Type O Negative - In Praise of Bacchus.....would love to see your analysis of this one off their album October Rust. Aside from the sounds of this song being great, I believe it has one of Peter Steele's lowest notes I've heard come out of him, amazes me every time.
@The Charismatic Voice could you please do a reaction to Avenged Sevenfold’s Crimson Day it’s quite a beautiful song and the singer really uses a newer approach than usual
I always thought that Dio had the incredible ability (at least I perceive it like this) to "split" the voice ....one perfect picht and the other slightly dissonant at the same time ......obviously it is not possible but this is my feeling
Hi, I just wanted to mention something! You mentioned how this is younger Dio, and well, compared to the 2000s it is, but this is a record from 1980 and as many mentioned already his career started in the mid-50's some of his earliest unrecorded vocal work both as a vocalist and as a support/backup singer was around 1955 with groups like The Vegas Kings, The Rumblers, The Red Caps and his first recordings as singer / frontman are from 1957 onwards, by the time he started working with Black Sabbath he had already founded and played with Ronnie and The Rumblers, The Redcaps, Dio and The Redcaps, Ronnie Dio and The Prophets/Dio and The Prophets as bassist/singer and with The Prophets, The Electric Elves, The Elves, Electric Elf, Elf & Rainbow as the frontman and lead singer. He had already quite a resume before being part of Black Sabbath and was one of the forefathers of Hard Rock and Metal, it was really the obvious choice for Black Sabbath to team up with him since the admired each other's work. There's in fact a few Black Sabbath covers by Elf of the early 70's from live shows. Just imagine that, of looking up to a band and years down the line ending up playing with them! How awesome is that!?
This album is one of the best produced/mixed metal albums of all time. If you listen to it 4 times and focus on a different instrument (guitars/bass/drums/vocals) each time, it is unbelievable how clear everything sounds.
@@locusmortis My only bitch about Powerslave is how tinny the guitars sound. But yeah, this was a masterwork for him, mostly because it's stripped, no frills, you can hear every note everyone plays. A little doubling on Dio's voice in impactful moments, some vocal harmony, but it sounds like a band, not four people contributing a hundred tracks to put together a pastiche.
The nice thing about the production is also how no-nonsense it is. Maybe some double-tracking for the guitars, some additional layers for the vocals, but otherwise it's a pretty dry record where you can hear everything that's going on. No sound crowds out another, it's all pretty well represented.
nah....... the live version sounds so much better!!! the chorus is totally lame here and the timing of the melody is just odd and almost feeling wrong!! and the rythm is too fast on the album thererfore it lags that heaviness this song gets later on in the live performances in the 90s and 2000s!!!
It actually brings a smile to my face that someone of your age truly appreciated "Dio" He is a powerhouse. I met him years ago at a record release part with Iron Maiden. So much vocal power in such a small man...
Wish Dio was still around to hear all your beautiful compliments on him! Best of all time!!! He definitely was one of a kind and I agree with everything you say about him. Dio was the man...
Noone I've heard to date has broken down Dio's voice and style better than Elizabeth, exploring every nuance and subtlety to such great extent. I'm very impressed. As a lifelong Dio fan I didn't think there was much else to learn about him and never even considered understanding the technical aspects of his voice and style so this was a great discovery for me. Thank you so so much for teaching me things about Ronnie James Dio that I didn't know before. He will always be my favorite musician in the whole world while his music has had such a profound impact on my life. Thank you Elizabeth!
This album is a stone cold masterpiece. Literally every single note of this album from all the players is utter perfection. You could pick any song off this album to analyse his voice and it's a masterclass. The intro to this song gives me folk horror movie vibes. Makes me think of things like The Wickerman and Blood on Satan's Claw. I'm begging you to do Lonely Is The Word off this album. It's heartbreakingly beautiful and as the title suggest, so very lonely.
Very well said. The solo in Lonely is the Word is enough to make a person want to cry. The only Iommi solo that talks to me as much, is the solo on Too Late, from Dehumanizer. That one literally pleads for mercy and tells a story as it goes...
Ronnie James Dio was one of those rock singers who could actually sing. He was smooth as silk with his phrasing and vibrato. Then he could rock the roof off the house with such power. He truly was one of the greatest rock singers of all time! 👍💖🎸😎
The entire Heaven & Hell album is stunning. Another great song on it is ‘Die Young’. It’s a bit faster, but it also has a really soft middle section. And Dio’s voice is as always incredible in that song (especially the studio version)!
It's interesting how you say this was early in his career, but his music career started in 1958. He had been in many bands before Sabbath. He was 38 when this was recorded.
Great point. A lot of folks don’t realize how long he’d been around by this point. I’d love to see an analysis of “An Angel is Missing” from Ronnie’s Do-Wop days.
I think due to folks knowing more about Ozzy they think they were both contemporaries. They sort of were but Dio is close I'm age to most of the Beatles. He was in music around 20 years when he signed only Sabbath. Please try Black Sabbath featuring dio doing sign of the Southern Cross. I also like his performance with Sabbath on the dehumanizer album. I is good on that one. Lots of underrated gems.
