This is not only the best walkthrough on circuit I've seen, but perhaps the best tutorial I've ever watched on UA-cam. Amazing product, build, instruction, and work. Trying this this weekend. Thank you so much!
I bought my Cricut Maker YEARS ago and was quickly overwhelmed so it sat gathering dust until I discovered a couple of UA-cam channels that made it look not only fun but EASY! My “go to” being YOUR channel. I made my VERY FIRST PROJECT LAST WEEK! And thanks to your easy tutorials, I was able to pull it off without a hitch on my very first try! I am so thankful I stumbled across your channel because this was a very special project I needed to do in a short period of time as the intended recipient was someone I had never met (but will now be a forever part of my family) and was only in town for one week and I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. It turned out BEAUTIFULLY and she LOVED IT! Now I’m off to find some leather and try this new adventure! Thank you sooooo much for sharing your knowledge and all the time you spend perfecting your craft to help us newbies LOVE our machines! ❤
THIS VIDEO was THE BEST ONE i have SEEn in My WHOLE 51 YEARS!!!!😲😲😲😲🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 You SHOULD Have HAD A MILLION for this VIDEO And If You TAUGHT Video CLASSES on EDITING I WOULD BUY IT!!! Be BLESSED😇
Wow! I really appreciate the clear, no-nonsense (i.e. the lack of annoying chitchat) approach of this video, no to mention the years of experimenting that it took to get to a good, usable formula. Thank you Clever Someday!
As a leather worker, I always thought there must be a way to use the Cricut Maker to tool leather. Thank you sooo much for all your time in discovering the way!! This has created endless possibilities for me in my leather shop!!
I have to say this is the best tutorial I have ever seen and listened to. It is clear and easy to understand as well as covering all the important information. Thank you.
This has got to be the most comprehensive, and well thought out, "How-To" video I've come across in a LONG time! Thank you so VERY much for sharing, and being so thorough. Edit: I just read through all the resources, links, and more in the description. WOW! Kay, you are AMAZING! Thank you for sharing all your hard work with us.
I have had a bag of leather scraps in my cupboard for over 40 years from when I used to sell leather bookmarks at Tasmania’s famous Salamanca Market. Always thought I would go back to it but now with my cricut maker 3 (which I love) I will be unearthing my stash and getting back into leather crafting thanks to your well produced and easily followed instructions. Well done and thank you and you now have a new subscriber! Clyde Stawell Australia
Hi I am a year to late but, I am starting to play with leather and my cricket and this is the only video of this kind I have found and I can not thank you enough for putting it out to the world I will be doing my first one this week so from the bottom of my heart Thank You
Kay, you are the best instructor ever. I have been following you for years and have learned so much. I don't have a Cricut at this time (I'm a Silhouette user), but I still continue to watch your videos from start to finish because I really enjoy watching the whole process for your projects. Thank you so much.
Been in leather work for a few years. This just rocked my world!!! I cannot wait to try this!!! This just expanded my leather world so much!!! Thank you so much.
What a phenomenal tutorial. I genuinely can’t thank you enough for sharing this valuable and inspirational video. I do hope the world returns the favor multiple fold for your talent and generosity. Off to tool leather now!
Wow you never cease to amaze me. I have been ruminating about this very topic for quite some time but never got past the research stage. What I mean by that is watching Cricut videos but never quite satisfied with the information presented or lack thereof. I have been watching leather maker videos for years and always wondered if tooling could be done more efficiently with a Cricut. You have answered that with a resounding YES YES YES and I am so happy I am subscribed to your channel. If Cricut were smart they would team up with you and Cindy Pope to present more awareness about what Cricut can do with leather tooling. They would discover a whole new market of serious makers that have the money and inclination to invest in good quality tools. Once again thank you for your knowledge and expertise. You are not Clever Someday, you are Clever Every day.
Excellent tutorial! From leather crafting perspective you have many options to attach the patch, glue, make the border a bit larger and use rivets to attach to the hat or you can sew onto the hat after punching stitch holes. Love seeing people find applications of untraditional methods in getting similar results. ❤
Your voice sends off a CALMNESS as you give instructions. I have a Brother Scan N Cut - I bet I can do this as well. I will give it a try. I guess I could also make small holes so a rivet could be used to anchor piece down to your make. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Mine turned out perfect! Hands down the best tutorial. Thank you so much for all the testing and perfecting. And for a brilliant tutorial in less than 30 minutes. Can't thank you enough for opening the doors to a whole new world with my cricut.
I know I say this every time you come out with some new technique , but you are a true genius. I am amazed by your creativity and your willingness to try and try and try again to make these things work. You must have so many scrap pieces of stuff from all of the “test runs”. Thank you for all of your hard work to figure this out for the rest of us!
