- Hello Friends! This video is all about Tinnitus - also known as ear ringing - and TMJ Disorders - also known as TMJ/TMD or TMJD. Tinnitus is ringing in one or both ears that can be a low roar or a high squeal. It can be very manageable OR it can be debilitating.
Tinnitus is the one symptom that unfortunately does not respond predictably to our treatment.
Typical symptoms that come to mind when we think of TMJ Disorders are clicking, popping, crackling noises in the jaw, episodes of the jaw catching or locking, headaches, neck pain, ear pain, and jaw pain.

This channel is all about TMJ disorders - what they are, how they manifest, what to do about them and how they relate to other issues that may be going unnoticed in the body such as tongue tie, sleep apnea, ADHD, and more! I will also be posting about being a dentist and a working mommy to two wonderful children. Thank you and I hope you enjoy my videos! - Наука та технологія
I have hypermobile Ehlers Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and I’ve had TMJ issues for such a long time. Because jaw alignment and TMJ issues are very related to my cervical spine instability I can experience changes in my tinnitus based on things like my jaw placement, jaw clenching, head tilt/position, and neck position. Thank you for these videos as I’m putting together daily routines of massage, strength building, and specific, but GENTLE, stretches on areas of tension as I’m extremely drconditioned and I’m trying to get my health back to a better spot. Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Hello. Thank you so much for posting these videos. I believe I have watched all of them and they have really helped me understand what is going on with my jaw. If I didn't live in the DC area I would definitely be in your office. In one of your videos you said to contact you and you might be able to recommend a local dentist that has sound methodology similar to your office. Do you have any recommendations for the greater DC area? Thank you!
Hi there! What are your specific symptoms?
Thanks for the reply. Started last November with fullness in my left ear. About week later I lost a lot of my ability to hear high frequency sounds. Low frequency is still fine but lost some high frequency in the left ear. A couple more weeks later and high frequency tinnitus started in the left ear. Another couple weeks past and I started having persistent lightheadedness. My balance is fine but I feel lightheaded all day every day. All of those symptoms persist to this day. What made me think I have tmjd is my lower jaw deviates to the left on opening and then draws a sort of s shape on the way closed. Looking for doctors in the DC area. Thank you so much for your time!
@@dparsons0617 what happened now?
@@dparsons0617 I have the exact same issue regarding my jaw not opening straight. Instead it opens side to side and I have locking in my left TMJ. As well as the ringing ofc
Great Video on Tinnitus and TMJD!!
Thank you!
Hi Doc, many thanks for the video! I have constant tone in my ears and when I stretch my jaw very wide open I get a very high pitched frequency, also when I stretch my neck to my shoulder on one side I get the same high pitch noise, do you think my tinnitus is TMJ related?
Hi Tom. I can't really answer this without examining you in person. It certainly sounds like it could be related to jaw position.
I Have A Similar Experience When I Open My Jaw , Or Move My Head Ieft To Right , I Get A Ringing Sound In My Ears Also .
Doctor Priya. I don't have problems with jaw joint but muscles and suboccipital muscles which are causing constant headache. Is michigan splint a good start to help with muscles? I open mouth for 37mm and I don't clench my teeth at all :D
I cannot recommend a splint over the internet without examining you in person sorry.
Thankyou for the video sad but at least you're honest
You’re welcome! Sorry I don’t have a solution!
have any of your patients talked about taking a supplement for their tinnitus caused by tmjd and found it helped get rid of theirs?
No.. sorry

