Slowing down when you speak is actually a very good advice and practice, I find, for my anxiety. It also allows me to appear more deliberate and confident. When I try to say everything in mind, it doesn't give give my words "currency" because no one can tell what is important and what is just a passing thought. It is so hard to do. I just realized this and am practicing and being more cognizant of my words.

'neutral US' english (like what you see in US movies and television) is, for the most part, the most consistent and correct pronunciations. Granted US neutral does say Aluminum instead of aluminium, but other than that it is basically textbook pronunciation.

You had me laughing out loud at 2.12 -- not at you, but remembering when I would be doing these very exercises in the car, alone at 4am, on my way to present my early-morning radio program. As you'd know, I couldn't drink coffee before going on air because it tightens the vocal cords, so I'd drive along, uncaffeinated, making all sorts of funny noises and faces. One morning at the traffic lights, I look to the side and there's a rather elderly gentleman, doing the same thing and nodding to me, with a great smile on his face. He wound down his window and called out, "I'm a singer too!". Now, I can't sing, but those exercises did help with going on air at 5am! Thanks for the memory and the giggle (and for all your wonderful videos) 💐

After doing choir and cheer (where you have to yell healthily for hours), I noticed this: speaking from your stomach instead of from your throat can add a lot of volume to your speaking voice. We treat a variety of disorders across the lifespan but most commonly: in children we treat speech sound articulation (like saying R words) and language disorders. And in adults, we treat medical disorders like swallowing problems and cognitive (attention, memory, etc). We also treat articulation in adults, like if their lips are drooping on one side from a stroke. I personally work in a hospital and mostly treat swallowing problems.

I feel like she is holding back her natural voice and expression to sound more calm or velvety than is really necessary. I hear this a lot in yoga teachers and relaxation experts. I think it takes away from building rapport because it doesn't sound like a genuine way to make a connection. Appropriate for some contexts, but really awkward for others. For example, it isn't the best way to deliver a joke or energize people at a team building event.

I think her voice is so soothing, calm and slow. She might not be heard in a group of assertive people!

@@louse_mouse I find the accent very annoyingly grating.

Agree. That’s what I experienced. My voice and diction is a lot like hers and people talk over me in business settings. I had to get my rushed, running out of air, loud, bitchy voice to get heard which is a lot of work for me. When you speak calmly in those settings people take it as a sign of weakness

@@patsmythe949 An obnoxiously loud culture that is. It should hit you when you travel abroad, if you are able to see or think of yourself outside of your own cultural paradigms that is, american and british travellers are awfully loud. Run into a group of young british and americans... its like if they were putting on a show. All the space they take, vocally, i find it so cringe.

Has to do with this typical individualist-consummerist mindset that prevails in white majority english speaking countries. Like if being loud, with all the giggles and the dramatic tones, was the only way they know to feel like they are relevant, like they are "expressing themselves"

This is an excellent video for any time of year or anywhere you may travel. I love it! Especially since I have to wear a protective mask at work every day and I notice someone leaning over to me trying to listen. It is quite uncomfortable trying to communicate and then I found your video here on UA-cam. Happily subscribed. Thank you very much, Audrey!