Wow, Elizabeth is getting close to a million subs. She is the most interesting, and maybe detailed, reactor on youtube so the success is deserved. And has managed to keep the wonder, even after several years of doing this weekly. I've certainly learned a lot about how good singers do what they do to make a song into a performance.
My friends and I completely freaked out on Dio/Sabbath back in the 80s. To see Elizabeth appreciate it today is awesome. She's says "it's so heavy"... yes it is... \m/
Yep. Love Ozzy Era Sabbath BUT "Heaven And Hell" and "Mob Rules" are GREAT Albums imho..."Country Girl" remains one of my ALL TIME FAVE Black Sabbath Songs over their ENTIRE Catalogue. RIP RJD 🤘
My dad passed away two days ago and this was the album he bought when I was a kid that got me into heavy metal and made Dio and Black Sabbath my favorite singer and band. Watching this video brings me back to being a kid and hearing this album for the first time with my dad.
@Bran - I’m very sorry for your loss. The music will help keep your dad’s memory alive. I used to listen to Rainbow with Dio with my mom. Her favorite was Rainbow Eyes, but she liked the heavy Dio stuff, too. She passed away a couple of months before Ronnie. When I play Rainbow Eyes, I feel her presence next to me and it’s a huge comfort. I hope the music does the same for you. I wish you peace, my friend.
I lost my father on the 27th of April this year. I hear some songs in a new light, thinking of him now. I think you'll experience the same, more and more. Be well mate.
@@joaov_ds- My condolences on the loss of your father. Losing a parent is always more difficult than we expect it to be. I hope the music gives you comfort in the days to come, as it has for me. ✌🏼
"Of course he could sustain that note if he wanted to. He's Dio." Fun fact: A sustained note from Dio is the only thing that has ever been shown to be able to defeat Chuck Norris.
Elizabeth, first want to say I've been listening to you for approximately 6mo. I want to say that I actually have learned a lot from you and has helped me sing a little bit better. This is a fantastic song and Dio is a fantastic addition to Sabbath!! His voice is one of a kind, and nobody will ever be him or even come close to singing like him. He's one of our singing GODS and the best. Thank you for everything you do on here, and may you have a really long career on here!!!
I love when you do your Ronnie James Dio reactions. You become like a little girl in a sweet shop. So excited. I love that you can feel this passionate about how great his voice was. I was the same when I first heard him when I was 12. I wish I could have that first time experience again because it was just utterly magical.
I grew up with Dio, the best six albums in a row ever. Rainbow Rising, Long Live Rock'n'Roll, Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Holy Diver and The Last In Line. Incredible body is work and all still on my playlist 40 years later.
The ‘theramin’ effect during the last quiet section in the song was simply a ‘sawtooth’ synthesiser sound employed by Geoff Nicholls. Incidentally, Geoff’s keyboard parts are one of the rarely mentioned magic ingredients to Dio era Sabbath performances. They glued together the guitar and bass parts, and complemented Dio’s expressive vocal lines perfectly. This contrasted very noticeably on following Dio band albums where the keyboard inclusions, in my view, were much more pedestrian.
Ok, I heard that extra little bit of dirt on it and knew it wasn’t a pure theremin-but I wasn’t sure if they were just using a synth to emulate that sound or if they just ran a theremin through a Big Muff. I kinda wanna hear a theremin played through a Big Muff, because that’d probably sound pretty sweet.
I saw B.S. live supporting this album. I don't remember if they did this song though. [Edit] I looked up their set list from back then and it looks like they played it. I think I saw the Mob Rules tour since Vinnie was on drums.
It funny, it almost sounds like 3 different singers. Between the beginning verse, and the second and third part... So talented. So many sounds to his voice...
I so enjoyed watching her enjoy Dio singing. Her hand over her chest, eyes closed….ecstasy! I’ll never forget the year I discovered this album. It changed my life….it became an important record in my life. To this day. I never tire of it.
"Children of the Sea" is perhaps the most distinctive song from the Black Sabbath album Heaven and Hell. While the writing credits on the album are given to the entire crew of Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler, the rest of the group already had the tune while Dio, brought in to replace Ozzy Osbourne, wrote the lyrics. Dio tells how this song became his welcome to the band: "I met them at the house that they were using to rehearse in and purely went to say hello and get to know them. I had no thoughts whatsoever of being in the band. As far as I knew, Ozzy was still in the band. During the conversation, Tony asked me if I'd like to see the studio they were doing their things in. He, Geezer and Bill picked up their instruments and started to play [what became] 'Children of the Sea' and I liked it very much. Tony asked me if I could do anything with it. I said, 'Give me a few minutes, I think I can knock something out.' We pretty well wrote the song that quickly."
"...We pretty well wrote the song that quickly." - Yeah, the Picasso thing: "No. It took me 40 years to draw this in five minutes." strikes back again. :D That's why in the video she kept analyzing even the last few seconds of the song by pausing & going back again and again.
The “sky” in the intro is how I learned to switch from head to chest voice and combine them into something powerful. I spent hours teaching myself and mastering that! This is one of the best examples of why I describe Ronnie’s voice as a volcano erupting beneath a sea of honey.
This is a great song. Even though it gets far less fanfare I still think the "Mob Rules" album is better than this one... "Sign of the Southern Cross" and "Falling off the Edge of the World" are masterpieces.
