Once again I bring up Soul Sacrifice. In the beginning, I saw a copy of the game at a local shop. But I wouldn't explore further until much later, when I got a Vita I could download the demo on. I wasn't too crazy about the dark setting (particularly the bugs crawling around the main menu). But I couldn't stop playing soon after and of course, this is would get me to try other Monster Hunter clones.

I'm the opposite. Loved Toukiden, which was my first Monster Hunter like. I tried & hated Soul Sacrifice, and still hated it when I gave it a second chance with Delta. To me the controls suck and the combat isn't as satisfying as Toukiden or FreedomWars

Death Mark and NG are incredible games that I've had the pleasure of playing very recently.
The backstories behind the Spirits in both games are harrowing...not for the easily upset.
I was blown away by the ending to NG...
I tried Danganronpa and didn't enjoy it...despite loving the Zero Escape series to death.
I'm going to try it again someday.
As for games I wasn't expecting to like...it's hard to say.
Nuclear Throne is one I didn't think I'd enjoy at all, but it's pretty fun. I still suck at it though.

Resistance: Burning Skies was one I didn't think I'd like. The mediocre to bad reviews kept me away from it. Then gamestop had it a used copy for $5 so I went and bought it. After playing it I thought it was pretty damn good. It's nowhere near as bad as a lot of the reviews made it out to be. Granted it's no Killzone but that doesn't mean it's bad.
Also I will once again bring up Dungeon Hunter Alliance. I thought that game was stupid fun for what it was despite some of the bugs.

RBS was one of the best FPS games I ever played. Stuff like Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and such just don't interest me. It's all about visceral gameplay, or puzzles, or setpieces, boring mikitary themes, etc.
RBS' world felt grounded and fantastical in equal measure, and combat was simple but adequate, well balanced difficulty. Killzone and Turok take top spots, but I really hope Sony puts the Resistance series on PC so I can try the rest.

    • @PSVitaat2am

It just goes to show you that online review should really only be a template, because yes the same thing has happened to me in the past. I've enjoyed plenty of games out there that the critics absolutely hated, and vice versa. There's nothing like experiencing something for yourself. 🤗

Games I enjoyed much more than I thought I would:
Danganronpa (series): I was aware of the general concept of Danganronpa and had heard it compared to the likes of Phoenix Wright, and so I picked up the first game on a whim, mainly due to it being a Vita exclusive at the time. To my surprise it completely blew me away, so much so that I quickly bought Danganronpa 2 and blasted through it in under a week, staying up late and not wanting to go to sleep. Cut to today and it's one of my favourite video game series of all time, enough so that it inspired me to write a fanfiction based on it that I'm still posting regular updates for.
Dungeon Travelers 2: My first ever DRPG, I bought this game on the cheap because I found the ridiculous amount of ecchi content to be hilarious. What I got was a game that pretty much took over my life for the next month. I was expecting a competent RPG that I could sink my teeth into. What I was _not_ expecting was one of the most engrossing and deliciously brutal RPGs I've ever played. It kickstarted my love of DRPGs, after which I played Operation Abyss, Demon Gaze, Operation Babyl (Severely underrated IMO) and Stranger of Sword City. Dungeon Travelers 2 still remains my favourite though, with its impressive depth, tense exploration, immense challenge and strategic levelling system.
Astro Aqua Kitty: I'd played the original Astro Kitty and found it to be a fine but unremarkable Defender clone. With Astro being made available as a physical edition through Limited Run I decided to pick it up, expecting much of the same. What I got was a surprisingly fun Metroidvania-esque SHMUP with charming visuals and RPG-lite mechanics that lent themselves to the overall experience. Definitely more than meets the eye.
Games I wanted to like but didn't:
STAY: This (admittedly) is a game that I couldn't bring myself to finish. It had all the hallmarks of a game I was sure I'd enjoy - a narratively driven mystery with visual novel elements and a handful of puzzles - yet I came away from it with little more than disappointment and annoyance. The pacing is glacial at best, with much of the dialogue feeling superfluous, not to mention the main character typing out his responses with incorrect spelling only to type away and correct them over and over again, adding to the runtime needlessly. The game purports to be able to tell what type of person you are through certain "tests" depending on your dialogue choices throughout the game, with many of them being so presumptive to the point of actually feeling insulting, using false logic that the player is apparently supposed to be aware of. For example, accusing the player of not liking a challenge and always taking the easy way out for choosing an easy puzzle, despite the implication that you'd be tackling the medium and hard puzzles afterwards, when instead the main character leaves them and never comes back despite the fact completing them could offer a potential escape from the house they're trapped in. Or assuming the player "wasn't paying attention" during the intro if they ask the main character their name, despite one of the main mechanics being tied to gaining an emotion rapport with the main character, in which case asking for their name out of politeness would be a presumed benefit! I know these things shouldn't have bugged me this much, but they did. Add in the main character managing to get themselves killed by being a completely useless klutz when prompted to take reasonable actions and I completely lost interest in discovering the truth about the mystery, which is perhaps the very bane of the genre itself.
Lost Dimension: As someone who loved the first two Valkyria Chronicles games (Am still yet to play VC4. Maybe I'll get around to it at some point.) I was positively stoked when word of a similar game came about. Not to mention Lost Dimension's big hook: the existence of traitors in your team that you have to figure out and reveal in order to survive. Some welcome Danganronpa vibes there, and the game reviewed pretty well, prompting me to pick up a copy. Boy, what a mistake that was. I straight up hated the combat, finding it to be nowhere near as strategic or interesting as Valkyria Chronicles, and detested the "find the traitor" system, which had nothing to do with careful deliberation of evidence and instead boiled down to a weird minigame where you run towards voices? The game felt like an absolute failure, not delivering on anything that I wanted from it, which wasn't helped by the bland characters and ho-hum setting. I know the game has its fans, but... I just don't understand the appeal, I'm afraid.

