The greatest game I've ever sat Thur. And I am a die hard Patriots fan. But this game was the most memorable game why I don't know. I sat in Fenway park in 1966 I was in the 4 the grade to sit in the bleachers was 1.25 for Sox games the Patriots were .2.00 loved it. Cokes were 50 cents hot dogs were .50 cents.programs were 75 cents. Go to the history of the new England Patriots you will see Fenway park set up for football. I was crying after this game I was so excited they pulled it out. This is easily one of the greatest playoff games ever. So tense and the quality of play was amazing. Red Sox first baseman Dave Stapleton jumped for joy like they won the World Series as he squeezed the last out even though they still trailed the series 3-2 with the victory. The game was that intense.
I would trade in 4 or 5 Patriots Super Bowls if it meant I could go back in time and see the '86 Sox win the World Series. I was 13 years old in 1986 and I loved that team.
What an unbelievable ballgame. I didn't start following baseball until the '90s but I've seen the highlights of this game and read a lot about this game as well as the whole 1986 postseason. I can only imagine how much a nervous wreck fans were both sides....but particularly Red Sox nation, just when it looked as if their season was all over they stormed back and won this game and the Angels STILL had a chance to win this game even after blowing it in the 9th inning. Incredible drama it must've been for sure. The last 2 games back in Boston turned out to be one-sided for the Sawx who came back & won this series after.
Big Sox fan, was in Italy during this series would be out on a balcony at 2-3 am listening on the Armed Forces Radio Station. The Chicago Cubs heartbreak in 1984 and 2003 was worse than the 1986 Angels. The curse of the Billy goat was the ultimate and worse curse ever in all of baseball for the Cubs. Even worse than the curse of the Bambino.
People focus on Henderson's homerun, but the hero of that game without a doubt was Rich Gedman. He had four hits including a two run homer. He gunned down both runners who tried to steal -- White and Downing. He got on base in the 9th so that Henderson's homer scored two. In the 11th he bunted Baylor over to third and beat out the throw to first. Baylor then scored the winning running on a sacrifice fly. And he caught Crawford, who hardly pitched in the regular season or playoffs. It's too bad he didn't get more recognition for dominating that game.
From goat to hero. Time flies. Dave Henderson passed away almost 5 years ago. He lived reallly realy close by in W Seattle and always stopped to flash his smile and say hello. Devoted to his son and the challenges therein, He demonstated compassion and led by example. By my being born in the Bay Area near Oakland and being raised in the San Joaquin Valley near his hometown there, and a college athlete, I could relate to his accomplishments. I was a six year old Red Sox fan at the time, and I can honestly say that Dave Henderson became one of my favorite players. He’s still remembered very fondly in Boston. Had the Sox won the Series, he would have been an absolute legend, which is something, considering that he had fewer than 30 RBI in his Red Sox regular season career.
And you managed to get the catch by Downing in at 13:30 that is edited out of many of these packages. Nice job. Agree with the rest. This postseason was the best ever. And what I'd do to have baseball go back to this type game, when Dwight Evans almost guns the runner down at the plate, in that era you didn't have to worry about a plate blockage call.
The previous year was the first year when the best of 7 was instituted in the LCS. What amazing post-seasons we may have had if that was the case prior to '85.
I remember this day as a little kid. I thought for sure we were going to lose this game, but the Henderson home run was an absolute miracle! Stanley sucked so bad. So big slow and lumbering as a pitcher.
Big moment at the time but doesn't seem to matter. If Henderson doesn't hit that homerun the grounder doesn't go thru Buckner's glove, Donnie Moore doesn't commit suicide.
If you read about it, Donnie Moore had a lot of problems at home that bottomed out, and came very close to taking his estranged wife and kids with him. His professional career would have faded anyway whether he gave up the home run or not, and at that point his problems at home would have manifest as they did. I’m sure the home run didn’t help his psyche but the popular narrative that he killed himself over giving up the home run is hyperbole at best

I was at Reggie Jackson's last game as an Oakland Athletic on my birthday October 4, 1987 at old Comiskey Park in Chicago as a 14 year old. And he got a base hit in his last major league at bat.

Gene Mauch overmanaged this game. Witt should have finished. He was the Angels best pitcher but Mauch just had to tinker. You can hear the fans booing him.
If California wins that game and Witt finishes the game, the Angels would have had almost a week off that going to New York to take on the Mets in the first two games of that World Series, would Witt have come right back to start Game 1 of that Series? or would it have been Kirk McCaskill starting Game 1?
By doing the pitching change Mauch took the crowd out of the game. His decision to take Jerry Narron out of the game in the bottom of the ninth also took one of his hottest hitters in the Series out of the lineup.
Tell ya what…the Angels May have come up short, but in particular, Brian Downing had himself a helluva series. And he was safe on that steal in the first inning.

After the home run by Baylor, Donnie Moore was brought in with 2 outs in a 5-4 game to face Dave Henderson, 1 out away from the World Series. With the count 0-2, Henderson belted the go ahead home run to put Boston up 6-5. The Angels tie the game in the 9th, but the Red Sox go on to win and forces the series back to Boston. They win Game 6, and massacre the Angels 8-1 in Game 7 to go to the World Series. After being so close, 1 strike away from victory, the Angels go home empty handed. Just days later, the Red Sox felt the same hurt. And Bill Buckner felt it above them all.

That stolen base attempt by Downing being called out, he was safe by a mile. Wasn’t even close. I’ve watched a lot of old school baseball clips pre replay challenge and there are sooo many bad calls by umpires. Not to mention that ridiculous outside corner strike call umps would give pitchers back in the day. Some of the “outside corner” strikes Ive seen that they used to be call strikes makes me laugh out loud. They weren’t even close to being strikes.
Al Michaels is a very underrated baseball announcer. What a great job he did on this game!

Orange County, California in the 1980s was literally paradise on earth. Man, I miss the country when I watch this clip.

Watching this in 2021

He messed up in Boston and got a runner tagged out at third. The runner was furious and laid into him right on the field.
That stolen base attempt by Downing being called out, he was safe by a mile. Wasn’t even close. I’ve watched a lot of old school baseball clips pre replay challenge and there are sooo many bad calls by umpires. Not to mention that ridiculous outside corner strike call umps would give pitchers back in the day. Some of the “outside corner” strikes Ive seen that they used to be call strikes makes me laugh out loud. They weren’t even close to being strikes.