I'd really like to hear Elizabeths take on "Sign" because for most of the song, there's literally nothing but drums, a bit of Geoff Nichols on keys and Ronnie. It's not just a fantastic display of RJD, but of the grasp these guys had of song dynamics: with just drums, light keys and voice, when Tony and Geezer come in for the chorus, the contrast makes that crushing riff even heavier sounding. And Tony, for all his (in)famous ego clashes with Ronnie, cared more about the songs than about his own parts in them. That song actually became *heavier* because of him playing less in it, and he knew that and went for it.
Since you are such a Fan of Dios Storytelling, I HIGHLY reccomend the Song "Bible Black" by the Band Heaven & Hell (yes, named after Song/Album). They where Dios last Project, and in this one he tells an incredible Story. His abillity to encapture the listener with his diction, his emphasis and subtle use of distortion is, imho, almost unparalled, even for his standards. That paired with incredible musicians around him makes this one of my absolute Highlights of Dios entire career. The Guitar sings alongside him, emphasising storypoints, creating tension, and its just incredible. you will absolutely Nerd out on that one, I guarantee it.
The Producer here - Martin Birch - worked on Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules (the 1st two Dio-Sabbath albums), and also produced all three Rainbow albums that Dio sang on; Whitesnake, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple and 10 Iron Maiden albums. He's a big part of the sound here
You shoul react to his live performance of mistreated in rainbow (1977). It's his best live performance in my opinion. Also I don't think we're opposed to you becoming a Dio channel lol.
Ronnie James Dio's professional recording and performing career began in around 1970 when the band "Elf" released their first studio record!! The way sang all of the songs recorded by Elf showed his superior singing abilities back at the start of the 1970's!!!!
One other song that reflected Dio's advanced vocal ability was one titled "Love Is All" which was a song written and recorded with Roger Glover's solo band. He's been the bass guitarist for Deep Purple since the late 1960's!!! It was recorded for Glover's solo record project in the early 70's also!! In the year 2000 Ronnie sang this same song live with Deep Purple with a full orchestra on many of those 2000-2001 tour dates across the world!!
Watching you fall in love with the words and his voice is epic! The look on your face as he started to sing is the same amongst all of us that loved him and his music. Thank you so much and long live Ronnie James Dio!❤️
I think that the live version of Mistreated from Munich is the single greatest Dio live performance. Every week I hope that Elizabeth will react to it. I'm beginning to think that it's not going to happen.
Rock In Peace, Ronnie James Dio. We will always have the music. He will always be the Man on the Silver Mountain. I've not heard a better rock singer in recent times since his passing 12 years ago. Thank you Elizabeth for reviewing this song!
The studio version! Great, great choice. BethRoars a couple of years back did a live version from one of his first solo shows which was slower and even heavier, but the studio version is a damn fine choice!
To limit him and say he had the “metal” voice is an understatement. Everything he sang was so limitless. Even back in his ELF days. Purely a fantastic vocal experience.
I know its a Long Shot, but my favorite DIO Track is "Caught in the Middle" from the Holy Diver Album. Very Heart-Felt Message and just cool tune to boot.
The one and only time I saw Dio was with Heaven & Hell on the Metal Masters tour. When he sang "Children of the Sea" I got goosebumps. This diminutive man fighting cancer sang like a giant. My fav concert moment of all time.
The story I read somewhere is that Tony Iommi had the riffs, but not the full song. He went to a party without Geezer one night, met Ronnie and they ended up jamming back at Tony’s. Dio played the bass on the initial demo, apparently (he played bass and sang in early versions of Elf)
@@tomfabozzi5353 I heard a similar story about a random encounter with Tony Iommi. But I didn't know about the demo part. I was surprised to see that Dio didn't even start out as a lead vocalist and was just a bassist for the DooWop/Rock 'n' Roll band he was in.
I was lucky to see Dio with Black Sabbath as Heaven and Hell when he was sick with cancer and he was the same powerful singer from nearly 30 years earlier. Not many vocalist that I know can keep pulling that off.
Not only are you outstanding at breaking down Dio's voice but you seem like a wonderful person as well, not to bring up that people would have to be blind not to admit that you are simply gorgeous. Keep it up !
I saw Heaven and Hell five times. Dio was a kind wonderful man who made you feel special at his concerts. He truly loved his fans and really relayed that feeling during his performances.
I know Dehumanizer isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but outside the myriad of classics on Heaven and Hell, I reckon “Too Late” is one of his best performances with the band. The next song on the album, “I”, is also right up there. His voice was such a finely-crafted weapon, and the control he had over it was unbelievable. In one moment he could use it as a cudgel to beat you over the head with, and often literally in the next breath it would be a scalpel used for the most delicate surgery. Quite astounding.
