Beautiful work. I'm a machinist myself, so it's always incredibly interesting to me to see other fields of craftmanship in action. The right tools really do make a world of difference with how easily they allow patterns to be transferred or decorated onto different materials.
Thank you Bruce it reminded me of a craft I was taught in school 35 yrs ago, we then went on to use them as templates for printing on fabric with ink. Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thank you. Keep safe 😘.
Bruce Cheaney, you are an amazing leather craftsman and artist! I appreciate soo much the educational videos and your willingness to want to share your craft and your drive to help and educate others to become better leather craftsman and women. For us beginners, your clearly spoken and easy to follow instructions and profound knowledge of the craft that you share with us is invaluable. Your tutorials are the best there is on UA-cam imo and allot of others too. Thank you and please keep doing what you do.
I find that I have trouble with the swivel knife not getting a wide enough cut to be followed easily when shading. I try to keep it sharp but maybe I need new blades cause it sure doesnt cut like yours does. I like your videos cause Im a beginner so simple is good for me, thanks
@@cheaneysaddles Thanks for the reply Bruce I admit its a Amazon cheapy, namely a Citian High Carbon Steel which seems well built but not as sharp as it should be, I'm trying to find blades for it now, but none so far
Thanks for the video. You gave me some great ideas to add to the smaller items I make. Quick and simple but look very nice. Some times it is overwhelming with some of the more intricate patterns. Where do you get your leather? Thanks again.
Bruce I really appreciate you taking your time to help out us beginners. I just started tooling about 2 years ago. I've been a knife maker since 1966, but never made sheathes until the 80's, then, like I said about 2 years ago I caught the tooling bug from your videos ( in my case it's more like the failing bug). One thing I've noticed with toolers here on UA-cam, you folks make it look a LOT easier than it is. I've invested a lot of money in leather, tools and finishes, mostly 3-D stamps due to my inability to actually tool. I had a stroke 3 years ago and thought this would be great therapy, not so sure now? I really appreciate ANY tooling videos aimed at the basics and the beginner. Please post more beginner videos, simple works best for me and maybe others too. I have 2 or 3 tooling pattern books with and a slew of Craft Aid plastic patterns. Not much use to me. Once I do the layout, I'm lost. God bless.DavePappy Dave's KnivesPennsylvania
Thanks for this video Bruce it really helps seeing how you approach making your designs. I have a quick question how do you make long straps or belts. I have a need for some straps around 90 inches long. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you again for all of your videos they are very inspirational. All the best from the UK
Eddie, The only way I can think of is to purchase a large cowhide side that is long or cut the strips out of the hide at a angle. Thanks for watching my videos and your comment. Bruce
Thank you for your time Bruce, I think I'm going to try splicing two together with a pig skin lining if I use a 45 Angel and hide the seam in the design. As its a belt I think the lining and stitching will be strong enough. Keep up the great work.
Great Video's!! I'm a beginner Bruce, what is the weight of the leather your using here? Thanks for all your video's, really has helped me! I'll keep watching! your a real pro!
Bruce, another great video for us. Question: The knife you showed (with the curved blade) I have one that I bought from Tandy, but they no longer sell the curved blades, which I like better than the straight ones. Where can I find these? Bet you will say from Barry King.
Weaver Leather, Mt. Hope Ohio has packages of twelve. There is a huge need in the leather craft market place for curved blade knives and curved knife blades. The more curve the more effective you can cut by hand.
It's really difficult to tell what you're doing, and what you're doing it with, when your hands and fingers are always in the way of the lens. So the video becomes more like an idea of what could be done, than a video showing a person how to do something.
Thank You Bruce!!! I have seen this year’s ago and I lost my phone when it fell out of my pocket into a watering trough! I’m glad to see it again
Good deal glad your back!
Excelente saludos👍👍👍

Great video... But I couldn't see what way you had the beveling tool facing...
Steep side in the swivel cut.

I agree. Strange that my local Tandy doesn't carry them anymore. The national company does I found.
I found mine at my local Tandy in Shoreline, wa.
You can also buy some of these knives at a woodcarving store, since they are basically the same. i know because I used to do woodcarving.
