Anyone going through this exercise let me assure you this works. I started with 15 as my average and it let me believe something was wrong with my brain. But I practiced over 3 weeks and I am averaging 28-30 with "AFS" and "CLS" tests. To compare it with real world conversation I am now able to think more faster and formulate sentences better. I also recommend to read books and try to summarize a page by speaking don't worry if it sounds gibberish just be patient and consistent with these exercises you will get better. 👍
The single most valuable tip I've noticed for verbal fluency is to adopt a posture of playfulness. There's no verbal screw-up so bad that you can't rescue it. Try to have fun and treat the conversation more like painting than like a business presentation. Even if it is a business presentation.
Every single one of us is imperfect, flawed and it's important for many to realise that. We all stink when we don't bathe enough, we all micturate, evacuate our bowels, and we *all* pick our noses at times when we think nobody will see, and anyone who claims otherwise is lying to save their persona and ego. That is my polite version of a very harsh response to total morons, that would get reported on social media :P
Romans 3:21-26 [21]But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; [22]Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: [23]For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; [24]Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: [25]Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; [26]To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Oh god, you just reminded me of this time my school brought a professional to give some science-related speech and I tried to ask a question. The lady's name was Ashley, but I hesitated mid-way through saying it and it just came out as "Asss...". There might've been a way to rescue that but I surely could not find it LOL
@@jonasandersson2371 I think it can definitely work, but only if you are normally not socially anxiety. In my case, it does not matter how fast I can talk to myself or my family because the moment I talk with someone I get anxious and foggy...
Day 1: 15 Day 2: 19 Day 3: 19 Day 4: 23.3 Day 5: 23.6 Day 6 and Day7: break Day 8: 24.3 Also did the CLS one LE: 2 Weeks after, score is 26.6 and 26.3. I highly recommend you to do this daily
My average score was 24. However, I swear some of my colleagues average 40 or more. They speak so fast and fluent it's hard to get a word in. Thank you for this gem. I now know how to improve my verbal fluency.
@@AbhinavChoudharyOfficial It is game of practise. Practise gives us result. No matter at what level you are start doing the exercise Tine has shared in this video.
Yep the 'access' part is critical to being able to articulate yourself & instantly pull from your brain. Definitely something I'm working on strengthening hardcore this year.
I'm a high school English teacher with a master's degree, so one would think I'm great at communicating, yet I've always struggled with retrieving words and information when I'm speaking. Just did the test and scored 15 😳🥹 Going to start doing daily practice.
i really need this! I think my main issue is social anxiety. when I talk to people I get self-conscious and my frontal lobe shuts down. not fun. I even felt a little anxious doing this test, imagining people were watching me, and judging. i think practicing this and seeing improvement will help in part to overcome some of the anxiousness. thank you! my score was 20.
Oh my gosh!! I literally sound so stupid every time I try to explain the simplest thing or tell a story. My friends laugh at me because they never know what I'm trying to say. It's so embarrassing! The worst is when I know people have no idea what I'm talking about, but they pretend they do and just say something like 'mmm'
Yea, that happens to me as well. I really find it hard to express myself to my friends. The proper words to use and how to articulate a full sentence together escapes me most of the time.
I think it’s pressure but also depends on circumstances. Exp like new experience. I just found something out. For me when I’m feeling down or shy I feel more pressure to express myself.
My baseline was 21. It was interesting how you brought up brain fog. Listening to my first two rounds, I had like 20 seconds of silence and me just going 'um.' I do have pretty gnarly social anxiety, particularly in front of crowds, on camera, or when my voice is being recorded. This was a great exercise. Thank you for teaching me about verbal fluency!
@@jamespak8175 its about improving the retrieval of words that you need to retrieve and speak. so with practice, you'll start to get quicker at retrieving the words you want to speak. again, you wont improve by doing this once or twice or for just one week. to really improve, you have to seek improvement by practicing with different letters and different topics and getting better with each letter and each topic so that when you find yourself in a real world situation in which you've struggled to get words out, you'll hopefully have an easier time speaking after practice than you did before.
Same. I’ve noticed I’ve had persistent brain fog since COVID. It’s a long term symptom, and it can be really frustrating when trying to articulate yourself. Exercises like this are very helpful to regaining confidence in speaking.
