion.... they're the only ones who have the skills and the respect to do it.
Same here. I've been a Death fan since probably 89-90. This is absolutely Fantastic. Probably the best Death cover I've ever heard. I would guess that Death is a major influence on this band, obviously. I mean besides this cover. Oh shit. You wrote this 9 years ago. oh Well I hope your still alive and all. lol
This is one of the best Death covers I've ever heard. I've been a Death fan since Spiritual Healing and this is fantastic! And to the haters, if I wanted to hear it EXACTLY the way Death did it I can go to iTunes or down to the store and pick up a copy of The Sound of Perseverence. These guys took an amazing (and extremely difficult) song and rocked it. Great job!
You’ve been a fan since “Spiritual Healing” yet don’t own a copy of “The Sound of Perseverance”? Actually, I didn’t buy anything more either after Gene Hoglan departed. Edit: Great version (drumming is tighter than Richard Cristy’s) and I’m pretty sure Obscura’s cover used a fretless bass also.
@@ahsenserhat9270 ‘Human’ , ‘Individual Thought Patterns’ and ‘Symbolic’ are my favourite DEATH albums (I own them all on CD). These three are easily the best of their works imo and contain the best drumming in their catalogue too. The fact that Sean Reinert recorded his drum tracks for ’Human’ at only 19yrs of age is phenomenal.
It's a fretless, that's why it has that "mwah" to it. The producer kind of fucked up the mix by boosting the bass guitar's high mid frequencies a little bit too much. I want to remaster this with a high-mid notch but then it'd probably require other things to be done with the mix and I don't want the mwah to be lessened in turn for guitar heaviness or something. I'd probably boost bass and low-mid frequencies and notch high-mid.
Fretless bass sounds freaking awesome here! Steve DiGiorgio should have played on SOP as well as on Symbolic. Both those albums have so much inferior original bass lines compared to those from Human/ITP era.
The best respect anyone could ever give Chuck and the rest of Death, is covering a classic and being a tribute to the mastermind who originated the song. Very much respect for Obscura and long live Chuck.
So I had completely forgotten that Christy was in Death and went to go check the Metal Archives to see if he was on any other albums... I then discovered that Gene Hoglan was on a few albums... holy shit. I had no idea! Thank you for unconsciously leading me to this little nugget of information.
Haven't listened to this in a while. Time to leave another comment, every two years I seem to delete my old one and leave another. To the wannabe elitists: Steffen is, 99% chance, a bigger Death and Chuck fan than you, so before you start talking shit, think about it.
This was one of the first songs I learned how to sing and play at the same time. I sucked at the solo though. This kicks ass. Death songs are supreme and need recognition. \m/
Super zagrane, wielki szacunek za podjęcie się tak trudnego tematu jak DEATH. Brakuje mi tu jednak serca, powietrza i jest lekko zbyt syntetycznie. Dziękuję. SUPER :))
This is a real classic, done exceedingly well. This does justice to Death and Chuck, and manages to add a few new twists. My only complaint is that they could have (should have) taken a few more liberties and made it their own. Other than that, I'm impressed!
Holy hell... this is a VERY accurate cover. The vocals are off but the tone of all instruments sounds nearly identical. The drumming is spot on and the bass is great. Obscura... you guys are great. This is one of those songs that shouldn't be altered much, if at all.
PEOPLE, TRIGGERS DO NOT MAKE YOU PLAY FASTER IT IS ONLY A LIVE AND OR STUDIO MIXING PROGRAM TO MAKE YOUR DOUBLE KICKS LOUDER IN THE MIX NOTHING MORE. thank you.
My teacher at the time taught me this and made me play it. I told him I liked At the Gates and he was like, oh yeah? Check this out (not in a mean way though, he transcribed Blinded By Fear for me by ear when I was a kid and that’s how I learned it). Many years later I was talking to my other teacher about how I was a die hard Obscura fan. Now I’m here after writing the original comment 12 years ago lol, still a massive tech death nerd. Christian is still my favorite player even now. Obscura just needs Hannes back now.
I like this, and yes, im a huge Death fan. If you guys are arguing about the drums, why? The drummer loved Death enough to do his best on a cover, can`t beat that, can you?
Richard Christy is unreachable...as well as God Chuck...but a good tribute to remember a band that has given feelings and emotions to its fans and not only....
@witheringstonez they use very raw production to get the true sound of their instruments. if you read any articles about omnivium you would've read that they recorded with exactly the same gear they use live.
Badass music, great cover. I just hope nobody yells at me in the comments because I'm not arguing about invisible genies that live in the sky. C'mon people.
Chuck would be proud.