Hearing you say “pin layer” reminded me fondly of why people in the southern US states say “ink pin” when they are referring to a “pen”, meaning the writing instrument. I once asked a colleague, who had asked me for an “ink pin”, why she specified it that way, and she responded, “well, as opposed to a safety pin, of course!”, like I was the dullest knife in the drawer. 😊. Accents really do tickle my ears. Love yours. And your content, of course!
Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial! I am exploring everything my Cricut Maker can do and sharing my experiences on my weekly crafting podcast. I can't wait to share my experience making the "shine" leather patch! I will be shouting you out on my podcast and social media. Happy Crafting!!
Thank you for taking the time to walk newbies through the Cricut using leather!!! With learning this I will now be doing some awesome patches for my leather work.
Thank you so much! I've owned a Cricut for ages, but still don't really understand how to use it. I bought a tooled purse kit on a whim for a dear friend's birthday, but am very much second guessing my abilities, so I searched for a couple of how-to videos and yours was the first on the list. This is a brilliant technique and your clear, patient explanations have me thinking I can do this. Thank you again!
Just started with my Cricut Maker (and really anything Cricut-related) in Sept 2021. Leather is a huge part of my life and I have an appreciation for real leather, not faux or flimsy leather. So, I searched and searched for ways to make really cool things with real leather using my Cricut Maker, and more importantly tooling and engraving-type of projects. This is by far the best video I just happened upon! I’ve made a few projects so far and am sooooo I love and they are extremely popular.
Thank you so much for this! I had fantastic results with the engraver and a single pass of the foil tool! The Maker sure makes alot of weird sound on the Kraft Board with default pressure. Everyone reading this always remember to wet the leather. I gave my leather a good wetting and it took about 40 mins to return to its colour.
HOLY MOLY. This is the BEST Cricut discovery ever! I recently bought a Maker 3 because I have been making leather bracelets by hand for years now and wanted something to maybe allow me to just layout designs onto the leather and then cut the bracelets for me to speed up production, but I was a bit underwhelmed with the limited options and tutorials that were out there when it came to the etching tool on veg-tan leather…until now! Just tried out your process and I can 100% say it worked for me and also looks just like my hand-tooled designs, and in a fraction of the time it takes to tool them! THANK YOU! This process is a game-changer!
As a Leatherworker and a crafter, I tried tooling leather long ago with my Maker. I tried a few ways that just did not pan out right. This video has given me hope again and plan on getting the engraver and foil tips to try again. Thank you.
This video is probably the best instructional I’ve ever seen on ANY subject. Your precise directions and clear enunciation made this so informative! I don’t know if my poor underutilized Maker 2 will ever see this project, but I’m definitely saving the video. You just gained a subscriber. Thanks!
Kay, as always, your tutorials are precise, thorough and awesome! I can just imagine how many tries you had to do to arrive at this quality. You think of everything and we can be sure that if we follow what you do, we'll arrive at an awesome project too! Great job!!
I have always wanted to know how to do this. I have been crafting for years and knew there had to be a way to use the cricut with leather but I was too scared to explore it on my own. Your video confirmed for me that it is possible and gave me the knowledge I needed to be able to do it. Thank you very much.
Hi. I am a leather worker an I have been looking at the Cricut for a while wondering if it could help me with my business. I was very pleased to see what the Cricut can achieve with veg tan leather because Cricut do not promote this use of their machines. Thanks for doing the research and passing it on. It is most helpful. I shall buy a Cricut Maker now.
I've put off buying a cricket because no one could explain how to tool leather. I want the versatility and speed to improve my custom shoemaking. I have greater confidence in the cricket, and will follow your recommendations in purchasing one. Thank you so very much for this tutorial! I hope it helps leather workers who were sitting on the fence about it!
I am just learning how to make embroidery patches and was searching and came across your video, I am writing all supplies down and will be trying to make this…. Thank you so much and I love how you explain… again thank you!😊
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It's very clear and understandable. I've watched Cindy's tutorials but come away more confused than when I started. Your work is beautiful
The completed and stained patch looks amazing! I appreciate your use of humor as many of your videos are so smart, it can feel like information overload for me. Your soft, smooth tone belies the often highly technical information delivered. As a subscriber, I really enjoy the education. I highly recommend your Facebook group for additional resource information
This is fantastic! I just did three! I did a test cut with the kraft board setting with my deep point blade. It didn't quite cut through so I added another cut layer. Still didn't cut all the way, so did the rest with a craft knife, no biggie. I used my scoring stylus, laid flat on my work surface to burnish the cut edges for a more finished look. I held the stylus down and worked the edges of the patches under the metal tip. Can't wait to get the stain on these. I've been wanting to figure out how to do this for years! Thank you so much!
