Classic Game Room HD reviews the Sega Genesis Model 2 video game system console. The Sega Genesis Model 2 is the smaller Genesis that was released in 1994. The Sega Genesis was first launched in the united states in 1989 with the model 1, the model 2 is much smaller, was less expensive and had a few things removed like the headphone volume control. The Genesis is known as the Mega Drive (or Megadrive) in Europe and looks more or less the same. All Mega Drive (Megadrive) games play on the model 1 and model 2, depending on if yours is US, Japanese, European, etc... There is even a Model 3 MD which is the smallest of the bunch. This video reviews the build quality and features of the Model 2 vs. the Model 1. There are hundreds of amazing 16-bit games for the Genesis like Sonic the Hedgehog, Revenge of Shinobi, Jungle Strike and X-Men. Your Model 1 controllers will work with Model 2, they have the same connectors. Check it out, see if buying a Model 2 Sega Genesis is right for you, or if you should pick up a used Model 1. SEGA!
I got this model a couple months ago for $30 with Sonic 2 for free. AWESOMENESS INDEED!
Cool
I believe the Model 2 *DOES* have stereo, just with the RCA jacks instead of headphone output.
Yup, but the reviewer was implying it doesn't have stereo.
Model 2 does in fact have stereo sound, mine does!
Jesus invented the sega genesis
*bows head and prays a thankful prayer 🙏🏻
Well it is the first book of the Bible 😂
I am of the understanding that the Model 2 has poorer sound quality along with the removal of other cost cutting features. I would go model 1 all the way.
Not true! I have the half board model 2 and it has very clear video and really good stereo sound. I also have an original HDG Genesis too and the sound and video are identical far as I can tell on my tv!
"and the dog is barking for joy of the Sega Genesis" made me laugh. good imp.
This & the SNES was my main console when I first plade games as a toddler
...plade?!🤔
Nice english
Just picked one up with 2 controllers wires and 4 games for $40. Awesome deal in my opinion.
I bought one with 2 controllers, 1 game and no AC Adapter for $53 -_-
bolt853 JDM417 Baught one with 11 games, all wires, 1 controller, RF plugs, sonic 1 and mortal kombat new in boxes. all crisp for 50 bucks. Came with owners manual.
I got a model 1 non tmss version, previously used as a qa unit at acclaim for 15$
Alright! I loved this review! This is the only SEGA console I have, and I'm glad I got the model 2 Genesis!
I have a 1994 SEGA Model v2. It is my first console I ever had to play games on my old analog 1980's TV with a fake woodgrain turn-knob panal with a (Screw-On) analog antenna where I used to watch classic Cartoon Network before it was permanently on cable/sat as it is now. Unlike most modern consoles, it still works even to this very day 20+ years later on my game-rooms small tv next to my Gaming PC & Gameboy which I was playing my save of Pokemon Red. Overall, im happy I kept it all these years :) Edit: P.S there is no moding done to my sega ether, it still uses the orignal SEGA analog TV connector set to channal 4 and the original 1994 SEGA power brick the console came with :) P.S.S This WAS bought on releace day 1994 at my local game store by my dad, who then gave it to me :D
I used to have a Model 1 Genesis (not sure if it had the words "High Definition Graphics" on it) back in my young childhood years, though nowadays I have a Model 2, just for nostalgia's sake. :)
Yes very true, originally the Model 2 had a rough distorted sound output but it can be clean and clear sounding if you change the sound circuit yourself. I have a Model 2 console and I opened it up and changed the sound circuit myself with no experience in electronics and it sounds even better than Model 1 audio. Plus I made a video comparing the diffrence in audio from both Models and believe me Model 2 audio output shits on Model 1 output.
I have the RF Tv cable for the sega genesis which makes the picture blurry.
