    I will never forget that World Series in 1986, watching it as a 10-year old kid. The game should never have got to that point, the Red Sox bullpen couldn’t close the door. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t Buckner usually subbed for late in games defensively? I applaud Bill for being willing to show grace and make this appearance after all he had been through.

    That's great to see that they put that moment behind them after all of those years. He was a great player, a hof player and that error didn't cost them the championship in'86. There was a multitude of errors in that game but he was made the scapegoat quite unfairly. But as I said the class shown by the Red Sox organisation and the fans that day was brilliant and you could see how much it meant to him. Well done bill. it was a long time coming but you deserved that standing ovation

      I've ALWAYS laid the lion's share of blame for that Series loss on manager John McNamara. He had opportunities to make changes and let his team regroup in Games 6 and 7, and he didn't do it because he was too sentimental and caught up in the moment. Buckner was just the convenient face of that choke for the criminal harassers that swirled around him afterward. That said, good on the team and the fans for closing that wound for good before he passed.

    • @joeyblowey3460
      @joeyblowey3460 9 років тому +2

      Shouldn't blamed any single person. The way that game collapsed was a complete team effort to blow it. McNamara, the bullpen, Buckner, they all contributed to blowing it. Boston seems to have let it go. It's easy to that since they've won a few World Series over the last decade.

    • @franknberry6397
      @franknberry6397 6 років тому

      Lava1964 I blame McNamara for not dropping him further down in batting order. His ankles were causing him to be a liability at the plate. Spike Owens, Barret & Boggs would all get on base and he'd come up to bat and hit into a double play and Jim Rice would be a lead off hitter with no one on base. Buckner was a difficult guy to manage and probably would've given McNamara a hard time being dropped down in the order.

      We're baseball fans first, fans of our teams second.
      What was really nice about this, the introduction was so thoughtfully written. Wikipedia says the ovation was four minutes, and you can see MLB cut the video! It could have even been better.

    I am not trying to say this isn't a great moment, but what people don't remember is Buckner got a standing ovation the day of his return to the Red Sox in 1990.

    I always hated the red sux and I laughed my ass off when that ball went between his legs, but he didn't deserve to be treated like he was after that happened. There was a wild pitch, a hit batter, and other mistakes in that inning also.

      Tony Hlavinka So was Buckner booed on Opening Day at Fenway in 1987?
      No, he received a standing ovation. And he got another one when he came back to the Red Sox in 1990.

    They say they forgive him. Forgive him for what, it's not like he wanted to make the error. If they wanted to win the world series they would have finished it in game 6 back in 86'

    • @DrSanto91

      1015Eelvis Or by sweeping the mets since they had a 2-0 lead in the world series, and game 7 for giving up a 3-0 lead, and two pitchers and macnamara they were the ones who clear were the scapegoats. Overall that 1986 world series should have not gone back to shea Stadium, since they went back to fenway, and choked game 3 and 4, and all they had to was win two of the games at fenway.

      +billny33 He's a standup guy, who never deserved the vitriol that he received. Some people put a very unhealthy level of importance on sports. I love my Sox, and I was as frustrated as anyone when that game ended the way it did. The Buckner error was the straw that broke the camel's back, in what will always be remembered as the worst inning in Red Sox history.
