Been a leather worker for years, and this is my absolute favourite step in carving. It’s really satisfying watching the piece come to life. Great video
OLD Leather Smith here, very nice even beginners should be able 2 follow. I prefer the petal lifters myself I have used the dear foot before but with the petal lifters you can get a deeper lift and a more pronounced shape throughout. Just things I have done now and in the past. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃
This was perfect for what I was looking for. Great job of pointing out all the little finesse points that so many others skip. Subscribed and can't wait to see more from you!
Amazing, I am just now learning the leather part of upholstery. Advanced Custom Upholstery was my shop before Augusta Maine shut me down. They decided that I have to register as an auto repair shop. I do boat tops and interiors plus vehicles and other recreational seats. I am extremely excited that I found your channel since I have to find a different direction to make money from home due to health issues. Can't wait to do this technique on all my leather projects I have been planning. Thanks for saving my business potentially by sharing this! Keep up the awesome work I'll definitely be watching and learning!
What a small world. I just met you in the store yesterday and didn’t even realize that you were the author of this video until I checked out your channel. I had just watched it the night before and the whole reason I went to Tandy’s was for a lifter. Please keep the content coming!!! The among of detail you provide is perfect for the detail oriented beginner.
That's so crazy. I heard you asking for lifters, but I didn't think anything of it. Thank you for the feedback. I always wonder if I'm giving enough info... too much... more personality... less personality? So hard to know what to do. Love getting the feedback, but positive and negative.
Haven't been doing it for awhile. Just got back in, and realized my lifters were gone as soon as I saw your video. I keep sharp and dull. Dull ones for refining the stamps. Makes a world of difference. I was wondering why my work wasn't as good as it was. I need to go buy new lifters today. Thank you.
you have convinced me that the lifter tool could easily be replaced by the deerfoot without loss of lift. Thank you for this; it is an impressive addition to the leather carving!!
Okay, you are just plain cool my Southern friend! This Canadian gal needed to see this. Amazing work. Good explanations and tips and I'm so glad you said 1) the ridges dig into your fingers (my tiny fingers and wrists get nerve jumps), and 2) that human beings aren't very good at doing random. I always thought that was just my linear brain! Hugs to you. I will check out your channel again. :)
So glad it helped! I hate the ridges on those tools. I eventually sanded them off with sandpaper. And yes, we're terrible at "random" It's so bad that we have problems programming computers to be random. 😂 Thank you for the kind words and can't wait to hear what you think of the other videos.

My word! You could call this “Extreme Leather Carving”! I carved and tooled for about 20 years - belts and such for a living, and more artistic pieces for family and friends. I have created some nice pieces with sharp effects, but this is cut to another level! Very impressive video. Thank you.
Thank you! And sorry for the delayed response. I love sharing this craft with others and we've got some really cool videos coming out in the coming days and weeks. Please let me know what you think and if there is anything else you'd like us to cover.
Do you have a video showing this project from start to finish. I am new to this and want to learn as much as I can. I've never seen this done before. I love it and can't wait to try my hand at it. Thank you for sharing.
@The Leatherverse have you considered sanding the ridges off your deer foot tool then wave a flame across it to smooth the rubber? It worked well for me. I also sanded a curved recess on the top, close to the end of the rubber grip. This provided better purchase for my index finger and better control.
This is beautiful. What would someone do with this? Frame it? I would imagine that you couldn’t do this on something like a belt because it would tear the leather somewhat. I’m just amazed at what can be done with leather so maybe I’m wrong? I’m just starting out and I love the look of carvings. This is my favorite so far.
Wow, thank you! You can do a lesser version of this on a belt. One of the big factors is being the size of the image. It's much harder to do it on a leaf half that size. When is done right, it shouldn't weaken the leather.
Hello first off I’d like to say excellent carving skills. The tool that you made what was it originally? I’d like to make one because well custom Barry King tools are a bit out of reach. I like the expensive tools but will have to sell some items in order to purchase the high end tools. Great work and thanks for any help.
Can't wait to get started on this one. I still need to finish snoopy. Needed s narrower beveler. How thick is this leather piece? To be honest, when I first saw this the other week, I thought it would be a leaf glued down on a separate piece of leather.
Sure. I'll always do my best to put links in the description, but here they are. Barry King Petal Lifter: amzn.to/3acKyuV Barry King Leaf Liner: amzn.to/2YjWWGS Deer foot modeling tool: amzn.to/3iEAhMF
How much does this compromise the strength of the leather if I'm using the tooled piece on a shoe or other use that needs strength for longevity? Thanks!
The lifter is faster than the deer foot, but the deer foot has the option of "pushing" or "rolling" the edge, which gives you more depth. It's perfectly fine to just use one or the other, but I like using both because of the reasons above.
Wonderful. Very Informative. Your Verbal and Visual Instructions are very helpful. Thank You for taking the time to make this video.

