This is actually a great take. Thinking back, Khabib and Islam's dominance against a lot of the current MMA lot has been against dudes training OLD BJJ material. Craig and Danaher are the two biggest coaches you could have in your grappling corner, and anyone that's watched their instructionals would tell you why. They teach shit well and they do it fast.

R1: Volk started strong, but Islam struck him down to one knee, got a takedown and controlled him.

R2: Islam slips on edge of canvas, secures takedown. Volk resists. Great striking by both; Islam connects stronger but Volk marginally better due to higher output.
(MARGINALLY VOLK).
R3: great striking exchange, Islam does more damage overall. Islam gets Volk to ground. Volks leg trips up Islam.
(MARGINALLY ISLAM).
R4: Islam connects stronger and cleaner. Secures takedown. Controls rest of round.
(CLEAR ISLAM).
R5: great jab and knees by Islam. Volk also connects, but not as strong. Takedown by Islam. Volk resists. Islam better for first 3.5 minutes. Volk connects well as Islam shoots, Islam on his back. Volk wins final 1.5 minutes.

The judges saw Islam's ability to lay on Volk as win. But the system outdated. It should be, the man who thrives emerges victorious. Not the one who barely survives.

oh wow a breakdown from a guy who never even fought *in MMA* lol. Quite frankly the only reason BJJ looked so "good" in this fight (as in so good at surviving lol) is because it's Volk--but Craig is not Volk and every BJJ specialist in MMA is not Volk. When Craig actually ends up training fighters to submit Dagestani guys *in MMA* consistently, then he can start talking more. We already see what happened very early on in the MMA careers of Kron and Garry, all Craig does is talk shit about how Dagestani wrestling isn't that good by looking at in an MMA context, which he has never fought in and we have no reason to assume he'd even be good at it until he proves it.
*Islam won, Alexander lost. Get over it! Judges are always against fighters from Russia and Dagestan, and still they weren't able to give it to Volkanovski. 1 last minute of the fight does not equal 25 minutes of the fight, casuals...*
I’ve never seen a man get sucked off so much for losing except for Conor. Story of Islam’s career, he has a competitive fight against the PFP number 1 and takes his 12 fight win streak and still can’t get his respect from the mma casuals. He might not be able to win over the casuals but at least he can win fights.

I think Islam is not being given enough credit. He took this fight to Australia 4 months after getting the belt and against someone who has nothing to lose and everything to gain and also against someone whose featherweight king. As for sambo vs jiu jitsu comparison what saved Volk was his strength due to the rugby background. Islam's team might have underestimated that.

You still need to mount offense vs Islams mount time; which Volk did in the last few minutes. But Islam did take Volks wrestling too lightly and he will be better suited for next time. So I don’t think hand fighting and sitting in his body lock will win you rounds. And surprisingly Islam did well striking in most rounds except the last. I think it will be risky to mount Islam in the early rounds but hey we’ll see. I was wrong about Volks wrestling ability.

I think everyone including Craig is forgetting that Islam is fairly new to the scene. This was the first time he was defending his belt. As oppose to Alex who has been around for a while and has defended his belt many times against tough opponents. So experience wise Alex is way ahead of Islam. But Islam showed lot of character to go against a machine in Alex. A rematch is definitely on the cards but after they take care of business in their own weight classes.
Islam has been longer and has more fights in the UFC than Volk, he's well experienced. The only thing stopping him from pursuing the belt before was probably Khabib. Other than that Volk has more title fights but that's it.

Craig, about round 4. Does striking damage from bottom trump "effective grappling" if the person in dominant position isnt inflicting damage or submission? Volk was in the less dominant position but was inflicting damage, so is that not more "effective" in a sense since Mackachev was the one actively being hit in the head?
Is it really a dominant position if you are on bottom carrying Volk's weight, getting hit in the head, and never remotely getting close to threatening a sub. At a certain point the bottom player is only holding onto the position in a defensive manner to prevent a standup, even if it normally a "dominant" position.

Volk was smiling yet Islam had his back while taken down. That sums up the fight for me. In a sense we see a defiant Volk smiling, bloody and nodding to the crowd. We thought the fight would be a domination due to size and strength, yet it was close. However, in no way did Volk win that fight. Islam won rounds 1,2,4 for sure !!

He comes back to LW and loses to Makachev now back to FW to be a WEIGHT BULLY. Volk fans trying to erase the history that this is a guy who has cut down to FW from Light Heavyweight to be a weight bully. He can't avenge his losses at Welter and he has run from that division. Makachev lost at LW and then came back and cleared the division. When will Volk clear the Welterweight division?

It's such bullshit to challenge another Volk in your own weight. If you're gonna challenge Volk, you should go down to Volk's own weight.
People really need to read the Scoring Criteria. The fact that people think that Time Control is one of the main criteria is bizarre. A fight it's scored by Plan A (Effectiveness) and if that shows a tie then, Plan B (Agressiveness) and if that also fails then Plan C (Control Management).
Holding position for 3 minutes without adding damage or submission attempts while being hit isn't Effective Grappling. That's holding position while your opponent shows Plans A and Plan B.
The fourth round shouldn't have been score for Islam.
Those were the same judges from O'Malley vs Petr and Ankalaev vs Jan. They got chewed up by the media for not valuing the Grappling exchanges in those fights and ended up overcompensating in this one.

Normally I'd want to watch a video like this simply because Craig Jones is an elite level practitioner who also has the rare ability to explain and teach, rather than just perform. Having experienced a decade plus in academia, along with working along side teachers/professors, research scientists, and clinical practitioners, while also having worn each of those hats myself in varying degrees, I am painfully aware that just because you are good at doing something it doesn't mean a damn thing when it comes to being able to teach it to others. Craig can both perform and teach at the absolute highest of levels.
