Classic Game Room was the FIRST classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999. Returning in 2008 with new episodes, Classic Game Room breaks out a review of the PLAYSTATION 2 PS2 VS. ATARI 2600 video computer system VCS. CGRHD takes a close look at the new PS2 Slim model compared to the smaller Atari 2600 Jr. The 2600 Junior (as it was known) was released in 1986 to a public hot for the NES, sadly it never received the recognition that it deserved. So which is better? In this versus console battle to the death these two juggernauts from different video gaming eras compete for the world championship of great video game consoles... right. What is incredible is that in the history of video games, the Atari 2600 was a landmark system that debuted in 1977. The PS2 was released to North America in October of 2000. Both were expensive when they came out, were huge and bulky and had only a few games available. But over time they developed a huge fan following that enjoyed their gameplay and graphics, and had literally thousands of games released for each system. Both the 2600 and Playstation 2 had smaller, more compact models released and both are more affordable today for collectors. Sadly there is no wood grained heavy sixer PS2. Check out all the Classic Game Room HD reviews for awesome arcade retro old school games vs. the newest brand new video games on the market for PS3 and Xbox 360. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. The reviews on the HD series are reviewing PS3, PS2, Genesis, NES, Atari and Xbox 360. I love how sometimes he sounds like a grade-school report. "Even though the Atari 2600 has a higher number than the PlayStation 2, I consider both of these game consoles to be equal."
Awesome.
I happen to own both a Atari 2600 4 switch Woodgrain system, and a PS2 Slim,I play my Atari 2600 more than my PS2 AND my Xbox 360! Retro gaming +1
"The Atari 2600 defines the word classic." Says the angry video game nerd. i agree with him.
Actually, both systems are very comparable to one another and have a lot in common. A. They had a major, profoundly important and influential impact upon the gaming industry, B. They provided AAA powerhouse titles within their life cycles, C. They have a vast, deep and eclectic library of games of many genres and D. they had long lifespans that succeeded their competitors. It's a good comparison.
I lost it at the reflector strip.
I’m gonna put a reflector strip on all my consoles. Evolutionary
i own a Atari 2600 and I'm proud of it
They suck
Does Atari have GTA or Medal Of Honor
No
Bull Dog your joking right, the atari 2600 came out in the 70s you fool
Bull Dog are you idiot the Atari came out way before disks where invented
RIP
Atari 2600
1977-1992
im damn positive the 2600 will win. its even better than the PS4.
Just look at those graphics on the 2600!
are u blind?
+Sonic The Hedgehog do you know sarcasm?
+Sonic The Hedgehog Sarcasm dude,sarcasm...
Sonic The Hedgehog sarcasm
Lunar PRIX The Atari 2600 is 40 years more advance then the PS4 it can play games instantly imagine having that convenience today that there is the future of gaming.
This took me back to my childhood, I miss My Atari, I wish I kept it
I had a 5200 which I sold for $50 when I was a teen. 😂
PS2, Atari 2600 and Game Boy Advance are the only 3 systems anyone needs.
+ Dreamcast
+ Nes
***** CD-i
haha :D
What about a top of the line pc?. Nothing beats that imo. As long as the older titles are compatible with your OS that is
I miss these awesome reviews from CGR and Derek.
You can fit 1,300 PlayStation 2's in a 2600.
Nice comparisons! The outboard/modular PSU is a superior option. Much easier to replace or repair.
Another fun Atari note, the PS2 chassis design may have been based on the Atari Falcon 040 computer. The Falcon was never released, sadly...
A Playstation 2 is now as old as an Atari 2600 was when a Playstation 2 was first released.
Classic game room rocks. I have watched the channel videos so many times over and over again. Great work mark :) Top ten's and drama videos go take a hike !
I love the intro
Only CGR can do crazy comparisons like this. I LOVE YOU GUYS.
Ahhhhh...the 2600 Jr. My very first console
+TheGame4Life Same,It was awesome!!!
i still have mine 30 years later
"Some people regard the PS2 as the greatest game console of its generation"
Take away those last three words and it would be more accurate
The PS2 is the best selling video game console of all time. It has sold 155 million units as of right now.
That's an odd looking Heavy Sixer. Heavy Sixers have thick molding on the sides, and don't overlap on the console base. It looks like or must be a Heavy Sixer motherboard with the top shell and a Light Sixer base. As It has a near 90 degree angle cut and straight on the bottom plastic piece beneath the wood grain finish. And the Atari logo Is more higher level on a Heavy Sixer model. I should know since I have a Heavy Sixer, Light Sixer, 4 switch woody and Vader models.
