Great info about the edge retention, I didn't know that the GECs could hold an edge that much longer. Thanks for the comparison, and for a second look at the Blue Jane. Have a great night, E!

Hey E, great video. Rough day in the “shop” today so that little praise is just what I needed. Just a little correction, there does have to be some type of liner with that denim. Either brass or g-10 but the denim is too rough to not have a liner. Don’t want any confusion 😂

GEC is a "Traditional" knife maker. Pocket knives used to come almost exclusively flat ground. The edge of the knife sometimes came sharp enough to cut, but most times it was ground acute and had just a pass or two on the edge at the correct sharpening angle. Traditional knife makers assumed the purchaser would put their own edge on the blade how they needed it for whatever jobs they were buying the knife for. They understood in the past that men were going to sharpen the hell out of their knife and didn't see a need to sell someone a knife that was scary sharp out the box.

Also you are less likely to loose a GEC knife. In theory at least. There's a philosophy, that says, if you keep loosing your umbrella, buy an expensive umbrella. The theory being if you ascribe value to something you are more likely to instictively take care of it, which is especially true of a hand made item which someone else has also valued during it's manufacture. So if you keep loosing your knives, buy an expensive knife, you'll look after it more and as you carry more, as each year passes it will become more and more valuable to you, eventually negating the initial purchase price. Eventually if the time comes, when you are ready to pass it on to a loved one, to them it becomes more than just a knife but an object, full of fond memories that reminds the recipient of it's original owner, now it is priceless.

One day I hope to get a GEC knife. Sorry about your black eye. Many, many years ago I gave my late Wife two black eyes. We had been grocery shopping and she was on the porch and I was handing her the stuff. I threw a bundle of toilet paper up to her. She didn't catch it and it hit her in the face. The next morning she had two black eyes. I felt so bad. She blew it off, but it took me a while to stop feeling so bad about it. Oh well, sorry about the story. Thanks for the video.

I took a peek into GEC knives and the price is outrageous. I asked chat GPT if some other classic style manufacturers would make knife's in high carbon steel and he said Buck has a 420 HC that is not high carbon but is heat treated to give results that could come near HCS. Do you know of any other classic style manufacturers that produced with high carbon steel that are not fashionable? And thus are not so expensive. Finish knives, use high carbon still and are extremely cheap. I have a marttinni knife that is just outstanding in edge retention and was only twenty nine bucks.

You have to go through a pile of new ones to find hopefully one of them that doesn't have gaps, proud pins, cracked scales, touch transitions or excessive blade wobble. I have bought MANY case knives over the last few years and most of them were on par with low end Rough Ryder...
GEC blows Case out of the water, its comparing a Rolls Royce to a Yugo... Rough Ryder Reserve is superior to Case, and cheaper.

Most new case knives are garbage. Their quality, and that of their parent company Zippo, has gone down hill... If you get a "good one", it's fine, but that will be the exception rather than the norm. Case can't compare to Rough Ryder Reserves, let alone with a GEC.
For Case money, you can get Rough Rider Reserve which offers better materials, better fit and finish, etc....
I will no longer buy anything from Case until I can inspect it first hand.... Luckily my local dealer, who agrees with me, lets me open up the boxes and go through them all in the hopes that I find one that is good enough to purchase...