Hello. Thank you much for this videos! Do you have any recommendation of a doctor office I could visit in NYC? I have Tinnitus that started 1 year ago, I felt fullness in my right ear. Got a bad infection from it and I lost a lot of my ability to hear high frequency sounds. Low frequency is still good but I also lost some hearing. At the moment ear fullness sensation is even worst than the Tinnitus itself. for a coupe months I was having very bad Vertigo episodes. My balance seems to be fine now but I feel lightheaded in cars sometimes. All of those symptoms persist to this day. What made me think I have tmjd is my lower jaw deviates to the right on opening and then draws a sort of s shape on the way closed. I feel and hear a click on my right ear and also some numbness in that side of my face. Looking for doctors in New York City. Thank you so much for your time!
You could try Dr. Laura Torrado :) I've heard good things about her.
TMJ orthotics can reposition joint ,disc , ligament. Mam . Is this useful
Yes the point is to reposition the joint and it’s components to a more favorable position.
Could that be a stress trigger or due to civic-19 vaccination?
I really don’t know, sorry.
Thanks for this video, I appreciate you're so honest and you don't give us false hopes. I know tinnitus is such a complex condition. Scientists have no idea what does cause it yet.
Yes the causes are often multi factorial.
I am so happy that I found your channel I was so depressed because I have developed so many symptoms and I could not understand what was happening. It started with ear pain, then I developed i floaters and now I have ringing in my ears. My dentist did tell me that I grind my teeth at night, but it’s all making sense now that these are all related to TMJ.
Are there any doctors in South Florida that you might know who can treat TMJ?
I'm getting exactly through the same as you, I hope you find a good specialist near to you. These symptoms are kind of scary.
I’d recommend starting with Dr Robert Murdocco - he’s an excellent TMJ Physical Therapist in Miami.
I also have all these symptoms happened after the birth of my son ringing in ears, eye floaters, jaw neck and ear pain it's debilitating 😥
Tinnitus and eye floaters
Same as you in the same order. I don't grind my tenth but clench my jaw back when stressed and apparently at night. Tough to fix because mouth guard doesn't stop the motion that I seem to do with my jaw. Still exploring treatments.
Hi doc! Does splint really effective to unlock lockjaw? Btw, this video is helpful and informative.❤️🇵🇭
A splint alone does not do this. We us splints, myofascial release and osteopathic manual jaw manipulation.
Thank you so much you gave me so many answers I do have head and neck injury I have muscle spasm and I also have a little diabetes going on with me thank you so so much you have answered my question and now I know what to go to my ENT in and say to him and let him know and I also have problems with nerve damage thank you thank you thank you