My baseline was 23. Funny how while doing this exercise I was getting the same mental blocks as when I usually speak to people: insecurity about how I sound, trying to use big words, worrying about people in the other room hearing me record myself. This was a really fun and informative video, gonna try this to practice speaking better
Notes: It's all about verbal fluency. It is how quickly you can access certain words and sentences when speaking and expressing. 3 steps to sounding smart when it comes to the verbal art:
• Content • Access the content • Express the content To think fast and intelligently: How fast can I retrieve the information I want to retrieve? How can I access all of it and express it? T E S T In order to see how much and how we improve over time test your verbal fluency: Controlled Oral Word Association Test (FAS) 1. use your phone to record your own voice 2. set timer for 60 seconds to say out loud words in a given category 3. repeat 3 times with words that begin with the letter f, a, s My scores: F= 21 A= 14 S= 13 Average= 16 Focus on progression, not perfection P R A C T I C E Instead of doing the same test as a form of exercise, use different topics. That way you're not memorizing but you are training your brain to retrieve content, and increase verbal fluency.
I was impressed that the most words you achieved started with the letter F, Not only was F the hardest letter for me and I performed the worst on, It was also the beginning of the exercise. This is probably showing my age a bit but my scores seemed to reflect the popularity of the letters on the show Wheel of Fortune. "A" being a popular Vowel, and "S" being a popular consonant. Having said that our scores were very similar especially if we flipped the F and S positions. My average was also 16
Me too. I never knew what autism was until a few months ago and then looked up some info on it and how it effects people and I'm 100% on the spectrum. High functioning autism or asperger's. Its given me so much insight into why I've been the way I've been my whole life. I know I'm very intelligent but if you talked to me in passing you would be like whoa that guy is weird. Hopefully this can help me out as well
I froze with anxiety, so I looked around my house and came up with "fan, appliance and suitcase. I averaged a grand total of ONE word. I'm going to make a Dr's. appointment and have him install fog lights in my brain.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 YOU ARE FUNNY!!! Good luck. This stuff does work. I've been working on the each letter of the alphabet for the past 3 weeks. I've improved from an average 14 to now 22.
Anxiety is real. It can most definitely affect verbal fluency. It means nothing except you're anxious. I hope that you get a handle on your anxiety. It's awful
I've been doing these tests for the past six days, and I'm satisfied with the results. My average score for FAS/CFL tests on my first day was 15, in comparison to my 6th day which is 24. This is the array of my results so far: [15, 17, 21, 23, 23, 24]. For the categories, it fluctuates between 9 and 20 (it depends on my familiarity with the chosen category). I believe my low average result was the consequence of severe social anxiety. The fact that I often avoid social situations prevents me from exercising word retrieval. Last update: In almost a month (for 15 days), I went from an average of 15 to 34.
S- 18 A - 20 F - 16 Avg - 18 Definitely interesting, may not attempt to improve verbal fluency immediately, but it's great to learn about a new concept and be able to reference it later.
Retrieving the content from my brain has been my number one stumbling block in life. Thankfully I found a good exercise to train and improve it in this video.
Same. I can talk easily with friends and family and even strangers in a social setting. But get me front of someone where I need to persuade them for their business and I bomb. I always seem to say "today" all the time like a fall back word. Working on it.
Poor self confidence is indeed a huge barrier to me when talking to someone. So what happened most of the time is that i stuttered and i tend to forget the words i supposed to say when talking.

you are okay. The brain just needs training like any other muscle. If you want to achieve verbal fluency ain't no fog is gonna stop you. You go girl or boy for that matter.
Ure not alone buddy xD Lmao, did better than me, I scored around 5 in each yo, brain surgery, let's get it! xD On a serous note tho, I think it depends heavily on the age of the person doing the test tbh; a teen is more likely to have a smaller vocabulary than someone at the age of 30 for instance
Certain personality types (e.g. MBTI types) will access and process things in different ways and at different speeds, so for those of you who scored in the “...go see a doctor...” range, do not fret. If so, your processing strengths may be in other areas... you may actually process faster, even with greater subtlety and nuance, perhaps, in other aspects more to do with intuition, feeling, gestalts, and so forth. That said, this can be a fun and valuable challenge to uplevel a weaker area.
I have literally been laughing my head off for over an hour now...but I was genuinely worried I would fall on the " Go see a doctor range " and thanks so much for explain it, I do fell she has the best of intentions... Just didn't use the appropriate words.
But she only said there "may' be something wrong with you. Your doctor can confirm whether or not something is actually wrong. I still think she is spot on.