Wow dude, that's a very detailed and in-depth list, you are giving me lots of excuses to give Danganronpa a second chance, I know the game is excellent, but I couldn't get the feel for it, also I'm yet to try Valkyrie Chronicles but is on my Vita just waiting, Dungeon Travelers 2... that's the one that I really could not like, I wanted to love it, found a de-censor patch and all but I always end up playing something else. Thanks Slick, your comment was a good read.

Hello James, this was a very difficult question to answer, but after lots of thought I have a mini list:
GTA VC, I loved as a kid, looks great on the Vita with those beautiful fan made mods but... I just don't have the same patience to replay failed missions from the very beginning and I find aiming more difficult than it needs to be, of course I'm spoiled by modern gaming.
Dungeon Travelers 2: Great graphics, waifus galore, deep RPG mechanics, perfect fit for a handheld (de-censored is a bonus) but I just got bored and play something else, I know, I'm the worst PS Vita community member I got 0 out of 10 and banned forever.
Gun - Gun Pixies: Also great graphics and tight controls, but I just don't enjoy the story of the game as much (I know, that's a weak argument for a game like that, specially with the uncensored version of the game) I'll give GGP one more try sometime in the future but as usual I got many other games that I want to finish and my play time is getting more scarce (That's the beauty of the Vita, play anytime, anywhere and when time is an issue the Vita is the solution) Have a good one man.

Oh, and also for the very hentai-esque sequences where our beloved busty kunoichis are presented as erotic dishes every time they lose a cooking challenge. ;P

The "H" in history, legends of war reminds me a lot of the history channel. Did the history channel make that video game? It would so funny if they did lol.
OH man I was always afraid of getting into Danganronpa. I thought I'd waste my money but I finally said screw it I'll risk my time and money. I beat 1 and 2 so far and enjoyed them both and enjoyed the mini games as well. Still have V3 sitting in my library waiting to be played. I have high expectations. It's the only VN I ever picked up and didn't drop in like 5 mins that wasn't an adult game 🤣

    • @PSVitaat2am
      @PSVitaat2am  2 роки тому

I'm not 100% sure about the History channels involvement with the game, but considering their logo is on it I'm assuming they were involved in some way shape or form. As for Danganronpa 3, it was the most divisive game of the trilogy if you don't count Ultra Despair Girls. Personally I liked it but a lot of fans didn't care much for its ending. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it when you get around to playing it Ken. 🙂