Actually the model 2 came out in 1993, not 1994. Just thought I'd point that out. ^^
you really must love this console if you Review all 3 models plus saying every time how much cooler model 1 is :D
Well I have this still, and by God is it amazing. I love absolutely everything about it, like how cartridges don't always work the first time or cartridges that are simply called 99 in 1 or 100 in 1. It's gotta be my favourite console I'm sorry playstation 1 but I just love genesis too much. I love your reviews by the way they're awesome
You need a model 1 SEGA CD... You aren't properly doing what nintendon't without a Model 1 Genesis and a model 1 Sega CD nicely stacked on top of each other.
I don't like any of the model 2 stuff much, but when you mix the two, it's just ugly. I'd accept, but look down on a full model 2 genesis/CD setup.
But then the 32X is model 2 style only.... it still basically goes with the model 1... but.. doesn't quite fit in...
Eh... fuck the 32X. I sold mine. I still have some 32X games though.
Model 1=superiority
Model 2=near blasphemy but mildly acceptable
Model 3=poop.
anonamatron this is the things I will say 2 u :
1.he doesn't have a sega cd model 1
2.The model 3 wasn't pure "poop" because there's one feature that the model 3 can what Genesis 1,2 don't is that it can play JAPANESE megadrive games.
anonamatron And also since he had a model 2 sega cd into model 1 gen. he just need an extender which can be bought seperately.
I'm sorry for offending your precious model 2 Genesis. I said it looks
ugly, not that it doesn't work. Even with the extender thing it still
looks uglier.
If you like it, rock on...
Model 3 is still poop.
I like the model 2, because I grew up on the model 2. Someday I would like to try model 1. I'd never own the model 1 in my life.
same here
The model 1 is the best one because it looks cool and has a headphone jack.
I love model 2 I still play my sega genesis
***** model 2 is perfect!!!
this version was my first console ever back in 1995 good stuff
My megadrive ruled, i think its amazing how much depth you go into about one model, i think its great .
Okay, i used the model 1 power supply for this by accident and had audio and video mess-ups (video wasnt best quality, many FM channels on the sound chip was struggling to output sound) would all this be put behind if i got a model 2 power supply or would the side-effects remain?
I've watched the Classic Game Room of Silpheed, it's one of the reasons I'm getting a SEGA CD. It looks awesome for mid-90's, and who doesn't like blowing stuff up, in 3D! xD
@DylanBStringer91 For me, the original Xbox. I had not owned a game console for 5 years when I was 15, so it reintroduced me to how fun it was to own your own video game system
the guy at toyz said the sega genisis 2 was the strongest system
i droped it atleast 3 times
if i dropped a snes 3 times it would probly break thats just a geuss
@fanofwaffles5 you must have a really young dad then
Audio quality is the biggest difference. Although some model 2's sound ok others sound like 16-bit death.
Yeah to hook up a Model 1 with a Sega CD and you won't get stereo audio unless you use a mixing cord.
Sega Mega Drive 2 was awesome! So many great games, amazing graphics for that time, I was super impressed. Loved this console.
I'll be buying the Sega Genesis Model 2 this coming weekend. I have the Sega Genesis Model 1 which is a lot of fun to play games with, but I'm also getting the Model 2 version for my entire video game collection
My cousin used to have the model 2. I would eventually buy it in 2010 at the Berryessa Flea Market prior to getting the HDG variant of model 1.
The music that was playing in the background is from Tae Bo basic VHS tape that I have.
I think the Model 1 Sega Genesis looks alot better than the Model 2 because I love the Design of it, how Big it is, and I think the Headphone Jack and Stereo Volume Indicator looks very Cool just like I think the The Fat Model PS2 is alot better than the PS2 Slim and the Original Xbox 360 is alot better than the Xbox 360 Slim and Xbox 360 E so yeah my Opinion is I think the Older Models (The Big Ones) are alot better than the Slim Models
Model 2 looks the best out of the three.
I have model 2 and I have truxton ^_^
The genesis is way more powerfull then the snes, not only does it have a powerfull 68000 proccesor but it also has a z80 chip wich is not only able to run SMS games, but it also can do psg sound and it even can work as a co,proccesor for the 68000 chip, for instance the Z80 can also control the 8bit audio dac for playing 8bit audio samples to free up power for the 68000 to do other tasks etc,,
My Older Sister still owns her Original Sega Genesis (Model 2) from when she was Little and I got to play it TWICE!!!!!!!!!!! She also still owns all of her Genesis Games from her Childhood
LMAO at the ending, it was perfect.