I love that there's a term for this! I always admired people that are quick with like banter. I got a 16.3 though I got stuck on A for like 20 seconds lol
I got exactly the same results as you did. Felt so stupid sitting quiet for so long on A that i got caught up thinking about how long ive been quiet and then missed even more time 😂
I searched and searched different topics because I didn’t know what to call this problem I have and now I not only know but there’s help and I’m so grateful😊 thank you so much for this help!!!!
First try avg is 22. I want to get better so I'll keep practicing Two week update: Been doing 6 exercises, I would randomly pick 3 alphabets and 3 work topics and do them for a minute a each. My avg has gone up to 28 ... with me hitting 40 words sometimes. It works!
i just created a one-year developmental plan with my boss one of which is to improve my communication skills. Unfortunately, I'm not as verbally fluent as i am in writing so always get brain fogs on our calls and meetings. this is a great exercise to help me overcome those jitters and be able to think fast and talk smart. thank you for this!
Rather than develop mediocrity to match your manager why not instead submit ideas you’ve come up with after the call or meeting in the written format you’re more comfortable with.
@@brynleytalbot778 i dont know why you consider it mediocrity and matching my manager when the challenge here is to improve something im aware im no good at and the willingness to do uncomfortable tasks in exchange for long-term benefit.
@@brynleytalbot778 this is the worst advice ever, "no don't improve improvings bad, stay shit at social interactions" is basically what you just said. you have to step out of ur comfort to improve, that's how life works. if you sit in ur room all day playing fortnite, that would be ur comfort place, and you wouldn't ever talk to anyone because it would be "uncomfy". fuck comfort.
Don't be discouraged, keep practicing & with time you will see improvement. Perhaps you should try this exercise in your native tongue first to get a more accurate baseline. Wishing you the very best.
I am glad that you are talking about this. It's a problem for a lot of people including me. I always had trouble expressing my thought and ideas quickly or at an average pace actually. I had long pauses between my thoughts. What worked for me is to do a lot of videos where I had to practice expressing my thoughts.
The first time I try this, my score is 14 and I am very disappointed with myself then every day I did this so, in a span of 2 weeks, my score is ranging to 25 - 28. Yay. I will continue to do this every day. Thank you Tina.
Anxiety, depression and unhealthy lifestyles obviously create a cognitive imbalance, and brain fog so that's what I (hope) she meant by seeing a doctor! I have had brain fog since my teens due to my intestinal problems, but also recently realized I've had severe anxiety since forever, so that's a combo right there, and the reason why I can't think on my feet or concentrate. Knowing that, it makes it easier to tackle the problem so yes! Seeing a doctor could help :)
F: 26, A: 27, S: 24, average: 25.67. I love this concept of verbal fluency. Exactly the kind of exercise I’m looking for. Thank you! I’ll practice this to improve verbal fluency. Thank you!
I'm leaving my results here so that I can come back to check them again later when I've made some progress! F: 17 A:14 S: 17 Average: 16 Dated: Nov 29 2022 ❤️ I'll come back here in a month after this practice 👐 Edit 1; it's Dec 31st 2022. I'll be honest I only practiced everyday for like 10 days and then I just either forgot about it or didn't have the time for it... I was nervous to take the test again bcz I thought I'd perform poorly but I did your verbal fluency exercises and tongue twisters whenever I could and... F - 27 A - 22 S - 22 Average - 23... OmG... I actually made so much progress!!! I'm so happy!! I'll check-in next month and this time I'll definitely do it diligently! Edit 2: 3rd Feb 2023 here, I actually forgot to edit this. I did the exercises and verbal fluency 1 minute everyday all January, first this FAS score; F - 30 A - 22 S - 32 Average: 28 And ofcourse the monthly average went from 21 to 22 so that's still a slight progress for me. I'll maybe keep doing these but not quite update it here, maybe in a few months or so cuz that way the progress is cointed much better. I did improve a lot in grabbing the right words I used to struggle recalling to use in my conversations and my mind works faster compared to before. I'm more calmer when I talk so I don't feel like I'm rushing anything so that's smth I just wanted to mention as a side note. Even if the progress doesn't seem much in numbers if you stay dedicated and keep it up it will be good for your overall expression. Goodluck to anyone read comics this out there 👐
@@jamespak8175 You will be faster on your feet to think of the right words to use when talking with people. So, you're basically training your brain to be more fluent with applying words in your day to day communications.
