I am 63 yrs. old. I’ve been hypoglycemic since age 23(first severe attack). Others in my family, mother sister and brother as well as maternal grandmother were diabetic. I’ve had such severe sudden drops where I find it difficult to breath, I break out in a full body sweat, I shake and my vision begins to close down. Essentially my body goes into shock. I don’t take any meds but do keep glucose tabs or juice of some kind with me at all times. I’ve found staying away from dense carbs, refined sugars and starches along with keeping my natural sugars down keeps me from having severe drops. My blood sugar runs around 55 when tested over the years though did test at 70 in one year. Hypoglycemia can be serious and I’m happy to see this addressed here.
One of the major symptoms of low blood sugar is getting the 'shakes'. A kind of trembling that's quite unpleasant but goes when you eat something. Following this Doc's plan of eating more veggies and cutting out sugar is helping me tremendously.
I've known I am hypoglycemic since I was 7 years old. I fainted during a soccer game after eating pancakes for breakfast, and my mom recognized my symptoms immediately (she herself is hypoglycemic). She took me to the doctor to get blood tested as soon as she could, and we confirmed I was hypoglycemic. I rarely ate sugar growing up (the pancakes were for a special occasion) and was raised on a low carb, high protein diet. I was under the impression I was born this way. My worst episodes of hypoglycemia always occurred if I went too long without eating (I've fainted from this at least 4 times in my life). Eating high amounts of sugar definitely makes me feel awful, but going long periods of time without eating has always been more concerning to me. I guess my reason for writing is 1. Are you sure people develop chronic hypoglycemia from diet alone? and 2. If I'm already low carb and high protein, what else can I do to feel better/not feel faint just because I haven't eaten in a few hours?
Type 2 Diabetic, taking Glympride. A1C levels 6.5. Starting passing out 3 times a week. Doctirs treated me for Epilepsy...Neurologists saw nothing related. I have to tell you that your videos have changed my life I have started to eat better and feel better thank you so much. Last week I had a blood sugar crash so bad I was in shock but I kept eating sugar and it got worse finally I drink water and took a couple salt pills and I felt better but I was weak the whole day I had to take off work and then I get on UA-cam and your video popped up and I've been watching it almost every single thing about low blood sugar hypoglycemia and doing exactly what you're saying and it's working good job Doc
THANK YOU!! You answered a question I have had for 17 years and no doctor has been able to answer! "Why does my blood sugar tank out of the blue" I ate TONS of sugar as a kid, teen and young adult. I'm now doing better at keeping my sugar intake down and doing things to ward off insulin resistance and have seen an improvement! 😊 I'm still not where I need to be, but I'm getting there! I'm on the right path and healing my body!

After eating 7-10 cups of vegetables a day for 2 weeks, the pain from my fibromyalgia and leaky gut was horrible to the point where I was bedridden. After some investigation, I found that oxalates were the cause. I was eating large amounts of spinach and some kale and was very pleased that my sugar cravings went away. However, I have been trying to figure out a low oxalate diet without compromising the progress I made with the sugar cravings. Can you please share your expertise regarding this phenomenon and diet. Thank you for taking the time to provide these well informed videos.
eat 600 gms of organic cucumber raw with skin and drink lemon juice daily before bed probably one hour prior to sleep. Spinach and kale is just bullshit. You really dont need it. Infact you dont need any of the vegetables. Make it simple, just increase cucumber intake, you will get almost "ALL THE MINERALS" Glycemic index is very low for cucumber and it has intestine friendly fibres to built up healthy bacteria. Liver loves cucumber too Cucumber has very little sugar which is acceptable in a keto diet
I think I can conclude that I got Hypoglemia, not because of eating sugar, but because of emotional stress. Or it's because I didn't process fats well; What Patricia Reed is refering too.
I've always had low blood sugar but this week I had 4 very intense panic attacks where I completely lost function and couldn't speak or move. Luckily, my wife was near me when it happened and gave me some OJ. I was literally peeing every 10-20 minutes, had the shakes, chills, couldn't breathe. I had a baby 2 weeks ago and lack of sleep plus barely eating anything triggered something. My wife had to take of everything yesterday with feediny/changing baby plus the dog and cats. I had to eat frequent small meals and a ton of oj/water. I slept 12 hours straight and feel much better now. Still think I need to get myself checked out so have an appt 2days from now.
