I would love to see Oliveira work with Craig in a similar way to how Volk did. I think he really needs that specific style of training to have a better chance at the rematch, but would love to be proven wrong.

Oliviera had an effective defense using his elbow pointed into Daruishs face while in bottom guard. It kept Daruish back and gave some room to move and it protected himself from head strikes.

As daruish got tired with ground and pound he was leaving his arms all over the place

It was interesting to see how much better charles did in the hand fighting defending the ground and pound once daruish had nothing left in his arms
Did you think Dariush was fatigued? To me it just seemed like he was playing safe/conserving energy.

Heartbreaking as it was ultimately for Benny, I actually giggled, when I saw, as you noted, how tired he was from his top position on the mat. His arms flailed more than they're going for Charles head with deadly purpose!
I think he didn't successfully land against Charles any more than the reverse, even from the superior position. As Greg said, it must partly have been Benny's weight cut; he put on quite a bit of muscles the last 2 or so years. Approaching 35 years of age, that's a lot of weight to deal with the last few days of weight cutting.
Charles, as Greg also noted, ALWAYS looked like he's dying during the weight cutting days... so he said he included his entire family to fast with him, for spirtual energy... so he's more used to looking like a haunted skeleton; Benny is NOT!
Usually, Benny LOOKED lackadaisical but he's not tired; he looked & acted exhausted this fight! (But that's not why I picked Charles to win from the outset.)

Charles vs Dustin was my first ufc fight I ever watched. Even then everyone said Dustin would destroy him but I believed in Charles. Charles ended up destroying Poirier and my belief in Charles skyrocketed. My favorite fighter forever.

charles jogged to the scale and was smiling, i dont think he looked terrible.
lack of good sub attempts from full guard aside, I think Benny didn't do great with his ground and pound there. they were really going shot go shot on the bottom and when he tried to posture up was when Charles started working underneath.
I wish you could play video of the fight while breaking it down but I’m sure ufc wouldn’t allow that. Maybe you can break down semi pro fights or whatever you can find that allows you to.

i was so big on beniel's grappling before this fight. i always worried about the standup but i thought it'd be daruish cpontrol vs olive's finishing ability. but its been a long time since ive seen closed guard being so dominant. this shows tht the top 5 relly are levels above at 155. i am hoping beniel is better than his performance though beuase i enjoy his style so much

I thought Gordon invented the high wrist guillotine.
Nate Diaz used to use them all the time. In all fairness he never finished a UFC fight while keeping the overhook on the arm, but he used the actual overhook high wrist position that Gordon and Craig use all the time. He used it against Jim Miller, and against Juniar Assuncao he actually got the tap as he was releasing his overhook arm and before he could connect his hands. And that was way back in 2007 or 2008. Gordon definitely came up with it on his own and popularized them on the modern scene

Greg seems to be not giving too much credit to Islam, but this fight clearly showed the difference between Islam's top control and Benny's. It also showed how Islam's distance management was better than Benny's but that's another story.
