Love it. Awesome video thanks. I was out that day too. Great to see you catch and release the Kahawai and treat them with the respect they deserve. Cheers!
Hey man I remember meeting you at the mak last year around this time and you told me to look you up on UA-cam been following you ever since love your content
great video, hoping to get that license and head out over the next few weeks, is it best a couple of hours before high tide? cought a great one at Kaikoura last week , great fun on a tiny spinning reel
Hey thanks for the comment, I would fish the high tide down to low for your best chance at a kahawai. The Kahawai are certainly great fun on light tackle alright. Have fun.
We would catch hundreds of those at the Waimak river mouth as kids, back in the early 1960's when we stayed at our bach there. Used to just leave them on the sand and I can remember once, some asian dude asking if he could have some.....first time I'd heard of people eating them back then.
@@canterburyfishingadventures by looking at the break point seems to be the braid..or around the fluro to braid knot..I’ve learnt the Albright knot so I’ll try that
Yeah it is more fun and yep I've fished with light gear many times for Kahawai. The only problem with light gear at the Mak is there are far roo many people and it's harder to play the fish with that many people close by.
Yes, we love eating Kahawai. You can only eat so much of it. We prefer to catch and release or give it away to people who want a fish. Thanks for the comment.

Hey Soul Adventures. We certainly love targeting Kahawai with lures and even soft baits. Thanks for the comment.

Nice! great action
Hi Steve, Thanks for your comment.
I just had a great Kahawai session at North Rakaia mouth. So much fun too catch 😀
Hey, great to hear. Kahawai are an excellent fighting fish and should be classed as a sportsfish. Keep on fishing 🎣

Nice 😊 👌👌🤙
Thanks again for your comment Leonard.
Hi Can you introduce your fishing gear? seems very simple and works well
It is, I will be doing a video on that at some stage.
We would catch hundreds of those at the Waimak river mouth as kids, back in the early 1960's when we stayed at our bach there. Used to just leave them on the sand and I can remember once, some asian dude asking if he could have some.....first time I'd heard of people eating them back then.
They are a very good fighting fish and a lot of people dont like to eat them because they dont know how to cook them properly.
What pound braid n leader? I had my 20lb braid snap twice this morning think my knots r shit lol
Hey, I have 20lb braid for main line and also for leader. Where exactly did it break? On the main to leader knot or directly on the braid?
@@canterburyfishingadventures by looking at the break point seems to be the braid..or around the fluro to braid knot..I’ve learnt the Albright knot so I’ll try that
@@lbrownnz2156 ok, give that a shot. Just make sure it is tied correctly or you will end up with the same result.
@@canterburyfishingadventures will do, what’s your go to leader to braid joining knot?
@@lbrownnz2156 I do an Improved Albright knot or an FG Knot. Thanks
My first fish was kawaii I caught it down that river
@@Izzy-t6s good one, they fight well those fish.
Waaaaaay more fun on lighter gear bro, but you would need abit more room lol. Try 6lb braid with a 6lb leader one day 👌👌
Yeah it is more fun and yep I've fished with light gear many times for Kahawai. The only problem with light gear at the Mak is there are far roo many people and it's harder to play the fish with that many people close by.
I was just wondering are you using a single hook hex spinner or treble hook
I only use a single hook. I take the treble hooks off.
Do you not like eating fish? Or just prefer fish that are classed more as a table fish?
Yes, we love eating Kahawai. You can only eat so much of it. We prefer to catch and release or give it away to people who want a fish. Thanks for the comment.
@@canterburyfishingadventures Yeah too right mate. Cheers for the video, keep em up.
@@yooooooooo459 Thanks mate, hope you enjoy them. More to come.
What size hook do you prefer?
Generally a size 2
Which part of waimakariri is this? Can you tell me?
Yep, the answer is in the title.
Keep that reel off the sand it will stuff it mate
Yep, cheers I do realize that. It was a calm day and i quietly placed the rod down on the wet sand.
I don't like catch and release if you're not going to eat them leave them alone.
Thats crazy. Shut up
