    Classic Game Room reviews the ATARI JAGUAR video game console!! The 64-bit Atari Jaguar does what Nintendon't. It plays Kasumi Ninja!! Atari's stylish 64-bit game system had potential but suffered from a poor launch date and awful game library..

    Atari got body slammed by Nintendo, shot in the head by Sega, its corpse defiled by Sony, and finally got cut to pieces by Microsofts Energy Sword. All in all, a pretty bad 30 years for Atari.

      That’s actually a very good campaign and the Atari hardware was really good. What killed the Jaguar was Sam Tramiels inability to play nice with 3rd party developers. When I visited Atari on several occasions it was obvious that the tools for the Jaguar were lacking and only the internal devs were working on games because Sam was so horrible at courting devs. If you gave the Jaguar to Capcom or Konami the story would have ended differently.

    I have a Jaguar, and I actually kind of like it. In regards to the question, "Was it a bad system?" I think you need to define what makes a good system. As a piece of hardware, I think it was actually quite good. It came out about halfway between SNES and PS1. If you look at games like Alien vs Predator, Battlemorph, and Rayman, I think it looks pretty good for being half way between those system. But then there's the other way to look at a system's value. Was it a good deal for the customers that bought them? I hate to say it, but no. Atari was nearly bankrupt and no one else put much effort into developing for it. So despite having good hardware, the very limited number of games were mostly shoddy uninspired shovel ware. If you liked button mashing arcade games, it did have some decent games in those genres, but there was very little that reflected the direction games were taking on the PS1 or N64.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 5 років тому +1

      If it had of had less power and released two years earlier it would have been a raging success but it actually got released right at the end of the Cartridge games cycle.
      The N64 was a disaster as it simply got smashed by the playstation and the dreamcast was far too late to the game.
      By the time Dreamcast started to get traction the Playstation was selling hundreds of millions of games.

    Amazing to think that, despite the Jaguar being massively underappreciated, it was partly responsible for the SEGA Saturn's initial hardware designs. SEGA took notice of the Jaguar when the system was revealed and started development on what would become the Saturn in an attempt to compete with it.

      I had a Jaguar with nearly a complete library of games. Someone seemed to need worse than I and stole it. I myself liked the system. It had a lot of potential but, never had a developer who tried to push its capabilities. Atari didn't seem to support it either. With just a handful of good games the Jaguar could have been a major contender in the console wars if developers would have done their job rather than go after low hanging fruit such as Nintendo and Sega.

    I actualy love the Atari jaguar it may have crapped out by late 1995 however it had a strong start of great games in 1993 and 1994 like cybermorph trevor mcfur in the crescent galaxy alien vs predator doom zool 2 and even a few not many however a few great games in 1995 and 1996 like rayman and fight for life. so overall the Atari jaguar is very underated game system that deserves some respek on its name #atarijaguarforthewin ps and although the original Atari jaguar controller sucks the Atari jaguar pro controller released in 1994 is awesome #atarijaguarftw

    • @joelressler5619

      Holy crap! Someone else that likes Trevor McFur and Fight for Life! McFur got trashed by the critics, and while it did have it's short comings, in some ways I think it was far better than many of the side-scrolling-shooters of the day. And Fight for Life was slow, but it required careful timing and you absolutely needed to memorize the special moves. It was no Tekken, but if you spent some time with it, it was actually a decent game.

    I don't know Mark...I disagree with this review. The Jaguar was cutting edge in 1993/1994. For the time it had the very best version of both Wolfenstein 3d and Doom you could get on consoles. Alien vs. Predator was unlike anything we had ever witnessed on consoles before. It also had a near perfect version of NBA Jams that was a real showstopper. I don't understand why you think the tech behind the Jaguar was outdated in 1993/1994. I mean, hardware wise it murders the Sega Genesis/Sega CD and the Snes quite soundly. None of those consoles or add-on could run AVP for example. Further, it was capable of throwing insane amounts of sprites on screen and did Super Scaler games like nobodies business. This was a very rare miss for CGR....damn and I wanted to trademark Melt-O-Vision for myself.

    An excellent system that was ahead of its time, similar to the 3DO from the same era. Both were cutting edge for consoles at the time and failed for various reasons. The Jaguar failed due to the sheer amount of 16-bit titles that were released. Quick, dirty SNES ports, although most improved on the SNES counterparts. Anyone who was involved in the gaming scene back then will remember the dirty word that was 2D and/or sprites. This is were Mark gets it fundamentally wrong. Nobody got a SNES or Genesis instead of a Jaguar, they just didn't purchase anything as they were waiting for PSX/Saturn. There was a massive video game slump in 1994. It was 3D or bust and even though the Jaguar had some impressive titles such as Alien v Predator, Iron Soldier and Tempest 2K, it had a ton of SNES type games. The singular reason why the Jaguar failed was its release date. It released within months of the Sony Playstation. In Japan there was literally only a few days between release dates. Everyone had already seen the 3D goodness of the PSX. A revolution in gaming. A console characterised by Bubsy, Rayman and other 2D games never stood a chance. As a niche, collectors console now it is worth owning and the prices reflect that. Maybe if the Jaguar released two years earlier it may have had some success.