Absofuckinglutley!! The DEHUMANIZER album is so so good! Too Late is a track that definitely showcases the dynamics of Dio's voice as well as Iommi's mastery of guitar. Beautifully dark in it's tone, that album is a masterpiece, imo. 🤘
People like to throw around the phrase "underated," but it really applies to Dehumanizer album. Sabbath fans barely noticed, Dio fans barely noticed, so much was happening in the rock world at that time, that the work was tragically overshadowed. I had the cassette when it came out, liked it, but got lost in grunge, and heavier metal. I rediscovered the album later, to much more appreciation, (songs like "TV Crimes" seem a little dated, and aren't prime Sabbath, but eh) as it really had a harder edge than most Sabbath. Less fuzz tone, more crunch for Iommi. Cheers
Yeah this is one of the best sounding albums black sabbath ever made. That's due to producer Martin Birch. He had previously done the rainbow rising album with Dio which you've heard Stargazer from. Not too long after this he would become semi retired only working with Iron Maiden exclusively until he fully retired in 1992. Sadly he passed away recently but every album he was attached to had fantastic production.
Yes Martin Birch is major part of this. Let's just say, many less deserving individuals made a lot of cash out of the classic albums he created over the years, He is now acknowledged by most of the bands themselves. He was a "musician" in the studio, and as you say he's definitely unsung. His full recognition will come eventually, it's a pity he died now and wont see it.
You MUST react to "Rainbow - Mistreated live in Munich 1977". This is Dio's masterpiece performance, showing the full range and techniques of what he was really able to do. Expect the unexpected :) There's no one or other version, not even the original from Black Sabbath, that can be near as great as this one is! I can hardly wait for your reaction to this!
I would recommend the later Dio song "As Long As It's Not About Love". Ronnie nailed the melody and emotion with that sing. He truly was a master throughout his entire career.
I saw Heaven and Hell at Cobo Hall in 2007, he sang all this material like it was 1982 that night, freaked me out. I know all these songs by heart and can sing them all, it was absolute magic. I thought he was a robot at times it was so good. RIP Ronnie. Love ya brother.
Shortly before Dio ascended, he reunited with the guys from Black Sabbath and made an album and toured under the name "Heaven and Hell" - they did a whole album of new material and toured playing all the old Dio-era Sabbath songs again. Dio was in his mid 60s and still had the magic.
This song is a master piece. So beautiful, so powerful, so amazing. The whole package is wonderful. Listening to DIO singing is like touching the heavens wihtout need to fly.
I was an early Dio fan back in the early 70s. I worked very hard to introduce as many folks to his fabulousness as possible. Even after all these years this song still gives me chills. Perhaps the next song could be Lady of the Lake. Keep up the great work!
Let's not forget that Dio was born in 1942. In 1980 when this song was released he was 38. He was not that young. Always appreciate your reactions to Dio : ) hope one day you will come to do Rainbow - Mistreated - Live in Munich - 1977. Maybe one of the best musical performances in the history of mankind, and Dio absolutely killing it
@@MLawrence2008 well I don't agree, I find Dio's vocal choices slightly more hazardous on the live in Japan version. But it's just a matter of tastes and perceptions. I mean to me he reached perfection on the Munich show
This was a hard album for a lot of us die hard Sabbath fans back in the day. Technical ecstasy then this. It was a weird time for Sabbath then, in 1981 they released Mob Rules (still with Dio) and the world was great again.
Thank you so much for sharing your passion in Ronnie James DIO’s artistry!! He was/is such a gift to the music world! There’s a new documentary coming out soon about his life. (Watch for it) Ronnie was a poet, many times when he created vocal verses, he would stretch and shape different words so they would rhyme with following words. It’s not just him singing words strangely. He’s sculpting them to continue the flow and poetry. Miss him every day!!!
Met RJD and his band at a Truck stop in Bordentown NJ while getting stuck on the night shift in the early 2000’s. He came in around 3:am and I went total fanboy. He and his band were the coolest, nicest guys I ever met. Ronnie was a great human being who made everyone feel important. I didn’t even charge him for the dental floss. Love that guy!
I got 2 tickets from a promoter to a concert, at Radio City Music Hall. Got in early, we were the first through the doors. The stage was almost ready. A lady came out to see the stage. We waved, she waved back. She walked down to the floor edge corner of the stage walking toward us. I got chills and goose bumps all over. She asked, "would you two like to go back stage and meet my husband Ronnie and the guys before the show?".. "yes". Ronnie was a beautiful human being, the rest of the guys were too, Geeze was quiet but humble, Toni was engaging and kind, gave us each a guitar pick, Vinnie was a wild man, funny, gave us each an autographed drum stick. It was amazing. Wendy walked us back to the stage edge, going to our seats. And this huge 6'8" tall monster big dude gave us each a shirt, I still have the shirt, drum stick, and guitar pick.
In a world where there’s ALWAYS someone who’s more than happy to sh#@ on someone in the spotlight, I’ve never heard anything but what an absolutely wonderful person he’s always been. Says quite a bit about the man. 🫡🤘🏻
I always loved sabbath with ozzy…. But this album blew me away turned me on to dio as a teen I played this record for the last 43 years I’m glad to know there’s more people that hear what I have heard in this album I still have it and listen ed to it in just about every way I could .I picked it apart since it came out also.
I love watching your Dio analysis videos. They bring me back to when I first discovered him. At the same time I feel sorry that you never got to see him live. Also, I met him 4 times. What a warm, kind gentleman he was. He would have been happy to speak with you, I'm sure! 🤘
I met him backstage after my best bud and I climbed under the stage when they were tearing it down. We waited hours to meet him but it was worth it-- he was so gracious humble and a gentleman ...so....agree! And so much dark charisma!
