    Thank you so much for always sharing your knowledge of Jazz, this time relating the cultural, social, and political statements a 1964 Jazz album would make. As always I look forward to your vast knowledge and information of jazz and other genres of music. Can't wait to see your 1965 Jazz records. Note the great art/photography that can't be reproduced today from the Blue note and Impulse eras. Thank you so much!

    Your videos are a joy to watch, from the Rembrandt lighting to the superior sound quality, it is readily apparent the time you put in to pull this all together. Just the records themselves, e.g. mono, original recordings that are treasures to behold. Then, there is the informational content, worthy of a PBS broadcast. I could spend three months of research and still not be able to pen what comes out of your mouth extemporaneously; like the jazz recordings themselves, your improvisational skills are unsurpassed in the VC. This video is so weird because just yesterday, and old friend laid on me a big chunk of his record collection. I held in my hand "Empryean Isles", although not an original, it was a repress from the very next year and it is in immaculate condition, It will be the first one I listen to because I want to hear "The Egg". Also, lots of stuff with James Spaulding, Jackie McLean, one cool record is a mono pressing of Love Supreme. I recently saw Ravi Coltrane at the Village Vanguard and he was using his father's horn. Although, it was not John, the tone that came out of that horn left me with a numinous experience. The big kick in the head is all these great musicians who are household names and national treasures, were mere kids back in 1964. Amazing! The :"Majestic Eric Dolphy" indeed! A big thumbs up and many stars, Well done sir!

    • @eatsleepvinyl
      @eatsleepvinyl  9 років тому

      EarlofSuave308 Jimmy!!! How the hell are ya man? It's really great to hear from you. First off, you are overly kind with your words. What's truly important to me is the sharing. If folks find a connection with some new music, or are inspired to revisit their collections...then wow! I've been through enough the last two years and don't feel compelled to just sit on my ass and retreat inward. Recorded music in any form are historical artifacts to me, and I love to frame them in context,. I'm happy to share my findings, as loose as they may be. There's always been a crazy synergy with these videos (mine & others) where LP's miraculously appear around an upload. Sounds like a very cool score with a mono "Love Supreme'...holy smokes, that's cooler then cool!!!! You hit the nail on the head about the youth movement of 1964...BUT...the other 'kick in the head' is that no matter their age, they had to know their shit, inside and out. No posers allowed. I can't say the same is true today. Ah nice that you saw Ravi at VV. I love that place, the history, and intimacy are lovely. Man that took some balls, even for Ravi to break out his dad's horn, and at the VV...numinous indeed. I've always loved Dolphy, but in recent months he's grown to exhausted status. Are you still booking it down to NOLA? Have you had the most amazing breakfast at Elizabeth's in the Bywater? Thanks for taking some time to hang with the video, and your comment man!!!!

    Teddy - As always great stuff! Even though your on a different Jazz path than my own its still wonderful to hear you reflect on the different albums and give a little historical nugget or two. As for Out To Lunch, I think I dove into that one a little too early. I do recognize it for what it is but can't connect with it. That said, I have been able to work my way into the great Trilogy...Destination Out, Evolution, and One Step Beyond. Hope your on the upswing in life...so many downers for many members of the VC these past several months.

      eat.sleep.vinyl I am centered around much of the hard bop that was being put out in the 50's and 60's. I do dip into modal, 70's funk/fusion and have a few pieces of avant and free. Love your channel by the way. Always did because you have a great narrative to go along with what you show. BTW - I recently made a reference to a thread you kicked into full gear a few years ago but I think you took down the video that started it all on your old channel ;) I went searching for it but could find it. Hey there!! Thanks for watching and dropping a line. While I dig avant garde / free jazz, I will say that I feel passionate about a fairly wide range of genres...even, vintage, classic country for instance. Killer video Teddy! I have the Andrew Hill and the Gil Evans (so the latter not on vinyl) - two absolute masters of music. Interesting perspective on Herbie - he is certainly an amazing listener - tuning in to the immediate future. I love Crescent too - really beautiful music. Oh yes - Out to Lunch - phew what a selection! Roll on 1965!

