- On August 7th 1982 Jim Rice climbs into the Fenway Park stands from the dugout to assist a young boy who had just been hit in the head by a savage line drive foul off the bat of Dave Stapleton. The Red Sox slugger's quick response of picking up the four-year old boy and running through the dugout to a waiting ambulance is credited with possibly saving the child's life. I am and have been a Yankee fan most, if not all of my life. I saw Jim Rice play and rooted against him. One of my memories from being at one of my first Yankee games was Jim Rice hitting a ball into Death Valley, in July 1979, trying for an inside the park HR, and getting thrown out at home by Bucky Dent. I cheered loudly. My cheers that day say nothing compared to the volumes Jim Rice's actions said on the day he saved Jonathan Keane. genegeneish words are both correct AND perhaps an understatement. Jim Rice showed himself to be a REAL MAN that day. Anyone ever talks about toxic masculinity in your presence, this video is a perfect rebuttal. This is what real masculinity looks like.
@@danmc7815 My father jumped into Darby creek Pa. to save a drowning man. There was no hesitation on his part. Jim Rice exhibited the way a man behaves under stress. He did not hesitate.
I could just imagine being the helpless dad, and looking up to see that glorious mustache telling you "I got this"

I was 10 when this was on TV, and I remember my mom crying seeing this. Jim Rice saved that child’s life, and was the guardian angel that child needed that day.

After realizing that the family was of modest means Jim went down to the billing office at the hospital and told them to send all the bills to him. I find that remarkable. Not only did he have the quick thinking to jump into the stands realizing that the medical staff would've never make it in time, he went straight to the team medical room.

Jim Rice.. if you're out there please know that you are the embodiment of class. I grew up watching you play and even though I lived in Chicago you were up there amongst my favourite players. Your heroics on this day confirm the kind of man I always hoped you were.
And just yesterday I purchased a red Jim Rice autographed Sox cap in an acrylic Fenway Park case. My new favorite piece.
When faced with circumstances that call for action or require a selfless act to help total strangers - we see who we really are. Jim Rice, clearly, is a great man.
The more we learn about how serious head injuries can be the more important what Rice did was.

NOT because he had legendary power with his bat and was an amazing player in his time ... but because he SAVED a child's very LIFE with his selfless quick reaction .. and carried off Jerry Remy when he was injured ..and on and on ... Seeing him play at Fenway Park in 1982 with my father and brother was one of the greatest moment of my life ... thank you Jim for all you did for the sport you love and for always being a class act

I was 3 years old and fumbled down the bleacher stairs at a school football game. Was bleeding quite a bit. (I was young, but, still can remember the pain.) The football coach hopped over, grabbed me, and took me to a medic in less than 30 seconds. -Men like this are angels on earth.
oh man i don't have kids yet but im crying like a baby after watching this. that kid could have been me or one of my brothers. we were at the dugout all the time to see jim and yaz and all the players from the era. I remember sticking my 8 year old head into the dugout before the games and hold out baseballs for them to sign.. usually my dad grabbed us before we could get one but jim rice always said hi and he even high fived me once. I'll never forget that. what a great man! great memories

God Bless Jim Rice. Sports stars are commonly mistakenly called heroes. This is an example of a real hero, a man stepping up with no hesitation and saving a child's life.

My very first Red Sox game was on August 29, 1977 against the Oakland A's. Jim Ed hit 3 HR's in that game (1 in the net / 2 on Lansdowne St). In typical 1970's Red Sox fashion, they lost 8-7. I think we all know If JER never breaks his arm in 75, Red Sox Win that WS. JER was and will always be my favorite red sox.

Growing up in MASS Jim Rice was my favorite player. More so now.
Jim Ed was ALWAYS my favorite from the moment I came into this world. He was special in a time of racial tension in Boston. A hero in my book. When I was in H.S. Baseball I wore #14. My son wore #14 when he playes too. I think I have a man crush on the dude!

Jim Rice is and was and will always be one of the greats to play the game, incidents like this or carrying Remy off the field are just indicative of the character that this man possess. Baseball is a game, a sport, but when an event calls for it Jim put the game aside and reached out in compassion, love and concern.
Back then we didn't have 50 different camera angles and 30,000 social media posts... this somewhat austere - by - comparison - presentation seems much more powerful with its thoughtful editing, from-the-heart interviews, and gentle score...Great telling of a Great Story
A legend in so many ways
The incredible situational awareness on display. The natural impulse for many people would be to wait for the EMT’s at the stadium to get to the boy, but that most likely would have taken too long. Mr. Rice knew where there was a doctor much closer and reacted without hesitation. I only pray I would have such clear and decisive thinking if - heaven forbid- ever faced with a similar situation.

I'm a long-time Yankee fan but Jim Rice and Freddie Lynn were my alternate universe heroes. Both are such classy guys and in this instance, Jim reacted in such a way that is so consistent with his upstanding, humanitarian personality. By the way, he had the sweetest short, compact stroke ever!!!!!! About time he was inducted into the Hall!!!!
Jim Rice got a lot of bad press for being surly,but the way he didn't hesitate may have saved that little boys life,and for that,he will always be an ALL-STAR to me.....

Being born and raised in the game Jim Rice was one of my greats growing up when I was 16 I was at a game in Arlington and him and Dwight Evans come strolling through the stands centerfield and they were just the nicest guys ever I'll never forget it ever and I'm 51 now and they were just the nicest fellas there wasn't a whole lot of people there and but they stopped and talk to everybody signed every autograph man what a day

I've never heard of Jim Rice or this incident before today, but as soon as a I read the story I had nothing but instant respect and admiration for Mr. Rice. Knowing that medical personnel coming from outside the stadium would take too long, Rice did the right thing and the Sox's medical crew were the first to treat him.
