    My mother was a 5th grade teacher and she noticed that one of her students had to be excused a lot to urinate and get a drink of water. She was concerned for him and sent a note home to his parents concerning this. Well, at first the father resented the note but later on came to see my mother in her classroom. He wanted to personally thank her for her for bringing this to their attention.The boy was taken for a checkup and was found to have diabetes.

    When I was 16 a junior in high school, it was really hard to concentrate because all I could think about was finding something to drink and going to the bathroom. I also dropped down to 110 pounds, I was really underweight. I ended up in the ER and after being accused of using drugs, LOL. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I was in the ICU for a couple of days and spent a week after that in the hospital. Thank you for posting this because it is so true, better to get it early than when they have gone into keto acidosis like me.

    He is so right. My son started out with flu. And wasn't getting better after 2 weeks and 4 doctor visits. When he started the bedwetting I knew something was terribly wrong. I took him back to pediatrics doctor. Explain to her what was continuing to go on. She ran some test. She ran back into room and had me transport my son to Children's Hospital. His BG was over 600 and ketones levels over 2000. My son almost died if I wouldn't have been persistent about something was wrong with him. He was in hospital for like 6 days and this road has been tough. Dealing with low and high BGs. I pray that a cure is found for T1D soon. It is soooo expensive and stressful. For any parent who child become a Type 1 Diabetic.The CGM and insulin pump would be your best friend.

    Why, WHY do they take your temperature, weigh you and check your blood pressure at every doctor visit but don't do a finger-stick A1c check or even a blood glucose check? This would have saved me from A LOT of torment and complications when I was diagnosed.

    My son was diagnosed at 7 with type 1 diabetes. I noticed he was getting up at night to go to the bathroom. He also complained about his heart hurting, which I never understood until later. We caught it early enough so his blood sugar wasn’t as high as others. He went in the hospital for a week and came home a completely different kid. He is now 21yrs old and he doesn’t remember life before diabetes

      Katie Williams , since your son has T1D, I highly encourage you to read the book "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution" by Dr. Richard Bernstein, MD. He was diagnosed with T1D in about 1947 when he was about 12-years-old.
      He followed the American Diabetes Association's eating instructions for 20 years and got metabolic syndrome diseases because that.
      Then over a period of 12 months, he used his engineering degree and a blood glucose meter to figure out how to stabilize his blood glucose and was able to reverse all but 3 metabolic syndrome disease symptoms. He couldn't reverse those 3 because the damage had gone on too long.
      Then, Bernstein went to med school and became an MD. Dr. Bernstein specializes in T1D and T2D, and he is still practicing in his 80s.
      He tells his patients to eat no more than 30 grams of carbs per day. His book tells the details of how to do it.

She got very sick with the flu last winter and vomited several times. It scared her so bad that she doesn’t wanna eat much anymore. I hope she’s ok. We’re so worried about her.

    Thank you for making this video. More pediatricians should discuss this information with their patient’s parents.
    In 2004 I took my nearly four year old son to his pediatrician for a checkup.
    His doctor checked for diabetes and the usual blood checks. The results came back that his health was fine. As it turned out my son was not alright. He started eating and drinking everything in sight. He started really wetting the bed. He would urinate so much that even the quilt would be soaked. I had no idea that these were the symptoms of diabetes. I called his pediatrician and he thought my son just had a virus. He said not to worry because Ben was drinking and keeping hydrated. Then 2 days later on Ben’s 4th birthday I found him unconscious in his bed. My husband and I rushed him to the ER. We were shocked to learn that he had Type 1 diabetes. His blood sugar was 1380. It’s a miracle that he is alive today.

    In one study, researchers divided pregnant women into several groups and review the women’s vitamin D intake. Several years later, the children born to the women who supplemented with vitamin D had fewer cases of Type 1 diabetes.3 In a follow-up study, children them-selves were given 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily starting at age 1. The researchers found that the children’s risk of Type 1 diabetes dropped by 80 percent.

    Are there any known things, if followed, that might lower a child’s risk of ever developing T1D?

    • @KenDBerryMD
      @KenDBerryMD  5 років тому +5

      Keeping sugars, grains, soft drinks & fruit juices to a minimum will decrease the odds of your child developing T2D. As a mom, getting at least 5000 IU of Vitamin D3 during pregnancy and 6.400 IU while breastfeeding has been shown to decrease the risk of your child developing T1D.

    • @itfryguy
      @itfryguy 5 років тому +1

      T1D is caused by an autoimmune response, where the body attacks and kills the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. There is research being done to determine the genes involved, and what causes the autoimmune response. There are also trials being done that show promise in slowing the death of the insulin producing cells. But there is no known prevention, because the cause is not fully understood. T1D is NOT caused by something A) that you as a parent did B) that the child did
      C) that an adult did to themselves.

      @@itfryguy Genes don't happen by themselves, environment has to happen to switch them on (except in some specific known genetic diseases). Plenty of people who have the bracca gene don't get breast cancer, for example. You don't understand genes, perhaps do some wider reading.

    Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) can be diagnosed before ketoacidosis or a trip to the emergency room:
    Read the book "Diabetes Epidemic and You" by Dr. Joseph Kraft, MD, MS, FCAP. An annual insulin assay test of at least 2 hours can tell if the child has low blood insulin (T1D) or high blood insulin (T2D).