Thanks for the video. Very good explanation. Only thing is lot of people don't know that when you are talking about sugar, you are talking about carbs too.
Well, to all the people who say you cant correct duabetes with diet. My dad was diagnosed with diabetes and his doctor wanted him to start on Insulin. My dad is a doctor himself and he got so scared of this. So, he started a diet, lost a lot of weight, his blood sugar got normal, he never needed Insuline!!! Good luck!
Well tendency toward hypoglycemia is genetic, I am at leased the third generation with it, I eat a low carb diet and have for years since I have had hypoglycemia since the age of 4. I am on the keto diet now because I am determined to be the first generation to prevent it from becoming diabetes. 36 years old now and no diabetes yet, symptoms have decreased since getting off the vegan diet and started consuming more fats and protein.
My daughter got dka age 16 and is type one. It’s autoimmune and her pancreas is dead. Nothing to do with her diet…. Which has always been good and healthy.
That's great! My mom has hypoglecimia and I read a book about hypoglecimia that mentioned the kenogenic diet how did you get into it? And how was the process? Bc I really want my mom to try it
I used to be a borderline diabetic, then I had gastric bypass at the time I was 275. Now I am 160, eat a lot (not bad foods), but I have hypoglycemia. The one day I was at the lab with 56. I didn't feel sickly. I wonder how low I am when I have a shaky and weak spell.
I was always thinking the my diet was excellent until I watched your videos I was wrong all the time !! Thanks Dr Berg since I found your videos I lost 20 pounds and keep off 💙💙
My brother was diagnosed at age 13 with t1 diabetes. We didn't eat sweets or drink sugary drinks growing up. So if it's not genetics what could have caused my brothers t1 diabetes? Thanks Dr. Berg.
A small point I wish to mention - at round 2:22 ". . . turning your protein into sugar . . This phrase is confusing, not clear enough. It's that the body breaks down protein (muscles) in the body which releases a small amount of sugar. I've heard this phrase used by others - protein does not become sugar. Love your videos, I'm a great fan of yours. You speak such truths, so refreshing and reassuring. Thank you so much for sharing this information with us.
The healthy diet helps me but it does nothing for an attack, which I often get as I'm waking up. A small amount of sugar is the only thing that snaps me out of the shakes, rapid heartbeat, pins and needles, and vomiting and spinning head. (I suck on a dumdum candy for a few minutes after I get up though I never get cravings for sweets at all) I've always stayed away from sugar and have always eaten healthy, high protein and healthy carbs. No idea what is at play behind my hypoglycemia beside the fact that it runs in our family. It is not fun when you've got it like I do... 😢
I have had hypo since I was very young (primary school) however I did not eat much sugar, my mom would not let me eat much junk food and never ever sugary drinks, only water to drink! (my brother would sneak in allllll the sugar yet he is not hypo). But I do have Misophonia which causes a very intense fight or flight response in me sometimes several times a day. Could this physical and emotional stress from the Misophonia repeatedly since a toddler be what caused my hypo from such a young age despite a healthy diet? I am now low carb and it has helped so tremendously, I went from my blood sugar dropping several times a day to basically not at all.
Could you do a video on elevated blood glucose while on a LCHF ketogenic diet? Most people see a drop in FBG but there are people who despite low carbs and moderate protein, still end up with high FBG to the point of pre-diabetes. Wondering what's going on there. Thanks for all you really informative videos.
It isn't just the eating. It's because of aging and hereditary too despite the victim-blaming he does in this video. He's right about eliminating sugar, most carbs, and processed fats. But he's wrong about diabetes being a lifestyle disease only.
Also I already suffer heart palpitations, was put on metoprolol, my job required me to hustle and be on my feet all day, did not react good to this medication. they took me off of it and me not to stress out and eat a healthy diet and that was it. my feet get tingly, clammy, and really cold even if it's warm or hot out, I also have a hard time exercising daily because if the chronic exhaustion.
So I grew up a healthy person. I started getting thyroid issues and also know I couldn’t go several hours without eating. Now I can’t go 3-4 hours without eating. I ate horribly growing up and drank A LOT of alcohol.
So hypoglycemia is like a sugar withdrawal symptom, just like any other addictions do. For example if a person addicted to smoking and they suddenly stop smoking, they experience the same thing. Shakiness, irritability, worse fever. Sugar is an addiction.