But but but but....... THE MODEL 2 IS VERY SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the model 1 is 10x sexier
Try scart rgb cable (:
Sadly the ext port of the genesis 1 has been removed on the model 2 and later model 1 genesis systems, what the heck was sega thinking to make them incompatible with the seganet adaptor,i hate if company's make things incompatible with eachother.
@Snotnarok Ah yes but It's been proven that model 2's have the better sound.
Model 2's carry an ASIC-BASED FM-YM2612 which can sample a bit better than a discrete FM-YM2612 found in an original model 1. The model 1 discrete FM-YM2612's suffer from quantization noise which is not present in later ASIC-BASED FM-YM2612's found in model 2's. But to achieve this higher quality sound from a model 2, the console's sound circuit has to be modified to get rid of that awful distortion which ruins them.
I think the distorted rough Model 1's are the later models that came out in 1993, the ones that don't say High Definition Graphics on the top and have that screen that loads everytime the game is turned on ''Produced By Or Lincensed By SEGA''.
How I got my Model 2 with perfect sound output was I connected some speaker wire to the audio sound chip resistors on the board, and wired it up to my RCA stereo plugs and connected it to my amplifier and it now has clean, clear sound, rough sound is gone.
I'm not sure if anyone has told you before but you can get a stranded AV (the red, white and yellow plugs) for your genesis. The genesis RF unit actually converts the AV into an RF signal.
I got one with my megadrive that I bought recently and it works grate. It's not even really a converter since it just takes the raw magadrive output and feeds it into your TV/VCR
I'm not sure if this is the same as the M1 but the M2 will not play all Master System games through the converter. Nice review.
There's one thing you forgot about the Model 2: horrid sound output and horrid video quality. Most Model 2 Genesis owners out there will agree that compared to the Model 1 Genesis, the Model 2 has notably inferior video quality(more blurring/pixelation, on top of noise on the vast majority of units) and the worst sound output of any Genesis model(static, sometimes straining). Some Model 2s are free of that, but those aren't as common as the ones that have crappy video/audio.
I love SEGA system games now. I only played about two SEGA games back in 1992 to late 1993. Sonic and Knuckles and Mortal Kombat II. SEGA systems had a extensive library. The games are still fun to play to this day for me. SNES is my favorite system though. I grew up with the SNES,PSX and N64. Wish SEGA would re-release some of the old games and a SEGA system that plays SEGA 32X, reg cartridges and SEGA CD games. Just wishful thinking i guess. Good review.
Thanks for the feedback zborgerd, Yeah, the actual software that came with my disc wasn't able to access my S-video port, and the composite looks really bad, I tested it with Crash Team Racing. So I went on a driver search and found an entirely new software that works pretty well, I'm having trouble accessing any sort of set-up menu though, alot of it is just tweaking visual stuff, brightness, hue, contrast, the like. Although it ran great viewing old family videos from 2000 =P
Nice video Mark, unfortunately I've never used a sega Genesis running video output above RF :-\
In other news, I just purchased a video capture PCI card (yay), it has composite and S-video jacks and works with Stereo. I just purchased a L+R to 3.5 adapter today. Unfortunately it doesn't look quite as good as an emulator...it's a little blurry when in motion, but stills look great. I'll have to work around with it, maybe I can change some settings, or just close some other programs...
I know UA-cam user Tiidonator made a whole new sound circuit specifically targeting those bad Genesis 2s. Are you using his circuit(there's a lot of talk about it on Sega-16 and GameSX)?
As a word of note, there's also a particular Genesis Model 1 that has the same distorted sound as the Genesis Model 2, but has clean video output.
The GBA was great because it was totally backwards compatible. The Wii is actually the first non-portable Nintendo system that supports old games. To my knowledge, anyway.
I'll stick with my SP and leave the DS to the young 'uns, who cannot see beyond the gimmicky dual screens and stick thing. GBA > DS.