Are you really good at any Atari 2600 games, retrogamer810? I find many of the arcade ports being easy to the point of being able to marathon them and get scores of several million (depending on game)
I remember playing both Pac-Man and Space Invaders for 24 hours straight getting scores of 1.2 million on Pac-Man, and 2.7 milion on Space Invaders.
see everyone - THIS IS ONE OF A FEW DUDES WHICH STILL HAVE THE ESSENCE OF WHAT GAMING IS IN THEIR HEARTS!
as much as i love the 2600, i have to point out that there was a ps2 game called atari anthology that let you play over 60 original 2600 games (including berzerk)
Actually it's 67 games for the 2600 on the Anthology for PS 2, and Berzerk is NOT on there - not on the Arcade at Home section OR the Arcade section which is only the arcade versions of Atari games.
i have a 2600, i use the 2600, i don't see the ps2 as a replacement for the 2600. i just wanted to point out his mistake. as you pointed out mine. but i never mentioned berzerk.
Im a PC gamer and i dont own any consoles. But i love a lot of games from consoles so i've instaled emulators for many of them to play great games like sonic and mario and street fighter or king of fighters, etc.
Great channel! Thx for the unique content!
do sega genesis vs ps4
I just installed Atariod on my Android phone. Fun way to play all the old classics. Also, no need to keep every old game system on your shelf if you install homebrew on your wii - you can emulate nearly every older gen console (nes, snes, n64, neogeo, atari, psx, etc). Good video.
Both consoles were titans in their era, the PS2's which has just now ended, the 2600 having a simply STAGGERING 14 years and 9 months lifespan, which the PS2 suprisingly has not beaten...dam good music Mark XD.
i picked up a heavy sixer from an old man who bought it back in 1977 and he talked about how his kids loved it growing up. and i got it with instruction manual,12games, dust cover & 2controllers for $20!
you know you're a classic gamer when you keep coming back the this review just to see the woodgrain 2600 and reminisce.
6:12 WTF are you doing?! Never put drinks on top of your consoles! Don't even put them on the same surface as the console, that's an accident waiting to happen. One wrong move and you just killed your console. Come on, man it's not rocket science. Liquids and electricity do not mix! Even as a joke, don't do that! Just watching it is nerve wracking.
I got an Atari 2600 in 1980, I played that thing till 1989 when I got a Nintendo. Those things were great. I wish I still had it, I bet it would still work.
ROFL. I love his reasoning for which console wins. It shows its just a fun, not too serious review, but VERY informative.
I found an old dusty Atari in a yard sale here in Brazil some months ago. It was about 60,00-70,00 USD and it had about 20 cartridges (WITH PITFALL!!).I just had to buy it.
About a week later, my little sister (She's 12 ) comes into my house and i showed to her the Atari. I told her : This was the first video game console!
And then she said :
WOW, cool!! But you have to buy wirelles controllers for it...this wire is too short.
First CGR episode i have ever watched.
Wow, nice review!
A lot of gamers who come from those days, like myself, sometimes have a tendency to place too much weight for their evaluations on the side of nostalgia. I like that you avoid that.
Ugh, great, now there are going to be nostalgia vs. quality arguments going on.
"The ps2 was an innovator with the use of two analog sticks!"
"The Atari was the first game system ever!"
"No, that was the odyssey"
And so on until this video has over a trillion comments. That is some great strategy there, InecomCompany.
back in 84 my friend's 2600 kept blowing capacitors, luckily he worked on cpu's & had spares on hand to do a pitstop whenever needed.
"I have an atari flashback 2. Should I still get the atari 2600?"
If I were you, then yes. You can please purists and quench the nostalgic memories that only an Atari can bring.
The ridges make it easier to dip your Playstation 2 console into your games, and play for hours on end.
Yep. There's a whole movement of homebrew games being made for the 2600 today and continues through the years!
Yep, actually of my consoles:
Odyssey 2
Intellivision
Vectrex
Coleco vision
Sega genesis
Commodore 64
Vic 20
Atari 2600, 5200, 7800
NES
SNES
N64
PS2
Xbox
Wii
Xbox 360
The atari 2600 is the only one that works every time without problems.
I still have my atari which i bought in 1979,My kids love it,They play on it every now and thenEven though they have X boxes.
@michiyoyoshiku I am NOT talking about Die Cast, I'm talking about pressed steel and they were a hell of alot bigger than that die-cast crap today. Not sure exactly how old you are, But if you were born between 1968 (The year I was born) - 1978, then you would know that ALL of the Tonka Trucks (which were construction trucks the resembled real construction trucks) were made from pressed steel, and that Hot Weels and Matchbox were the only toys that were die-cast.