If you really want those edges to stand out, stain them darker, apply tokenole, and burnish with a tough denim or canvas cloth. You can get them to look like glass.
I have been doing this with my Scan N Cut for about 3 years now. I use the emboss feature. I draw up many of my own designs in Ai and bring them up in Canvas Workspace and transfer to my SNC. I wet the leather as well. I use double sticky sided Cat Scratch tape. I have used it on belts, bag patch logos, dog collars, key chains , ornaments and several other leather craft items. I use about 2-3 oz veg tan leather. Do a test to make sure it clears your machine machine head. You will need to set the scanner level to 2. Hard pressure and slow speed on settings. I also do half cutting on the same leather using the same technique-water and tape. Light pressure settings, slow cutting and I interchange the fine vinyl auto blade (sky blue cap cutter)into the standard (black cap cutter) for a much cleaner cut. Once complete I roll the leather back and forth with my hands to open wide my cuts then take a stain pen and run over the cuts which soak it up to a deep rich color then go stain the whole item with normal staining styles. Or you can just stain the piece at one time for a more specific subdued look. You can also draw or emboss your complete pattern for hand cutting too.
I absolutely love the look you achieved. I really appreciate all the testing and tricks and detailed instructions you come up with for those of us that are not rocket engineers.
Kay, your tutorials are always so clear and so thorough. Thank you so, so much for the time and effort you put into this work! You constantly push these machines to their limits and open up possibilities and doors for us all. Cheers!
You are just wow! So thorough and clear! Thank you for taking the time to experiment to find just the right settings. This was wonderful to watch. Thank you, thank you!
Kay you are, as always pushing boundaries. Thanks so much for your patience and sharing your amazing techniques. This video is amazing. I want to do this right now xo
Kay you are amazing, thanks so much for all of the testing of project materials and your clear and precise presentations. I am a Cricut Ambassador in Australia and always appreciate the new tips you share. I highly recommend you to my ladies here, we truly appreciate you. Xo
This video literally answered every question I had. I have spent hours searching and watching others, this by far is the best. I plan to watch it a couple more times (at least 😉) to make sure I have everything down and ready to go. Thank you so much!
I have watched this several times but find myself with one problem. There isn’t a foil option when using DS on iPad, I don’t have a laptop or computer. Is there a different setting I could use as a workaround?
@@bredlinforizing8206 unfortunately not. This is desktop only. Please send feedback to Cricut asking for foil support on the mobile DS app (Joy app already has it so we know its possible).
This was AMAZING! I swear you could teach “how to build a nuclear reactor” and make it seem like an easy afternoon project! Beautifully done! Subscribed!!
The Engraving tool acts like a Swivel Knife and gives you your cut. The Foil Tool acts like the Beveler and gives you your depth. (You explained it well. I'm just adding this for people who might want to know the terms) I want a Cricut now...
THANK YOU!!! I have been asking on Facebook forums for 2 days how to use the deep-cut blade and NO ONE could tell me. They all just said, "it works in the Maker". But didn't explain that you don't look for a setting, you just ignore it when it says "knife blade".
Please do not misunderstand. You can not ignore it when it says "Knife Blade," only when it says "Fine Point Blade," and you should only do this when you have tested, or when someone you trust has recommended, a particular setting for a particular material.
This video has been sooooo useful. I just wanted to add after a good bit of testing I found that using a gel leather dye gives a more detailed profound look to the tooling. It soaks in slower so you can dab over the tooled areas then wipe away more liken to a patina.
The finished pieces look beautiful! I have been wanting to tool leather using my maker because my carpal tunnel is getting worse. I’m so excited for this! Thanks for another great tutorial Kay!
What a wonderful tutorial - it’s like you knew exactly what questions I was thinking of and answered right there in the video! This is so exciting and adds an entirely new aspect to my burgeoning creativity - thank you!!
What a fantastic video! Love the step by step. One thing is that with all the updates that Cricut does to Design Space so often, I have to figure out how to figure out some of the steps. Hopefully you will.make an update. Once again fantastic video. You are the only one that has a video for leather patches. Very insightful!
:-) so many comment... but also as a leather worker, I use a large sharpie to dye my edges and Tokonole to smooth those edges to a nice smooth finish. While I'm not a patch guy, I like the idea of tooling floral designs. I need to try this to save time. thanks.
This is a GREAT tutorial, THANK YOU! Several years ago I searched for this w/out success. Very clean, precise and easy to follow. I’m now ready to re-visit this project! 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
Wow! I like how clearly you explain everything you're doing. I've subscribed. I'm the Cricuteer of our home and my Hubby is the Leather crafter. This creates a nice crossover where we can create together. I'm excited! Thank you!