Started on 23%. Continued this exercise 4 times a week for 1 month and increased to 34%. Results do fluctuate but keep at it as it does improve! *Update: After 3 months, on 42%. So keep going everyone! :)
Hey guys, my first average score was 19 when I did the test 3 days ago. I tried this method out consistently for 3 days to see it for myself, and my current average score is 22. So honestly speaking, this truly WORKS you guys. What I love about this one is I feel my mind is "forced" to operate faster, which somehow motivates me to come up with words as quickly as I can. I will keep on mastering this method, undoubtedly. For anyone who is still hesitant or seeing no progress yet, keep at it and keep working on it. Never give up on yourself is what I'm trying to say. Peace and Love!
I was able to get just over 50 each time. The algorithm I came up with to bring structure to the problem was simply substitute the second letter and iterate over sensible replacements in alphabetical order. For eg. If we’re finding words beginning with A: AB, AC, AD, AF and so on. In this way you’ve given structure to the problem and can now focus entirely without wasting any bandwidth. This has been my observation at least; take it with a grain of salt.
That is brilliant! But isn’t it kind of cheating? It seems to me it’s 1 step removed from memorizing words, which is why she recommends switching letters. I don’t think this technique would help in the other exercise where you recall words around a particular topic.
Damn scored a 15. I was not expecting this as a native English speaker. Gut hit. I do have low blood pressure as the result of a spinal cord injury though. Will have to step up my game.
I hope everyone remembers that what mood you are in, recent emotions, sleep and so many other factors play into this as well. Don’t be too discouraged with a bad score and honestly if you clicked this video it might have been for the same reason as me, which was because I was feeling down on myself for always being in such a brain fog state (I have ADHD). This brings in more anxiety itself and makes you feel like you need to prove yourself. This is not about proving yourself you are still valid while struggling and these thoughts stop you from performing properly anyways. These same factors can also affect how you speak in everyday conversations.
My average was a 19, it’s so frustrating when I want to make a point but I end up forgetting or not knowing the word I want to use. I’m gonna try what suggested! Thanks for the advice
Hey everyone! I’m going to update daily, I would appreciate it if you liked and replied to help me remember :) Day 1 (30/12/21): F: 25 words, A: 16 words, S: 20 words Average: 20.33 Day 2: (3/1/22) I know that I’ve been inconsistent, I will try to do this more regularly F: 21 words, A: 21 words, S: 21 words (yes I really did get the same for them all lol) Average: 21 words There is a slight improvement from the last average. Soon I will start to use other letters so that I am not just simply remembering words. Day 3 (4/1/22) B: 19 words, C: 14 words, D: 16 words Average: 16 , I know this is lower than my last average, I’m not sure why that is, maybe I just didn’t do so well this round 🤷♀️ I’ll see what I get for the other days. I also won’t use the same letters because I will remember words so I will either just pick random letters or go in alphabetical order or something? Day 4 (5/1/22) M: 17 words, T: 14 words, G: 19 words Average is 16.33, which is a slight improvement Day 5: (6/1/22) N: 14, J: 8 (didn’t do well here lol), P: 22 Average is 14.67. My average is fluctuating a lot but this is probably because of how I am changing letters for variety. Day 6 (7/1/22) H: 23 words, N: 11 (forgot that I did this recently, oops) O: 8 (didn’t do so well here) Average was 14, which is lower than last time.
I got 17.3, bit surprised by the result to be honest and so happy to have come across this video. For sure in the coming days I will be trying to take some time and practice this further.
I’m not trying to speak fast. To be honest, I’m more impressed by those who take their time and hold charge. But I do very much feel like I’m constantly losing my words, words I know I have because when I write, it’s all there… I never heard of verbal fluency before but I’m glad there’s a field to help me fix this!
When I was younger I had problems thinking of things to say to anybody so I had a lot of difficulty with making friends. I have always been better at writing than speaking. I can write great poetry but when it comes to speaking I have found it harder. I'm crap at job interviews. I have joined a public speaking club to help with speaking in front of people.
As a non-native speaker, I think this test is also a good indicator for "active vocabulary"(words that I can easily produce) rather than most vocab tests that focuses on "passive vocabulary" (words that I know the meaning when seeing it) PS: my first test average is 15, hopefully it will imporve
Thats the comment I was looking for. Even though this video is mainly for native speakers or for your mother tongue, I found it quite useful for my English progress. And you are on the right spot, I have memorized (unfortunately with a wrong method) thousands of English words and I easily understand whenever I read or listen something. However, when it comes to speaking it is the hardest thing to retrieve correct word from deep down of mu memory. Do you do anything special for this ? Have you overcome the issue? Any comments or recommends may help a lot. Many thanks
OMG my average was 12 - and I need to speak and explain things for my career! I knew I was having trouble recalling information from my brain! I am so looking forward to practicing these exercises everyday and I hope to see an improvement. Thank you so much!
