1999 JEEP WJ: NP247 to NP242 AMG Transfer Case Swap Part 1 [4K]

- If I can do it, you can do it. Lots of learning and discovery, here. I show my mistakes and successful techniques, so nothing is left to guess at. The camera captured everything.
Disclaimer: I'm not a licenses mechanic, but I do know how to follow directions. I won't always use the correct terminology or the right tools for the job. I'm just a veteran who needs to be in the boonies. The past couple months have been extremely claustrophobic since the Jeep WJ went down.

Ladies and Germs... Upon rewatching this episode, I don't even know how I did all this on my own. LOL...! Thanks for stopping by the TSF Channel. I appreciate you...!
I have had that experience LOL I had a 1989 Cherokee 5 speed, I don’t recall what transfer case but I cracked it all the way around. It also had over 200,000.
I did the 247 to 242HD swap last year, and haven't looked back. Having a 242 with vari-lok diffs is a great combination.
It really is!
Where u guys find the rear shaft
Did you have AWD? Like with the Limited?
Did the same to mine . I agree, great combination !
Did the same to mine . I agree, great combination !
I got lucky and found an 03 with a 4.7 and Selectrak with the 242HD stock. Got the rear driveshaft also. Swapped right into my 04 4.7 that had the 247, my progressive coupler went south. Left the Varilok in the rear axle and put a TruTrac in the front, with a 3" lift and 32's it goes pretty much anywhere.
Pretty much! I love the 242, even in snow!
How many splines on the input side of the np247 j with 4.7 v8 my chain is jumping teeth in 4 low with pressure ie climbing
@@schiedler1978 I want to say 26 from memory. The thing is the ONLY 242 that will be a bolt on to the transmission is the 242HD (sometimes marked as 242J) from a GC that had the 4.7 and Selectrak. It is not only the spline count but the length of the input shaft on the T/Case, that is also different than the 242 that comes with the 4.0 engine.
how is the center diff on this thing with say goofing off in a snowy field or parking lot ? how is it with normal snow driving . i have an amg 242 and a np120 im tyring to figure out which one to use for my project and the i hear the center diff on the 242 amg is an open difff which worries me on snow streets like if half the truck is on ice and the other half isnt on a stop
My biggest takeaway when I chose the AMG was that there was NO 2WD option. Check these links for more info: ua-cam.com/video/Vir6wFRKPB0/v-deo.htmlsi=HYu9ecB-lfaoqg_X and naxja.org/threads/np242-transfer-case-tech.1138623/
@TheTSFChannel that didn't answer any of my questions at all and BTW you can rebuild that and include a 242 jeep selector shaft and get 2wd . I want to know about how the center differential acts and how it feels on snowy roads and off Road

Is 242 better for snow road driving? I have the 231j. I’ve looked at the forums but would like your input. I found one for a 100
I won't know til this winter. I know that 247 was crap in snow, transfering power to the wheel with least resistance. I'll be very interested to see how high-lock and low-lock work in snow.
I've been on powder and ice recently, and the High-lock and Low-lock ranges on this transfer case make it VERY capable -- and without chains!
The main reason why I went with it was for snow driving. The biggest advantage for me is the 4wd full time position allows me to leave in 4wd while highway driving in winter. Here in Michigan it is common to be going down a perfectly clear and dry highway and instantly encounter snow covered pavement in the shadows of the trees, shifting back and forth between 4wd part time and 2wd is just not feasible. As far as the 247 being crap in snow I disagree. The power transfer is based on different speeds of the input and output shafts in relation to each other, not on torque bias. It progressively adds more power to the front output shaft based on the severity of the speed difference of the two.
Is your Jeep full time AWD(Quadratrac II) or Selectrac(2WD/4WD LOW/ HIGH)?
There's no 2W drive
I've got a 242 on a grand Cherokee with the 4.0 is there a difference in the HD 242
Check this article out:

Yes, big difference. The input shaft is different, the output shaft is different and the chain and sprockets inside are different, 1.25" wide vs 1.00" wide on the 4.0 version.
The lense it's there for 3 D😂😂
What shaft you put or where u find it
Did you watch part 3? ua-cam.com/video/JUIQ971TWJk/v-deo.html
Where did you get the 242hd from?
An ebay listing led me to a junkyard of sorts who rebuild transmissions and transfer cases. I had to call them for some reason. Anyway, they sold me the 242HD which wasn't the listing I responded to, but sounded better to me. They're local to me in SoCal and for the life of me, I can't find their info anymore. Sorry
Scour these comments through this series. I may have posted their phone number.
Found it! www.ebay.com/str/transmart4x4transmissions
what is the difference between a 242J and 242WJ ?
I've linked another article on this thread somewhere, but here's another: www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310/any-difference-np242j-vs-np242wj-2870777/
Will it fit on wj crd 2.7?
You'll want to surf the forums for answers. With a Mercedes engine, I'm thinking Mercedes transmission, which would tell me, Mercedes transfer case -- But I have no idea. Study through this site: www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140499
and especially, this thread. www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140297
There's a hyper link to the Jeep WJ/WG maintenance manuals here: colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/WJ/2002_WJ:WG_Diesel/
Hopefully you can research what you need.
How's the research going?
I have a 2.7 and thinking of a 242 t-case swap