    • @eatsleepvinyl
      @eatsleepvinyl  9 років тому

      drrhythm Thanks so much Mark! Hill and Evans were two masters indeed. They could see way deeper into creating arrangements. So impressive. On Herbie, the Mwandishi band followed Bitches Brew, The Headhunters followed Weather Report, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever. Future Shock (Rock It) followed early Hip Hop, etc. He's never been out front of things, but just behind leaders, and usually very interesting. I'm on a mission for more people to know about Crescent. It really is an impressive grouping of albums.

    Great feature here, Teddy! Striking how ahead of the time so much of this music sounds. Want to hear more of just about everything here. The 'Evolution' sounds quite haunting. I have far too few Coltranes though that sounds like an obvious eventual choice. Dolphy's bass clarinet gave me a nice shake 'o the shoulders with that Mingus. 'Out to Lunch' is the only one of these I have and has been far too long since it's last listening here. Yes, nothing like music that can't be easily defined. Wonderful stuff here, and great seeing you back so soon. Looking forward to the next year. :-) -Carm

    • @eatsleepvinyl
      @eatsleepvinyl  9 років тому

      Gorvo31 I Carm! Thank you sir. The sound samples generally focused on the edgier material contained within said LP. There's still plenty of hard bop to still go 'round. That's what was so interesting to me here was the transition and growing pains that was occurring. 'Out to Lunch" is the only fully transitioned LP of the bunch. But overall, this was a really cool and fruitful exploration....and there's never enough Coltrane in one's collection. Yeah man, Eric Dolphy...if anything, I walk away with an even greater appreciation of Dolphy then I already had. I am thinking hard about diving into 1965, a phenomenal year for 'The New Thing". But I have to be honest, trying to tackle 'A Love Supreme" is a pretty daunting proposition. By the way, I have yet to tackle your most recent magum opus....stay tuned . Be well - Teddy

    The Granchan Moncur III sample you played sounds fantastic. Never heard Freddie Hubbard sound like that, very interesting! I have been listening to that Herbie Hancock album a bit lately... The Elvin Jones is right at the edge of what I like, and what the wife hates :) .

    • @eatsleepvinyl
      @eatsleepvinyl  9 років тому +2

      dixielandfarm Hey Kris! Yeah, Moncur III had a small but interesting run of albums on Blue Note in the '60's. I'm guessing a little too moody for most at the time. Freddie Hubbard has such a hit and miss discography, but the hits are indeed worthy. Headphones should be standard issue for all marriages. There is a musical dividing line in my house as well ;-)

    Wow, this is the first video of yours I've come across.... and it's definitely earned you a sub, haha! Right there with you on this period in jazz--I love free jazz, and consume it regularly like vitamins, but some of my very favorite jazz records are those that are right on the cusp, just as you articulate in this video. I have to count myself among those who have overlooked Gil Evans, so that's one I'm gonna be looking for right there! (There are a couple of others I'm missing too, for sure........) Thanks for making this!

      Metal Theologian Nice, and welcome aboard! I too generally swim more in the deeper end of the jazz pool, but this was a very cool revisit. Gil Evans does not have the same youthful edge as the other albums/artists, but the complexity of his arrangements are something to behold.

    Brilliant idea with a top ten from '64!
    I got Destination... Out! just a few days after last time we spoke, I really like it! Evolution is great, we talked about that one ;-) I agree, Williams was fantastic in the mid 60's. I still need Black Fire on vinyl, I've been listening a lot to Andrew Hill lately, great band leader and yeah he had some awesome sax players on his Blue Note albums.
    I haven't listened to the Gil Evans, nice recommendation, I will pick it up, I thought it was recorded later, great line up on that one, sounds like a must have! "Breaking Point" is an album I've seen but never listened to, will check it out, I do like Freddie Hubbard!
    I will grab a Music Matters 33rpm of that Hancock album, classic!
    Illumination is a very good album! Great pick, I met Simmons and have a couple of albums signed by him :-)
    Crecent is mind-blowing, my friend Emil (fantastic trumpet player) who also is a Coltrane freak have been talking this one as his favorite Impulse! Coltrane. I also love it!
    Really need to revisit Town Hall Concert, I also have the OJC pressing.
    So many interesting thoughts about all the albums Teddy!
    "Out To Lunch" is a ten!!!
    Fantastic video my friend talk soon!!