Yet another AVGN comparison. I like him too, but these two reviewers are totally incomparable. For one thing, Mark does it entirely for fun, whereas the Nerd can actually profit from his hobby.
Mark has more spirit, and does what he likes when he wants to. Stop weighing up the two blokes and leave them to it.
If theres anything in the world i hate. then it is.
1. AC adapters. HATE THEM. hate how big they are. hate that you cant just use ONE that works with everything. and i hate when they block for any other plugs.
2.... Region lock... >>>>>:(
Wonderfull review of the good old Genesis. I think i got a Mega Drive as the very first console i got:)
I remember watching this and I got a Sega Genesis Model 1 and I saw the guy I bought it from gave me the wrong power adapter but it fit and I went to find the right power pack and i remembered Mark mentioning the Model No. (somehow) and there the Genesis lives again!
1993 not 94
actually it is 94
manufacturing only began in 93
@@TorutheRedFox
No, it was definitely the summer or fall of 1993 for the model 2.
I prefer the model 1
Take a credit card and a felt cloth, spray it with some windex and stick it in the cartridge slot a few times. Also get a few q-tips and spray them with windex and run it a few times over the cartridge connectors on the games. It will work if you do that.
@ClassicNintendoShow It's not possible with that output, but it is possible with the A/V connector if you have a special modified cable, and a monitor that supports the 15KHz signal that the Mega Drive outputs.
We should send in a notice about Mark, for Dirty Jobs. =P I'm sure his arms are tired from all of the filming and game playing, and all those keyboard keys, controller buttons and cables..very messy. Bring it Mike Rowe!
I'll fiddle with my settings for a while, but either way, Yoshi's Island still looked really nice playing on the monitor...maybe I won't need a TV in my new house at all =P(J/K, I like component too much)
I think so too. If I ever stumble across something with his voice in it, I'll never be able to take it seriously. I'll just keep thinking he's going to mention Bird Ass and such.
After a search in Google, my mind was blown.
Read this slowly. I couldn't believe it, myself: The Genesis was INTERNET READY OUT OF THE BOX. We are talking 1988 technology here!!
vintage-computer(.)com(/)vcforum(/)archive(/)index(.)php(/)t-11935(.)html
It seems that, like many gaming-related things, it only was ever used/released in Japan. These guys' project hasn't come to anything, but it's cool that they've discussed it.
...and then they ask "Hey, why was SEGA the best company, again?"
ahhhh...back when video games were just video games, before they turned into all serious interactive movies with loads of different ways to play and tons of choices on how to upgrade your character and where your actions affected the game world and all that malarky... ITS TOO MUCH RESPONSIBILITY I TELL YA! But wait a sec....that 32X add on...it looks like a cartridge within a cartridge...OMG ITS CARTRIDGE-CEPTION! BWWAAAAAARRRRRMMMMM!
@LegitFerret I think you mean the SNES (Super Nintendo)? The NES came out before that; in 1985, around the same time as the Sega Master System. Both were 8 bit systems. Later on in 89 or 90 (I forget) it was the 16 bit systems- Genesis and SNES.
Anyway thanks for the offer but I already have one, I meant I wish I could find a deal like that because it came with 9 games for $30 which is pretty good.
I got a model 2 genesis last year I wish I would of seen this video on how to hook it up because I had a model 1 which is WAY different to hook up I tried to hook it up the model 1 way and it got all fucked up :/ it's fixed now though. I hate that RF input because if you pull your genesis it pops right out of your TV and I have to find it in a maze of wires in the back of my TV >:(
does anyone know if the genesis 2 can use composite video? i have a rf unit from my dreamcast and my genesis 2 is coming with a rf but i want composite.... is it possible to use the one from a store or any other system? i dont know... i just dont want to have bad quality and am also planning on using it on my hd tv... by using rf it would be to much of a hassle... i kno i can get one for 10 on ebay but are there any other solutions?
You may not be having enough power running though the genesis (sound not working tends to be a side-effect from lack of power). If you have a after-market power adaptor and not a SEGA one, consider buying the SEGA one.