It’s hard giving up that morning Frappuccino. Lol. I do experience exactly what you’re saying. The blood sugar crash 2 to 3 hours after. I start having all the symptoms of low blood sugar and I have to scramble to get something to eat ,so yeah we do it to ourselves. 😬
I was diagnosed this past Monday with hypoglycemia, I also run alot, I love running, but with this hypoglycemia problem I have been tired. my sugar drops super low, even after I eat my sugar will drop. I have gained 6lbs, and all I do is drink orange juice, sugar gel.. and I hate sugary foods, drinks.. but I do drink alcohol on occasion.. I just want help on fixing this hypoglycemia problem. my Dr said the same thing as, drink orange juice, heavy heavy breakfast.. Ugh it's so frustrating
I was hospital and found out i had low blood sugar to 70 by the time i got to E.R.. and having Numbness and tinglinging in my left face and lower body so it was a stroke code but good thing it was ruled out for stroke... but it was causes by Aura Migraine Severe Headache... which has the same symptoms of having a stroke code...
My low blood sugar problems is due to my PIT tumor. MY values or normal even though i get real dizzy and low blood sugarish. I am not diabetic. I did acupuncture, one treatment and it messed me up so bad and now i am just getting over that.
I've battled with type 2 diabetes for a long time till I discovered an efficient natural treatment and finally stopped it within a few weeks. It made my doctor stunned!
yes. because the drops are usually caused by eating sugar . u hike then it drops. when u get low blood sugar, u have nothing else to have , of course you read for that candy bar but dont do it often . make sure you are eating protein rich snacks like cheese
I remember when I ate a lot of starch and carbs. knocked me out into a so called sugar coma. woke up unable to move and my whole body was feeling pins and needles and very heavy and cold. my parents were about to call 911 because they couldn't wake me up. dam hypoglyceia. tried to kill me.
I decided to try ketogenic diet about 10 days ago, I was going great guns feeling great until last night when....... I think I went hypoglycemic , I felt like crap !!!! I ended up having a biscuit with some tea with a little sugar and it seemed to wear off.
Can I be low on sugar because I only drink water? I eat healthy, but I refuse to eat candy or sodas. I eat relatively healthy and workout. I thought I was hypoglycemic because I became depressed, mood swings, anxious, and blurred vision. Should I start drinking soda more often?
p.s. am not a confirmed diabetic. Maybe at the most I am in a pre-diabetic stage. But I have bouts of hypoglycemia today though not severe. My rather grave attack was the first time I experienced low sugar. I just felt it and drank coke and got good relief. Am also slim-built down from a medium-built before. May I ask if there is such a thing as blood sugar balancer?
How long until one starts feeling better with this diet? If I feel like I’m a bit dizzy even though I’ve been doing this diet for a couple of days should I still stay away from sugar?
In one video, he said that the first three days tend to be the hardest. Though I see that you posted the three years ago, so I’m sure you got will pass that lol.

I've been blacking out since 1982, no doctor figured it out, I had one doctor tell me I had pituitary gland failure, But I don't I've been blacking out from low blood sugar since 1982, I had what felt like a brain seizure in 2018 then this doctor started treating me for pituitary gland failure, he put me on steroids and I gained 30 lb and it's been so hard for me to get rid of it, But now I have a new endocrinologist who's reversing it, But when I finally get hungry it's like I shake I get irritable, so I've been trying to eat a lot of fish. And in my twenties my face was flushing, I was constantly exhausted, And I've been waiting for yours for a doctor to figure it out, The funny thing is I I'm the one who figured it out.
Think I might have that because I was at 6 flags and I started feeling dizzy and nauseous and really thirsty and then I puked and almost passed out so my mom brought me to the first aid place at 6 flags and they tested my blood. My blood sugar was at 5 when it's suppose to be at at least 80 and they told me I had to lay down and eat sugar and that if it got down to 4 then I would have to go to the hospital. I never went to the hospital and something that big hasn't happened since but I do still get dizzy and light headed if I don't have enough sugar or too much.
quite drinking alcohol a month ago, suddenly started having lot of problems (sweating, heart rate increase, fatigue, depression, anxiety, etc) fucking worried, shit sucks and i think i have this, is it curable?
