Classic Game Room HD reviews the SEGA CD add-on for the Sega Genesis video game console! Or the Mega CD for those of you with Megadrives. Same thing, different colors and name. The Sega CD was originally released by Sega in 1992, updated with the model 2 in 1994/1995. It plays.. you guessed it, SEGA CD games! The MegaCD is a pretty cool device that attached to your Mega Drive (which is Mega rad) and plays compact discs with awesome video games on them like Android Assault, Silpheed, Robo Aleste and Sewer Shark. CD media is different than cartridges and back in the day this was pretty high technology. Should you buy a Sega CD? Will your MD collection be better off if kept company by a stack of Sega CD games? Well... yes. Classic Game Room goes into great detail to look over the Mega CD and review how it works, functions and operates. CGRHD is the money bomb when it comes to retro gaming reviews. Word up!

The sega cd deserved way way more attentionfrom game developers then it actualy dit, because it could do sprite scaling aswell aswell as background scaling, it also could do 100% cd quality, and uses cd's for higher storage capacity, taking that into account it was much much cheaper to make games for it then on snes.

I would get the Sega Genesis CDX because it is a standalone Sega CD console. Add-ons for the Genesis cause a lot of clutter. There is also a Sega CD memory cartridge that saves your game data. The Sega CD memory cartridge can fit into your model 1 and model 2 Genesis consoles and it can also fit into your CDX. I have an idea: get a Sega power strip where the sockets are rotated and spaced out and plug in your model 1/model 2 Genesis, plug your Sega 32X add-on into either the model 1 or model 2 Genesis, plug in your CDX and last but not least, plug in your Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast and you're all set.

instead of making the 32x Sega should have just kept making games on the Sega CD. Because when the 32x came out it was like 6, 7 months before the Saturn so they didn't get to make a lot of games for it which was a shame cuz both add ons are awesome but just don't have a lot of games, sadly.

    • @ryzmaker11

Matthew Brotherton The Mega-CD has quite a large library with a lot of awesome titles in every genres : Lunar I & II; Dark Wizard; Dennin-Aleste; Silpheed; Sonic CD; etc... But the 32X, yeah, deserved so much more attention from the dev' coz, indeed, it's also an a-ma-zing piece of hardware!!! But it still has 34 games which, in fact, is quite impressive considering how shortly it lasted (Just compare with the SuperGrafx library : 5 games, lol, & it's not even an add-on but a full console) & some of them are fantastic like Virtua Racing Deluxe; Stellar Assault or After Burner Complete! Just imagine if it has lasted for what, 1 or 2 more years? Oh man SEGA were crazy.

+S.O.V. The Dark King hardware wise the saturn is no match for the n64 whatsoever.
in terms of other technologies like compact discs and online play?
n64, get outta here. saturn takes this.
played bomber man saturn with my friends using private servers and it was a good time.
theres something about online on the saturn that local split screen on n64 can't beat.

I think it would be better to make a cartridge for the Saturn, that can allow to play the Sega CD games, they made a cartridge that allows to play Japanese Saturn games, but they need Translation, they could make a better version with more ram, Sega CD compatible, and translation, that would be awesome.

Sega really was the truly revolutionary console developer. I have a Sega CDx which is a Genesis, A Sega CD, and a cd player. It also has a line out + head phone jack with a AA battery supply in case you wanted it to be a Portable CD player, which it could be cause it's all about the size of the original CD add on. It's durable with an aluminum case and it works with the 32x. It's a real shame sega left the market when it could make such incredible products for it's time. COME BACK SEGA!!

Beat part about the Sega CD is that you can burn the games and play them that way. I had to do this decades ago when I had a Sega CD because lots of the good Sega CD games were 60 dollars up.
For instance, when snatcher, and keios flying squadron both cost 100 dollars at one point, I just burned them and played them that way.

When I bought my Sega CD in November 1992 it was with Marky mark and the Funky Bunch that made my video. Well worth the extra $45 at the time. I really dug that stuff. I still have the C+C Music factory. Some people hated it but the videos were quirky and cool and it was fun. It was totally new.

I fell hard onto the Sega CD in October 1992. It was hard to find at first. There was the TurboDuo available as an alternative (mostly) everyone wanted the 'new Sega' CD console. It was thrilling just watching this intro once it booted up. Originally, The Saturn was only supposed to be a combo system to replace the aging Sega CD/Genesis but ultimately the technology was bumped up to compete with Playstation, but the blueprint was nearly 4 years old. Sega was never really able to recover.

I have both models of the Sega CD. The Model 2 was given to me from a friend. The other one, the Model 1, I bought from a pawn shop as a set. It was a Sega Model 1/Sega CD Model 1 set, and I bought it for $150. I thought it was a pretty good deal, as the Sega CD Model 1 was in great shape. It's a pretty good addon, but it did not have too many good quality games for it. I still like it, as it has a certain appeal to it, and it has some great games.

Partially true. The japanese counterpart of the Sega Channel was the Super Famicom Satellaview modem, which allowed to play games with radio-quality music and voiceovers by voice actors. It spawned a lot of gems - like Radical Dreamers, translated by the Demiforce hacking group. But, indeed, Dreamcast was somewhat revolutionary.

Robo Aleste and Android Assault are awesome games.
    This guy rocks.
Also, if you have the Sega CD with a model 1, you can use the mixer, (that other hole in the back that he didn't talk about, connects to the head phone jack) and turn down certain SFX in Sega CD games with the model 1's volume slider.
This can make the Sega CD music louder.
    Pretty cool.

