Hi I recently bought a young monstera and because I was in holiday for a week I think I overwatered it and started to have brown spots on two of the leaves. What should I do best? Remove those brown spots leaves or wait for the soil to get dry?
Thank you very much indeed for your advice. Our baby Swiss Cheese Plants are flourishing due to your advice. Also, for your advice of what to do if it is too wet, etc. We cannot thank you enough. You covered possible problems, that are so valuable to us and many other people. If they died, we couldn't replace them as they are so expensive. My Mother-In-Law bought a plant for my 60th Birthday tomorrow, (6/9/2023). One for myself and One for her daughter. We are like Mother's! These Monstera Cheese Plants hopefully will grow into healthy, happy Plants? I will let you know as time goes by. You are a Blessing to both of us. Your knowledge is invaluable, also to a lot of other people from what I read in people's Feedback. Bless You. 🪴I have not got a photo of a Cheese Plant sorry. x
Thank you for your advise I purchase this monstera a week ago it had some black spots and now parts are turning black, I haven’t watering yet just water sprayed when got home.
Both under-watering and overwatering, can lead to issues with Monstera plant leaves turning yellow. If the leaves feel dry and brittle, then they are likely dying due to underwatering. If the leaves are moist and almost seem to be rotting as they turn yellow, that is a strong indication of excess water.
I read that the splits on the leaves are to help wind travel through so a bit of movement can encourage them (a gentle shake). Made sense but could be wrong.
The splits are to let light get to the lower part of the plant. You’ll notice that very little splits occur the lower they are. Higher ones will have more splits
Thats right. The splits helps in many ways. Such as wind travel, light, and rain water. Because these plants are tropical plants where it rains and moisture level is always high.
Thank you for all the great tips👍🏾😊, absolutely answered all my questions on MD plant. I've subscribed!🌹💞 I love your smooth speaking voice and I've really enjoyed your tutorial...Thank you.👍🏾☘️🌸
Hi there, If the leaves are developing properly then there could be many reasons. Firstly, check if the plant is watered enough. Secondly its receiving enough indirect bright light. Thirdly, there could be nutrient deficiency that could be causing leaves problems. Fertilize during spring and summer with complete liquid fertilizer once monthly.
Hi there. Great video. What do I do if I have this problem in winter and that under/over watering is not the issue? Many thanks. Would it be safe to repot it?
Thank you for this video. I don’t really have any of the problems mentioned, but I have an issue I’m not sure about. Why are my new growth leaves curly? Not drooping, not yellowing, curly. The stem is also a bit curly. Help🙏🏼
Hi Giselle, Thank you so much. Inspect your plant and soil thoroughly for any pest infestation. If not then maybe a nutrient deficiency. Curly leaves are generally caused due to extreme temperatures (hot/cold), arid conditions or too much humidity, and too bright light. Make sure all these factors are taken care of. Hopefully, your plant will recover soon.👍
@@Homemakr thank you for responding. I did an inspection and it’s very healthy. And the only leaves curled are the new growth leaves. But I will keep an eye on it. Thanks again and have a great day.
In my experience, the new leaves uncurl from the stem of the previous leaf so that's probably why. My monstera adanosai does the same but they uncurl pretty quickly with a little helping hand. The deliciosa leaves are much fleshier so they take more effort to straighten. I saw a video on YT where a girl used cardstock junk mail, cut into strips, to make a sort of "brace" which she scotch-taped to the back side of the leaves with the strips holding it in correct position. One long strip down the middle and branching smaller strips out to hold certain striation segments which are also curled. I tried it and my plant looks so uniform and nice now. Hope that helps!
@@yaya804 wow I've never heard of this. My monstera has new growth even now in the start of winter, but the new leaves take a while, a week or so to fully open. I would never think of pushing/forcing it, Isn't that what the plant does naturally? I'm just happy the thing is alive and doing so well.

Good evening. Thank you for your helpful information. I do have a question I haven’t been able to find an answer for. Several of my monstera STEMS have brown along their splits where the leaf has come out of. Should I be doing anything different to alleviate the brown on the stems? Thank you
Hi there, Thank you so much for watching. I think if your leaves and plant is growing healthy and the stem browning is not affecting the new growth then don't worry.
