Jimmy Russell is so personable. He was happily signing bottles when I took my tour. Next time you are in Kentucky, you should check out Whiskey Thief in Frankfort.
My heart melted when Cooper came to say hi. Love me some cats and it is so cool that you brought your baby along. I have a sister who lives in Louisville and next time I visit I'm going to go to Wilderness Trail and meet the furry feline. Great video guys, thanks for sharing!
Glad you got to fill your own bottle at Michters. I waited 3 mornings in a row and was told because of “metrics” they wouldn’t be allowing any for the day. Very frustrating and waste of time.
Definitely book in advance for the restaurant at Bardstown. Hopefully Heaven Hill will be open then. We hear you can fill your own bottles at their visitor's center. Enjoy!
Bernheim Forest near Louisville in Kentucky and near the Knob Creek distillery has a short hike to look at the Giants, big wood sculptures along the trails that might be made with oak barrel staves.
Next time you are downtown louisville you need to hit up the Evan williams bourbon experience! You can get ECBP, Larceny, heaven hill 7 year bottled in bond, and Henry McKenna if any of those are up your alley
We are planning to do Bourbon Trail this summer and we are STOKED about WT! I am thrilled to see this in your video. I am currently searching for the separate WT video you mention, lol!
Cheers, Jamie! We had such a great time. We thought that maybe this video wasn’t produced well enough, but ultimately decided that it was a nice glimpse into our travels and the bourbon scene in Kentucky. We’re glad you enjoyed it!

My son in law and I were just in Bardstown Oct 7 & 8 . It was his first time to visit any distilleries. We toured Makers Mark, where I was a graduating Ambassador, so we got that tour and I dipped 2 bottles with my name on the label and, I also got a bottle of the FAE-02 Then to Barton, this was probably my 12th visit and tour there, when I pulled down my mask, they recognized me. Their Very Old Barton 100 proof is very good. You have to look around for it at other places. Then to Lux Row, nothing spectacular, but a nice tour. Then the next day to Four Roses, just a tasting, the tours were all booked, I did pick up a bottle of their Small Batch Select. Next was Bulleit and their tour and tasting, their tasting includes some little scent containers and mood lighting. Definitely different and unique. Then on to Buffalo for the Trace Tour, as always a great experience, and I got to say hi to my friend Freddie. I have been to Castle and Key 3 times, their Bourbon I dont think is ready yet, but their gin is good. The were aging the sourced product for Pinhook, I dont know if they still do. My first couple of time to Willet were vastly different than what I could see from your video. The parking lot in front of the distillery was gravel. And the Visitor center was in the same but smaller building, and no curved staircase. Taking a trip now involves so much planning if you want to take tours and the times and logistics all play into it more than ever. But it is still a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me ramble on. I really like your videos and opinions. Oh, I did get to meet Jimmy Russel at WT a couple of years ago and got a hat and bottle signed by him and a picture. Great gentleman.
Looks like an amazing time. Living the dream. Glad Julie got to taste this years Birthday Bourbon. It floated through CO about 2 weeks ago. People went nuts. 🤣
That’s good. I snagged last years by chance south of town here and was disappointed. So it kinda fell off my list for 4th quarter hunting. But that’s the joy of options.
We experienced all those distilleries and more while we were there last week. Wilderness Trail was one of our favorites along with Old Forester, Makers, Angel Envy, Barton and so many more (25 total). We also found some wonderful bottles that we can’t get in Virginia. We enjoyed a visit by Cooper at WT and Noah and Rowan at Willett. A bonus was visiting Smooth Ambler along the way on 64. I can’t wait to see your review of the bottles you picked up at Wilderness Trail. We bought several!
It’s easy to go overboard. Definitely plan to take your time and enjoy it slowly. We treated it like an amusement park this time and we had fun, but we’d love to spend a lot more time and do it right.
I like your honesty about your visits. Thank you. Planning a trip down there next week. Also I haven’t really sourced any good videos on cool/unique craft distilleries in Kentucky. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Excited to see what you think of your new bottle acquisitions and more so the Wilderness Trail edition! I’m Heading there next week and planned to hit most of the places you visited, so you helped answer some questions I had about certain places and what’s available or not available! Safe Travels & Cheers🥃
Thank you! That visitor's center is beautiful and well-designed. The wall of history was still fun to explore. Fortunately, it isn't too far off the beaten path so it wasn't a waste of time.
