One of DRG's designers here. Awesome video as usual. This one was very nice to me. You mention a lot of details that brought many memories of all the discussions that led to those decisions. We landed where we are because we thought it was the best choice, but you never know! So it's great to see they clicked for you. Sometimes we went into so many details during those discussions that I would think "would anyone ever notice this stuff?". Well, apparently some nerd did ;) Having few weapons with a lot of customization was the result of being a small team, but also a design principle. We wanted every choice to matter and be drastically different. Having 10 slightly different assault rifles was an option, but it simply didn't feel right for the game. However, what was initially a pragmatic choice, has turned into a lot of work. Creating so many modifications for each weapon has been a huge challenge. Every upgrade should feel meaningful and different, but it should also not invade the space of another weapon, and yeah, it has to be balanced. The only way to do this was by creating many new systems: fear, temperature, armor, electricity, weakpoints,... Which means that enemies have to be created with all this in mind. So much to keep track off, but still happy we went this route.
Any chance at all to get out-of-class weapons? I've promoted stupidly often and would love for instance using the scouts AR as an engineer, or the engi's shotgun as a gunner or whatever. I understand its not intended as is, but for LATE game players maybe?
@@GundamReviver that is an interesting concept, however I think that might muddle class identity. One of the games strengths is that each of the classes plays completely differently and has unique offerings and combat approaches, and limitations. I just watched all of your videos last night, only to see your community post and subsequent video today. The amount of effort put into these is insane and your narration style is great. 10/10 video for a 10/10 game.
Fantastic example of terrible hit reactions is Spacehulk Deathwing. It's also a four-player coop shooter with some decent looking and sounding guns that all just feel like wet noodles because they did such a terrible job with reactions. Rather than blowing Tyrnids to deep-fried bug nuggets, you tickle them for a little while and then they just turn to dust
Your editing is world class, bud. You're doing DRG and us dwarfs proud with how much time and effort you put into these. As a Gunner, Rock and Stone to ya, brother. Can't wait to see what's next.
I gotta say I love the breach cutter. There was one moment where I was running to the drop pod low on time and turn around after a dead end to find 12 glyphids and a praetorian. 3 quick shots later and they're all dead. Brought me happiness
I'm a month late to seeing this video from live, but I am glad I watched it (and was recommended it) all the same. The editing that you put into this experience was fantastic. The little details with sounds lining up with animations as well as the text boxes that smoothly transition in and out were my favourite parts of the editing. The content was good too! I appreciate all the live examples that were cut to the perfect length. Thanks for creating this video. This was a blast to watch!
This is genuinely one of my favourite vids of yours so far! It's a really great look at how different DRG does gunplay without overwhelming players. Hell, as someone who's had the Overclocks so long he's forgotten what half of them even are, I'm excited to take a look at some of these again! (Especially the Subata, I honestly thought there wasn't a Flame Combo Mod!)
Something to note with the EPC's thin containment field upgrade is that it also does pretty good damage, making it a valuable offensive tool against tightly packed medium-small enemies(grunt swarms/swarmers) while also doing a fair amount to praetorians. It's not *great* at things larger than praetorians, especially compared to other secondary builds that focus on killing big things but it still does a good job.
Scout protip for the M1000: Don't focus-shot if you're planning on hitting a grunt in the face. You'll just waste ammo. A single, normal shot can instakill a grunt if shot in the face. Also, you can focus-shot with 1 ammo in the clip. I recommend only focusing when dealing with Oppressors, Dreadnoughts, Nemeses, Mactera Tri-jaws, Mactera Brundles, Mactera Grabbers, pretty much just anything that's bigger than a Mactera Spawn/Glyphid Slasher/Guard/Grunt. Protip for the Zhukovs: Don't use the Zhukovs. Protip for the Boomstick: Use White Phosphorus shells and super-blowthrough rounds with the Special Powder overclock. You can have an incendiary piercing Force-A-Nature. Protip for the M1000, part 2: Use Hoverclock. If combined with the grappling hook, you can actually fly. This applies even more with the Special Powder overclock for the Boomstick.
