    This is so cool! I'm a little bit torn because I live in Long Island City and I've been looking for a 242 that's convenient for me to get to (read: don't have to drive upstate or into Jersey for), but if I'd have paid enough attention to know that Dan had one and offered him some money for it, this mash up wouldn't have happened! Plus I guess swapping transfer cases while being parked on a side street in Queens doesn't sound particularly fun... so I think I'm okay with the outcome haha. Keep up the good work all of you guys! Ok so i'm just getting into the off-roading world and i'm interested in building a WJ. I live in Phoenix so i'll be doing more rock crawling than mudding. I've found a 2004 Grand Cherokee that i'm going to look at. it has the 4.0 which i want. Is there anything in particular that i should look at when i go to see the vehicle that you guys can give me a heads up on. truck looks really clean but ya never know.

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  4 роки тому +1

      Just look for oil leaks on the motor. most 4.0s have a few, but you want to know about it before you buy. especially the rear main seal (between the engine and transmission). If the bottom of the motor is soaked or something you may want to dig in further and make sure it was never run dry of oil. I assume as you are in AZ rust will not be an issue like it is up here, but make sure the cooling system looks good. if you are going to be rock crawling in the desert, any issues with the cooling system will quickly become a MAJOR issue. look for leaks and check to see if it looks like the water pump has ever been replaced. Side note: I would suggest installing a transmission cooler if the Jeep does not have on already. I have a video on and easy install method if you are interested. The 42RE transmission behind the 2004 4.0L does NOT like to be hot and will give you issues if overheated.

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  3 роки тому +1

      Yea bud. Check the forums. The cases on the one made for all Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep are the same. All they change as in the inside parts and input shafts usually. The only other thing that SOMETIMES needs to be changed over is the output shaft cover plate. Some output shafts as a different diameter, but all the plates have the same mounting points. I have personally seen a 231HD taken from a dodge pickup and in an afternoon had the output shaft swapped and put into a Jeep cherokee

    • @DEInTheGarage

    So ypu talked about all these different t cases... But what about a 272 in a 2000 laredo? This is what I believe is in mine... Not sure if I'm looking at the right tags or etchings, but the small circle tab with the red outline is saying 272... So what is that and or, how do I find out what I have in mine?

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  4 роки тому +2

      That is the gear ratio, not the case ID. Look at the top of the tag where it says “model”

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  4 роки тому +1

      Your 2000 Laredo likely has the 242, though there is a small chance it has a 247

    • @gcanaday1
      @gcanaday1 4 роки тому +3

      If it's a quadra-anything in a 2000, it's 247.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 4 роки тому +1

      2.72 is the low range ratio. Your 2000 Laredo either has the 242 (Selec-Trac) if you have 2WD, part time, full time, neutral, and low range on the shifter, or it has the 247 (Quadra-Trac, or Quadra-Drive) if it has the All time 4WD, Neutral, and Low Range. The only difference between quadra-trac and quadra-drive is with quadra-drive it gave you the limited slip front and rear axles, after the WJ's production ended in 2004 starting in 2005 the Quadra-Drive WK's only had a limited slip rear axle.

    I dont want awd in my zj. What transfer case can i swap in directly

    • @KJsProjects
      @KJsProjects 4 роки тому +1

      Depends on the year of your ZJ. If you google ZJ transfer case swap, there is a list that will tell you your input shaft length. I have a 97 ZJ with the 249 (AWD) and I got a 231 out of a 97 XJ. It bolted right up with no modification.

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  4 роки тому +3

      A direct swap for AWD (technically not AWD, but "full-time 4wd"... just semantics) would be a 249, but they are not very reliable. I would suggest getting a 247 from a WJ as the limited slip progressive coupler they use is much stronger. You would have to switch the input shaft on the new case to use the one from your stock case. I have a video coming out on how to do that within a few weeks. It is not hard

    • @KJsProjects
      @KJsProjects 4 роки тому +4

      @@DEInTheGarage I read his comment as I have AWD and want a selectable transfer case 242/231.
      The 249 is a strong case. The issue is the viscous coupler goes bad and then it is as expensive or more expensive to replace the VC rather than swap the transfer case. For instance, I spent $100 on a 231 verses $400-800 for a new VC.

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  4 роки тому +1

      Whoops. Sorry guys, I read that too fast I guess. What Kyle said is correct

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 4 роки тому +1

      If you don't want full time 4WD, the 231 is a part time only transfer case that'll swap in and it gives you 2WD, 4WD high part time, neutral, and a 2.72:1 low range. The other common option is the 242 which is a 231 transfer case with a full time 4WD mode added, otherwise the rest of it is the same, just adds an open differential full time 4WD mode which still gives you 2WD, 4WD high part time, adds the 4WD high full time, neutral, and the same 2.72:1 low range. I have the latter in my 98 ZJ, love it in the winter, throw it in full time 4WD and forget about it the rest of the winter if you want.
      My previous 96 ZJ had the quadra-trac 249 transfer case and after 219k miles the viscous coupler failed leaving me with a full time 4WD system that acted like part time 4WD when trying to turn sharp...I drove it for a couple more years and sold it with 232k on it and the current owner is still driving it after replacing the transfer case...the viscous coupler is about $400-600 and then the labor of having it replaced if you don't do it yourself is pretty bad, as in you may as well buy a replacement transfer case at that point.
      The only downfall to the 247 transfer case and I think the 245 is the same way is the progressive coupler only applies power to the front axle when the rear axle starts spinning faster than the front, so you have to lose traction before you gain any traction, and in what Doug and Eric found out with the WJ is when you are trying to get around easily without spinning tires to get traction you just don't have any actual 4WD. The quadra-drive sounded like a great idea in those but in the end its really not much help if you gotta lose traction before the front end gets any power.
      I really can't complain with the 249 transfer case that was in my 96 ZJ, that Jeep was offroad in the mud, snow, sand, rocks, etc. far more than it was ever on the highway, and to manage to get over 200k on it before the viscous coupler failed was great I think, many report that those viscous couplers seem to fail around the 150k mark.

      @@DEInTheGarage It should be fine, the 242 was used in a few WJ's behind the 4.7L V8 and they didn't have any issues....rarely you would find a 242 behind a 5.2L V8 in a ZJ, I've only seen a couple factory 5.2L V8's with 242's though, so must have been quite rare and I don't think it was ever a factory option in the 98 5.9L Limited V8's.

    • @gcanaday1
      @gcanaday1 4 роки тому +1

      @@wildbill23c I hope he doesn't have any issues; I think the chain/sprocket width and the input shaft are the main differences. Neither should be that big a deal, but they did not put the 242J in the V8. It was the beefier version. If he wanted to ditch the 2wd, he could have dug underneath Durangos I think for the heavier one also.
      Unless I am mistaken, if it begins to go bad the first thing he'll notice is the chain slipping. I hope it is a resounding success, tbh - it would make dropping one in mine half the cost.

      @@DEInTheGarage There is a 242 dodge version, it has no 2wd (do we really need it? The mileage ain't much different between 2wd and full time) but the cool thing is that it has a 6-gear planetary rather than the 3-gear you get in the jeep one. I have been thinking about that but haven't tried to look for one yet. I have no idea about the input shaft or the linkage.
      Edit: come to think of it, they got the same transmission, so the shaft should be right..shouldn't it?