My monstera has those dried brown pieces too. I tried to pull one but I ended up ripping actual healthy strings away. Maybe if they really bother you, you could cut them a bit shorter where the dead material is, idk. But don't pull on them!
Low humidity causes brown spots on a Monstera leaf because unlike other plant species, it takes in a lot of its water through the leaves. When there isn't enough moisture in the air around the plant it will dry out and turn brown. A leaf that has gone brown due to low humidity will also have a papery texture.

Hi there, You can remove the yellow leaves as they will not turn green again. Cutting them off will help the plant to focus its energy on healthy leaves and better growth. Give your monstera some time to adjust to the new environment. It will pick up its lost vigour soon.
Hi Karmini, you can add the moss pole when you think the plant needs support. Also moss pole helps to keep the aerial roots moist which promotes bigger and healthy leaves.

If its a newly bought plant then it could be the change of place and other conditions. Give it some time, it will get better itself.
Hello my monsters has some strange looking leaves…..I can take a photo a little later but I wanted to know do you have a time lapsed video of how the leaves begin their fenustration? I’m thinking that’s why they look the way they look but I’m not sure
Hi Marie, the leaves develop their fenestrations while they are curled and growing. Therefore, I cant make a time lapse of how leaves develop fenestrations. If you plant is small, it might not develop fenestrations till it grows bigger. If your plant is mature enough but still not developing fenestrations then that could be due to lack of sufficient lighting.
@@Homemakr thank you so much for responding. I’m gonna reach out to you from Now on as it is very stressful when you have an iss and can’t get an answer. Could you tell me what’s wrong with my plant and what I can do
I've had my Monster for about 8 months now. She is my most favorite plant I have and just recently it has started to have these yellow spots underneath the leaves then they started to curl and now they're starting to droop. What do I do?!? help!! 😢🙏🏻 I did repot a few weeks before all these things started to happen! Don't know if it related but just thought I should mention it in case someone could help me.
It is very common for a plant to droop or slow down in growth after repotting as the plants may go in Transplant shock due to the change in its soil conditions. May be the soil that you used has harsh chemicals or was infected. Rinse the soil once with hydrogen peroxide solution and see if it helps. For concentration details, check out my video on uses of hydrogen peroxide. This will also kill any harmful bacteria or pests in the soil and provide a boost of extra oxygen to roots. I would suggest to take few healthy cuttings of the plant and place it in water, just in case the plant dies, you will still have some propogated cuttings.
I would suggest to let your plant settle in the new environment first before giving the plant another shock by transplanting it straight away. Once the plant has adjusted to the new routine and new environment (light, water, air, ventilation, humidity etc) and starts showing some new growth, then you can repot it in a different pot. But still I would suggest you to repot when you see the roots coming out the drainage holes or the plant growth is stunted. Please check my video on "When to repot your plant" ua-cam.com/video/cuyXr77RrmM/v-deo.html
The leaves of my monstera are turning almost completely brown, it does have 3 new baby leaves so its still alive but all the other leaves look like they are dying, what must I do with them? Cut them completely off from the start of the stem? Or only the leaves? Or leave them like this? Thank you for your help
Low humidity causes brown spots on a Monstera leaf because unlike other plant species, it takes in a lot of its water through the leaves. When there isn't enough moisture in the air around the plant it will dry out and turn brown. A leaf that has gone brown due to low humidity will also have a papery texture. Pruning is good for your monstera so you can cut off the brown spots, and feel free to trim the leaves in the shape they would grow to remove the dead parts.
Hi there, The most common cause of yellowing of leaves is Improper watering or nutrient deficiency. I have mentioned about this in detail in the video.
Check all the conditions that the plant requires to grow healthy i.e. sunlight, water, draining soil, ventilation etc. Make sure you provide the plant with all the necessary requirements.
Hi Lisa, It's ok... You don't need to feel guilty about it. I have also killed many plants during my plant journey. It needs a lot of time, energy, and dedication to be a plant parent. We learn from our mistakes.
