My brother said for years that this was the greatest game ever played. He was 14 yrs older. I finally saw it on ESPN Classic in the 00's. I think it's right up there with the 1986 WS for drama. This game definitely ranks among the absolute best I've ever seen. RIP Johnny.

And the plane ride back to New York after that game is what urban legend is made of. I hear that they really celebrated on that flight. A continuation of the post game locker room celebration in Houston, on that flight, all the way back home.

    still F'n hurts damn it.
what also really made me mad was that most of the series games started around 2 in the afternoon.
WTF, I would be sitting in school and the only thing I could think about was the game that I was missing.
My mother would pick me up and the I would immediately ask who's winning . I then sat on the couch my mom
was an even bigger baseball fan than I was. So the game was already on. Even though the Astros won a world
series in 2017 this will always be MY team. The Oiler Buffalo game hurt almost as much as this one.

I was an 8-year-old huge Mets fan. Some younger kid was over at my house during the game and wanted to play with me. I kept saying, "sure kid, the game is almost over." After about 100 times of saying that he finally gave up and went home. What a game!

I was in the Astrodome in July and watched the Astros and Mets play a 16 inning marathon that year, 1986. Astros came out on top tht night. we didn't leave the stadium until after 1 am. Little did I know it was a prelude to a 16 inning NLCS all-time classic. Those '86 Astros were special. Phil Garner, Kevin Bass. Jose Cruz. Nolan Ryan. Those '86 Mets were amazing. Dykstra and Backman were on base constantly. Two of the best National League teams ever. What would a Game 7 have been like?

I took time off from work to watch this on TV. I remember pounding the floor and yelling Mookie's name when he got the RBI. Knepper had shut out the Mets in the regular season. The Astros played a great series and could certainly hold their heads high after this one. One of the last true clean baseball season before Canseco, McGuire and the rest of them started using PED's

On this day in 1986, the New York Mets beat the Houston Astros 7-6 in 16 innings to win their 1st National League pennant since 1973 after Jesse Orosco struck out Kevin Bass for the final out and advanced to the 1986 World Series against the Boston Red Sox.