All modern consoles owe their roots to the Sega Dreamcast, which was the first console to: have a built in modem, support online play, have downloadable content & feature in-game voice chat. I also remember having Sega Channel for the Genesis, which just blew my mind. Other companies are barely starting to offer services like Sega Channel. I think Sega's only problem was that it was too far ahead of the pack for people to realize its greatness...

If only Factor 5 ported Mega Turrican to the Sega CD. I mean the music and graphics are amazing on the Genesis but just imagine how good it would look and sound on the Sega CD!
The Sega CD really was never pushed to it's potential. If only Sega pushed it more and had better advertising. Also something that makes me think here. Why isn't anyone making games for the Sega CD today? Its easy as hell to make your own CD's so why wouldn't devs make games for it and then sell the ROM images on the internet?

Also to note about the SegaCD is that it will also play CD+Gs and I think CD-i too. Sega probably thought people would use it as a cheap Karaoke machine.

One thing about the Sega CD games that a lot of people don't point out: Most of the games, from what I've checked, have amazing soundtracks and at the time, it was revolutionary that games such as Sonic CD, Earthworm Jim, Mickey Mania, etc. were getting CD-quality music. Also, if you bought a Sega CD game, you were getting your money's worth as you would be getting the soundtrack, that you can freely import onto your iTunes to put on your iPod, alongside the actual game.

I remember hearing that one feature of the model 2 Sega CD is that when you combined it with the Genesis, then it would end up giving the Genesis games you played more sound channels to work with, from the way the attached tech worked. I can't really verify it but I think I saw that a while back on a Genesis fansite where I was originally checking out stuff for modded consoles for better video output.

The SEGA CD didn't do that since you can't use the addon with a cartridge attached to the console (with the exception of the RAM expansion and games that required the 32X and the SEGA CD to work wich were only 2 or 3). The 32X on the other hand gave 2 extra channels to the Genesis games (that could be escalated up to 4+ channels thru software), one example is After Burner 2 Complete, it uses the ADPCM sound chip from the 32X alongside the YM2612 and the Texas Instruments sound chips from the console. But not many developers used the true potential of the 32X since it only had a life spawn of 6 months.
For the record a game from the SEGA CD could use the sound chips of the Genesis to enhance the audio, for example many games used the internal sound chips of the CD addon for the music and voice overs and the sound chips of the genesis for the sound effects.

The original Sega CD released in 1992 sat under the larger Genesis '16-Bit' console. When they redesigned the Genesis in mid 1993 it was smaller and then the side mounted Sega CD came along. (I never really liked the 2nd version)
The original was hauntingly the same size as a Saturn.

SEGA did make special cartridges called CD Back Up: Ram Cart that would save extra SEGA CD data. Very expensive though, but worthwhile for some of the FMV games

It's unfair that SEGA CD is so underrated. It's doesn't deserve the flak it gets. It's a great system, really I was proud to own one. Plus it did sell 6 million units. SEGA Dreamcast remains loved and it's predessor the "Ringedge" will be even greater.

Sega CD was pretty damn cool at the time. I loved Lunar and Lunar 2. Popful Mail was my favorite game at the time. The biggest flaw of this system that I haven't seen a reviewer talk about is that the memory is in the console itself. You can't swap out memory cards like a playstation; you need to delete your old save stuff if you run out of space. Either that or buy a second Sega CD just for data.

Carts are insanely durable, I got Toy Story in a game lot and I flung that game around with some friends (we genuinely hate that game) and we decided to pop it in after some really rough treatment...still worked. Carts are tanks

I can agree with that. Although released many great products, they just weren't selling for a number of different reasons. Maybe they just felt like they needed to keep pushing forward. In the end, they were a victim of their own "Blast Processing"... lol

Regarding build quality - there are a couple of variations of the model 2 that were released. I believe that the early releases (1993) were Japanese made, but the later releases were Chinese made. I have one of each, and I can definitely tell a difference between the plastic used, the optical assembly, et cetera.

Snatcher alone warrants the purchase of a Sega CD. Not to mention Lunar, Lunar 2, Popful Mail, Sonic CD, Final Fight CD, Vay, Robo Aleste, Silpheed, Eternal Champions, Shining Force CD, Dark Wizard and a ton more. That more than justifies your $20-40 dollar purchase of a Sega CD. I mean if you like RPG's this is a great system for you and really Snatcher is one of the best games ever made. It's a gift from the Gaming Gods of Digital Olympus.

@poliv67 It already happened. The Sega Genesis PAC was released for the Pioneer Laseractive. It was an add-on for a laserdisk player, and it cost $699.99. Also it would play Sega CD games on it if the PAC was inserted.

I've still got my Japanese Mega Drive 1 with a Japanese Mega CD 1, which are in near mint condition. There wasn't many games out for the Mega CD, plus it was expensive at lauch. It never took off, yet SEGA still released the Mega CD 2. The Mega CD 1 was actually made by Sony for SEGA, but I'm not sure who made the Mega CD 2. With the Mega CD 2, it always looked better with a Mega Drive 1, rather than with a Mega Drive 2. But all in all, the best combo was a Mega CD 1 with a Mega Drive 1.

@CervantesXV not entirely correct. It goes genesis, sega cd, sega 32x, sonic and knuckles, sega power base converter, then a master system game.
