It's an anti-nuke song, telling us that to avoid nuclear Armageddon we need to learn to love, or the children of tomorrow will be the children of the grave. From the end of WWII to around the end of the '80s, nuclear war was very topical. We all lived with this fear, consciously or unconsciously, that at any time someone was gonna push a button and the world would be annihilated. I grew up seeing news stories about the arms race and documentaries showing what nuclear war would do, with graphic recreations of nukes going off and vaporizing cities, etc. The basement of the middle school I went to was a bomb shelter too. It's been a while since I heard that song, but I don't remember that one drum track being quite so pronounced. It might be a remix in which they turned those drums up a bit too hot. Or I could be misremembering.
They are talking about the threat of nuclear war. He is saying that people need to stand up to politicians and to basically spread peace and love. You definitely got the gist of what the song is about BJ 👍😁 ❤
Bill plays his drum orchestrationally, he talks about it often in interviews. It does sound like timpani plus he has his little rototoms on this one. Asia has a great ear.
The word you were looking for is Kettle Drums. Those are the big ones. But actually what you are hearing are drums called roto toms and they can be tuned up and down by turning their rims. Bill is playing them, a roadie is turning them as he plays and they added a phase shifter to give it the swirling sound.
The big copper drums are called "tympani" when used in a fancy classical music orchestra. They have pedals that allow the percussionist to vary the pitch. But anyway, a tympani is not what was used on this song. 😄
LYRICS: Revolution in their minds, the children start to march Against the world in which they have to live & all the hate that's in their hearts They're tired of being pushed around and told just what to do They'll fight the world until they've won and LOVE comes flowing through, yeah Children of tomorrow live in the tears that fall today Will the sunrise of tomorrow bring in peace in any way? Must the world live in the shadow of Atomic fear? Can they win the fight for PEACE or will they disappear? Yeah! So you children of the world listen to what I say If you want a better place to live in spread the word today. SHOW the world that LOVE is still alive you must be brave! OR you children of today are "children of the grave", yeah *Ending apocalyptic whispers of the end of life "children"....."children"...
This was the foundation that would build to the metal genre, This was 1971, metal did not exist until the ende of the decade, but Sabbath songs would inspire the first metal bands.
One of the heaviest albums ever, Master of Reality spawned several sub-genres of metal and is Ikonic in music history. Also on it, try Sweet Leaf, that kicked off the album on a 'high' note. Utterly great song and album, forever music for sure. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
(07:31) BJ hit it right on the head when he called this a signature Sabbath song. Not only was their music heavy, so was the subject of their lyrics. While others were singing about peace, love and flowers, Sabbath was addressing the serious issues of the day (like religion, drug addiction and nuclear war). As the kids might say today, "They kept it 💯% (real)." 😄
From the album Master of Reality. You can hear the band's sound evolving from album to album. I will say this and Volume 4 were pretty close together as far as mix, then they step it up again on the next 3 albums. Closed Captioning will help with lot's of rock - not always clear and usually covering themes which may elude the listener.
Children of the Grave = the children killed in war. It's a war protest song. Black Sabbath was my dad's first concert, and I have seen Sabbath two times with my dad. (Ozzy not Dio)
Sabbath without Ozzy isn't Sabbath. Don't get me wrong Dio has his place but he isn't the voice of Sabbath. (I'm going to get slated for that comment). Saying that I saw Sabbath in 2016 with Tommy K on drums it was great but would have preferred to have seen Bill W on drums.
One of the greatest bands of all time. Best quote ever from James Hetfield of Metallica “Black Sabbath debuted at the Monterey Pops Music Festival in the late 60s and all the bands were singing about love and flowers. Then Black Sabbath took the stage and they were SCARY” Lmao Would’ve loved to be there
At the time they were considered the first heavy metal band. Of course many others followed Sabbath but at the time we had heard nothing like it. I recently joined so I'm not sure all the guitarists that youve listened to but I'll make a list to send to you guys and if you ever get anytime there you go. After 55 years listening and playing I know a few.
I was in a middle school metal band in 74 and we played this song and other sabbath songs, this song is still amazing to this day! Black Sabbath are the godfathers of metal!!
Tony Iomi supposedly said, "People will pay money to see scary movies. Maybe they'll pay to listen to scary music." And Sabbath was born. They were grossly mistepresented in the media for years. They were never about 'devil worship.' They were always warning about what could happen if humanity didn't get its collective $hit together. Their songs also offered messages of hope. Arguably their greatest song (that did all the above) is War Pigs. Listen to it and weep. Then pray, because its message is still possible. Those four musicians revolutionized music in too many ways to count. I'll never stop loving them for it.