Just found your channel while browsing for the bourbon trail. Some good looking bottles there, and I'm a big fan of Makers Mark and Wilderness Trail. I've actually met Shane and Pat at a tasting in Manchester UK, and they are a couple of great guys. Their 6yr bourbon has recently hit the UK shores, but I'm yet to try it. Love their Rye though.
Here's a secret. Every Wednesday morning Barton 1792 puts out special release bottles for sale. I bought a 1792 Sweet Wheat. Forget I ever told you this.
When I was there with friends we got a 1792 Full Proof Single Barrel Select Barrel #3 they were only selling there at the gift shop. They only had 180 bottles. We were just fortunate enough to be there at the right time 😊❤️🥃❤️ Congrats on the Sweet Wheat 👍🏼
Been to Wild Turkey, (surprised you didn't hit Four Roses "across the street") Wilderness Trail (AWESOME PLACE!), Maker's Mark (got the FAE-02 as well), and Willett (another great one) - got the Pot Still too... but also got the Johnny Drum (amazing) and the Old Bardstown Bottled In Bond (you should have gotten that one... Kentucky ONLY stuff). AWESOME VIDEO! Hope you enjoyed Nashville, too!
We used to visit Kentucky annually, so we've been to a lot of these before. Four Roses is one of our favorites, but we've seen it a few times and were pressed for time. We live in Indianapolis, so that trip is a quick weekender for us. In Louisville, you certainly missed Peerless...our favorite distillery tour...right in downtown Louisville. Also, Rabbit Hole is within a 5 minute drive of there...so there is that. I wish someone would have told you how awful the 1792 visit is. When we were there last, they weren't doing any type of tour, and the tasting experience was poor at best. And back to other things you missed, when you were at Castle and Key, you were 10 minutes up the road from Woodford. I'm not a big fan, and when last we were there they weren't doing any type of tour. But also close (within 15 minute proximity on the backroads of Kentucky) is Four Roses. Having been so close, I think both of those distilleries might have been worth the effort. I totally agree with you about Willet...love that place. Great video. Thanks.
Hi Richard, we used to visit Kentucky every year when we were in the Midwest. We’ve been to all of those that you mentioned. This time around, we wanted to hit some we hadn’t been to yet.
I paid $45 for a pour of 2019 OF Birthday bourbon here at the Westgate Bourbon Bar in Beaverton Or... Not sure worth that for one pour... But it was fantastic
The opportunity to drink something that rare doesn’t come around every day. Value is subjective, but we wouldn’t fault anybody for spending a little coin to try something special to them. Glad you enjoyed it.

We only filmed at one location, and that video's coming out soon. We'd really love to do some more thorough tours on camera. Thanks for the recommendation!
Sorry for commenting on a 2 year old video, but why didn't you bring the camera into the distilleries? I'm planning on doing the trail this summer and one of the things that would have been beneficial is to see more detail of the grounds, what tours are available, what's available in the gift shops and where these places are located on a map (Google Maps to plan a route).
This was mid-pandemic. There was a glass shortage. Heaven Hill's workers were on strike. Several of the distilleries we wanted to visit weren't open to the public and the gift shops were mostly empty. There's very little we could have shared that would still be useful for planning a trip. We shared our experiences, but there was no point in putting together a guide book that would be outdated the following year.
We did not do a tour. We arrived first thing in the AM before the first tour group went in, but it seemed like they probably don't do it during busier times without a tour.
We were able to just go in and ask to fill a bottle, but the tours hadn't started yet for the day because we were really early. You probably don't have to be on a tour, but you might have to wait for folks who are on the tour to pour theirs first. Highly recommend getting there right when they open.
Honestly haven't tried that bottle in quite some time and don't have a 46 on hand to sample it against right now. I think we better give that matchup a try sometime though.
We got there before the tours started and asked if they had anything special available that day. They suggested we could fill our own bottle before the tours started. I’m guessing once tours start, the wait is considerably longer, but you can likely still fill your own bottle.
It seems like they probably have different whiskeys you can fill yourself from day to day, but this one is there pretty frequently. We were able to sneak in first thing in the morning before they started a tour to fill our own. This is one of our most expensive bottles: $150.
The best bet is probably to choose a few distilleries in a single area that you'd like to visit, then call them to set up a tour. For instance, Heaven Hill and Willett are very close to one another. Definitely call ahead to schedule your tours.