Hi there My monsteras seem happy and healthy but their leaves lie parallel rather than perpendicular to their stems. I'm going to give them some support but is there any way I can get them to change their position themselves.
Hi Sally, Plant leaves have the tendency to reach out for light and that is when the leaves start facing towards the light. If the indoor plants are not rotated then all the leaves become one-sided and looks blank on the other. Maybe try changing the position of your plant according to light so then the leaves will change their position as well. ☺
Hi my monsteras leaves are becoming dry and I moved it respites it and nothing improves it and new leaves just won’t open up they dry and die before it opens HELP don’t know what to do
Not all leaf yellowing is a sign that the plant has something going wrong. The lower canopy will eventually turn yellow as the plant no longer needs the younger, smaller leaves and absorbs their nutrients. For example, right now one of the first, small, young leaves has turned yellow on my plant, I'll remove it once it completely withers and can easily be removed.
Hello… I had the brown/ yellow leaves… as you mentioned in your video… I repotted the plant… the roots didn’t seem to be rotting… should I still water the monstera after giving it a new pot… if over watering might have been a problem… anyway? Thanks for your video…👌
Hi Don, Sorry for late reply. Always check your plant soil before watering. If the soil feels moist then wait for few more days and reassess. If its dry then watering your plant. Thanks for watching. 🙂
I just bought a monstera deliciosa recently and directly put it to a bigger better looking pot ....i repotted with normal soil and vermi compost... But within 3-4 days the tip of leaves have started turning inward...i don't understand the reason eventhough the plant is kept in a well lit balcony and is watered mindfully ..please help 🫠
Hi there, When a new plant is brought home, give some plant enough time to adjust itself to the new environment and conditions. After few weeks of purchase, ypu can repot into a bigger pot. But as you already did it, it might have gone inot transplant shock which is why its leaves are curling. It could also be due to low humidity or too much bright light. The leaves tend to curl to avoid water loss. May be move it to an area where it recieves indirect light. And let it settle in the new pot.
I have a huge monstera that is constantly pushing out new growth year around but lately has been having the oldest leaves turning 'bleached' for color around the shape of the leaves. I do not over water as I check the soil daily. BUT, I have not repotted the plant in the three years I have had it. I am in a panick right now on what to do and what is wrong. PLEASE answer with suggestions. There is no logical reason for this. The plant has always had the same conditions it is happy in and it does not appear to be root bound. However, there is very little soil left because it has grown so large. WHAT DO I DO?
Hi Megan, I would suggest you to repot the plant. Sometimes , salt build up in the soil can also cause the leaf discolouration. Also, with time, soil tends to get compacted which can cause poor aeration to roots which can affect the leaves and plant. Repot your plant and see if the problem gets solved.
Hi There, to repot your monstera you can use a potting mix with peatmoss or cococoir, perlite and compost. There are many already prepared potting mix bags available in the shops. For fertilizing, you can buy any complete liquid fertilizer for indoor plants or seaweed solution. I am not from UK but you can easily find these things in any plant store.
Hi there, leaf curl can be caused due to high temperatures, low humidity, too much bright light, over or under watering. check for all these reasons to see which one is the causing the leaves to curl. Sometimes, pest infestation also causes the leaves to curl. Inspect for the Pest infestation as well.
Hi Dhanashree, For monsteras, well draining soil is preferrable. You can make a potting mix using cococoir or cocopeat/ regular potting mix + Compost for nutrition + Perlite or coarse sand or pumice( whatever you have) for better drainage.
That's the same size of the one that I brought last year I wish that they had smaller ones but it was the last one they had. I think I got it from the place called petite something or maybe it was the Christmas place with all the Christmas decorations.

Hi Karmini, you can add the moss pole when you think the plant needs support. Also moss pole helps to keep the aerial roots moist which promotes bigger and healthy leaves.

I’m gonna reach out to you from
Now on as it is very stressful when you have an iss and can’t get an answer. Could you tell me what’s wrong with my plant and what I can do
Thanks heaps❤️❤️❤️
I am so worried my monstera look unhealthy.
