    Of the three blue note 80 . Two I had to return due to vinyl defects dips in the vinyl lead in tracks. One was a mess multiple things. Looks like it was dropped on the floor. What is interesting is when I got replacement copies the inner sleeves were plastic lined unlike the paper. The most recent was Basra lp. That wasn’t too bad but Ethiopian nights was a mess. All the tone poet were perfect. Thanks for the video Ken. Keep it up

    Another informative video. Great call on Idris, just picked up OG copy of Idris’s Power of Soul.Jazz Sheperd latest on Miles/BB. He says no groove , I hear double bass line , rhythm section is like a pulse. Each to his own.
    Thanks for sharing

    Nice review. Btw, Optimal pressing plant is KILLING the guys over at RTI. All my Tone Poets are warped or off center. All my 80th anniversary discs are perfect.

    Yeah man, those 80th series Blue Notes are killer. To me they sound just a solid as the Tone Poet series, they just don't have the gatefold sleeves (some of the Tone Poet's don't either). I can HIGHLY recommend that Kenny Dorham "Una Mas" LP. That LP not only sounds great, but has some fantastic work by Kenny and the "gang". (The "gang" being Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, the incredible Tony Williams and Butch Warren....."not too shabby"). The Latin rhythms that you hear on a lot of Dorham records really sets a great feel for this LP. I couldn't agree with you more Ken, it's a "must have". Great video Ken.....as usual. Cheers! 👽🖖"Na-nu"
    Oh yeah, something I heard Joe Harley say about those old LPs that had a Stereo and Mono version, was that to save money they were all recorded in Stereo and to create the Mono version, they just folded the tape...."or something like that". Have you ever heard of that before?

    You said there was soul jazz and funky stuff happening in the early 60’s, and I’m beyond curious if you would have any examples for this. The earliest soul jazz I have found is Mercy Mercy Mercy from 1965, and the earlier jazz-funk fusion I have heard is Miles Smiles from 1967. I’m always on the hunt for the earliest examples of funk/groove rhythms in popular jazz music, so tell me what you had in mind please! :)

    They must have something in the vinyl formulation that causes the records to have a ton of static. I have to pry my Grant Green Alive off the platter every time I play it.

    An album I brought a little while ago was another Blue Note - Various Artists album called "Blue Bop Great Goatees and Blazing Berets" - www.discogs.com/de/blue-bop-great-goatees-and-blazing-berets/release/6736592
    Track 1 is a really beautiful Gil Evans tune called "Bird Feathers"
    It is worth noting some of the people who played on that tune.
    Julius Watkins - french horn
    Harvey Phillips - tuba
    Cannonball Adderley - alto saxophone (soloist)
    Gil Evans - piano, arranger, conductor
    Chuck Wayne - guitar
    Paul Chambers - bass
    Art Blake - drums
    Art to me here has never sounded so beautiful. Gil was a great arranger, I think second only to Duke
    Ellington. Sadly on some of Gil's last Album's his ideas got a little silly. Jazz orchestra versions of Jimi Hendrix music anyone? That did not make Gil the next Jimi Hendrix!
    "Bird Feathers" - ua-cam.com/video/J0rP8oXb9og/v-deo.html
    Another song on the album I like is “professor Bop” - Babs Gonzales (Who?)

    Solid. Thx 🙏🏼
    What saddens me when you talk about how flat and dead quiet these 80th reissues are is the fact the 75th reissues are not (on the whole).
    Blue Note felt those records needed their day in the sun again more than these selections for the 80th series as they obviously took a backseat.
    But vinyl/jazz have both seen steady upticks since then and so these newest ones and of course the TP series are getting the spa treatment.
    Speaking of, how do you feel about the mastering on these 80th series compared to the KG/Coherent treatment of the TOne Poets?
    Keep them coming 👌🏼

      From what I read, the 75th series was about getting a lower cost reissue of classic BNs into the hands of all the 'new' vinyl lovers out there. The 80 series is geared more to audiophiles. Just my 2 centavos.

    • @coletrain4121
      @coletrain4121 4 роки тому +1

      RR Snads, I wasn’t aware.
      I suppose that makes sense but is disappointing if your favorite Blue Note recording was lopped in with the 75th and not the 80th.

    • @rrsnads9602
      @rrsnads9602 4 роки тому +1

      I hear you. But the 80th series has some more rare LPs, and not just the reissued to death gems like Moanin', Blue Train, Somethin' Else, etc. So that's a plus In my book.Maybe BN saw some price pressure on the Music Matters reissues, and decided to come up with a more affordable 'audiophile grade' reissue.

    • @coletrain4121
      @coletrain4121 4 роки тому

      That’s definitely possible but I thought that’s what the TP series is all about.
      I guess my mistake is I simply saw the 80th as a follow up to the initiative of the 75th, only now BN knows the market would support $24 jazz discs and so they could afford better pressing/quality control.
      I wasn’t under the impression the 80th are treated as “audiophile grade” lp’s.
      Thought that was the TP series.
      Thx for the reply

    Hi Ken. Do you work for Dan the Jazz Shepherd? Is he paying you to promote his UA-cam channel? If he is a Shepherd are you one of his sheep? Lol.
    "Quirt Nights" is a studio album by Jazz musician Miles Davis, and his fourth album collaboration with Gill Evans, released in 1964. It is an album I don't have as I am not that keen on Bossa nova. Miles was not that keen on making a Bossa nova album so the album is unfinished. Teo Macero got the album released against the wishes of Miles so he stopped speaking to Teo for 2 years. The Jazz Messengers, I am a fan of anyone who plays in that band. Not trying to complete my Art Blakey collection, when I see his albums that I don't have always pick them up. "indestructible" is an album I don't have. Good Review of the album.
    I have the best of Horace Silver. I like him never been a big fan.
    "Filthy McNasty" You need to hear the Eddie Jefferson version He is best known for singing words on Jazz instrumentals. Some of his songs work, some like his version of "Milestones" does not work for me.
    Eddie Jefferson Filthy McNasty - ua-cam.com/video/rrwmTr8K_PM/v-deo.html
    I have the song on this album - www.discogs.com/Various-Mod-Jazz/release/1425842

    Really good reviews Ken. Well done.