    Turbo GrafX-16?!? That was Dead in North America before the Jaguar Launched! However wildly popular in Japan as the PC Engine even in 93/94! 🙄Still almost an all time underrated console with a pretty decent library of almost 100 Hu-card games to play! 😎

    We bought a Jaguar because it was cheap and 64 bits...We also bought a Sega CD. Yea we took a couple L'S in the early 90's. Although Sega CD was alot better than the Jaguar IMO lol

    I still have my Jaguar that I got when I was about 14 years old during a so-called "fire sale" at a local toy store. I have to agree with what he said. The system itself is great it's just that there aren't any game for it worth playing. Syndicate was pretty good but that's the only one I can think of. Also, you could totally use Sega Genesis controllers on your Jaguar. The console was even designed around that same input scheme.

    • @andycraig7734
      @andycraig7734 2 роки тому

      No, as there are three rows of pins on the Jaguar joystick connector. Same as Atari STe computer, possibly more rare than the Jag!

    • @tarrker
      @tarrker 2 роки тому

      @@andycraig7734 I can literally do it right now. You can even use old Atari controllers although, you wouldn't want to. It's also the same controller port used by the C64. I'll make a video about it once I finally dust off my Commodore. :)

    I just wish Atari would have tried to get ports of popular Arcade games of the mid 90's like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 for the Jag. That way the library would have been fleshed out better.

    I remember one time (about a hundred years ago) I was going to go to Babbages to trade in my Genesis (and my 32X...yes, I had one of those), my SNES, my Atari Lynx (YES, I had one of those, too, and I loved it...certainly more than GameBoy, which...I also...had, and was gonna trade in) for an Atari Jaguar. Why? Because...DOOM! Not just that it had DOOM, but it had a LAN feature so that you could deathmatch with your buddy who might also have happened to have owned a Jaguar (unlike the 32X version which did not....hey, I couldn't afford a PC back then!)....good luck on that, right? Oh, and there was also Aliens Vs Predator, but I don't think it had deathmatch capability. (Good Lord, this is the first time I ever actually got to see that game in action.... or should I say "inaction". What a klunky looking game!) Anyhoo, the rep at Babbages said: "Dude, trust me. Hang on to all that gear, and trade it in on a Sony PlayStation when it comes out. You will not regret it." A truer foresight by a mortal was never spoken...well...other than Orwell's "1984", or the movie "Demolition Man". I traded in for a PlayStation a couple months later, and was overjoyed. Not only did it play a great launch of games, but it had link capability, so that you could deathmatch DOOM (when it released for PS) with a buddy who also had a PlayStation! That wasn't the only game that could do that...and that functionality is the primary reason I bought a PlayStation.

    It was a good system worthier of a better fate. The sad thing was they made to powerful of a system before people were ready to program games for it. Only 4 games for it were selling well, and that wasn't enough to keep it alive. "Alien vs Predator," "Dune," "Wolfenstein," and "Tempest 2000."

    Wait...the Jaguar was outdated by the time it came out!? What? The Jaguar for its time was an amazing console depending on what you played. Actually had Atari given the Jaguar another 6 months in development (many of tge devs behind it wanted the extra time but the stupid money men said no) it really woukd have been something hardware wise. There was an issue with the memory and had it been fixed it would have easily ran with a PSX and N64. I also think Atari's inclusion of a 68000 processor (16-bit) was a mistake. At the very least they should have locked it out and only allowed its use as a proper co-processor.
    At any rate the games one might want to check out for the machine-
    Doom
    Wolfenstein
    AVP
    Tempest 2000
    Iron Soldier
    Raiden
    NBA Jam TE
    Rayman
    Cannon Fodder
    Worms
    10 games is enough to warrant a purchase in my book. These 10 games were very good and a few were truly special like AVP, Cannon Fodder, and Iron Soldier.

      ***** The Wii U has got quite a few good games now, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Bros U, Super Mario 3D world, Monster Hunter 3, Sonic Lost World, Legend Of Zelda Windwalker and a massive selection of the best Nes/Snes and soon too be added N64.The Xbox One also has a lot of good games considering it is still in its first year of launch, and you don't get many games released in the first year of launch. They have Forza 5, Watch Dogs, Trials Fusion, Dead Rising 3, Thief, Wolfenstein the new order and Titanfall if you like FPS games anymore.

    This console is stupid expensive now. Glad I picked one up. Missed opportunity by Atari. Great marketing. “Do the math” “64 bit” wasn’t even a true 64 bit machine. Just 2 32 bit processors.