Hi Lorie, Thank you so much for watching. Make sure you take care of all the requirements of your monstera and it will recover. All the best.🙂
Is it a good idea to transplant the plant right after you buy it?
I would suggest to let your plant settle in the new environment first before giving the plant another shock by transplanting it straight away. Once the plant has adjusted to the new routine and new environment (light, water, air, ventilation, humidity etc) and starts showing some new growth, then you can repot it in a different pot. But still I would suggest you to repot when you see the roots coming out the drainage holes or the plant growth is stunted. Please check my video on "When to repot your plant" ua-cam.com/video/cuyXr77RrmM/v-deo.html
@@Homemakr I was thinking that I was going to do that but then I checked the roots and they were very deep root bound.
Can I water this plant with purchased fresh Aquarian water from Petco?
Hi Connie, I think normal water is fine for these plants. I have never tried Aquarium water.
Does this apply to hoyas as well? My hoyas have yellow and brown leaves like this. Thanks.
@MaryAnn, Yes, these are some common problems that can occur in many plants... Improper watering can cause yellow or brown leaves.
thank you
You're welcome 🙂
I purchased my monstera approximately 3 weeks ago, and some of my leaves are turning yellow. What can I do
Hi there, The most common cause of yellowing of leaves is Improper watering or nutrient deficiency. I have mentioned about this in detail in the video.
Ok thank you!
I only got one leaf on my swiss cheese plant / adisonii monstera its a a baby plant but i dont know what to do it turning black on the edges
Check all the conditions that the plant requires to grow healthy i.e. sunlight, water, draining soil, ventilation etc. Make sure you provide the plant with all the necessary requirements.
I brought one of those beautiful plants last year and it only lived for about a month, still kind of sad about it.
Hi Lisa, It's ok... You don't need to feel guilty about it. I have also killed many plants during my plant journey. It needs a lot of time, energy, and dedication to be a plant parent. We learn from our mistakes.
@@Homemakr that is definitely true. But it's had been my dream since I was very little to one day get one of those beautiful plants.
Hi there
My monsteras seem happy and healthy but their leaves lie parallel rather than perpendicular to their stems.
Hi my monsteras leaves are becoming dry and I moved it respites it and nothing improves it and new leaves just won’t open up they dry and die before it opens HELP don’t know what to do
When the soil is dry must I water it till water drips out under?
Not all leaf yellowing is a sign that the plant has something going wrong. The lower canopy will eventually turn yellow as the plant no longer needs the younger, smaller leaves and absorbs their nutrients. For example, right now one of the first, small, young leaves has turned yellow on my plant, I'll remove it once it completely withers and can easily be removed.
My monsteras are thriving in direct sunlight. No sunburn. But maybe it depends on where you live?
Exactly. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I want to repot my Monstera. Can anyone recommend a good soil and plant food that I can buy and not pay high garden centre prices?? I live in the U.K.
@@Homemakr I’ve ordered some miracle gro house plant soil. It contains NiTROGEN
PHOSPHORUS POTASSIUM. I’m hoping that’s ok
Might I ask what may cause my mature leaves to curl?
Hi there, leaf curl can be caused due to high temperatures, low humidity, too much bright light, over or under watering. check for all these reasons to see which one is the causing the leaves to curl. Sometimes, pest infestation also causes the leaves to curl. Inspect for the Pest infestation as well.
What soil is good for monstera
Hi Dhanashree, For monsteras, well draining soil is preferrable. You can make a potting mix using cococoir or cocopeat/ regular potting mix + Compost for nutrition + Perlite or coarse sand or pumice( whatever you have) for better drainage.
My monstera is not doing good
That's the same size of the one that I brought last year I wish that they had smaller ones but it was the last one they had. I think I got it from the place called petite something or maybe it was the Christmas place with all the Christmas decorations.
How Does the monstera look today?
cannot hear
Maybe check your audio settings. I can hear fine :-)
Good video. You are looking to your left. Try looking at the camera.
Thanks for the tip..🙂