@@paulaamero ha! The first time I met him was after a show where I jumped on the stage! I can't believe the didn't boot me out. We waited outside after the show and everyone was so cool.
I decided to binge watch Elizabeth today and saw this for starters and clapped like a loon until I realized that this was a premiere and I had to wait 😭. LOL I can't even say this is my favorite song on Heaven And Hell because the whole album is my favorite of Black Sabbath's, besides Master Of Reality. But it is such an incredible song, the music and definitely the lyrics. Dio was an incredible song writer as he was singer. When he shouts "Lookout!" you better lookout. Don't even hesitate, lookout, just do it because the Godfather of Metal said so. 🤘😎🤘
I remember when this album came out, I had it on cassette in my car, and would drive around the school playing it loud, I was so bummed that Ozzy got kicked out of sabbath, but dang, Dio worked out awesomely with the boys. Elizabeth, you're absolutely awesome too.
You are spot on !! I’m 55 years old and been listening Dio and Iron Maiden and all the rest my whole life!! Listen to an old Aerosmith song called dream on done by Dio and guitar legend Yngvie Malmsteen you will go nuts!! Hats off to you for loving what our parents hated in the 80’s
My spanish is crappy. But it get it. Yes: Martin "the wasp" Birch is as legend! like all the fancy bands had the sleeve designs for their albums made by "Hypgnosis".
@@peterdoe2617 it's actually portuguese. Very close to spanish ineed, but another language nonetheless. Never say such thing in Brazil or Portugal, cause you might get some trouble, dude, XD
Thank you so much for doing this analysis. "Children of the Sea" came out when I was 16, and I vividly remember learning to play it on my guitar, and spending hours by myself gorging on this tune. Dio's beautiful voice was a major inspiration which convinced me to learn how to sing. While I do not possess Dio's skill, I have taken years of voice lessons, played and sung in a local rock band, and currently sing in a choir and a chorus. Gone but not forgotten - thank you Ronnie n/
So happy you appreciate Ronnie's amazingness -- but understand that this is not "young Dio" as you keep saying, this is Peak Dio -- and Peak Dio lasts from 1975-1990, in-of-itself an amazing stretch for such a powerful vocalist. Young Dio was 1958-1974, so we are 20 years in at this point in Children of the Sea. But again -- so happy you appreciate him, he's the Dark Opera G.O.A.T.
I love how this talented young woman loves the music from my teenage years. I took for granted how talented the musicians of my youth were (Dio, Van Halen, Ozzie, Rob Halford, etc.)
Thank you so much for doing a studio version of this song! You actually miss a great deal of what many of these singers can do if you skip the studio version, and especially if you do just live video versions of the songs. Ozzy and Dio are both known for their interaction with the audience when they play live, most times to the detriment of doing something like analyzing the vocals. The recording and production is something you completely miss when you do live video versions of songs, and in most cases the recording and production is pretty serious business to why the band is successful, and the vocalist esteemed, and that has nothing to do with studio trickery or hiding faults, it has to do with their control over "this is how we want to sound, this is how I want to sing."
@@menfaaanda imo his best work was on master of reality. You could really hear the bass and it was almost a second guitar with the C# tuning on Tony's SG.
you love DIO as well as I check outa song called : Country Girl from an album called MOB RULES, when he was with Black Sabbath, I haven't seen a live version but the studio version is really awesome, much vocal treats!!!!
Wore the grooves off this album when I was a kid. My sister took me to see this concert when I was 15. If I was stuck on a deserted island and could only have one album to listen to, this would be that album.
Sometimes. What I didn't say in that comment was she got mad at me and thought she heard me say something I didn't say. She poured her coke in my lap and embarrassed me in front of a girl I had a crush on. I couldn't get up til the lights went out. But she did take me to every good concert from the age of 12 til I was able to drive myself to them, so yes overall cool sister. That was the second time she took me to see Sabbath. The first time was Sabbath/Van Halen.
@@markwilliams6394 - I grew up with two sisters, so I know exactly what you’re talking about! Overall, I think she must’ve been pretty cool. She could’ve left you home or worse - she could’ve been into Barry Manilow and Bread, like my older sister! I made her cry one time when she was working on a term paper and I was playing the first Van Halen album at jumbo jet level. We laugh about it now. My younger sister wound up a serious metalhead after the older one moved out. I took her to see Dio, Scorps, Maiden and Priest, among many others. She still thanks me all the time for saving her from easy listening hell. Good times! 🤘🏼
Yes, she was pretty cool and still is. I have her and an adopted brother. I took him to Judas Priest (2×), Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy (2×) once with John Sykes, BLS, and Paul DiAnno.
Dio is without peer. Black Sabbath is a genius band, kept evolving it’s sound W different singers through different eras. Whenever you get a chance please react to Born Again by Black Sabbath W Ian Gillan and also Dying for love W Tony Martin by the same band. Thank you.