My favorite gun so far has to be the M1000. On any other class it would frankly be underwhelming and hard to use effectively, but by giving it to the Scout it rewards good mobility and becomes a satisfying and efficient way of taking out enemies, especially ones with full armor. No better feeling than grappling past an oppressor, dreadnought, or praetorian while it's distracted by your team and nailing it with a bunch of weak point shots.
Engineer's shotgun deels so right, maybe that's just because I love shotguns, but the crunch it has is perfect and turning it either into an armour cracking boomstick or a horde sweeper is real neat.
My favorites are the flamethrower for just decimating swarms, especially when you drill a death tunnel and line the walls with flames, and the flak cannon for tearing apart armor on huge baddies. Both very satisfying but in different ways. Even through the gunners zip lines are pretty slow, i find they are most useful for getting a good angle on big guys, dreadnaughts especially. Just build a web of lines above the area and rain death from above no matter which way they go
My favorite weapon in Deep Rock is the Impact Axe, where every other dwarf gets a new-aged grenade I’ve got an axe that Karl used (and I can pick them back up if I miss)
Favorite gun is probably the Cryo. Love working together with a Gunner who just deletes anything frozen. Favorite overclock is probably ricochet on the Gunner's revolver. It takes down anything on the roof in seconds and has a suprisingly good amount of AoE with the right upgrades. Also, great vid man :)
You did a really good job on this video, the time put in shows a lot. I'm yet to unlock overclocks and I still need to finish a couple assignments but my favourite weapons are the M1000 Classic for the satisfying sounds and insane damage output, Jury Rigged Shotty feels like the super shotgun in DOOM and Is just incredible, the Warthog gives that shotgun umph that fuels my desire for fighting creeps and the PGL is if demoman dropped his grenade launcher for a single shot one that does more and it's insanely fun to use. For gunner, the leadstorm is stupidly fun and it speaks to my Heavy main nature, the Bulldog is also a godlike secondary for it's ability to output damage hard and fast, and finally the CRSPR with sticky flames allows for such a different way of approaching a fight and conserving ammo that it's one of my favourite ways to kill bugs, and since I havent unlocked the EPC yet, I love the versatility of the Subata and just the reliability of it. So yeah, my favourite weapons so far
16:03 Fun fact, that fun, spinny gun animation actually has a purpose. If you hold the fire button after playing the animation the gun will immediately start firing instead of revving up normally. Essentially a cooler way to begin revving up but can also be handy if you’re expecting bugs around the corner
Engie's Grenade Launcher as a swarm clearer is my favorite. There's nothing in this game more satisfying then clearing a whole ass swarm from across the map with a few well places grenades.
14:48 Fun Fact: You can also use the Electric Arc on friendly Engie turrets. So with some coordination you can pretty much create an electric death fence with tesla coils that also shoot bullets.
My favorite weapon in the game is the Deepcore 40mm PGL. The "thunk! BOOM" that it makes along with seeing giblets of grunts, swarmers and any weakened large enemies go flying in all directions is a dopamine factory.
Combining the Nuks with cryo grenades makes pratorians an absolute joke for scout to take out. Just ice em and empty your clip into it and boom. It's one of my favourite things to do as scout. Also it negates the death fart too so that's extra nice
I’m quite an a early player with a level 10 scout and a level 8 driller and are currently doing my assignment to unlock the m1 garand and I haven’t got an over clock but I am defiantly aiming to wards the shotgun jump overlock on the double barrel
with cryo minelets, use blowthrough rounds - you damage the enemy and then when they (bullets) hit the ground after 1 second they detonate. Awesome for swarmsand well... you have a cookie and eat a cookie at the same time
The addition of the wave cooker really changed the cryo cannon. It used to be more dependent on the team to break frozen targets but now using the wave cooker with the temp shock and temp effect spread upgrades the driller is able to shred crowds faster than any other class in the game
just to point out the scouts Nuk17's, if you take the penetration upgrade on the gun the cryo minlets can go through enemies and then hit the floor creating the mine, this allow for you to effectively shoot enemies while still getting the secondary effect of the unstable overclock.
the only time i actively shot a player was when my close friend REFUSED to rock and stone... remember, if you dont rock and stone..... you AINT goin home
I think EVERY single explosion in this game has its unique punch and power to it. From the avalanche of the multi-grenade to the audible power of the Satchel Charge and Deepcore and of course Fat Boy and Detonator explosions, every throwable and explosive is cool to see and hear. The only exception is the Pheromone Grenades Scout have, which just kind of go "splat" if I remember correctly.