I like the nice early-90's infomercial music you have here! XD
I got a PS2 for my 6th birthday and have had it ever since and still use it
Oh my God, I feel so homesick!! Take me back, take me back so that I could get to be a kid again. That time will never come back for sure
Why would you even put your drink on your console?
theatarigamer That's why the North American SNES looks the way it does to prevent people putting there drinks on there system damaging them with spills from soft drinks i guess putting drinks on electronics is a American thing.
PS2: "Nice wood paneling."
Atari 2600: "Suck my ridges!"
This is the first video that comes up for "Atari". Mark, you are the king of the internet.
I love your reviews
good vid, I'm 33 I got my 1st Atari 2600 when I was 7 for X-Mas in 84, many good memories from that and I still buy games for my PS2. IMO It should never matter how old a system is, good games should always be played.
and yes I agree about the ridges, lol, was my 1st thought when the PS2 came out, I also used to put my glasses of milk on my 2600 eating pb+j's and watching The Incredible Hulk tv series.
1:45 That's why Atari made wireless Joysticks that use the same wireless technology old cellphones use. (Antennas) I agree with everyone who said the 2600 was better!
We got the PS2 back in 2000. We mostly played classic games on it. I still have it! Atari 2600 is totally awesome though.
Hey, Mark can you review the Atari 2600, itself, that would be cool
Thank goodness for woodgrain leaving the picture. Then again, I had the 4 switch Vader version (all black).
best games for atari 2600 in my opinion
1. berzerk
2. dig dug
3. tunnel runner
4. pitfall 2
5. space invaders
I agree. The old consoles sure were built to last. Mind you, so is anything else. Everything modern seems to break very quickly in comparison.
i never had an atari 2600 myself. I had to go to my aunt's house to play. I was born in 87, so I had an NES, SNES, and Gameboy as a kid.
Yeah! Atari rules! I love my NES and while the NES did "clean up the mess" so to speak, the Atari 2600 was the one of the first commercial home video game successes! (The Pong machine came earlier.)
Mark, you love Atari, Playstation, and Sega and you drink real beer.....Your awsomeness cannot be measured.
You like your Belgian Beer eh? :)
Anyway love your reviews. You often add these absurd touches to them and I like how you treat all consoles equally. Great stuff.
The Playstation 2 had a massive selection of games from every genre imaginable, had full backwards compatibility with the Playstation and not too many really bad games and nor were they as noticible as much as the Atari 2600 bad games. The PS2 has sold more units than any other system and I wonder How many of you people still play your PS2 today?
I have looked all over the internet for a weakness to the PS2 but I can't find a real reason! So, like the comment you think is best. Atari 2600 or PS2
It is a sad fact that a quite a considerable amount of the modern population is dyslexic. Subsequently, many users confused the "dislike" button for "dis-I-like!"
I still have my dad's vintage Atari that he gave to me when I moved out. I play it every now and then and add to it's library. But sadly, I just can't stay too long away from my PS3's graphics. 8-bit is fun as a vacation, though, back to simpler times where you didn't get headaches from Fallout 3's scenery and the such.
I got my Atari 2600 yesterday and it came with 25 games and is really fun. But its difficult for me to decide which one I like more, because the atari 2600 is EXTREMELY entertaining, but the PS2 game library includes my favorite game of all time. And that is Bully. So im gonna say there both good.
Yeah my friend got tricked into buying one. When he saw the light sixer. He thought it was the heavy sixer due to the weight. So he bought it and said, I finally found the original heavy sixer! So I let him enjoy his happiness moment. Then I showed him my heavy sixer. I showed him the molding, the weight, told him the truth and he got pretty frustrated.
Nice humor added.......... I can't help but think I am listening to the actor Harold Ramis...... Enjoyed the review... Thanks.
I had a 2600 JR and a stack of games. Two things I do recall, 1st the machine and the games were very expensive (I often had to buy 2nd hand) and most of the games were repetitive and TOUGH !
No saves, no extra lives, no memory cards to store position or data
I wonder how many of todays gamers would cope
The Atari was the first console I ever played! Born in '84 babe!
People still play the old systems, just like people still watch old classic black and white movies. Many of those old games are still fun to play. They rest on their graphics and sound, so they had to focus on good gameplay. That doesn't mean all the games were good of course, but a lot of them were.
I don't agree that those who played on older systems make fun of newer systems, I've never seen it. Fans of the older systems probably also have the newer systems too.
God these were so good videos!
I'm a pre-teen and this looks beast. I remember there was a passage about Atari in my class at school one day. When I looked it up, I thought it looked really fun. I LOVE 8-bit games. They're cheap too. Should I get one for my b-day? Or Christmas?
I believe he was making a point that you can't play VHS tapes on a DVD player, just like you can't play Atari games on a PS2. Both consoles have tonnes of merit, and your preference is simply an opinion. That's all there is to it.