YEEEEEEAAAHHHH she did it! Thanks dear! Beautiful tune! Immortal, RJD always in our hearts! I like lizzy's face when she hears Ronnie, she is really amazed. We made her love Ronnie, and that's beautiful! Thank you for this amazing reaction and analysis 👏
I humbly suggest Rainbow's version of "mistreated" live in Munich to see an incredible range from Ronnie. Such a great reaction, the entire album Heaven and Hell was so good. I just re-watched this video and wanted to correct you in one regard: this was after Rainbow (Ronnie was in Rainbow from 1975-1979 and then he went into Black Sabbath so he was older on these recordings than those with Rainbow). I would also add that you should check out "Over and Over" from Sabbath's Mob Rules album, you can feel the pain in Ronnies voice on that recording. I could watch your analysis' over and over again, thank you.
I was lucky to see Dio several times throughout his career including a classic Black Sabbath set when I was just 14. Every show he did, there always were slight differences in his vocal presentation, not just "like the record"9 You really felt he was performing, adding those special bits and extending/sliding notes and even varying his line delivery. As he aged, his voice stayed true and while he lost a bit of power, he could still drive a melody and make you bang and get your horns out. He was always in time and any pitch variations seemed his decision to serve the song, especially during his live shows. Always a true musician with his voice. R.I.P. Ronnie, you are always in our hearts and your music lives on. Good job as always!
I would love to see you do a breakdown of a song Dio did with Kerry Livgren of Kansas called “The Mask of the Great Deceiver.” Duo’s voice on that is incredibly expressive. Some of his best work, in my opinion. He had one other song on that same album called “To Live For the King,” in which Kerry Livgren stated the entire outro was ad-libbed by Dio, and which fit perfectly. By the way, love your channel and watch it on a regular basis. I appreciate how you sometimes “geek out” on some of this stuff. Makes it fresh and fun. Thanks for the content and I helping even old guys like me discovering new music and artists, as well as rediscovering some old friends.
What brings me here is watching Ronnie's documentary. dreams never die, last night o the best documentary of a musician I ever seen Long Live Ronnie 🤘🏻🤩 definitely love your analytical of musicians so knowledgeable ✌🏻

Be sure to listen to Dio in Rainbow, before joining Black Sabbath, as well!
The best Metal voice of all time. RIP Dio
YES
Yeah noone will ever come close to that..
Can't agree, but RIP all the same.
Agree 100 % RIP Ronnie 🕊🙏🪦
I agree..he was so bad ass
Let’s not forget the amazing bass being laid down by Geezer, perfection ❤ Dio+Sabbath= Amazing 🤘
In my opinion, when Sabbath TRULY became metal. Rainbow was putting out more metal years before than Sabbath...why? Ronnie James Dio.
geezer butler is a legend
Right? My god it just dominates the song and is perfect!!!
This album is one of the best produced/mixed metal albums of all time. If you listen to it 4 times and focus on a different instrument (guitars/bass/drums/vocals) each time, it is unbelievable how clear everything sounds.
It's a Martin Birch produced record, I think this and Powerslave are the two most outstandingly clear metal albums of all time.
RUSH has the same...multiple listens improve the listeners ability to hear the whole...masters
nah....... the live version sounds so much better!!! the chorus is totally lame here and the timing of the melody is just odd and almost feeling wrong!! and the rythm is too fast on the album thererfore it lags that heaviness this song gets later on in the live performances in the 90s and 2000s!!!
He may not be alive, but I'm sure looking down and smiling and hearing everything she's saying
@@richardmichael7631 You mean looking _up_ . 🔥🤘🔥
Ronnie James Dio was 37 when he recorded the vocals. Truly a legend. Gone but not forgotten
I think so as well.
Having an opera singer dive into our music is the best way, as they are the best equipped to evaluate vocals of any stripe.🤘🏻
I think it's the best album ever
yes it is !
yep - to me as well!
I completely agree, the best album ever. Every song is great.
I would have recommended Die Young too.
Absolutely. Great song. Honestly, at least six of the eight songs on this album are great.
@@richardsmalls7721 I'm not even into that old doo wop Rock n roll but his stuff was really good.
Se non ci fossi tu, se non mi amassi più
Ci pensi che tristezza senza te
I think due to folks knowing more about Ozzy they think they were both contemporaries. They sort of were but Dio is close I'm age to most of the Beatles. He was in music around 20 years when he signed only Sabbath.
Please try Black Sabbath featuring dio doing sign of the Southern Cross. I also like his performance with Sabbath on the dehumanizer album. I is good on that one. Lots of underrated gems.
I wasn't sure how old he was but I was guessing late 30s yeah.
“The sound overall is soooooo ! heavy!” This woman has entered the realm of extreme coolness.
Every rock and metal fan knows that Dio was one of the best ever and will forever be missed !!
I swear to you, you will enjoy "Sign of the Southern Cross" as much as you enjoyed "Children of the Sea".
Fuck, that is a solid tune too!
God yes
These two are my favorite Black Sabbath songs, maybe favorites of anyone. Definitely up there.
Yes... but from 2007 Radio City Music Hall
@@raisun8624 i hope that she does the studio version. His voice in the beginning is truly special.
Wow, Elizabeth is getting close to a million subs. She is the most interesting, and maybe detailed, reactor on youtube so the success is deserved. And has managed to keep the wonder, even after several years of doing this weekly. I've certainly learned a lot about how good singers do what they do to make a song into a performance.
her analysis is so descriptive even if you aren't a musician.
