I love how Valve only reacts when something harmless is happening, but they completely ignore the cries of the fans for a new update and bug fixes. Such a shame.
background01 has all these models to help with load times. The game loads all the models once you boot up the game so you don't have to do it once you join a server. They ended up removing it because I think it ironically increased load times for the game itself.
That outro music is godly. I barely even play TF2 anymore yet I watch a lot of the TF2 content creators and now, I have found another one to watch :) Thanks man for the laughs and keep up the great content.
It's so funny to see people who started playing late looking at things the way they were and going "wait, we can't even do THAT?" Yup, can't pick up buildings, can't airblast, can't do much outside of your "intended" way to play. And we liked it because we never thought about those improvements. Not saying I somehow prefer not having the ability to do those things, just that the game you play today was an almost completely different beast when it came out. Not necessarily bad for being more bare-bones, just different.
I played on the PS3 for my first few years (and it never got updated) so I also remember the Spy not being able to reload his stock watch with metal, and the Demoman had 6 pills in his launcher (which makes sense, given the model clearly has 6 chambers, but was horrible for spam I guess?)
In 2012 I hadn’t ever owned a pc before, so I got a Xbox 360 as a gift and I also got the orange box with it. I was stuck with that until now. When I finally got a pc, I was like: WHATTTTTT!!! I didn’t know about so much, I mean, I knew the pc version had some better stuff on there, but I only scratched the surface of what pc was like. I love it.
Hydro sucks man, I've been playing since Beta- it's a fucking horrible stalemate fest. The entryways to the cap points are so fucking crowded and narrow and prone to stalemates. Ask anyone who was around back when it was in rotation.
I actually like the old menu, the artwork is really neat - sort of a relic from a bygone era when there was still a bit of seriousness under the silliness.
0:33 Is this a *TINY DESK ENGINEER* you own ? I've bought the Christmas edition special limited serie with their Dispenser, they're really useless I know but they're tiny and they performs the world's best dances move, so that's worth it. Good to know you're also a TinyDesk customer like me.
background01 was made not only to be a 3D background for TF2 before they changed it to 2D last second, but it actually forces the engine to cache all the models used in normal TF2 gameplay before loading into your first map. I can only assume that the mappers did this because the coders were too lazy to write special code to keep that stuff loaded normally.
I still play on PS3 once in a while. Yeah, plenty of people online even there, but it's weird to see the game from Day 1 compared to on PC where I can access so many fun custom maps, but it is nice to play as intended. Though tbh I don't like the way aiming feels on that version which might explain why gamepad support is so wonky.
Just imagine if TF2 was released like it was in 2007 or the how it currently is on the console ports and Valve decided to never touch TF2 again after that. I’m not sure where I and many other TF2 UA-camrs would be if this game didn’t get updated. Also, did you manage to make Hydro a good and interesting map to play?!
Good old days when there were little items but they were rare and important. Steam trade wasn't there and we had real shit with metals and hat ohh feels...
Background maps were quite common across all source games, From Portal to Day of defeat, all of the older source games usually feature live backgrounds. I actually don't understand why they got rid of it for TF2, if you loaded a few bot's in a small mock up map, you could have an interesting live background, kinda like the Demo files that would play in the menu of original Doom. And i guess that was originally the idea, since the background maps in TF2 are actually just cut out from the original maps. The reason behind the character models and weapons i presume is to cut down on loading time, since if the model is already present in the map, the engine doesn't have to load it again, and can just pull it from memory. That also kinda correlates to the common bug where you can see random hats spawning on some maps.
1:00 this actually happens on the main dustbowl map as well if you play on the xbox 360 version and glitch above the map with an engineer/medic dart boost combo.
Im so glad to see others do this too: 0:18 What a strange nostalgia from the old days of Source games. XD I'd do this in other games too, like Hitman 2016, crotch behind something and you can make the character you play as move back and forth in a funny way, doing it fast. Love this kind of silly stuff in games.
Play a class that isn't sniper or spy at which you're decent at and you should be OK EDIT: It's possible that one day bots might be the only option. Hopefully this day never comes before TF3.

Little known fact you can use "map_background" command in the console to put a live map in the background for the main menu, complete with soundscapes, it can actually be used on any map, the game seems to pick an "info_observer_point" for the camera angle (the neutral, fixed camera angles when you're in spectator mode) I actually like how it looks on the main menu, though it takes a little bit to load because you're loading the whole map.
