    What a timely review. I've been wondering about those Tone Poet series LPs. Just ordered one of those SRX LPs to compare it to a BN 75th copy (Horace Silver) that I already own. However, if those Tone Poet LPs sound great and have the high quality gatefold sleeves, then that may be the way to go. Just discovered a tiny record store in town that has a several of the Tone Poet LPs and they were asking a reasonable price for them. Think I may be paying them another visit. Thanks for another great video Ken, the Jazz VC really appreciates all your information and humor. "And God knows, with the state of things in this country, we can use all the laughs and good music we can get." Cheers!

    Your tip on the Tone Poet series was spot on. Gorgeous packaging and sonically rich and well crafted. Don Was is really looking out for the JVC with this round of reissues. I recently ordered an SRX copy Horace Silver's "Song for My Father", so I'll hold my judgement until I get a chance to listen to it, but "dang...." the copy of "Etcetera" I picked up yesterday was impressive. Music Matters puts out some fantastic reissues, but if I can get the same audiophile quality at half the price....."well." Plus I think it's such a great service to the newcomers to the JVC who can't afford to drop $75 a pop for an LP. I picked up 3 of the Tone Poet offerings two days ago for less than $28 (each, obviously). How can you beat that? Thanks for another great video Ken. Cheers!
    Update: I received my Music Matters SRX copy of "Song for My Father" today and had a chance to give it a listen. I'm not hearing any ultra-quite vinyl (maybe more noticeable on better decks?), but "DAAAAAMN son" that record sounds amazing. I compared it to my BN 75th version of this album and it's no comparison. I wish there was a Tone Poet or BN 80th version of "Song for My Father" to compare, but it doesn't appear there are any pressed. That being said, I would have to agree that the Tone Poet series is definitely comparable to the MM SRX LPs. Ironically my copy of "Etcetera" (Tone Poet) is actually quiter than the MM SRX copy of "Song for My Father". Cheers!

    I have all of the Tone Poets, except the Cassandra Wilson, they are great. I paid 25.99 at my local store so I snapped them up, Cassandra Wilson is 41.99. The 80th Anniversary are also not bad and there is a lot of good stuff coming for the 80th Anniversary into 2020, like the 75th Anniversary. The 75th Anniversary was a mixed bag, but cheap. Andrew Hill is great, I have that original Andrew Hill smiling on his al um Andrew. Great reviews here Ken, I also had a copy of Black fire and just decided to get this and I’m glad I did. I have no SRX pressings. I hope Tone Poet gets that Thad Jones one that Music Matters has. That Kenny Burrell is one I had been looking for, for so long and couldn’t fine it, it sounds outstanding.

    Really got to hand it to Alfred for supporting Hill.You get Lee Morgan,Wayne Shorter,etc based on sales.Sometimes he loved what sold to like Jimmy Smith (supposedly he wanted to close the shop and go on road as Jimmy road manager.He must have been heart broken when Verve poached him).But the "New Thing" typse of player like Hill or Sam Rivers that takes commitment beyond sales.

I've featured the tone poets a few times, just did a review of the new Blue Note doc, did a series on Ornette yesterday... but Ken you are certainly the best channel for good jazz reviews, no question, your knowledge of jazz and vinyl pressings etc is beyond - the rest of us are just amateurs having a good time. I'm glad to know that it's not my turntable that's causing the distortion on some of the newly pressed reissues I've been purchasing. I had one of the SRX mono albums and one of the tracks sounded horrible. I thought it was a bad pressing and requested and got another one, some situation. So I can guess that the original source tape contained the distorted sound.

    Black and bitter, like my coffee, like my women...? (You like black women) I forgot about you Americans and coffee. Here in England I only drink Earl Grey tea at Buckingham Palace when I go to the garden party and see the Queen.
    Dexter Gordon, I have some of his music under some Art Blakey albums. No room in the racks. I don't play his music much and I really should.
    For my ears, it was like you play Miles Davis albums and sooner or later you will hear John Coltrane and want to hear his albums. I thought those horn players are good so I check out other horn players be they trumpet, sax or whatever players. That's how I came to Dexter, Sonny and the rest.
    Good shout on the Andrew Hill album. Nice to hear his name.
    Kenny Burrell, I Just Find Jazz guitar weird, Rock is fine, Blues is fine, Country I am English so what do I know about country music. I have some Wes Montgomery I can tell he is good but it's not my cup of English tea. I get what you mean about conga drums even Nat "King" Cole had a conga player in his band at one point in time. As others have said here great reviews.