That's pretty much correct. They saw a long line of people in front of the movie theater waiting to see a movie that was playing, a 1963 horror movie starring Boris Karloff called "Black Sabbath", directed by Italian horror movie director Mario Bava. They were amazed that people would spend their hard earned money to watch a scary movie, then why wouldn't they pay to listen to scary music. They were wanting to get away from the flowery, psychedelic music they were playing under the name Earth. Their bassist, Geezer Butler, also wrote a song called "Black Sabbath", which was inspired by an incident that happened to him one night. He had read a novel on the occult given to him by Ozzy Osbourne. Butler was heavily into the occult and he had painted the walls of his bedroom matte black and hung up several inverted crucifixes. The book supposedly freaked Butler so much that he stopped reading it halfway through and laid it on a table by his bed and then went to bed. Sometime, after midnight, something startled him and he woke up and saw a black figure standing at the foot of the bed, pointing at him. The next morning, he reached for the book and the book had disappeared. This incident inspired their first single, called "Black Sabbath" (What is this that stands before me? Figure in black that points at me.) At least, that's the story the best I can remember. I don't know if he painted his room before he read the novel, or after. I definitely don't know why he did that. To me that seems like asking for trouble ,like messing with a ouija board. I also don't know if the band's name came from the movie, or from the song, or both.
The message then is the message today, the people need to stand up and ban together to change this world and rid it of the war mongers who make money off war. If not, we are destined to a bad ending.
Your exactly right...some of those drum parts gave a tribal feel..I wouldnt doubt for a second to get that drum sound they had a upside down 5 gallon plastic bucket mic'd up to get that sound effect...simple yet effective
I was in 8th grade in '71 when this came out, and it sounds just as good today. I was blessed to be able to see them on their farewell tour in 2016 (minus Bill Ward). Ozzy was nails, and didn't stumble over any lyrics. At the time, this was simply rock. There was no "heavy metal" at the time, although they were definitely trailblazers for what was to come in later eras.
So you children of the world listen to what I say If you want a better place to live in spread the word today Show the world that love is still alive, you must be brave Or you children of today are children of the grave, yeah
I just head the song with headphones the first time. Extreme stereo effects to make it bounce around your head. You mike tom toms individually and pan them more or less right or left.
If you want a slow trippy groove from Black Sabbath, listen to "Planet Caravan" If you are looking for some epic Sabbath, try "Symptom of the Universe" Enjoy.
The ending of the song after all the singing and instruments stop and its just someone saying "Children of the Grave" reminds me of the "Friday the 13th" sound, when Jason is chasing someone. I don't know, or is it just me lol?
I believe that children are the future, so show the world that love is still alive you must be brave....or you children of today are children of the grave.....Yeah
Sabbath always wrote songs against politicians , they wrote love songs , ballads , rock n roll. To me they were never a heavy metal band . They were what Rock n Roll was suppose to be Pure . Their influences were Hendrix , Clapton and others
Just recently subscribed and started watching your videos and have enjoyed them. I'm more of a metal head but appreciate the mix of what you play. Looking forward to watching more. And definitely keep reminding everyone to hit the like button. I subscribe but I always forget to hit that damn like button!!! I seriously have to start remembering that!!
BJ nailed it "Tribal"! Ozzy literally calls out for the youth to revolt against our evil world leaders hell bent on destroying humanity over lust for power, greed and ego. It was a plea to rise up before it's too late. Just like right now!
The drums were always something I thought of as the real standout on this song. Then...I believe I heard some of what I thought were the drums, was actually Geezer on the bass. Either way, the rhythm section are the stars on this tune!! 👍
If ya'll like this check out the White Zombie/rob zombie cover... it's more "obviously" modern. LOL. But still great. I believe it's on the Album "Nativity In Black" a tribute to Black Sabbath.
YOU CAN FIND ANOTHER VERTION OF SONG WAR PIGS OF BLACK SABBATH, WITH ALTERNATIVE LYRICIS DURIN SOME TIME BLACK SABBATH SUNG THE WAR PIGS SONGT WITH THAT LIRICS FIRST, THE FIRST NAME USED FOR WAR PIGS WAS "WALPURGIS" EVEN YOU CAN FIND VIDEOS OF BLACK SABBATH SINGIN WITH THAT LIRYCS IN YOU TUBE, EVEN PARANOID HAS AND ALTERNATRIVE LYRICS VERTION TOO
He's not speaking to the children of the grave. He's warning all the people of the world if they do not live by light and love that the youth will become children of the grave, and preaching against atomic fear, by that he means war. This is a very lighthearted message of goodness, but with the undertones of the darkness that surrounds the consequences of not heeding the warning. You guys should have the lyrics up. The song was pointing out issues plaguing humanity and calling on those that will spread peace and love to address those issues, to avoid being ALIVE but dead to situation. God makes the same point! Good to see black folks checking out "old white dudes" music. :-}
Great track/reaction guys!👏🏼👍🏼The Godfather’s of metal..it’s a song against nuclear war you guys got it..keep up the good work you two love the channel god bless🙏🏼
I forget what they're called, but those 'shallow' drums with basically no shell and you can tune them by twisting the ring the head is stretched over . . . . I looked it up - Roto Toms
Bill & Geezer are one of the best rhythm sections in ROCK History !!! ;)
Was just gonna say the same, amazing!!!