Hi Kay, I just watched your video. I have an explore so I paid close attention on the process. Once I watched it, I read through the comments and a third party tool was brought up. I didn't realize it, but I have this tool and learned how to use it for engraving on acrylic. Your tutorials are well made and from your acrylic tutorial I made some amazing night lights for a couple of grandkids! Thanks again, look forward to trying leather tooling sometime in the future, now that I know I can accomplish it with my explore :)
I have saved this video as a great patch making tutorial. I have been tooling leather since 2016. I have seen how I can adapt this video to just transfer a design for me to tool OR tool the whole patch with my maker. I will definitely buy the blades you recommended. I have subscribed to you so I can get more Cricut ideas from you. Thanks for being such a great teacher!!! 😀👏👏👏
I am in awe! Informative, detailed, and FASCINATING! Plus I totally appreciate the time your experimentation as well as development of the video must have taken. Thanks so much for your help and the sharing.
Super excellent tutorial. I do leather crafting and I was wondering if there was a way to achieve these type of results with my Maker.. Thanks for making the process detailed and easy to understand.
OLD LEATHER SMITH here. I always like 2 learn something new, thank you. Suggestions, add a few drops of liquid dish soap 2 your water, it breaks the tension of the water and the leather absorbs it faster and more completely.

Agreed! The best tutorial I have ever seen. So thorough. Thank you!
Thank you for the extreme detail that you provide and the time spent on your videos. Wonderful project, thank you for sharing!!
Such an awesome tutorial! I’ve just completed my first piece while following along! Magical is right! Thank you so much Kay!
THE BEST tutorial I have seen! Thank you so much. Now off to research as to where to buy the leather. 😊
You are such a really great "outside the box" thinker. I love it.
Your videos are incredibly well-made, no-nonsense and informative. Thank you.
What a fantastic video! Love the step by step. One thing is that with all the updates that Cricut does to Design Space so often, I have to figure out how to figure out some of the steps. Hopefully you will.make an update. Once again fantastic video. You are the only one that has a video for leather patches. Very insightful!
Beautiful work. Can't wait to get start using leather with my Cricut Maker.
Thank you so much for all your hard work and trial and error to bring us this video!!! I LOVE THIS!!! 💕 BEAUTIFUL WORK!!
This is a great tutorial. Very easy to follow. I was able to make myself a cute Norwegian leather keychain 🥰
Thank you for this! I am a hobby leather crafter, and I just got a cricut for Christmas. I'm excited to use your tips to create some neat things!
:-) so many comment... but also as a leather worker, I use a large sharpie to dye my edges and Tokonole to smooth those edges to a nice smooth finish. While I'm not a patch guy, I like the idea of tooling floral designs. I need to try this to save time. thanks.
Video is FANTASTIC!! Thank you so much. I'm working on my 4th patch now. Trying to find new designs. You did a great job on this - Thanks again.
Wow! What thorough and concise instructions! I know I'll probably never end up actually using this, but I still watched the whole thing. Lol
Kay, you never cease to amaze me! Thank you for this very informative tutorial. I can't wait to give this a try.
This was such an amazing tutorial! Thank you so much! Having so much fun making patches!
The foiling tool instead of the debosser, that's brilliant, why didn't I think of that! Very clever use of your tools
Wonderful! Enjoy how articulate and clear you are with your instructions.
Thank you from a leather worker, great tutorial! (Wetting the leather is called casing 😊)
BTW if you lightly singe the dauber it will prevent most of the loose fibers from sticking to your project,
I am in awe! Informative, detailed, and FASCINATING! Plus I totally appreciate the time your experimentation as well as development of the video must have taken. Thanks so much for your help and the sharing.
Thank for the clear instructions, I never tried leather before, always wanted, I am going to follow your instructions
That was an incredible tutorial!
Thanks for your time and efforts
They are much appreciated 👍
Super excellent tutorial. I do leather crafting and I was wondering if there was a way to achieve these type of results with my Maker.. Thanks for making the process detailed and easy to understand.
I didn't even KNOW I wanted to try this, but now I can see I'll be hooked. Thank you!
All I can say is WOW! I wish I could completely understand it all as I have a maker but only work off my IPad or phone. The look is AMAZING!!!!!
I have been trying to do exactly this for over a year! Awesome video with very clear and concise instructions! Thank you!
Bravo!!! Super well made video. very informative, to the point, and not ridiculously girly like most cricut videos!
This is simply amazing! Thank you so much for all the advice. Great tutorial!
