But remember that it takes more than being a great song to be a hit. There were so many Prince songs that should have been hits. Sometimes it is just about timing. Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” came out and tanked. Then they put out “Forever Your Girl” and that was a smash so they rereleased “Straight Up” and it took off. Sometimes it is just about timing.
Sad to me that the 80s and even 90s went by without her being more of a star. When I listen to the Blueberry Gossip album, I feel like she could have done so much MORE. Just listen to a track on there called Betcha She Don't Want You. Towards the end she gets going with the growling and the high notes. Why this wasn't capitalized on more is beyond me. But I guess those of us who support her can be her fans
Because it got no support from the record label. Back then just having a great sounding record was the last thing you needed. Back then DJs and Program Directors got things like cases of CDs to give away and other things just to play a song.
