  • Leather carving for beginners - swivel knife tutorial - How to transfer pattern onto leather. Practice leather carving on a 4" x 4" leather coffee coaster which is great for trying out new designs and hone your skills on leather carving. This is around a 12 ounce piece of saddle skirting that has been wet and cased and is now ready to receive a design either traced on or a tap off design.

    More about this video Leather carving for beginners - swivel knife tutorial - How to transfer pattern onto leather.
    Whatever design you can draw onto a piece of paper you can transfer over to the wet and cased leather with a small C.S. Osborne saddlers awl.
    You can make a leather tap off pattern and use it over and over and quickly transfer you design so it can be cut in and tooled.
    As you can see in this UA-cam tutorial I tapped off the design and I have a faint mark that I can use to follow and cut the flower design into the leather.
    I am using a brass Barry King swivel knife with a 1/2" barrel and the blade is hollow ground straight 1/4" in width.
    After the leather dries out a little bit but is still slightly damp I will bevel around the flower with a Craftool B802 and use a 22 ounce Maul Master leather maul for tapping the leather tool.
    You can see in just a minute or so I cut this flower into the leather after I tapped it off.

    Thank you very much for making these videos! I'm new and learning a lot from them. How wet or dry should the leather be for stamping?

      Fairly damp leather not to wet though. Happy New Year!

    Excellent video .
    My question is once the paper template is scratched over is it then ripped?

      You can re-use the pattern many times. You really don't have to press that hard to transfer the pattern onto wet and cased leather. Thanks for asking!

    Hi Bruce, great video as always. Is the tap off made from leather? Any tutorials on making a tapoff?

    • @cheaneysaddles
      @cheaneysaddles  7 років тому +1

      Yes the tapoff is made of leather. Just carve your design into leather and let it dry out then use it as a tapoff pattern. Bruce

    I am just starting to try leather works...my swivel knife I just purchased doesn't cut well...do you think it needs to be sharpened?? Or what could be the problem??

    • @cheaneysaddles
      @cheaneysaddles  7 років тому +1

      Yes, you will have to learn how to polish and hone your swivel knife blade and keep the edge stropped. This will enable you to cut in designs much more smoothly.