So You're fucking right !!!!!
youre right but it can be better the original :-)
Yes that's right xd

I agree with you dude!
This is not a competition it's a tribute.
Both are great bands.
well, good taste for Pain Akatsuki listening to death metal .. lol
no one said it was a competition
Little quicker. Different vocals. Very nice cover by a very talented band. Death was one of my favs
Obviously
Little....hehe...individual though pattern bass style I love this cover me!!!
It's the same speed as they played it live in 1998 Eindhoven.

Obacura is too good at covering things including songs and my depression
Flawless cover. But Death is the only way. Chuck, you are missed, brother!
2:03 Dat bass, I wish that was in the original song too
I always play it like that and forgot I picked it up from this cover until just now 😅

It had me laughing when I harde it forst
One of my favorite bands covering one of my favorite songs from my favorite band.
Chuck Shuldiner had a unique voice, but this cover is nice, thanks for reviving a legend of Metal, Lives forever CHUCK!! Lives forever DEATH!!
Great tribute, I listen to Death every other day, different albums including Control Denied.
God damn it, I always mix up Obscura and Gorguts.
I do that too sometimes lol
+Andoeriz Obscura is the best Gorguts album
+Spacesonia Your covers are AWESOME!
jesper nobbe thanks!

Steve would have, but the timing didn't work out.
He did play on demos for both.
Best death metal after death !
Falz Uehara Death is not no.1 death metal band XD
To him it is
sound of perseverance will give chills to all generations of metalheads till the world ends... thats a fact
Panagiotis Vermingod Im a prove of that. TSOP still makes me feel great like the first time i Listened up.

The production is nailed , and the cover is just too perfect , a job well done.

Sean Reinert too. Death had some absolutely amazing musicians
Great cover of a great song from a great band by a great band
Excellent mix on the drums. I can hear it all. Love it.
Yup. Great cover.

it’s just like if Steve Di Giorgio was in the Sound of Perseverance album
All the great musicians get taken way before their time. All I know is heavens gonna have some great metal bands! RIP Chuck
Cliff burton on bass , nick menza on drums , chuck on guitar and vocals

Band of the dead

a better lead player than dime imo

Holy shit, they did this cover TOO well
Death led me to Obscura and here i toke full circle...Ojibway approved!
One of the best covers i have ever heard in my life.
I thank you Obscura for showing such dignity and grace with this cover RIP Chuck and HAILZ \m/
Great cover! Liked it a lot.

I really respect Obscura... Their original stuff is absolutely rocking and their covers are always pretty fucking nifty. Good stage presence, too.
Extremely good cover, the guitar tone is almost identical. You did Chuck proud.

But Decrepit Birth usually plays Crystal Mountain, when i saw them live, they played that which was pretty epic
Very good cover.
Awesome cover, but am i the only one who think that the snare dont fit it ?
+Janxa54 Truly, only Gene Hoglan can play this properly.
+Matthew Force Dude Richard Christy played on the record not Hoglan, although he's awesome himself
op34100 Thus my point. Only Hoglan can play it properly. This drummer misses the little intricate things that makes Gene's version more difficult.
+Matthew Force Gene Hoglan did never play that song, Richard Christy was Death's drummer when they recorded The Sound of Perseverance ;)