Just did the 'test'. Didn't do very well - my average was low. But this seems like a very good exercise, going forward, and I think I will try it to improve my verbal fluency. Thank you very much!
Im so glad I found this channel. I've been searching so long or some real, no nonsense, practical approaches to improve communication and verbal fluency. Thanks Tina!!
21 For English and 21 for Spanish, great tips Tina I'm going to practice, I feel that sometimes I mix both languages and that make me slow when I get the words.
I was 18 in English and 24 in my native language, I'm going to use this method to improve my verbal fluency and vocabulary diversity since I keep forgetting words that are useful and more nuanced, something I especially need now that I'm planning to take the CAE
Thank you, Lady Tina, for introducing this exercise. It works. I have been doing it several times for weeks and I can say that my fluency improved. I am able to think and speak faster in English as compared before. It trains your brain to think spontaneously.
F-35 A-20 S-25 My average is 26.67… I think I did well for an 18 year old… I’m not necessarily good at explaining things to people like when I’m asked to teach someone something but in a debate I’m good at articulating my words in a coherent easy manner for understanding at least that’s what I’ve been told :)
Started three days ago with average of 13, did the AFS in the forth time with average of 20. Not much noticeable improvement in conversations, but it’s a process! Starting a podcast soon, hopefully in a month there will be some change!
To help in conversations. I think trying the test with topics or events would help. Also on the in between time diving into common topics/TV shows your friends or fam might often talk about...
As someone who doesn't get a chance to speak a lot it took me a moment to work it out, so don't feel bad or worried if you don't get it the first time you don't need a doctor.. I just tried use unique words the next try and found myself getting words out much quicker.
Absolutely, authenticity is very important. Humans have adapted to discern these cues fairly quickly over evolution. Authenticity is clearly excuding on the facs scale of the 43 human expression muscle expressions :). New subscriber here :)
I always have a tough time speaking publicly because of this. I worry that I don't get my points across because I feel like a terrible verbal communicator. I only scored the average of 16 here :( But, I can keep practicing this, and as others commented I can get better!
I got an average of 23! Letter S really saved me, there are so many 3-letter words to associate with. I don't know why I got stucked in letter A though, it seems to have a lot of fairly simple and decent words and yet I only got 17.
I’m a few seconds in and you’re explaining THE ROOT OF ALL OF MY SOCIAL PROBLEMS. I’m too nervous to talk to people because it happens to me EVERY TIME. This video is a godsend.
I got 45. But given how good my vocabulary has been in the past, I can see that I've let myself go. I still struggle with conversations sometimes. I'm definitely gonna try and improve my speech skills.
I averaged 47 and was really struggling... I have always had a difficult time expressing myself fluently when I feel pressured. With fibro, I definitely have brain fog, which I've improved using natural options. However, I have always been self-conscious about "freezing" and inaccurately expressing myself when I'm stressed. I am so excited I ran across your video. Will be working "retrieving" those elusive words. Thank you!
I am a native portuguese speaker working in a french speaking company. I have low verbal fluency already in portuguese so imagine how horrible I sound when talking to themhen I am talking to them. I scored 12. Thanks for that.
GOD! i need to write down these tips in a note book! I am SUCH a fast talker and slow thinker sometimes....ooops! lol Thanks for finding me on YT I am excited to learn from you, this is valuable information...I may have manifested it as i've been wanting to get better at this for my livestreams!!! Your appreciated!
Interesting. I will be getting back to it to retest. HOWEVER, I'd strongly recommend anyone to use a random letter generator to come up with different letter each time AND not do the 3-2-1 count-in. All of that to prevent your brain to work on that task in advance. (i.e. revisiting the words you've used in the previous session or having a few additional seconds to think it through). I would also consider using subject-specific tests (i.e. foods only, animals only, names only and so on).