    I have 3 of the 4 Tone Poet series Blue Note records you're referring to - I'd have to count them, but I fell in love with the series as soon as I heard the first record I bought and just kept building my collection from there - personally, I highly recommend any of them, and yes, some are better "balanced stereo wise" than others but I've yet to buy a less than exquisite pressing and or a less than exquisite sounding Tone Poet record - even audiophiles who are not that interested in jazz but like vinyl should buy a couple if for no other reason than, in my opinion, they're investing in some of the best vinyl pressings (very quite, very) and seemingly uncompressed, natural sounding records out there. No joke, if you need a break from the over processing that goes on these days, at least once in a while, then these records are your ticket. Thanks for Sharing Ken, excellent vid.

    Im in the market to buy a Kenny Burell record. I do have Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane CD. Wish a good re-issue of Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue would come out. From what i've heard the recent CD re-issue sounds super compressed. The Dexter Gordon Clubhouse sounds good when i previewed it on You Tube so I'll be picking up a vinyl copy since finding the 2007 CD remaster is next to impossible. Listening to jazz on vinyl is a better overall experience to my ears. Introducing Kenny Burrell vinyl re-issue I'll be picking up too wow what a great sounding album.

    Most of my Blue Note LPs are the DMM pressings from the mid to late 80s and they do sound a bit bright, yet on the cheapo system I had at the time they sounded great. But now with a more suitable turntable and cartridge, they do sound a bit harsh. I do like these new "Tone Poet" pressings very much. What I don't understand is why people don't like the 75th anniversary series from 5 years ago. They sound almost as good as the new 80th anniv. and the tone poet LPs.

    • @alansenzaki4148
      @alansenzaki4148 4 роки тому

      The 75th series were done from digital masters not original analogue tape. The tone poets and 80th are from the original tapes. If you do an A/B comparison (i have) you can hear the difference. Both are good but the analogue is fuller with soundstage, detail, and warmth.

    Hey Ken (or any other members of the JVC), remember that old Paul Newman movie called "the Hustler"? A true classic. Anyway I picked up the OST because the music throughout the movie is just fantastic. The only problem with the soundtrack is that it only has a slew of short pieces. I was hoping that there were more "actual" tunes, but apparently they were written for the length of the scene and that's it.
    So the question is, could you recommend an album or two (or ten) that have the same feel and texture of this soundtrack? I'm listening to "Night Dreamer" right now and it made me think of that it so I thought I'd see if you might know where I could find some more of this kind of stuff. All suggestions are welcome.
    😁✌️Cheers!

    I have to say that to see alway Andrew Hill introduced with a comparison to Thelonious Monk doesn't do him justice. It would not be correct to present Coltrane and Dolphy as musicians influenced by Parker, while it's technically correct. Sure, there's some truth in saying that Hill sounds a bit like "Monk with less humour", but (even if probably it's not what you meant) it seems like he was just a gifted epigone and not much more than that. While he was one of the most extraordinary musicians (and composers) in the genre.

      This is a discussion better suited to my group. for starters, MM's $65 and whatever price they end up, and TP's list price of $35, which can be had much cheaper. I have no idea what's up with KC. Maybe ask Ron Rambach. But on my rig, MMs uniformly sound lush, pretty, thick and lacking in dynamics. And they remove the sound of RVG's studio, the ambience of the room, his cues. TPs are closer to the originals (and I own and have heard many from Lex to 63rd) with better top-end resolution and dynamics. That's my answer, and I won't go into an extensive back and forth here. I've discussed this ad nauseum, and won't repeat myself here. Thanks.

    Great.The Baby Face 80's stinks

  • @mymixture965
    @mymixture965 4 роки тому

    The Baby Face record has a serious problem with the guitar sound, heavy digital distortion. I think it was recorded that way, you hear it is a distortion of the guitar channel, a mistake RVG made. Some guitar player fiddle with the volume knob on the guitar and this can drive ingeneers crazy as they gain a channel for one volume and when you change it on the instrument, it will generate problems. With piano sound? RVG made everything sound great except piano, RVG´s piano is a no go, nobody likes it who ever heard a real piano. This tell you that nobody is perfect, even not recording god RVG.
