    I have done this swap on two V8 ZJ's and on a I6 WJ. Both 96 Zj's had the binding 249 issue so I swapped in a 242 out of a XJ and I6 ZJ. The shifter worked fine just needed the linkage adjusted. You do need to use the shift plate that the linkage attaches to from the 249. The only parts that I needed to do the swap was the case and 242 shifter bezel. There are a pair of plugs that need swapping behind the evic to make the display work if equipped with evic. The 99WJ I6 247 to 242 swap needed a rear drive shaft, 242 shifter assembly, wiring harness to get the dash light to work.

      How hard was that swap? I know of people swapping 249's and 247's for 242's, but I've never seen a 242 swap into a Wrangler. I assume you'd need different drive shafts but should bolt right up?

    My 97 XJ came with the np242 and I also had the issues you described with it not wanting to shift back and forth between 2wd and 4x4 part time, I adjusted the linkage a few times and it still did the same thing, I found that backing up a few feet helps. I swapped an np231 in and I couldn't be happier, it shifts between 2wd and 4x4 like it should, and I never really used the full time option on the 242 so it was no big loss.

    I have a 2000 WJ Laredo with the 4.7 (I know) and was able to locate the one 242HD in Washington State at a junkyard 200 miles away. The 247 is still sitting on the shelf as a backup, but boy is that 2wd with Varilocks nice! You are right tho, different length front/rear driveshafts are needed. *Side note* If you use a 242 from a 4.0, the input/output shafts have different spline counts than the V8. Now my Jeep is even more of a Frankenstein than when I got it.

    Just one thing, my Jeep has the NP242 and it is the best transfer case ever! I finally found an SYE that I can put in it. I also have the problem that it gets stuck in Part-Time sometimes. That is supposed to happen. The way I solved this is by shifting (if I can) while going 15 MPH while in neutral. And it usually goes right into 2WD from Full-Time. And if it doesn’t then I take the shifter and put it in Part-Time because it is stuck there, then I put it in drive and hit the gas just a tad bit. Then I shift it into 2WD and it goes right in. It is all just a matter of lining it all up. Sometimes I park it just perfect that when I put it in neutral, I can shift it from 2WD all the way to Part-Time-Lo and back again over and over again and it is just shifting in and out of them perfectly. Anyway thanks for the video keep up the great work.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 років тому

      Wonder if getting stuck in part time mode has anything to do with not using the 4WD often? I had a heck of a time getting my 98 ZJ into part time and full time when I first got it and come to find out the previous owner never used the 4WD in 150k miles LOL...explained why it was such a pain but since then I've ran it through all 4WD settings and haven't had the problem sense...I had the 4 full time to 4 part time getting stuck in part time issue as well which seems to have gone away with more frequent 4WD usage. I also shift it while I am moving with no throttle application just rolling down the road.

    The standard transfer case for the XJ's was Command Trac, however Selec-Trac was optional.
    My 96 ZJ had the 249 Quadra-Trac, it worked great, had 232k on it and the viscous coupler failed in it making it a part time 4WD at that point, but was amazed where it would go being just full time 4WD.
    My 98 ZJ has selec-trac, and rear limited slip. With it in full time mode the back end wants to go sideways on you, so that may be an issue on your WJ.

    I have 93 xj sport with ax-15 manual transmission and the NP231. My goal is to change over to 242. This is daily driver with only occasional light off road needs, I live in Greater Seattle area, which means dealing with rain, and hear the 242 in full time makes difference for that. We also seem to get snow every other year in more than a few inches + driving into mountains via pass gets heavy snow (231 in part time has handled that like a boss).
    The only catch I’ve heard for dropping 242 from another Xj in is that input shaft needs to swapped from medium to short + have to buy that from shop like Novak because xj with manual never came from factory with 242. Given this is daily driver and not going off-road much, will the regular 242 hold up, or is 242HD better even for this?

I’m running 3.5” rear and 4” front lift, and a Rzeppa front DS like is stock on our WJs would blow up at those angles.

    Well that would be the problem with Progressive-On-Demand NP/NVs and Torque-On-Demand BWs, they send power to front wheels only when there is slippage on back wheels and while its okay for dry climates where roads are mostly dry, and mostly you have to tackle dirt and sand. But in wet climates like rain and snow, it's not exactly well-functioning. The part time and full time doesn't make a much difference, apart from the optional '4wd Auto' mode, but on-demand is quite different.