U forgot beautiful
@@crusheverything4449 Thank you so much. Your mom had great taste, I love Rainbow Eyes as well, probably my favorite ballad.

You MUST analyze Sign of the Southern Cross or Falling off the Edge of the World from Mob Rules. You will be in tears…. In a good way 🙂
Or? Why not and?
Definetly!
Southern Cross definitely
And Mistreated 😉
If you look Heavy Metal up in the dictionary, “Falling Off The Edge Of The World” would be the song that defines it! My #1 from the SABBATH.
"Of course he could sustain that note if he wanted to. He's Dio."
Fun fact: A sustained note from Dio is the only thing that has ever been shown to be able to defeat Chuck Norris.
When Dio says NO, chuck says, ok
Reality challenges Chuck.
👍😂🤘
🤔
Could actually be true!
Chuck Norris AND Leroy Jenkins. FIFY. :)
That's because both Dio and Chuck Norris are primordial beings.
@@krisyoungsteadt9139 ain’t that the truth!
The 80’s were kinda like what they say about Woodstock,
“If you remember it, you weren’t there”.😅
The man was born to sing. And he gave his life to just that. Long Live Dio 🤘
I literally played this tonight (acoustic) with my daughter singing at a local pub. My favorite Sabbath album and favorite Dio song.
@Team Recon - I loved reading your post! I have an adult daughter who loves metal, too. My best to both of you.
"Children of the Sea" is perhaps the most distinctive song from the Black Sabbath album Heaven and Hell. While the writing credits on the album are given to the entire crew of
Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler, the rest of the group already had the tune while Dio, brought in to replace Ozzy Osbourne, wrote the lyrics.
Who are you ???
Well "Children of the Sea" was the first song wrote when Dio joined the band....it's not Ozzy song.
@@MrKlacken I'm Metal Mark, of course 😆.
"...We pretty well wrote the song that quickly." - Yeah, the Picasso thing: "No. It took me 40 years to draw this in five minutes." strikes back again. :D That's why in the video she kept analyzing even the last few seconds of the song by pausing & going back again and again.
Serendipity for sure!
The “sky” in the intro is how I learned to switch from head to chest voice and combine them into something powerful. I spent hours teaching myself and mastering that! This is one of the best examples of why I describe Ronnie’s voice as a volcano erupting beneath a sea of honey.
You’re so right, he’s very specific on where he injects emotion. And what range of emotions he has in his palette!
This is a great song.
Even though it gets far less fanfare I still think the "Mob Rules" album is better than this one... "Sign of the Southern Cross" and "Falling off the Edge of the World" are masterpieces.
I agree with you on that one.
Agree!
Absolutely.
Falling of the edge off the world is iconic Sabbath
Sign of the southern cross or falling off the edge of the world needs to be next
agreed! If you do any other DIO era Sabbath, please do the studio version of "Sign of the Southern Cross."
Oh yes please, either of these fantastic songs.
Defenetly XD
Southern cross is so awesome the bass guitar on a wah pedal is genius
Seems like desperate measures but sometimes it's got to be done
"Breaking Into Heaven" on that album shows off his dynamics as well. Overall a brilliant metal album by musicians all in their 60s.
Great suggestion. Sad song though, I think he wrote it about himself. At least the first part.
2009 Wacken Concert version is great. 60 year olds doing better than bands half their ages.
I agree for his last Album just before his death it’s amazing how good his voice still sounds!
I've been trying to get someone to take Heaven and Hell more seriously! There should be live footage too.
This is my favourite song and it is wonderful to see the pure joy as you engage with this masterpiece.
He's a big part of the sound here
As amazing as Dio is on this song, Tony Iommi's acoustic guitar intro has been seared into my mind for decades.
You must check out the studio version of Sign of the Southern Cross. His voice at the beginning is astounding and unbelievible
🤘
omg yes. also "country girl", entire holy diver album and the next.. just.. MORE DIO!!
More Dio please. I can't believe you haven't reviewed Mistreated, the 1977 live performance yet. It's amazing

Rock In Peace, Ronnie James Dio. We will always have the music. He will always be the Man on the Silver Mountain.

Thank you Elizabeth for reviewing this song!
The studio version! Great, great choice. BethRoars a couple of years back did a live version from one of his first solo shows which was slower and even heavier, but the studio version is a damn fine choice!
BethRoars is another of my favorite reaction pages. She doesn't analyze as deeply as E does, but she really gets into the music. She's fun to watch.
That was in 1983. Excellent version.
Such a great album. Desert island material, for sure. And this song one of the strongest.
You are all over it! Caught In the Middle from HOLY DIVER is one of RJD's best vocal performances....bar none!!
YES! That songs is amazing
Yes indeed! Catchy yet feel-y.
How do you choose from that many? I like "Shame on the night" that much also.
The one and only time I saw Dio was with Heaven & Hell on the Metal Masters tour. When he sang "Children of the Sea" I got goosebumps. This diminutive man fighting cancer sang like a giant. My fav concert moment of all time.
Tony Iommi had this song, and they apparently worked on it with Ozzy, before he was out of the band. Ronnie came in, and it's a masterpiece.