Amen brother
They are the best fuck anyone else
Them and John Bonham and John Paul Jones
and Tony the best riff man ever....saw them in 73 up till their last show in nj i believe in 2015...

Might be because you were use to hearing it on Vinyl record.🤣
Right on brother
What you said. ✌❤😢
These guys invented heavy metal, and young Ozzy is a powerhouse vocalist.
No. But close. Deep purple did
@@leescarpelli3515 nope
@devrajjj8787 deep purple was before sabbath. they were a heavy bluesy band but sabbath is my fav.
They are talking about the threat of nuclear war. He is saying that people need to stand up to politicians and to basically spread peace and love. You definitely got the gist of what the song is about BJ 👍😁 ❤
Kim....people need to vote right in the US! You guys are in terrible conditions over there!
a lot of people miss the background drums.. way to go girly. you are really listening.
Not to be a curmudgeon, but the drums are really pronounced on this track. Hard for anyone to miss, frankly.
Another masterpiece . A great example of hard hitting lyrics and off the scale musicianmanship.
Bill plays his drum orchestrationally, he talks about it often in interviews. It does sound like timpani plus he has his little rototoms on this one. Asia has a great ear.
More Black Sabbath Please. Great Ozzy Vocals and Heavy Metal Riffs on *"Symptom Of The Universe"* from 1975 *Sabotage* Album. Thanks for this one!
If you want to go with an epic and interesting Sabbath song then listen to Hand of Doom.
I'm pretty sure they've already done a reaction to it. It's just been a while.
From the Grandfather's of metal. So many riffs of today are offshoots of Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi.
Great song from the master of reality album
Black Sabbath:
* Electric Funeral
* Hand of Doom

A couple of other Black Sabbath songs you might like are "A National Acrobat" and "Into The Void"
Governments go to war. Countries and their citizens pay the price. Love you guys. Thanks for what ya'll do.
A great driving song by yourself just loud as hell flying down the interstate. a classic in my book
Black Sabbath is my favorite band 😎 You should check out more from them
The message is timeless. If we can't learn to love each other, we will destroy each other.
Well this should be a highly viewed reaction video. This is a legendary gem.
One of the greatest bands of all time.
Best quote ever from James Hetfield of Metallica
“Black Sabbath debuted at the Monterey Pops Music Festival in the late 60s and all the bands were singing about love and flowers. Then Black Sabbath took the stage and they were SCARY”
Lmao
Would’ve loved to be there
A revolution against Hate and for Love and Peace. Lyrics were so on point when this was released in 1971 while the Vietnam War was still raging.
At the time they were considered the first heavy metal band. Of course many others followed Sabbath but at the time we had heard nothing like it. yeah one their best and one of the best drummers...top ten rock drummer.
What an era for drummers Ward,Moon,Bonham, Paice, Kerslake,Brewer,....best era for drummers .
I was in a middle school metal band in 74 and we played this song and other sabbath songs, this song is still amazing to this day! Black Sabbath are the godfathers of metal!!
Bill Ward on this song is what takes it from being a great song to one of the top 5 Sabbath songs
The drum sounds are actually called "roto toms" their tuning is somewhat unique.
Tony Iomi supposedly said, "People will pay money to see scary movies. Maybe they'll pay to listen to scary music." And Sabbath was born. They were grossly mistepresented in the media for years. They are the forefathers of metal, inspiring a plethora of legendary bands. One word...Timeless...nuffsaid💯🔥💪👹🤘
The talent level of the 60s and 70s will never be seen again.
my favorite Sabbath song ever.
The message then is the message today, the people need to stand up and ban together to change this world and rid it of the war mongers who make money off war. If not, we are destined to a bad ending.
Spot on guys. Sabbath are the greatest band of all time..

I was in 9th in 71 ....we called it Acid Rock...BW and GB kill it on COTG
I saw them soooo many times in concert and this was the song that got us all going crazy and they would play this for about 15 mins!!!
My favorite Sabbath tune !!!!
So you children of the world listen to what I say
If you want a better place to live in spread the word today
Show the world that love is still alive, you must be brave
Or you children of today are children of the grave, yeah
Ozzy is amazing! ❤👵🏼☮️💜
Kettle drums, great song choice.