It could also be your video outputs, I suggest buying a composite cable for genesis 2 from eBay if you haven't already, since it gives much better sound and video quality. Don't use RF, RF cables "die" over time.
I like the first model better (I have two). It looks a lot classier and I like the headphone jack too. I remember playing Sonic the Hedgehog with headphones and it sounded awesome! Even though most of the time I did just pump it out of the tv speaker(s) anyway.
Funny ending :)
Oh yeah and while the Model 3 was even smaller than #2, I heard and have had experiences with it being more faulty when compared with the past two models.
The model 2 also supports stereo sound :D
You just need to buy the av cables for it. (red white and yellow).
The only true thing that the model 2 lacks over the model 1 is the head phone jack and the volume rocker but who really cares about those things? My model 2 is hooked up to my stereo system.
The model 3 on the other hand does lack stereo sound which kinda sucks. So overall if you want a genesis get the model 1 or 2. They are pretty much the same aside from their looks of course.
I find model 2 best for home and vacation. Model 3 is way portable but not stuff work on it like virtua racing. Well 50% of the model 3 do work with it. Anyhow I find model 2 easier to carry around and using a ps2 slim power supply is a bonus
@alec1382 It's actually easier to pull cartridges out of the model 2 console then the model 1 console as the cartridges don't sink all the way down in the model 2.
Okay, I just got a model 2 Sega Genesis today along with sonic 1 & 2 (loose carts) and Mortal Kombat 1 (CIB). Now I'm mostly a Nintendo guy when it comes to the older systems and I'm worried the NES, SNES, and N64 might pick on the new member of the family for being different. Think I should get a Dreamcast and maybe a Saturn to back the little guy up?
There's actually a few more differences between the M1 and 2, the powerbase converter doesn't work on the M2 and the sound is better on the M1 because of a different soundchip. Though later M1s have the M2 sound chip.
What does this mean? M1 has better sound, there's a few videos demonstrating and something on wiki on it.
MegaDrive 2 was my first ever games console, sadly broke with Saturn right round the corner though, causing my parents to defect to PlayStation. I'm thinking about picking up another one, should be good to my nostalgia and get a model 2, but at least everything you thought a MegaDrive could do, the Original model does it, so I'm drawn towards model 1..
Nope, if the console still turns on, then your dog chewing on it wouldn't of affected it.
You'll want to turn re-scanning your tv for the mega drive with the RF lead (I suggest you try this first). If that doesn't work, you can buy a A/V (composite) cable for mega drive II, which should solve the problem if all else fails.
@Nin10Guy ANd thatss exactly what I did still doesent mean they get mad. Only reason they got mad is cuz i couldn't play with them online. I bought one late tho
@DylanBStringer91 Mine too actually, whats your #1?
Do so! He is WRONG. Look:
watch?v=LIS8UTEFsac
The restriction is physical. In other words problem is that you will need to either mod the plastic, use a Mega Key or get the European-exclusive version the uploader mentioned to me.
Also
4:10 What's the connector in the far left for?
Born in 1996
Grew up with Sonic 1, 2, 3 and knuckles
I beet them all in order: 1, 2, 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic 3 and Knuckles
(plus chaos and super emeralds)
And when I beet Sonic 3 and Knuckles, I was just crying with happiness
oh
and it was on model 2 genesis
The model 2 Sega Mega-drive/Genesis (Region depending) Was the first classic consolie i owned. It came with sonic 2. It was an original that was given to my by my aunt and have never stopped playing it since. The difference between the PAL one is that the power and reset buttons are red.
The Sega Genesis Model 2 looks like the Mega Drive 2 in the UK!
I suppose it was because in the USA, the Mega Drive turned to the Genesis.
The only difference is the buttons are black, unlike the red on the UK version, and the UK version doesn't have the label "Genesis" on top.
Mess around with your TV settings.
When playing the Genesis with it, switch the TV mode to display 4:3. Some TVs also have a "game mode", for displaying older consoles better.