I was just recommended this video from youtube, and after doing that test, my average was 36. Though this was my first attempt, I feel this is kind of low but will work on improving on that. The idea of this video really helps especially at times when you are at a job interview or arguing for or against something and can't find the right words to make your points
I didn't even though this was a thing, so I'm so happy I've found your content!!! This is exactly what I've always struggled with and now I know some ways to work on it. Def plan on taking your course soon...thanks:)
that is actually what i'm looking for, i get stuck everytime i want to explain sth in english although my vocabs and grammar are pretty well, thank u Tina for sharing this precious information, i'm looking forward to seeing your next video Love from Vietnam
I had to get off YT go to my memo voice record app and then go back to YT and then go back and count. Then I went to my calculator app and did the math. Now I feel extra slow 😂😂😂 also edited. 🤦♀️
I`m from the Netherlands where the 6 culture is a big thing. To explain this to non dutch people it`s about scoring just enough to pass from a scale from 1 to 10. With my score of 19.3 i can proudly say i just made it. Definitly going to practise though. Also i did this in english, not my native language, so i guess i deserve a pat on the back.
Wow - once she announced 18 and under need to see a doctor, all of a sudden there was a lot at stake!!! Phew - I averaged 19 on first attempt. I can continue on with my life as is... I will work towards 30 though. Thanks for the exercise! I will use it in Primary School classrooms as a Literacy warm-up activity!
First time I did this test with the letters F A S I got 18.6. I've been doing the verbal fluency test more consistently now but with different letters. I noticed some progress recently with my score rising to 22
Thank you Tina, for sharing this awesome tool! I had fun with words and got an average of 17, haha! I'd like to take the challenge of practicing it day-to-day with different topics. PLUS, I'd like to try this out for my 6-year old daughter as one topic on our homeschooling module, YAY!
That's great Heartie! That's a great idea to introduce this with your daughter as part of homeschooling. She'll be far ahead and hopefully have some fun with it too.💃
F- 20, A- 14, S- 16 I scored 16.6 wow I’m not even surprised it came out this slow. I speak 5 languages but I’m always running out of words… and I hate that I can deliver my thoughts and feelings into organized sentences. Improving my verbal fluency is my top priority now!
Thanks so much for the video, looking forward to practicing this. A couple of questions though: 1) If we choose different topics each day, what's the best way to measure progress? I'm sure I can come up with way more on some topics than others. 2) How do you measure it when doing those topics? For FAS, you add them, then average altogether. Would you do 3 different topics then average them maybe?
Anyone going through this exercise let me assure you this works. I started with 15 as my average and it let me believe something was wrong with my brain.
Romans 3:21-26
[21]But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
[22]Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
[23]For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
[24]Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
[25]Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
[26]To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Oh god, you just reminded me of this time my school brought a professional to give some science-related speech and I tried to ask a question. The lady's name was Ashley, but I hesitated mid-way through saying it and it just came out as "Asss...". There might've been a way to rescue that but I surely could not find it LOL

That's interesting! Did you always know how to rap or is that something you develop over time?
I'm a high school English teacher with a master's degree, so one would think I'm great at communicating, yet I've always struggled with retrieving words and information when I'm speaking. Just did the test and scored 15 😳🥹 Going to start doing daily practice.

i really need this! I think my main issue is social anxiety. when I talk to people I get self-conscious and my frontal lobe shuts down. not fun. I even felt a little anxious doing this test, imagining people were watching me, and judging. i think practicing this and seeing improvement will help in part to overcome some of the anxiousness. thank you! my score was 20.

So whats the point of this exercise? Will this help me speak faster? or articulate??
I dont see how it does??
@@jamespak8175 its about improving the retrieval of words that you need to retrieve and speak. so with practice, you'll start to get quicker at retrieving the words you want to speak. again, you wont improve by doing this once or twice or for just one week. to really improve, you have to seek improvement by practicing with different letters and different topics and getting better with each letter and each topic so that when you find yourself in a real world situation in which you've struggled to get words out, you'll hopefully have an easier time speaking after practice than you did before.
@@jamskaterpete Ty for the thoughtful response!!! love it!

Notes:
It's all about verbal fluency. It is how quickly you can access certain words and sentences when speaking and expressing.
3 steps to sounding smart when it comes to the verbal art:
• Content
• Access the content
• Express the content
To think fast and intelligently:
How fast can I retrieve the information I want to retrieve?
How can I access all of it and express it?