This song spoke for all the minds of our enlightened generation
I just head the song with headphones the first time. Extreme stereo effects to make it bounce around your head. You mike tom toms individually and pan them more or less right or left.
Love your channel and I love you’re listening to the kings- Sabbath.
If you two really want your minds blown, react to Black Sabbath “Supernaut” from 1972.
And Wheels of Confusion!
Love it !! Love you, Love Black Sabbath !!
Should take a listen to sabbath bloody Sabbath
ONLYYYYYYY 52 YEARS AGO YOU GUYS!!! 😮😊 FROM THEIR 71 GEM ALBUM ( MASTER OF REALITY )
If you want a slow trippy groove from Black Sabbath, listen to "Planet Caravan"
If you are looking for some epic Sabbath, try "Symptom of the Universe"
Enjoy.
If you want to hear Black Sabbath on Congos , listen to Planet Caravan . It's just bass , acoustic guitar & Congos .
Black Sabbath is the founder of Heavy Metal according to most musicians.
The ending of the song after all the singing and instruments stop and its just someone saying "Children of the Grave" reminds me of the "Friday the 13th" sound, when Jason is chasing someone. I don't know, or is it just me lol?
I never thought of that, but you're right. It does sound like that.
Like the beat and driving sounds in this song...
I believe that children are the future, so show the world that love is still alive you must be brave....or you children of today are children of the grave.....Yeah
Yes! Ozzy! "Will they win the fight for peace or will they disappee-ahh, yeeaaahhh"
Sabbath always wrote songs against politicians , they wrote love songs , ballads , rock n roll. To me they were never a heavy metal band . They were what Rock n Roll was suppose to be Pure . Their influences were Hendrix , Clapton and others
Lighting and set getting better and better!
Timpani (kettle) drums. 👍
The drums are incredible.
One of if not my favourite tracks by Sabbath geezer is a monster he drives the track
these old Sabbath tunes always carried a message........
yeah, one of sabbath's finest 🤘🏻
Fairies wear Boots is another great
intro sound like Tympani . and along with Bill Ward playing, Timbales sound like through the whole song.
Now, THIS is one for which you need the lyrics (which you guys usually do). LOL Still killer lyrics (once you get to read them) and music!
Bill Ward is a different beast behind a drum kit, the best!!!
The drums you are thinking about are called timpani or kettle drums.
Ooooh, that bass! Geezer Butler
I heard once that “without Black Sabbath there is no heavy metal “ right on!
BJ nailed it "Tribal"! Ozzy literally calls out for the youth to revolt against our evil world leaders hell bent on destroying humanity over lust for power, greed and ego. It was a plea to rise up before it's too late. Just like right now!
4:30 is a sick metal riff...so heavy
Hell yea! Great choice!
You guys have to hear "Fairies Wear Boots". It's about what happens when smoking and tripping is all that you do.
Have a pic from Geezer. Best show I've ever seen. It was painfully loud but perfect!

Black Sabbath 1968-eternity🤘
He's not speaking to the children of the grave.
He's warning all the people of the world if they do not live by light and love that the youth will become children of the grave, and preaching against atomic fear, by that he means war.
This is a very lighthearted message of goodness, but with the undertones of the darkness that surrounds the consequences of not heeding the warning.
You guys should have the lyrics up.
Because this was not simply for its time but this was for a message for all time and most definitely is still applicable today!
Drums were played by Sticks.
Bill Ward is probably Rock/Metal's most underrated drummer, even though he's probably one of the best of all time with an incredible range. He had a jazz background and it shows.
The originators of heavy metal
Let's get a reaction to this song from the 1999 Live DVD The Last Supper! Been rockin to this song for 40 years...Lol
The song was pointing out issues plaguing humanity and calling on those that will spread peace and love to address those issues, to avoid being ALIVE but dead to situation. God makes the same point! Good to see black folks checking out "old white dudes" music. :-}
The drum sound is Bill Ward hitting the rims of the drums.
Stone Age Drum Sampling..😎👍😁✨😉
Still relevant today... maybe more than ever.
Drink a ice cold frosty mug of your favorite beer, smoke some Fine Pine and CRANK UP THE SABBATH...FUCK YEAH!!!🍺🍻🥃🚬🚬🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🌲🌲🌲
Thank you!!
Sabbath always wrote songs of the future
Bill is playing timpani drums as an overdub. Kettle drums.

🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Drummer is killing it
good strong lyrics, i like it
I think you're thinking of kettle drums but they're not ☺️ Bill Ward is a great drummer
I forget what they're called, but those 'shallow' drums with basically no shell and you can tune them by twisting the ring the head is stretched over . . . . I looked it up - Roto Toms
Wow, I went from your Charlie Pride, to Black Sabbath! Like CHICKEN AND WAFFLES 😊👍