I have a 22" HDTV, and with the composite cables, my Mega Drive works great with it. :P
I know it was pretty cool at the time CCowell125 but I'm just stating my gripes that it's not compatible with the Sega CD or 32X. Then again that matters little to many since they didn't have many great games. But I just bought a sega CD my self so it means something to me haha.
"You hold it down and I'll go get the peanut better" Ummm Model 1 I think maybe you should hold it down after all you are the size of a dishwasher!
I have the extension piece for the model one genesis, for the model 2 cd.No spill off.Your game needs it..Cause it makes it complete ..And awesome!
Sure did its just sometimes ebayers use poor quality photos or have a lot of Megadrivea! Last time I saw ones going cheap I thought 'Aaah maybe I will get lucky' no such luck :( I don't think they are too rare though, I'll have to keep looking!
I've got a Model 1 Genesis with Model 2 Sega CD, and mine fits on the Sega CD base just fine because it came with a little extension that screws into the bottom, making the Seca CD base long enough to fit the entire model 1 Genesis.
When time goes by, the prices for these consoles just skyrocket. I remember getting the model 2 Genesis in 2010 for $25 and cartridge games at my local game store were between $1-$5 now ever since covid and inflation this console is like $50-$60
@alec1382 Try removing SEGA Master System cartridges from the cartridge slot? They are definitely the hardest carts to pull out of the console.
I have a genesis model 2. I've got a few games like streets of rage 2, sonic 1 and 2. Now I'm looking to collect more games for it. I have come here in hopes that I can get recommend to some great games. Thanks in advance.
You have to perform the Genesis ritual to the SEGA shamans, you'll need a Tome of Starflight, a holy Rock 'n' Roll Racing cartridge, and the Controller of Truth & Turbo.
Or, yeah, you could just rip it off... :)
yeah just got my model 1 mines a dif one though since it was released in 1991 when they were sellin it for 150 soo thats why iff u have model 1 and it doesn't have the high def graphics logo on it i beleave.
@Snotnarok No problem, also you're talking about the Game Gear basically since it's the same hardware and shared some games. So if you don't want to fork out a lot for that, Game Gear is 200 times cheaper haha.
@communistrecords Bit late but...
I know! It was sooooooo sweet!
Sonic 1, 2, and 3 was the best on the PAL version due to the slowed down 50Hz from 60Hz. Personally, as I said, the games were too badass to be on hypo pills.
This is Mark's job so he has to make some money from it. But yeah AVGN (who I like) is completely different from Mark who takes a more journalistic approach at reviewing games and hardware and other things.
I hate to break it to you. But the Angry Video Game Nerd explained that the Sega G looks like a toilet, and you have to keep on stacking the 32x on top of each other. And wires get everywhere causing to be a mess. =/
@communistrecords
Yeah, and the only lockout was the different shape of the Japanese cartridge slot. On a UK version you can play the American games 'cos there wasn't a lockout chip.
(I think)
Well here in Greece (and for all the Europe) the title Genesis is Mega Drive and I have this model.Mortal Kombat,Street fighter 2,Sonic the Hedgehog,Rambo,Shinobi,Strider.........Those times!!!!!!!
I don't know why they didn't just call the Genesis the Mega Drive in the U.S.
I'm from the UK where we use PAL 50Hz instead of NTSC 60Hz, i know PAL is slower but has a better resolution...
If you really wanted a smaller version, you could get the Nomad... my friend had one and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
instead of using the model 1 for stereo, why not buy some rca cables for the model 2 and just plug it in to any TV and get good stereo sound. I found some on Amazon for about 2 dollars.
Probably, apparently you can buy a older 9pin PC game pad input to USB and use your atari/genesis controller with no mods at all. So the whole 9 pin thing seems to be fairly universal.
A "composite" cable is those three prongs; yellow, red and white. All TVs built after the 80's should of composite hook ups, you don't need a HDTV to deplay a composite picture. :P
Yeah, good point; but at $30, it would of been good as a spare or for travel use.
That said, I just got my Model 2 from ebay in the mail today. And I'm off to get a SEGA CD aswell. =P