T E S T
In order to see how much and how we improve over time test your verbal fluency:

I was impressed that the most words you achieved started with the letter F, Not only was F the hardest letter for me and I performed the worst on, It was also the beginning of the exercise. This is probably showing my age a bit but my scores seemed to reflect the popularity of the letters on the show Wheel of Fortune. "A" being a popular Vowel, and "S" being a popular consonant. Having said that our scores were very similar especially if we flipped the F and S positions. My average was also 16

So funny 🤣 😆
I've been doing these tests for the past six days, and I'm satisfied with the results. My average score for FAS/CFL tests on my first day was 15, in comparison to my 6th day which is 24. This is the array of my results so far: [15, 17, 21, 23, 23, 24]. For the categories, it fluctuates between 9 and 20 (it depends on my familiarity with the chosen category). I believe my low average result was the consequence of severe social anxiety. The fact that I often avoid social situations prevents me from exercising word retrieval.

So whats the point of this exercise? Will this help me speak faster? or articulate??

I was able to get just over 50 each time. The algorithm I came up with to bring structure to the problem was simply substitute the second letter and iterate over sensible replacements in alphabetical order. For eg. If we’re finding words beginning with A: AB, AC, AD, AF and so on. In this way you’ve given structure to the problem and can now focus entirely without wasting any bandwidth. This has been my observation at least; take it with a grain of salt.
Does names beginning with A also count as words?
That is brilliant! But isn’t it kind of cheating? It seems to me it’s 1 step removed from memorizing words, which is why she recommends switching letters. I don’t think this technique would help in the other exercise where you recall words around a particular topic.
This is a brilliant system, a hack indeed😊
THIS IS THE BEST EXERCISE FOR VERBAL FLUENCY I SWEAR, WE COULD DELETE ALL OTHER VIDEOS ON THIS CONTENT CAUSE THIS IS ENOUGH AND THE CUTTING EDGE OF IT
Damn scored a 15.

I never heard of verbal fluency before but I’m glad there’s a field to help me fix this!
As a non-native speaker, I think this test is also a good indicator for "active vocabulary"(words that I can easily produce) rather than most vocab tests that focuses on "passive vocabulary" (words that I know the meaning when seeing it) PS: my first test average is 15, hopefully it will imporve
you can do to in your own native language though. I think this test was designed for people to do it in their native language
Many thanks

40seconds into the vid and she already explained me perfectly
Progression over perfection. 🔥
Yeah...im using this💯🔥
Just did the 'test'.
So whats the point of this exercise? Will this help me speak faster? or articulate??
I dont see how it does??
Aum Mai Gahd! This is the perfect video to use against my siblings right now!
🤣🤣🤣💯
love how she speaks with sharp t's.... that enunciation cannot hurt!
21 For English and 21 for Spanish, great tips Tina I'm going to practice, I feel that sometimes I mix both languages and that make me slow when I get the words.
I know what you mean Andres.
21 in each is a great baseline!
I also got 21. I too mix up my English and Spanish 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for the prompt! My average was 17. I have a medical condition that causes brain fog. I am going to start doing these exercises again!
My score was 25! I’m so excited to refresh my vocabulary skills. Thanks Tina
Good job!!! 🥰
I was 18 in English and 24 in my native language, I'm going to use this method to improve my verbal fluency and vocabulary diversity since I keep forgetting words that are useful and more nuanced, something I especially need now that I'm planning to take the CAE
I average 23. It's so good to find useful things on social media that will be very helpful to you in your social life!
Thank you, Lady Tina, for introducing this exercise. It works. I have been doing it several times for weeks and I can say that my fluency improved. I am able to think and speak faster in English as compared before. It trains your brain to think spontaneously.
Glad to hear you've been working on it and it's paying off!
So whats the point of this exercise? Will this help me speak faster? or articulate??

My average is 26.67… I think I did well for an 18 year old… I’m not necessarily good at explaining things to people like when I’m asked to teach someone something but in a debate I’m good at articulating my words in a coherent easy manner for understanding at least that’s what I’ve been told :)
Started three days ago with average of 13, did the AFS in the forth time with average of 20. Not much noticeable improvement in conversations, but it’s a process! Starting a podcast soon, hopefully in a month there will be some change!
To help in conversations. I think trying the test with topics or events would help.
Also on the in between time diving into common topics/TV shows your friends or fam might often talk about...
how's your progress?
So whats the point of this exercise? Will this help me speak faster? or articulate??
I dont see how it does??
Where’s the podcast??
My average was just 20. I do have major brain fog alot and it worries me. This kind of confirms it. I will keep practicing this. Thank you!
As someone who doesn't get a chance to speak a lot it took me a moment to work it out, so don't feel bad or worried if you don't get it the first time you don't need a doctor.. I just tried use unique words the next try and found myself getting words out much quicker.