The story I read somewhere is that Tony Iommi had the riffs, but not the full song. He went to a party without Geezer one night, met Ronnie and they ended up jamming back at Tony’s. Dio played the bass on the initial demo, apparently (he played bass and sang in early versions of Elf)
Tony Iommi played with soo much fealing. Definitely one of the top albums ever.
Dehumanizer is defiantly my cup, I always loved his evil performances in computer God
Cheers
I by itself is worth getting the album for.
Sooo true! One of my favorites of all the Sabbath catalog.
Rainbow - Mistreated - Live in Munich 1977. You will love it ❤️
Agree, all the songs are fantastic.
On and on and on ….. Dio will never be forgotten!
This entire album is a MASTERPIECE 🤘
Yeah this is one of the best sounding albums black sabbath ever made. That's due to producer Martin Birch. He had previously done the rainbow rising album with Dio which you've heard Stargazer from.
Not too long after this he would become semi retired only working with Iron Maiden exclusively until he fully retired in 1992. Sadly he passed away recently but every album he was attached to had fantastic production.
Birch was the unsung hero of many a great album.
Two Blue Oyster Cult albums and Sabbath. Then on to Maiden. He was a master of his craft. The Purple,Rainbow and Whitesnake before that.
Ever since, maiden's production sucks
Yes Martin Birch is major part of this. Let's just say, many less deserving individuals made a lot of cash out of the classic albums he created over the years, He is now acknowledged by most of the bands themselves. He was a "musician" in the studio, and as you say he's definitely unsung. His full recognition will come eventually, it's a pity he died now and wont see it.
You MUST react to "Rainbow - Mistreated live in Munich 1977".
This is Dio's masterpiece performance, showing the full range and techniques of what he was really able to do. Expect the unexpected :)
There's no one or other version, not even the original from Black Sabbath, that can be near as great as this one is! I can hardly wait for your reaction to this!
I agree
I agree too ;-)
I agree as well, followed by "Catch the Rainbow" from the same concert.
I have also suggested that one! Probably top 5 live songs for me!
Me too!
Rainbow - Mistreated (Live in Munich 1977), it is the best rock performance EVER by RJD. It will literally blow your mind.
Shortly before Dio ascended, he reunited with the guys from Black Sabbath and made an album and toured under the name "Heaven and Hell" - they did a whole album of new material and toured playing all the old Dio-era Sabbath songs again. Dio was in his mid 60s and still had the magic.
Remember Dehumanizer.

Thank you so much for sharing your passion in Ronnie James DIO’s artistry!! He was/is such a gift to the music world! There’s a new documentary coming out soon about his life. (Watch for it)
Ronnie was a poet, many times when he created vocal verses, he would stretch and shape different words so they would rhyme with following words.

Don't even hesitate, lookout, just do it because the Godfather of Metal said so. 🤘😎🤘
I was f*ckin pissed when I saw that it was a trailer. A TRAILER?!?! FOR ANOTHER RJD SONG?! HOW! DARE! YOU!
Unquestionably, the best vocals and the band are fantastic.
Nunca, nunca esquecer o grande trabalho de Martin Birch na produção deste álbum, que abrilhanta, por demais, a atuação da banda. Clássico atemporal.
@@MrMmetal Verdade!
Gone but not forgotten - thank you Ronnie

This whole album is so Epic. It easily makes my top 10 albums of all time
So happy you appreciate Ronnie's amazingness -- but understand that this is not "young Dio" as you keep saying, this is Peak Dio -- and Peak Dio lasts from 1975-1990, in-of-itself an amazing stretch for such a powerful vocalist. Young Dio was 1958-1974, so we are 20 years in at this point in Children of the Sea. But again -- so happy you appreciate him, he's the Dark Opera G.O.A.T.
Incredible voice and presence
Totally agree! I'm thrilled to see her react to a studio version of a song. It often offers the best-performed vocal take coupled with the best audio.
As great as Dio is, the tone and feel of Tony Iommi's guitar really just makes the song. His timing is also unreal on this song.
Totally agree, love Iommi’s tone, perfect,
Well, Tony is a riffmaster for sure, one of creators of heavy metal and awesome guitarist in general, he is awesome!
Geezer puts in some amazing work too. My all time favourite bass album.
Sign of the Southern Cross!! Black Sabbath w/ Dio! EPIC!!!
Dio schools half the singers that ever lived in a single word. He was crazy good. Pop had Michael, Rock had Freddie, Metal had Dio.
Comparing Ronnie to Ozzy is like comparing a Ferrari to a broken skateboard.
Holy crap thank you for playing this song and Reacting to it. I don’t think I’ve listened to it in 35 or more years. I forgot how amazing it is.
Your fondness of Dio's voice really reminds me of when I was first discovering him.
Every time you do a Dio video my day is made. It makes me so happy to see him appreciated in such a way.
This song is an absolute masterpiece.
Amazing
Wore the grooves off this album when I was a kid. My sister took me to see this concert when I was 15. If I was stuck on a deserted island and could only have one album to listen to, this would be that album.
@Mark Williams - You have a really cool sister!!
Thank you for this amazing reaction and analysis 👏
such a brilliant song