10:00 That reminds me, have you ever played Jet Force Gemini? A flawed game to be sure, but one I really love. Shooting bugs just feels so nice, the staggering with weapons and different effects, the way the limbs blow apart when a giant bug dies in an explosion, then there are two weapons that aren't really useful but feel really good to use, the shocker and the flamethrower. The Shocker has a really unique design. There's also the tri-rocket launcher, not as iconic as it should be. It shoots three rockets that rotate in a corkscrew there's no way you could make it cooler. Even shuriken somehow manages to be a unique icon, taking the shape of the game's logo and being high-tech throwing weapons that home in and swipe enemies from the side, making them useful for any enemies with body-blocking shields, swiping them from the side and beheading them. Also you can retrieve them afterwards. VERY satisfying to use, makes me feel like a badass every time. Again the game does have a lot of flaws, the controls are a little bit awkward and take time to get used to and the Floydd missions can piss off because they're tough to get perfect ranks on for the wrong reasons, over-sensitive turning. However there is a lot in the game I appreciate. Also this doesn't have anything to do with weapon design or shooting bugs, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the music, not many games can match such an epic orchestral sci-fi soundtrack ESPECIALLY on the N64, only sci-fi games I can think of that can top it are the Halo series and Metroid series.
My favorite weapon is either the boomstick or engis grenade launcher for the same reason. Very satisfying to shoot and reload. both giving a "heres a swarm, now there's not" with a nice sounding boom
I really like weapons in this game, you always can completely change your gameplay. I loved so much fire overclock on gauss gun, but after I unlocked fire overclocks on minigun and revolver, I figured out that they nicely complete each other. This is why this game is good, you experiment and its so fascinating.
Probably my favorite thing about the M1000 Classic is that it's basically an M1-Garand on steroids, even makes the iconic garand magazine "PING" when I reloads
In my team of four im the gunner i main the minigun because I personally just love increasing the bullet budget for deep rock galactic. But as a side note ive turned the autocannon into a dam flak gun and its so much fun
I like that you mention that even if a gun had good stats, if it looks bad it will be seen as such. We saw the exact thing in wolfenstein multiplayer. The MP40 and Thompson had the exact same stats, but because the MP40 had poor sound design, sounding like a pea shooter, everyone thought it was underpowered. So the developers released a patch saying they balanced the MP40, when all they did was change the sounds, and everyone thought it was on par with the Thompson. It's pretty cool how much just a sound can change our perception
I used to be in that camp, and then after like a hundred hours I found out the mi ogun is just underpowered, it NEEDS some aoe. Less than the autocannon maybe but really needs small explosions.
I absolutely love your comedy! It's almost as funny as those joke/satire reviews, except it also has lots of useful information and isn't just useless jokes!
Loved the video! My fav weapon is the cryo cannon. I only play driller as a green beard. I love the last talent which gives a chance for enemies to shatter immediately. It procs A TON.
The thin containment field is the only real reason to use the experimental plasma charger as far as I can tell. It just makes the Driller basically the best class in the game. And that's coming from an Engineer main.

I just watched all of your videos last night, only to see your community post and subsequent video today. The amount of effort put into these is insane and your narration style is great. 10/10 video for a 10/10 game.
Snissing is now the term for a sick ass upload. -signed by a certified gamer boy.
Favorite weapon is the Breach Cutter. Something about slicing an entire wave of bugs with 1 well placed shot is super satisfying.
God the sync in the intro is simply glorious
cryo minelets actually work with blowthrough rounds so it becomes a really efficient overclock
For Karl!
don’t know how I didn’t find you until now, your content is absolutely incredible
I gotta say I love the breach cutter. There was one moment where I was running to the drop pod low on time and turn around after a dead end to find 12 glyphids and a praetorian. 3 quick shots later and they're all dead. Brought me happiness
i dont think anyone else noticed but when "A Distant Terror" was playing in the intro, him firing the guns were PERFECTLY synced with the music
Thank you for opening my eyes to the true light of turret whip, I am forever changed, I understand now.