Thank you for this exercise. The key is self confidence, not perfection be gentle on yourself. Practice makes perfect, thank you for sharing.
You are my new favorite channel, Tina! You have magnetic authenticity when you deliver your valuable content. Love love love.😍😍
What an honor!🙏🙏🙏
Your work place bully defense video helped me so much. Thank you thank you!!
I only scored the average of 16 here :( But, I can keep practicing this, and as others commented I can get better!
ok! i did FAS and CLS and this is how i averaged these past few days
day1- 20.2
day2- 22.5
day3- 24
day4- 26
day5- 28.2
day6- N/A
day7- 27.4
I got 24.33, F(24) A(23) S(26). I'll practice and come back with an update and how my communications skills have changed. Thanks a ton!
I got an average of 23! Letter S really saved me, there are so many 3-letter words to associate with. I don't know why I got stucked in letter A though, it seems to have a lot of fairly simple and decent words and yet I only got 17.
This is gold. Thank you for sharing this exercise. I got an average of 19.66, but on A & S i got pretty stuck
That's a good start! We usually have specific letters that get us stuck.👌
I’m a few seconds in and you’re explaining THE ROOT OF ALL OF MY SOCIAL PROBLEMS. I’m too nervous to talk to people because it happens to me EVERY TIME. This video is a godsend.
When I first discovered verbal fluency, it was an aha moment for me, so I'm glad I was able to share this!
This woman is very good at public speaking
F - 20
A -22
S - 13
Avg - 18.3
Would try and update my progress at intervals.
Thanks for the helpful tip.
I got 45. But given how good my vocabulary has been in the past, I can see that I've let myself go. I still struggle with conversations sometimes. I'm definitely gonna try and improve my speech skills.
20. Sometimes I have so many thoughts and ideas running through my mind, while I'm talking, it's distracting and affects my flow.
Thank you!
47 it’s quite good. Do you find it less difficult expressing yourself fluently when you feel pressured now?
man get the hell out of here with your humble-brag
47 words total means you averaged 15.66 though
I am a native portuguese speaker working in a french speaking company. I have low verbal fluency already in portuguese so imagine how horrible I sound when talking to themhen I am talking to them. I scored 12. Thanks for that.
I wish everyone watches this video a lot of people need help and are afraid to get it. Great work 👏🏽
I've got 14 in average, but I knew already that I have issues. My appointment at a neurologist will be in April
Hope its alright rn
@@sri-jh2xl Thank you. I'm in the process of getting checked for ADHD and an examination of my hormone levels
F = 29, A = 26, S = 36 Working on growing this skill !
You're already off to a good start!
GOD! i need to write down these tips in a note book! I am SUCH a fast talker and slow thinker sometimes....ooops! lol Thanks for finding me on YT I am excited to learn from you, this is valuable information...I may have manifested it as i've been wanting to get better at this for my livestreams!!! Your appreciated!
Aww thank you so much Liz, I appreciate that and glad I found you too!💖
Interesting.
Def plan on taking your course soon...thanks:)
that is actually what i'm looking for, i get stuck everytime i want to explain sth in english although my vocabs and grammar are pretty well, thank u Tina for sharing this precious information, i'm looking forward to seeing your next video

I'm DEAAAAAD.😂😂😂
One of the best comments.
@@TinaLeder haha glad I made you laugh 😂
@@AbhinavChoudharyOfficial offfh i am sorry :/ hey don’t give up though 1 test doesn’t define you! Just keep trying and practicing!
33.33 on 2nd round.
First time I did this test with the letters F A S I got 18.6. I've been doing the verbal fluency test more consistently now but with different letters. I noticed some progress recently with my score rising to 22
I got 23 as my average, this was a great test.👌🔥 After the time is up, the words start rolling 😂🤣😭 🤦♀️
She'll be far ahead and hopefully have some fun with it too.💃
Hello
F- 20, A- 14, S- 16 I scored 16.6 wow I’m not even surprised it came out this slow. I speak 5 languages but I’m always running out of words… and I hate that I can deliver my thoughts and feelings into organized sentences. Improving my verbal fluency is my top priority now!
Thanks so much for the video, looking forward to practicing this.
A couple of questions though:
1) If we choose different topics each day, what's the best way to measure progress? I'm sure I can come up with way more on some topics than others.
2) How do you measure it when doing those topics? For FAS, you add them, then average altogether. Would you do 3 different topics then average them maybe?
@@periteu Great, thanks for the advice!
