    Another 242HD option would be the Dodge Durango's from the 90's up to I believe 2001. I really wish I could have pulled the one on the 98 Durango I found about a month ago but didn't have the money.

    Silver blade 1's are the shit. And this is kinda surprising as I've been looking for a 242HD for years at the pull yard and last month I finally got ahold of one. They are quite scarce in Colorado.

    Easy on the WJ rims there all fuggly mall crawler wheels sorry. I also hate the chrome rims. The ones you looked at are stock chromed plastic covers hard to get off but worth it. I agree with most that under the chrome those are the best wheel. I also dig the stock steel XJ wheels. I have those with 34’s on my XJ funny everyone comments on them. You guys must have wool socks on you junk to be out there even thinking about a T case. Have fun!!! Thanks for another good vid.

    I know this is old, but in case, you can pull a 242D from same model year V8 Durangos and they are the same as the 242HD for the WJ, but the input shaft is shorter for the V8 WJ and would need to swap, but a direct swap for the 4.0 242J as it comes out of a 46re I believe which is a beefier version of the 42re on the 4.0, and side note I am looking to see and interested if I can swap a 46re into my WJ as well

I'm looking for a cherry pair of late model XJ seats for my WJ. The stock buckets in the WJ pinch the nerves in my hip on long trips and the doorside bolsters are starting to collapse. The seats in my 2000 XJ are perfect for me. Someday I'd like to meet you guys in a yard somewhere. I'm not driving to Jersey! Been there enough already.

      WJ are newer and IMO more comfortable. They fixed a lot of issues on the WJ which the ZJ had like beefing up the front suspension and steering. The ZJ shares parts with the TJ and XJ though so they can be easier to find parts for and there is arguably more aftermarket support for the ZJ. The pros and cons lists are so similar that is comes down preference.

    Been meaning to post here for a while. Sorry it didn't work out for you.
    As far as these not being rare, I would argue that they are. Based on my experience in the yards. Maybe you think I'm full of it but hear me out. I've been watching local yards here in both Utica and Rome for over 3 years now since the WJs really started rolling in, at least once a week walking through and seeing what's new. Let's estimate that there was just one new WJ every week. This is low - there certainly have been weeks where there were 3 or more just at Vinces alone, then there's Rubicon. 3 years, at one WJ a week, puts us at 156.
    In that time I have seen FOUR WJs with both the 242 and the 4.7l V8. I am positive of this - I remember all of them. One of them wasn't even local - I drove out to the Auburn Pick-n-Pull for the first one I bought. I chased it out there after it was incoming overflow at Rubicon and they told me it had been sent out there. These have always had the long aluminum tailshaft housing and the 1330 front U-joint in the driveshaft as you correctly observed. On 3 of the 4 I pulled the case, the first because I had a home for it and the other two to save them from the crusher as their time was getting close. The fourth one had a cracked case, possibly from the gorilla driving the loader that put it there. I bought a 4th one from a craigslist partout down in NJ where I happened to spot a selec-trac shifter picture and the listing said it had a V8.
    Now, my math tells me, that with what I am positive is a very low estimate of the WJs I've looked at in the yards, that 4 out of 156 is about 2.5%. That's rare. Like, literally it's been one or two a year that I've seen in multiple decent sized yards. And I've watched close - it's a bit of a hobby to find some of the things like this on WJs that don't show up very often - Overland stuff, auto-dim side mirrors that the crap hasn't run out of yet, etc.
    If you can find a heavy duty 242, it's worth grabbing IMO, even if it needs a rebuild. I will save this one before it gets crushed if nobody else does.

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  5 років тому +1

      I respect what you do man. There are shockingly few who even recognize the 242HD and far less who would take the time to pull one. Obviously I will not argue with your experience as that is your experience - and I will admit this is the first 242HD I have see in and Upstate yard. I have had some better lunch in the yards in NJ and PA. I would estimate I see one ever 6-12 months. That said, about just between you and me... The weather played a role in my decision to leave that case. Yes it seemed a little beat up, but also it was 20 degree with fresh snow under the Jeep. No excuse, I know, but on that day all signs pointed to "leave it". I hope you do go grab the case or someone else. I hate the idea of a 242HD getting crushed.

    • @gatesj777
      @gatesj777 5 років тому +1

      @@DEInTheGarage That's interesting - the idea that it varies by area - I would have expected that out here in the sticks you'd see more of these, and more of the automagical soccer mom type 247's closer to civilization where you are!
      Don't blame you about the cold, I remember that day, it was wretched. I actually got pretty good at pulling them, a WJ spare tire cover to lay on, a wheel off of something to go under the TC so it doesn't fall far. My smaller impact driver usually is sufficient to get the driveshafts out. Unbolt or sawzall if necessary the crossmember so the TC drops and buzz the rear mount off with an impact, then the 14mm nuts are all accessible to get the case off of the back of the trans. I always grab that wiring extension so I can hook up the part time indicator - the trans harness has a place to plug it in even on 247 WJs, it just has a throwaway plug in it. It can be done in about 20 minutes if you work fast, not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be the first time.
      Yes, the interior of that particular Jeep was vomit inducing. Some people live like animals and I do not understand how. I do have to make a correction - this is actually the 5th 242HD WJ I've seen, throws off my numbers slightly I guess....

    Timberline. First rim, best rim, from the days when they still wanted to impress people. Look awesome blacked out.
    And sienna pearl tint. (The maroon from 99-01 I think.) Bestest cullah!

      I have timberlines on the 2000 and my 2001 is Sierra.. I have been wondering if the Timberlines would look good on my 2001. i plan to black out the bottom half of that jeep including the rims and then nick name it "black Cherry". You think the Timberlines would look good in that configuration?

      @@DEInTheGarage mine IS in that configuration! I have a 99 Laredo with blacked out grill and rims, though it is time to repaint the cladding. No idea how to send you a pic.

      @@DEInTheGarage I just went outside to take a pic. Seems this will be the year of WJ. Man, that thing is lookin' rough right now! I need to find someone local who can weld in patches for the rust spots...I had a hole open up in the left rear this winter. It was just starting last fall...or so I thought. I thought I had time.
      Maybe buy the replacement fenders and cut patches out of it.
      Everyone and their brother has done a rust video, but nobody local haha!
