Metallurgist here.
The ferric chloride you use for etching the blade oxidises the steels in the blade according to their hardness, softer gets darker, harder gets lighter.
A simple method for identifying the shapes that existed in the metals that make up the damascus you forge.
Nice work, nice result.
Я могу заточить кровельное железо так что он будет резать бумагу, считаю что это не фактор качества стали
Borax helps remove impurities from the metal.
Etching dissolves softer parts of the metal away, leaving behind a pattern. The chain is made of different types of metal for the outside plates to the rollers that are in the middle. Hope that helps. Love your videos.
Etching as well the areas of steel that have the highest internal tension stress will dissolve faster into the acid, so those areas will etch faster, while the areas that are the most compressed will, due to the atoms being forced slightly closer together, be slower to dissolve relative to the stressed areas. Also any grain boundaries in the crystals will allow the liquid to penetrate, deepening those boundaries, and exposing the darker harder metal oxides there to see.
@@SeanBZA I did not know this. Thanks for the info!
Merci pour l'info!
thanks for info

From the beginning to the end I was fascinated by so much craftsmanship. Fantastic!!!

Fantastic video! Very educational. Hilarious and accurate subtitles, too. Thank you from England.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Отличная работа!!!!! Молодец!!!!
한 단계 한 단계 정성과 기술이 감동을 줍니다. 부디, 안전하고 건강하게 작업하세요.
고맙습니다.
You say you have poor English skills, but you are able to articulate things much better than the vast majority of non-native speakers and an alarmingly high number of native speakers, so you're doing better than you might think.
Nice looking knife and great video 👍
Ficou muito bonita.

MAGNIFICENT!
You're still the best of all these manufacturing channels. This was great from beginning to end!
Wow, thank you!
@@Factory_Monster its the dry humor that really sets you apart. "Not the north" kills me every time 😅

Borax is used as a flux. Could also be Borax and Ammonium Chloride. "Flux is used in forge welding to keep the metal surfaces from oxidizing and to extract other impurities from the metal." The flux mixes with the oxides that form and lowers the melting temperature and the viscosity of the oxides allowing the scale to be easy removed.
This channel is immaculate 👑
Thank you!
Show de bola campeão.
It is my understanding that borax lowers the melting temperature of the oxide so it will get squeezed out during forging allowing a good forge weld.
It doesn't lower the melting temp, it acts as a flux and oxidation reducing agent. Basically, prevents oxidation from occurring which helps with the consolidation process - which is when the individual pieces of steel are forged together into a single mass. It's done with a forging hammer - light, easy, blows. The powerhammer is for flattening and shaping the mass after consolidation.

It looks a little porous, but it's a beautiful pattern. Having watched at least 10 episodes of "Forged in Fire" practically makes me an expert. "Your KNIFE..... will CUT!"
Meh... watch @AlecSteele - less show, more know.
Your knife is beautiful the chain pattern really looks good
Não seria correto primeiro fazer o desbaste e só depois fazer a têmpera?
Бесконечно можно смотреть на три вещи: как горит огонь, как течет вода и как работают другие люди. 😁

Your English is a whole lot better than my Korean! :)
Вы спрашивали о процессе травления: клинок в хлорное железо (продаётся в любом радиомагазине) , потом промыть водой, потом в раствор пищевой соды (останавливает реакцию травления).
Great video! To me, its just a thick, homemade Damascus knife with not so great grinds & bevel...not to put it down, but its a quickly made(in knife-build terms) breakable blade. Looks pretty at first glance tho!

Etching is the process in which the more susceptible steels are dissolved by the acid at a greater rate than the other steel, leaving a pattern with varying height.

Seriously.

I have seen chain pattern wielded steel blades before this one is as good as any others I have seen. Well done. Nice choice of handle scales as well.