      AndersInStockholm Anders! How are you my friend? Have you moved into your new place? I figured you would be right in synch with these choices from 1964. I'm glad you picked up Destination...Out! and Evolution. Do you have McLean's One Step Beyond? I think it's the first recording with Tony Williams, and is the third of that cool trio of albums. Andrew Hill is so fascinating as a composer, pianist and leader. Black Fire is a must. All of these albums are worthy of picking up if you don't have them...Wow, you met Sonny Simmons? I guess we haven't talked about him. I was telling Mark (drrhythm) that I'm on a mission to bring Crescent out of the shadows. If it wasn't wedged between Live at Birdland and A Love Supreme it would be well known. Do dive back into the Town Hall Concert. Dolphy is on!! and speaking of Dolphy being on, I would say 'Out to Lunch' is not a ten, but an eleven!!! Let's talk soon.

    Thank you Teddy. What a thorough overview of an incredible year in jazz. You presented these albums so well. The only one I am not familiar with is the Gil Evans on verve. I will keep an eye out for that. I have the 2 releases of his on impulse. Out of the cool and into the hot I believe. I lied. The elvin Jones illumination was new to me. Can't wait for that. I love collecting impulse. I have a WLP of dear john c. I have many jackie McLean albums on cd but not destination out. I will check it out. You have inspired me to go back and listen to these albums again. I have a lot of them on cd but not vinyl. Yeah also kind of made me want to get them on wax. However I don't think seeking out originals is realistic. Looking forward to 65. I need to check out crescent. A hole in my coltrane impulse collection that should be filled. - Kieran

      Needle Groove Hi Kieran, this was truly a fun exercise and rediscovery of some wonderful albums, and I'm really glad that you and others here are digging it as well, and are inspired to jump in the jazz time machine and give them a spin again. Of course my feeling is listening to these on vinyl, is to listen to them in their original language....even reissues when the originals are out of reach. Crescent is a very rich album, not the 'sheets of sound' variety, but a more mellow affair. Thanks again for stopping by.

    Teddy great revisit '64 and some ones I need to get like Evolution, Breaking Point, Black fire and Gil Evans . Impulse A 66 is my all time favorite Coltrane I was introduce to it by a coworker a very underrated masterpiece Lonnie's Lament massive one of Trane's best playing . Eric Dolphy Out to Lunch and incredible ride love it Eric dolphy is so influential that he had Coltrane picking up the flute. Herbie Hancock great realize love the Egg Herbie played on so many classic Blue note recordings awesome video Teddy you know your stuff great channel.

      lovell andrew Hey Lovell! Thanks for checking it out. Very cool, that 'Crescent" is your fav Coltrane. Agreed about "Lonnie's Lament." Yeah you're spot on about the Dolphy/Trane flute connection. Blue Note had an amazing stable of young players (including Herbie). One thing is clear...it didn't matter how old you were. What did matter, is you had to know your shit inside and out, upside and down. I really appreciate your comment

      That's great! Beyond his only other release on BN 'Some Other Stuff', which is cool too, he plays a prominent role on a couple of Jackie McLean's BN relases; 'One Step Beyond" and 'Destination Out.' I'm also quite fond of his title 'New Africa' on the BYG Actuel label (that one has been reissued)

    • @Localbandography
      @Localbandography 7 років тому

      Perfect. Thanks so much for the recommendations. I will pick those up next. I loved the interviews with Jackie on the Ken Burns documentary of Jazz. Needlegroove up in Montreal also recommended the Africa release. I'm on it. French label I believe.

    • @eatsleepvinyl
      @eatsleepvinyl  7 років тому +2

      If you like 'Evolution', you would dig the McLean's I mentioned as they are essentially the same group. BYG Actuel was a French label. Originals can be pricey, but 'New Africa' was reissued. It's one of the more accessible releases the label ever issued.

    Wow, Illumination sounds like a must have. Top notch knock out musicians on that one. > Never saw that Coltrane album either. Quick question: Did you say that the Town Hall Concert was the album that was released right before Love Supreme? At this point in the video proceedings I am thinking to myself how darn amazing your collection is.
    Whew. I actually have one out of the ten 1964 choices. Eric Dolphy's "Out To Lunch' just blew me away the very first time I heard it. This is coming from someone who is still 'greener than Grant' when it comes to jazz . In your words "it is a masterpiece".
    The next time we go digging together I am sure our jazz conversations will be a little more stimulating on my end. Although I will appreciate every tidbit of information that you can muster up.
    Thanks so much for taking the time out to post this. I will be referencing this video for the next few days.