When I was taking 200ml sugarcane juice/serup after meal, it was causing head ache. When I reversed order like taking sugar cane juice before meal, i got no problem of head ache. Is the first order causing hypoglycemic situation? Update: Just found it to be hypoglycemic from one of your videos named "intermittent fasting and hypo glycaemia" thanks!!!
hypoglycenia from, adrenal stress.. happens when you get older. Great this is what I am looking for. So what do I do when it happens. What do I do at 3am when I cant sleep because of this. I am googling how to normalize blood sugar at 3 am without eating and all I get is people telling me to eat a carb
Dr Berg. Does hypoglycemia has relation with vitamin d deficiency. If yes can you please throw somelight on the same. I have vitamin d of 9.5. I am experiancing the hypoglycemia since a week.
I'm having headache and feeling of nauseous for more than a week, it get worsen in bright light and sound.. Everything I eat turns into gas and have burping and farting... can u help me😢
does an extremely fast metabolism causes hypoglycemia? I suffered an early burnout at the gym because my metabolism was too fast and a had some of these symptoms
Sugar is poison.. If you eat poison wat do you expect.. Am a sugar addict from childhood. I had unloving parents n that's were I found my happiness in a chocolate bar n candies.. I would need to be locked up in a cell to overcome this addiction. Every bad emotion and am reaching for sugar.. Please God help me n others who can relate
I eat less sugar than normal people my age just because I dislike it however when my blood sugar goes low I have to drink juice as well as eat a food with fat or simple carbs to keep it from dropping
i had a worm in my intenstine, i consulted a doctor he gave me a tablet after taking it the worm died but i felt weaker mentally and i experienced a memory loss and i was unable to form sentences did simple grammatical mistakes, i started getting confused between would and could i forget where to use the and a these simple things i was unable to do. will you tell me that it was a brain damage because of low sugar as that tablet which i ate absorbed all the sugar for killing that worm. is that the case sir?
When I was anorexic, I had really low blood sugar to the point that I blacked out. The paramedics came and tested my blood sugar and said my blood sugar was 43..
That’s pretty low! I guess when you don’t have diabetes you are less immune to low/ high blood sugar because I can function at 43 enough to get juice or something
At 4:16 are you saying that type 1 diabetes can be caused by diet? And are you also implying that you can cure diabetes? Because type 1 and type 2 diabetes are both incurable. Another thing I'd like to add is that Hypoglycemia is also caused by fasting. Diabetic patients are prone to being hypoglycemic because of the "sugar lowering" effect the insulin they take has. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include weakness, confusion, sweating, anxiety, increased heart rate and can also lead to a loss of consciousness.
Dumisa Nzama Yes I agree both are incurable, manageable but not curable.Kind of pisses me off when someone insinuates that diabetes can be cured especially type 1 both my parents had it and numerous relatives on both sides going back several generations.I manage my type 2 with diet exercise, but I am certainly not what I'd call cured, because symptoms would come roaring back if I gave up being very active and healthy eating habits.
excusesbegone To even suggest that both types "especially type 1" are curable is insulting to people who suffer from diabetes. Both are manageable with a combination of medication, diet and exercise, but quit doing any of these and it comes right back.Just pisses me off every time some jack ass know it all snake oil salesman suggests diabetes is curable.Managable but not curable BIG DIFFERENCE!
Dumisa Nzama Simply put to me once.Being overweight doesn't cause diabetes nor does diet cause diabetes.Actually being type 2 diabetic is what causes someone to be overweight. They (type 2) don't process carbs the same way a non diabetic does.Type 1 diabetics will always be insulin shot dependant. Its a pet peeve of mine when some snake oil salesman even suggest both are curable.
You forgot to mention ravenous. That's how I get and it takes a lot of food to feel satisfied if I wait to eat after my blood sugar gets too low. And btw: where were your parents when you were stuffing a whole bag of Halloween candy down your gullet? Lol...
+Laura Libra That's what happens to me too! If I go too long without eating, especially if I'm physically working, I suddenly get shaky, confusion, grouchy, etc. until I get some protein in my body.
(Update Started adding more protein to my pre exercise carb snack and seems to working better, haven't needed to resort to candy)Sounds like exercise induced hypoglycemia.I get it too.Blood sugar right before exercise 130-140.After 45 minutes of running drops to 40-50!Have to eat 1 piece of peppermint candy or a sunsweet prune and it will go back up to 100 in 10 minutes.