I don’t know why UA-cam took so long to recommend me your channel, but i’m glad it finally did !
I also love dynamic and weapon specific crosshairs. You are not alone
Amazing editing and voice over as always. Keep up the good stuff man!
I love the auto cannon with armor breaking because I like watching the shell get shredded off of the bugs.
Cool editing in the beginning.
10 secs later
Nvm all the editing is cool
This intro synchronissed with the music was very satisfying, thank you
Scout protip for the M1000: Don't focus-shot if you're planning on hitting a grunt in the face.
I discovered your channel today and just finished binging all of your Deep Rock Galactic videos. Looking forward to the next one!
Rock and Stone!!
Man, you got awesome interesting color theme and style! I love it. Keep going. This work deserves about 10 times more subs.
Thanks to you, I have now also seen the light that is TURRET WHIP. I can never go back now
LETS GOOOOO
16:03
Fun fact, that fun, spinny gun animation actually has a purpose.
Next up: Grenades of DRG lol
My favorite weapon in the game is the Deepcore 40mm PGL.
The "thunk! BOOM" that it makes along with seeing giblets of grunts, swarmers and any weakened large enemies go flying in all directions is a dopamine factory.
Combining the Nuks with cryo grenades makes pratorians an absolute joke for scout to take out. Just ice em and empty your clip into it and boom. It's one of my favourite things to do as scout.
Also it negates the death fart too so that's extra nice
The on-time shooting at the beginning was exquisite
I’m quite an a early player with a level 10 scout and a level 8 driller and are currently doing my assignment to unlock the m1 garand and I haven’t got an over clock but I am defiantly aiming to wards the shotgun jump overlock on the double barrel
with cryo minelets, use blowthrough rounds - you damage the enemy and then when they (bullets) hit the ground after 1 second they detonate. Awesome for swarmsand well... you have a cookie and eat a cookie at the same time
Karl would approve of this 🍺
Yes man!
May your beards be thick, and your gold satchels heavy!
The addition of the wave cooker really changed the cryo cannon. It used to be more dependent on the team to break frozen targets but now using the wave cooker with the temp shock and temp effect spread upgrades the driller is able to shred crowds faster than any other class in the game
The overclock that lets scout launch himself with his shotgun basically turns you into Wax from Mistborn era 2
0:30 props to you for making the shots sync up the music 👍
And the new roadmap says that we should get more weapons next year!
I really hope we get new secondary weapons
No no no you’re yanking my chain
@@RM22201 one new gun for each class. we don't know if it will be a secondary or primary yet.
just to point out the scouts Nuk17's, if you take the penetration upgrade on the gun the cryo minlets can go through enemies and then hit the floor creating the mine, this allow for you to effectively shoot enemies while still getting the secondary effect of the unstable overclock.
Fav weapon is the M1000 and I REALLY love that there's no iron sights in this game, makes the gun play so much easier.
Drg has no bad weapons
Subata with no overclocks:
Subbed. Great breakdown. Editing was fantastic, too. Rock and stone to the bone, brother.
the only time i actively shot a player was when my close friend REFUSED to rock and stone...
remember, if you dont rock and stone..... you AINT goin home
hey as a pay day 2 player im rly happy a game like this exists and its only 4 gigs
Favorite Class: Engineer/Gunner
Favorite Weapon: CRSPR Flamethrower or 40mm PGL
Favorite Overclock: Hyper-Propellant or Sticky Additive
Gunner's bulldog with magic bullet. Because it's fun to see lots of bugs died in the same time. XD
For now the best framework and paint job combination I’ve ever seen in my gun is the Rival Tech Framework+ Dark Future Paintjob
This video is so good, I really enjoy your specific style of commentary
It’s gotta be Lead Storm for me when I’m a Gunner. The lack of mobility is more than made up for by the lethality of it. Love these videos btw
9:25 Back4Blood
When the zombies take fire damage, they react as through they just got a metal pole rammed up their rear and tip backwards
The thin containment field is the only real reason to use the experimental plasma charger as far as I can tell. It just makes the Driller basically the best class in the game. And that's coming from an Engineer main.