    Wow. Incredible. Some very interesting choices and a valuable music history lesson for me, particularly the Blue Note titles which as you said, may have fallen off the radar but deserve to be reexamined. I've always found the Blue Notes kind of perplexing with all of the constant reissuing of some titles and extreme rarity of others. The easiest way to acquire Blue Notes in my experience is just to grab any of them that I see on CD! My only rule of thumb is I try to avoid the remasters as many of them tend to sound shrill and brittle. Even with that philosophy, I still don't have Destination Out!, Breaking Point, Black Fire, Evolution, etc. Gotta get my ass in gear.

      John Kieffer Hey John, Oh I'm quite aware of you. I love the listening session video's you and Mark do! You guys so comfortably make your way through a wide swatch of music with interesting anecdotes and opinions. You also blew me away with one of your solo videos where you flashed your original copy of Milford Graves/Don Pullen 'Nommo"...Wow! I'm also good friends with Anders, and I recall a video where he was in London with you. I really appreciate you stopping by and dropping off a comment. The mid-sixties were such a wonderfully evolving period in jazz, and I'm pleased that it's hit a sweet spot for others like yourself. Arriving at a favorite 10 releases from 1965 is going to be one 'Sophie's Choice' after another, as it's an even more interesting year with the 'New Thing' finding it's way onto vinyl via ESP Disk, etc. At first blush 'JC Quartet Plays' is lurking outside my top 10, but like 'Crescent' it's often overlooked as it followed 'A Love Supreme. Speaking of 'ALS', what a daunting proposition to add ANYTHING to that 50 year conversation. I hope things are going well for you, and that someday you might be inspired and have the time to offer up a new solo video. You know your stuff. However, I clearly know how difficult that can be. Have a good one - Teddy

    Nice video. I love Destination out. But I think Mulligan's pianoless quartet predates this by more than a decade and personally I prefer the Mulligan-Baker pianoless quartets. But this is a masterpiece in its own respect. Plus I think this has vibes.

      @eatsleepvinyl  9 років тому +1

      Arun nurA Thanks, and I appreciate your comment. You are correct about Mulligan. You could also toss Jimmy Giuffre's pianoless trio in there as well. However, the point was not about who was first, but a synergy that was afoot in 1964 that culminated with 'Out to Lunch' There's also a whole back story to Jackie Mclean's drug conviction and loss of his caberet card, where he had to rely on recording and went with a youth movement of players, like Tony Williams etc. Fascinating stuff when you string it together.

    I don;t wish to carp, but this seems to be merely a summary of mostly very well-recognised Blue Note avant-bop masters? Blue Note - the hack's saviour.
    The late Richard Cook's book on the label is the onethat interested listeners need to access.
    Worrying to see more vinyl fetishishism in this video that is so off-putting, and which makes jazz look like a nerd fest, sadly. There seems to be so many lazy soi disant 'really cool' middle aged video makers out there, all plugging the same albums..
    Gil Evans released Into the Cool and Out of the Hot, by the way, so he is not that under-exposed in the 60s.
    Sun Ra? Sam Rivers? Bobby Hutcherson? Tony Williams solo? Ayler's Spiritual Unity? A Love Supreme, for Christ's sake? Come on, get a grip!!

    • @eatsleepvinyl
      @eatsleepvinyl  4 роки тому +1

      It seems you missed a couple of things upfront in this video. First and foremost, these are MY 10 favorite jazz albums from 1964, not yours or anyone else. I look forward to you jumping into some video making and offering your thoughts on such matters....that is if you have the courage and the skills to go beyond the comment section of UA-cam. Also, I stated these are recordings that were released in '64. Sure there are some cool and important recordings that were laid down in '64, but not released until '65 or later, but that's where I drew the line. 'Into the Cool' and 'Out of the Hot' were released in '61 & '62 and don't fit the 1964 premise. River's: 'Fuscia Swing Song', Hutcherson: 'Dialogue', Ayler: 'Spiritual Unity', Coltrane: 'A Love Supreme'...ALL... released in '65. You get the point now? Williams: Life Time was released in '64, but didn't make my 10. If I made it my 'Top 11', it would have likely snuck in. A little more attention to what's going on before you launch into a rant would be encouraged.