    The Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Comanche, and Liberty got the option of the Selec-Trac 242 transfer case.
    Command Trac 231 was the standard transfer case in the Cherokee, Comanche, and Liberty...as well as the early Wranglers.
    The Grand Cherokee from 93-98 had the 249 Quadra-Trac transfer case
    The Grand Cherokee from 99-04 had the 247 Quadra-Trac transfer case even if you have Quadra-Drive, that just adds the limited slip front/rear differentials
    The Grand Cherokee standard 4WD system was quadra-trac, the quadra-drive and selec-trac were additional cost optional upgrades. In the 93 and I think 94 Grand Cherokee the Command-Trac was optional as well but I don't recall ever seeing one equipped that way from the factory, everyone went with quadra-trac or selec-trac it seems.

I have a question about the 249 T-Case, I just pulled my case from my 97 ZJ 5.2 and the input shaft is the 23 spline and is 13/16’s of an inch long, it’s pretty short. My question is did the 249 with the short shafts come in the 4.0 in line 6 cylinder engines and will it be ok to install the short shaft behind the v-8. The Jeep did drive before with this short guy in it but I have not driven it much at all and it did lack power but I think that may be due to other issues, I heard no grinding or anything like that, which would lead me to believe it was engaging the gears but I thought I would ask just to be sure, and if you can make sense of this rambling comment then I will have even more faith in your knowledge and trust your answer. I have had jeeps throughout my 58 yrs. I have ran all types of transfer cases. Currently I have a 97 ZJ 318 and 249 tc. When i started with her people said to swap a 242 in there. I planned to. Never got around to it. So i ran with it. I went to Dans drive line here in Vegas a asked him to swap. Why was the answer. I said it wasnt a very stout tc. Then I was schooled. There have been off road racers who have only used that tc. I learned as far as durability it was on par. What was done is the front drive shaft was shit canned and put a custom shaft in there basically with two u joints. I DO NOT ROCK CLIMB. Did not build it for that. Mud snow four x roads. She is a beast. Runs 33s and 4 inch lift. Steering gear box adapted to that. Front and rear sway bars adjustable. I have pulled cjs xjs and various other makes. Yes my dumb ass has been stuck to and been pulled out. All Im saying is to each his own. I have not had any issues with the 249.

    The 247 is an awesome transfer case IF maintained correctly less that 2 spins of differential action between lock up or slip to the other axle, i had 300,000 yes it went off road in it, use the correct fluid in it change it frequently and it is fine it never let me stranded
    could you have been confused with the front axle lock up , i have had all 4 tires spinning on the WJ, when the VariLocks work they are like a locker, the Slip is minimal again IF maintained and using a tire under 32"

  • @Trailer4904

    Please try this. A jeeper told me this years ago and I got it to work in both my Quadra drive 2 WJs. Drop it into 4 low, 1st gear...THEN pull the e-brake up 2 clicks. This puts just enough drag on the all 4 wheels to engage the diff in the transfer case and you essentially have factory lockers. Not sure if that will change you mind about a swap, but might help with plowing the driveway. Thanks for the great content.

    • @rockymountboy
      @rockymountboy 4 роки тому

      I'm not following you on this. If you put the 247 in 4Lo Part-Time, this locks the front to the rear. There is no more "engaging the diff" in the transfer case. It's locked as if there isn't a differential. And lockers would apply to the differentials on the axles, not the differential in the transfer case. Did you mean to put it in 4Hi Full-Time and then partly engage the parking brake to get 4Hi part-Time (locked front-to-rear)?

    Did I or did I not say pretty much exactly this ;) I am doing a 242hd swap soon, this spring in my v8 wj. Found one for 300. My 247 has begun slipping and does not engage the fronts.
    The 247 works for....sand. Mud. But that is really it. Low is the thing for that but the 2.72 reduction and the binding on dry is bleh. It doesn't do what we want.
    Best to do 242hd with truetracs front and rear or locker rear truetrac front.
    I have understood that to handle that shifting problem you said is to put it in reverse and then drive a couple feet and then forward into the right tcase gear.

      @@andrewmarshall777 I do not know what your comfort level with working on your Jeep is, but there could be a number of other issues causing your power steering to leak without it being the box that needs replacing. First, those Jeep have extra power steering lines as the fan is run off the power steering pump, so it could be just a line that is leaking (that is WAY more common than the box leaking), and even if it is the box, it is just a seal in the box. It is probably the main seal where the pitman arm attaches and that could be replaced if you wanted to. BleepinJeep has a video on it. Lastly, you could get a steering box that isnt leaking from a Junk yard for liek $50 and swap it yourself in a few hours. Just some other options which cost less than $600