Hey Dr. Priya. I’m currently a physical therapist student and I’ve suffered from TMJD for a few years now due to a traumatic event.
What I’ve found the most useful is getting Botox shots on my jaw muscles. For half a year, I had no tinnitus at all. Have you ever heard of a similar case like mine?
No I have not heard that before but thats wonderful that you didn’t have tinnitus for 6 months! Did it come back full force after that? Did you get Botox again?
@@theTMJdoc Hey Doc, thanks for replying to my comment.
When the botox wore off, the tinnitus came back intermittently. While I did consider it again, I voted against it because I felt like I was doing myself a disservice if I didn't figure out the root of the problem.
After researching, I was able to deduce that I grind my teeth at night and day from stress and anxiety. Ultimately, what worked for me the best, in the long run, is taking care of my physical, spiritual, and mental health.
Right now, I have chronic tinnitus in both ears but it's at a baseline where I can't hear it unless it's in a quiet room. It only increases during stressful and anxiety-filled days. With my background in Physical Therapy, I am hoping I can specialize in TMJD so I can help others out!
Hi mam , I have ice prick pain in one year several times a day and had mri on 1.5t and it shows nothing even 7th and 8th nerve complex is normal both sides ,it's on left side. What it could be and feel pain in neck sometimes and in front of ear too when pressed
It could be TMJD but I really couldn't tell you for sure over the internet and without examining you in person.
Do you know anyone in Houston Texas to help me? I have pressure in my ear and a locked jaw
Dr. Paul Levine, Dr. Paul Graf, or Dr. Patricia Serna are all in Houston and may be able to help you.
@@theTMJdoc thank you so very much!!!
@@tashahimmatramka9555 you’re welcome!
For quite some time a custom made dental splint helped me. As a matter of fact, my TMJ was caused by teeth clenching, which further on led to tinnitus.
The reason why I’m having my tinnitus come back again is because my dental splint doesn’t fit my teeth anymore and therefore need a new one.
@@jessicamarques8532 yes, definitely get a new one! Good luck to you!
@@theTMJdoc thanks a lot doctor!!
@@jessicamarques8532 you’re welcome!
@@jessicamarques8532 I have tinnitus in my left ear, did the MRI with an ENT and it came back clear... Maybe tmj is causing it? I don't have jaw pain or anything tho? Would i go to a dentist to see if I have it?
My tinnitus will come and go with my tmj symptoms but I will find it changes also when my jaw moves in different places meaning side to side back and forward.
Same here. I've noticed some really solid improvement in my tinnitus as my neck tension, jaw pain, and headaches improved, but then became worse when these symptoms did.
From the video, I'm surprised to hear that only a small portion of people got improvement along the way. Maybe there are other contributing factors in the cases described.
I started mewing about a year ago and started having tinnitus about 5 months ago.. I’m gonna stop mewing and hope that it goes away, I suspect mewing is causing ear bone changes
best of luck to you!
Is there any scientific research papers one can reference that correlates the two?
Not that I’m aware of
Pls advise what’s the cure for tmj and tinnitus (these 2 suckers). we want information and cure as the doctors aren’t helping.
I don't have a cure for tinnitus. As for TMJD, please watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/iF-min1q24M/v-deo.html
Hello doc,
I have been diagnosed with tmj disorder.
And my doctor advice to do t scan and correction by tens.
After 1 sitting of tens 3 cycle which i got on jaw and shoulder.
After 3 cycle of tens majority of my symptoms got relieved.
But i got continue tinnitus of left ear after 1 sitting...
Can you help me to relieve tinnitus.?
Is that caused by tens therapy......?
TENS therapy does not cause tinnitus. Also, I don't have a solution for tinnitus.
I have mild tinnitus which doesn't affect me too much but unfortunately I have TMJ. My tmj is mild but im worried incase I need surgery later..... My question is can TMJ surgery actually cause or worsen tinnitus permanently. This is the thing I'm worried about and it is on my mind constantly.
Sorry to hear that! Yes tinnitus can be really difficult to live with
@@theTMJdoc Oh ok, can TMJ surgery cause tinnitus as a risk side effect permanently.?
@@bennybenny7382 potentially it could yes.

I have really bad sound sensitivity
Is it related to my TMJD?
It could be though that is not the most common symptom.
Do you have any Dr you can recommend in NJ?
I'm sorry, I don't know anyone there.
Thank you for this video . Could you please talk about low level laser or ultrasound therapies for tmj .
I would but I don’t have much experience with those therapies.

How common is temper change as a trigger for tinnitus?
An example: exposure to freezing temperatures transition to room temp.
That’s not something I hear often… sorry I don’t have a better answer
Thank u ❤
You're welcome 😊
I have found that tinnitus improved with dietary changes
That's great!
What diet changes did u do?
My tinnitus gets worse with just a little cold. It’s really annoying 😢
Sorry to hear that! 😞
I like what you said about the list of causes:I guess in some cases it comes down to process of elimination. I woke up one morning in December 2020 and had this strange vibration and fullness in my left ear. Prior to that I had a very bad cold and mucus. Our dog happen to pass away in late June and I cried nearly all day for 3 days. My left ear became clogged. Absolute no hearing for one day. The next day it was semi clogged and I took a Sudafed. The 3rd day I woke up with completely normal hearing for 5 days. I was painting my livingroom and noticed some sinus issuse and it came back
Sorry to hear this. The clogged ear sensation is very uncomfortable.
Mine is so similar to yours. All came on after I had to put my cat down and I was crying for the next week beside my myself. Then the tinnitus and the jaw issues started. That was a year ago this month 😢
@@rachaelrobins9855 did they disappear? I have the same..
@@HelixBeats98 they did not. Though we did finally find the cause. My jaw is too far back, especially on my symptomatic side. It had likely been like this since my early teens but it just went that step further where it started causing these problems. I'm waiting to get a splint which will hopefully bring it further forward.
@@rachaelrobins9855 thanks for your response. I will get it checked out asap to try and limit the consequences