My glucose levels have been around 65 lately. I’ve been doing keto for about 6 months now and just noticed this. I feel hungry ALL. THE. TIME. no dizziness or any of those other symptoms. I don’t know what to do to correct this. Laura Libra

Can malnutrition cause hypo's. If eaten only around 10 individual foods for around 12 years, then nothing for 30 days except water, then for over a year, only two foods due to severe allergies and mast cells disease activation?
Yes I agree those that say diabetes can be cured are truly fooling themselves.Once they go back to bad crappy eating habits symptoms come roaring back.Managed through diet exercise, medication, but definitely not cured. My mom+dad both type 1 and almost every family member on both sides either type 1 or 2.I am type 2 and now suffer from exercise induced hypoglycemia.
Is there such a thing as non diabetic hypoglycemia? I was tested oh.... 4 years ago? maybe more... and I was told I was hypoglycemic. I wasn't given any medicine or a glucose checker. So I never really changed my diet. But I am struggling very much to lose weight. can hypoglycemia play a part in that? How do I stop it?
There is exercise induced hypoglycemia.Due to hard high intensity exercise.I get it and the way I manage it is by eating multiple small snacks/meals about every 2 hours.
I always thought I was hypoglycemic, but when I purchased test strips and tested by blood throughout the day I found it never drops below 167. Why do I get symptoms of hypoglycemia?
I am so confused Dr. Berg. How do you explain those in the HCLF community who are able to control and even reverse their diabetes by eating high starch/sugar foods? Apparently many people with hypo or hyperglycemia have no problems after getting rid of the fat and protein in their diet.
+Rin Nha This is such a good question. I would love for him to address this. I've asked before about how some raw vegans are quite healthy. Of course the ones who are healthy are eating a lot of greens/salad, but not much fat. I think it might depend on the constitution of the individual, but I don't know for sure. I just know for me I am not able to eat low fat because my blood sugar gets all outta whack.
Rin Nha i truly think it all depends on ur own body metabolism. There is no one-size fits all diet in the world for every human being because we have different biology, genetics, etc for every individual so lchf or paleo or vegans... we just need to find which diet suits us throughout our whole life. Its kind of a trial and error thingy. Importantly, we just want to achieve a quality, and improved well-being overall.
+Eric Berg You said something about you had a video on getting the pancreas to function properly again. I was told my immune system destroys my alpha and beta cells, which is in fact insulin and glucagon produced by my pancreas, but why doesn't it destroy the artificial insulin I've been taking for decades?
Exactly, typical of dogmatic medical theories in bed with big pharma, lol. Its all wrong. I read somewhere people reversing Diabetes Type 1, research, keep informed.
sometimes I drink 4 to 5 energy drinks a day I cant function without at least one sometimes if I buy a 6 pack I cant help myself the whole pack can easily get drunk im not an alchy or anything like that I am just addicted to these sugar drinks and cant help it if I don't have one I feel awful whats wrong with me :( some days I can feel shakey and tired than other days but for the past month iv had loads of tummy problems lately I keep getting chills and feeling dizzy in the stomache not the head but bn getting 4 headaches that are mild in past few days doctors are useless they just blame everything on stress including my pain in my ankles they say its stress n im thinking BULLSHIT..
If it scares you, you could be having a panick attack. I have bad anxiety when my blood sugar is low because the symptoms scare me, chest pain is a symptom of anxiety. Just a thought

Thanks for the video. Very good explanation. Only thing is lot of people don't know that when you are talking about sugar, you are talking about carbs too.
Been having the shakes sometimes. I also don't eat sugar a lot, very informative video thank you.
Good luck!
Thank you for another concise and well-explained video.
Stopping sugar didn't do anything for my hypoglycemia. What helped is the Ketogenic diet!
SomberHeart84 ....so do you still have symptoms? or are you better know?.. i have it as well.

Thank you! I love your videos! Very comprehensive.
Wonderful video as usual.💪
Loved the video! Thanks for sharing.
As always, thank you for posting your videos. A world of knowledge,
Could you do a video on elevated blood glucose while on a LCHF ketogenic diet?

Dumisa Nzama BOTH are curable......UA-cam Dr Gabriel Cousins
excusesbegone To even suggest that both types "especially type 1" are curable is insulting to people who suffer from diabetes.

Whats HCLF community?
Something does not add up here