Mark placed an atari joystick right in front of the B&W toggle switch so you can't see that the top part of the switch is broken of at the beginning of the video.
A ps2 slim has a fan actually, a verry small one wich you cannot see from the outside but you can hear it a little when its on and on the back air is coming from it,
Nice vid dude^^
Someone should make a wood grained case for new consoles. It can be fake wood to keep the hippies happy.
Actually, many people had a PS2 and always used it as a DVD player. it really did replace some people's DVD players. Also, the number of accessories a system has doesn't do much good for it. The NES had a bunch of accessories that just didn't work. One person isn't better than another because they can defecate more.
Personally, I think that Atari should have done a front-mount cartridge thing for the Atari 2600 Jr, where you insert the cartridge into the front of the console. Similar to the Fairchild Channel F. That would look super badass.
I at first had a PS2 slim edition. A few years later I buyed a new PS2, this time a normal one and I was stunned how big it was. O.o
What the hell are you talking about. You're really misinformed. It wasn't Atari that ruined it at all. Atari was the one that actually made home video game consoles popular. After its success, tons of companies realized how successful they could be by entering into this new industry and the market was overloaded with consoles. That's what destroyed the industry. If it wasn't for the Atari 2600, we wouldn't have even had the NES.
ATARI 2600 is clearly the better console. There's much more experience behind it. I mean they had made 2599 different consoles already before the 2600, while Sony had only made one before the PS2! That's a LOT of experience.
That beer thing might be the deciding factor for most of us :D
the FIRST console I fell in love with was a NES... I saw the atari years before but I never cared for it, the games were not as colorful as the NES games.
was looking through Atari games. I found out I have bezerk :-)
Actually, I bought a PS2 game that has 67 Atari 2600 games on it. Atari Anthology may be a great collection, but you gotta have the original thing too!
:P
Which console should I get next? Atari 2600, Sega Genesis, or Snes?
3:11 the best part
PS 2 might not play 2600 carts BUT it does have 2600 games available for it. The Atari Collection - which has 67 Atari 2600 titles - including greats like Yars Revenge. Missle Command, Centipede, and Asteroids plus 13 Atari Arcade games. There is also an Activision Classics available for PS 2 with all the Activision & Imagic titles.
Yeah does it have frogger mountain king frogger 2 godzilla solaris star raiders adventure
Yeah, that power supply outlet was REALLY a hassle for me. I come down to the living room at 8 A.M., get everything ready to play, get the controller out, turn on the T.V., turn on the power grid (because our Playstation 2 was hooked up to a power grid), turn off the red light and... it wouldn't work. Why? Because that power supply wasn't hooked in! It was awful.
ATARI 2600 was the first video game system with cartridges and should therefore win the competition.
Arari 2600!!!!
I used to have it but have no idea what happened to it now :((((
i agree that all systems need a reflective strip as a safety feature.
I've started collecting old school consoles as well. So far I have a Game Cube, Play Station 2, Nintendo 64 and hopefully in a few weeks I will have the Play Station 1. Before I buy more consoles I need to buy games for them. What consoles have you got in your collection?
Next up: Xbox One and Atari 5200!!! That was bad, I shouldn't trash talk - I have an Xbox 360. Microsoft serious fucked up their new console though.
im only 15 years old, but the Atari 2600 interests me unbelieveably, and now plan on getting one
Ps2 vs Atari 2600,not the same generation but many similarities.Respect to both!
I just bought a Sears Video Arcade for $5 at a flea market down the street from me.
Best $5 I have ever spent.
I bet Frog Design ripped the ridges from the Atari 2600 that came before it, with their Snow White Design (Mac II). What a total rip. I never thought about it, until you pointed out how the PS2 ripped the ridges from the 2600. Effing copy cats. Of course, the C=64 had these ridges as well, along the top edge, with the name plate and the power LED embedded.
I got the Atari 2600 today complete with everything it would have come with back in 1977 plus 7 games all for $115.
I still have my PS2 bought June of 2001 still functional though a pain running blue-sided discs.
Never bothered to go slim due to nostalgia.
Don't have an Atari console but I sure can get Atari collection PS2 discs or emulate them on PS2.
The one thing Atari has over most new and newer game systems is that almost all the 2600s still work. I've got a Heavy Sixer. That thing was released 35 years ago...35 years... I don't think many of these newer cd based systems will still work 35 years from now, Maybe a select few which will drive a huge price from collectors. Keep your fingers crossed so yours survives. You'll be sitting on a gold mine if not many survive.
Video gaming was still alive and well in other countries, where it only died out here in america.
Playability on these old games is better than today games