Not only replace it, but take it much much further than you could with just a lifter.
I’ve done all the techniques you showed, but needed a refresher and I loved the little veining at the end. Thank you!

Thank you! I'm getting ready to do another one.... one that's got better volume.
@TheLeatherverse what was the newer lifting video with more volume? Thanks.
Thanks so much for sharing!!! Happy I found it. Beautiful work!!!
Awesome. New skill to practice.

It could go on a hand bag or saddle bag
Great job! Essentially your pulling the fibers apart. But that looks awesome….. I have thousand ideas to do this also..

Thank you! I believe you're referring to the black handled tool. It's a deer foot modeling tool. I just rounded the heel off.
thank you
This is beautiful I would love to see some more of this
Thank you! Coming soon. 🙂
What weight is this leather? Great job on your videos, thank u for sharing your awesome skills
It's about 8oz or so. And thank you! 😊
Just awesome ! 👌🏻👍🏻

Yeah, that steep edge beveler makes the more refined tooling possible. Pretty close to a must have. The leather thickness is in the 5-6oz range.
Very nice, thank you for sharing!!
Would you share the part number for the 2 lifting tools.
Thank you.

@@TheLeatherverse Thank you.
I just watched a video of Jim Lindell, and he rounds the heel, which helps prevent the tool from marking up the leather when you lift the petal.
Yes! I was visiting with him after I did this video and he pointed out the same thing. I've since rounded mine off as well.
Beautiful work. I saw your stamped signature on the finished project & was wondering who made your metal signature stamp?
I think it was a company simply named Leather Stamp Makers. 😉
How much does this compromise the strength of the leather if I'm using the tooled piece on a shoe or other use that needs strength for longevity? Thanks!
Bob Beard also makes some wonderful tools, especially for figure carving. This is in no way against Barry King. I have tools from both men.
I've heard that, but have never had the chance to try them... would love to one day.
Thank you very much
You're welcome!
tanks for perfect teach.
My pleasure!
What ounce of leather does best with this technique and what is the thinnest that you'd use?
Typically for this technique, I like an 8-9oz leather. The thinnest is about a 4oz.
Where can I see how you do the veining etc?
Where is the free patterns so we can work with you?
Just got it back up and running!

Please give the name of the tools you are using in this video.
So why use the lifter at all when you go back with the deer foot? It seems like extra work. Is it the shading that the lifter causes?
The lifter is faster than the deer foot, but the deer foot has the option of "pushing" or "rolling" the edge, which gives you more depth.
It's perfectly fine to just use one or the other, but I like using both because of the reasons above.
Can you share where you got the deer foot tool for lifting please. Thanks
There's a link in the video description. 🙂
How manny mm leather, you use in this prosjekt?
If I remember correctly, it was 7-8 oz.
Awsome
Be honest I think it looks great with out rebevoling it
Is there an alternative to this leather on fabric than can be milder as easily
Not that I'm aware of.
Superbe, merci !
Thank you!
Can this be done on a fabric instead of leather
I don't believe so. It wouldn't hold its shape.
Excellent tutorial, the volume of the video was inadequate.
Thanks for the feedback
Dose anyone know how to get the lifting tool I can’t find it
I will share a new link today. Apparently the first one I shared is broken.
